Its hilarious when you are talking about that piece from sst and saying you are going to have to fix it that the camera keeps panning to the whisky box
Man I sure appreciate ya! I took me a week to get here to see this! That was enough time that I probably already lost the thing in my shop... Dont worry, Ill find it!
I've been a professional mechanic for most of the last 35 years and the most expensive toolbox I've owned (other that the service truck I had for 3 years) was an $800 craftsman box I bought in my 20's. Now tools on the other hand I'm well into the $80,000 range there.
The quality of Harbor Freight tools has greatly improved over the past 10 years. I worked with a guy that bought a US General box in the late 90's, and within a year the corner gussets started to crack on the box. The shop we worked in required us to constantly move our boxes around, which was the cause for the cracks. I've also seen Craftsman boxes have the same issue, while the box truck dealers' boxes didn't suffer that issue. Personally I've owned Snap-On, and Matco boxes, and they are great, and still have my original Craftsman when I started my wrenching career . But in this day and age, I wouldn't be ashamed to own a US General or an ICON box.
I don't know why but it really makes me happy that you and Puddin are becoming friends and you are trying to hook him up with stuff. It might just be because he's a local guy and because of that I feel like I "know" him and I hope he keeps getting bigger on UA-cam. Plus, when I met him, he was one of the coolest, most humble dudes I've ever met.
Not a mechanic, just an ex-farm kid that learned how to fix small stuff. Just saying hello to a fellow grad from SFDCI, but 23 years before you. Glad I found you again.
Hey Ian, great videos as usual. Just wanted to say hi from Brockville (you know the place) Good friend of my son's was one of your students in Smith Falls and he has told us what a great teacher you were. Take care...cheers
Ole Puddin is an Oklahoma icon or should be ! He’s a local Boy that’s a one in a million, what you see is what you get . Just a hard working Oklahoma Boy making good and doing his family right .
When I was younger I fell from 15' into the upper drawer of a Snap-on 6300 series and bounced off of it. When I picked myself of the ground I checked the drawer and it rolled in and out with no problems
Clecos are great. I used them working on aircraft a lot. There are three major reasons I like them vs screws. 1. They are fast to put in and take out. 2. They align your part back to the original position like an alignment pin. 3. They do not tear out the hole like a screw will when you put your part on and off several times. I finally got some for my shop and want to get me more. You can never have too many. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I absolutely don't blame you on that fixture. I've made my own years ago to use on an engine stand. It was made with scrap and built more durable than anything I use at the dealership. I've had to make more for coworkers
It's interesting how the things we were told at a younger age, sticks with us for the rest of our lives. I too have a few examples of wisdom that was told to me by older guys, and boy were they ever right! Love the channel! Big fan here from way back when you and Jessi started the Xtreme 4X4 show! Good Luck!
I say the same thing, my cornwell box is going on 20 years now. Every time it’s full and I think I need a bigger box I spend a day and go through it, take home specialty tools and what not I don’t use anymore. It’s amazing how little you actually need to be a successful mechanic.
As a teacher you're great thank you so much for your enthusiasm I have a son that is 30 years old has been watching you since you're on TV and he is in the trade and he still "you every day thank you
A guy I worked with at a Cummins shop had one of the Jessie James West Coast Choppers boxes, thing was so huge even a 6'4" I had trouble seeing in the top drawers. I wasn't the only one with an off the Sears floor Craftsman boxes though. Best advice one of those senior techs gave me was if you have to borrow a tool twice, you need to buy one before asking to borrow it a third time. Those welds look about as good as the welds on the engine stand, I ordered from Summit, wouldn't have trusted that 2,000lb stand to hold an aluminum four cylinder. Promptly returned the parts that made it to me the next day.
I agree I bought three large double deck tool boxes from Home Depot costing $1125.00 dollars. I have one for electrical and one is for cars and motorcycles and the last box had heavy tools for large equipment and engine rebuilding. I agree the tools inside the boxes have afforded me the money to travel, raise my 2 kids. And have been used to keep my vehicles running.
I am not a professional mechanic, but even if I was, I cannot imagine any scenario where I would need a higher quality box than my US General - exceptional quality!
I love my yukon bench buddy! I actually mounted mine to an old brake rotor and that allows me to clamp it to my bench. Good to see support for HF! They've come along way in the last 20 years! Great explanation for tool boxes! I've never understood the allure of fancy boxes. My parents bought me a small craftsman roll around and I acquired an old smashed up snap-on roll around. Both are great!
Years ago I got a smoking deal on a matco top and bottom box FULL of old used matco and snap on tools for $5k from a retired neighbor who was moving and didnt feel like dragging it around anymore. My brother who has a similar setup got snagged by the snap-on guy to the tune of $35k for a fancy neon green box with all the bells/whistles. All new and shiny and they will pay for themselves eventually but I'll never cut loose of my old red box.
Enjoyable show, thanks for sharing. you have a good point about the tool boxes. ive looked at the HF boxes and they aren't bad boxes I have a Snap on box I bought back in the 80's. But wanting one of those HF boxes for extra space.
I agree about tool boxes...as long as they aren't so cheat that 3 months later the drawer will fail...a cheaper box is fine..plus..if ur worried about denting the top of the box..get urself some thick steal a d set it on top the box...
Unfortunately that’s what the tool truck guys look for is young apprentices to sell them things they really don’t need ( I was one of them ) about 20 years ago unfortunately. Don’t get me wrong my snap on box ( which is rusting and out of warranty)and full of snap on tools is still holding up perfectly and is very strong but I transitioned from automotive to underground mining and there’s no way I’d bring that box underground. So I now have a job box and work out of tool bags with Canadian tire tools and make 3 times what I did in automotive. While my fancy tool box is sitting in a shed doing nothing . So if there’s any young apprentices reading this , don’t do like I did and waste your money. Get a cheap box ! Another great video sir 👍🏻

Ian, have you ever rebuilt a FWD transmission/transaxle and is it more challenging than a typical RWD trans? BTW that floor/tunnel turned out great in the Gomanche!
Love the toolbox idea, I have done similar, got my original box which cost me a fortune but then as time went on I realised it was unnecessary and extra boxes since have been cheaper. Side note though, how confident are you in the toolbox holding the weight of the tranny with that much leverage from it hanging off the side? I’d be super paranoid about it ripping the sheetmetal top…
Ian what would you run on a TJ? Trying to upgrade the Dana 35 rear. Axles out my way are so tough to find. I don’t have budget for tons or skills to do them. Are JK axles a decent upgrade? Second what happened to the suburban gorilla?
Hey Ian, I am working on building my first Jeep. 2007 Jku with Dana 60 front and sterling in the rear. I would like to build my own driveshafts to stay budget friendly, have you had any experience doing this?
Is there a way to scan your cardboard cutout into the Bend-Tech software (having know dimensions) so you don't have to create it yourself? Then perhaps use a pen instead of laser to draw the shape onto paper that's taped to the metal to verify that the scanned dimensions were correct?
Hey is there any advice for or tools you would recommend for rebuilding transmissions im wanting to rebuild my dads truck transmission it’s a 95 chevy k1500 with a 4l60 I’m trying to get this truck back on the road I lost my dad a few years ago trying to get it back
I've got 2 of the HF boxes that I built into a workbench. Been using it for 7 years and it's holding up great. video tour of the boxes ua-cam.com/video/mhKLgK0vFF8/v-deo.html. I was noticing that when we see your shop on TV it is almost pristine but here on UA-cam it looks just like mine mid project, every flat surface covered in tools, supplies and parts. 👍👍
I’ve watched you on TV since you started with Jessie. I enjoy watching you build, but you have got to work on your camera work. I know you’re doing this on your own but there are so many times that whatever you’re talking about is off camera and we’re looking at the shop wall. Keep up the content.
without that ToolBox You wouldn't be able to find that Wrench , You would spend a lot of time looking for tools in cardboard boxes, even with cheap toolboxes you get what you pay for and if you are pulling on those drawers every day it makes a Big Difference, Truly You know what I mean 😉
I do know what you mean..but really a 600 box does the same job as a 6K tool truck box....where as a $1 dollar wrench does not do the same job as $10 wrench
@Big Tire Garage Yep ,you're right it's just you notice it more or faster with the Wrench ,I guess it would be more like if you were to put a lot of weight in one Drawer and used it every other day
Its hilarious when you are talking about that piece from sst and saying you are going to have to fix it that the camera keeps panning to the whisky box

I’ve watched you on TV since you started with Jessie. I enjoy watching you build, but you have got to work on your camera work. I know you’re doing this on your own but there are so many times that whatever you’re talking about is off camera and we’re looking at the shop wall. Keep up the content.
Noted!
Ahhh the good ol days. When a mechanic could retire in his 50s.
Beg tyre gerage, with eh kofffe.
Hopefully, yes, he gets the sarcasm.
without that ToolBox You wouldn't be able to find that Wrench , You would spend a lot of time looking for tools in cardboard boxes, even with cheap toolboxes you get what you pay for and if you are pulling on those drawers every day it makes a Big Difference, Truly You know what I mean 😉
I do know what you mean..but really a 600 box does the same job as a 6K tool truck box....where as a $1 dollar wrench does not do the same job as $10 wrench
@Big Tire Garage Yep ,you're right it's just you notice it more or faster with the Wrench ,I guess it would be more like if you were to put a lot of weight in one Drawer and used it every other day
I had to protect my tools that made me hundreds of thousands of dollars.
That episode ended entirely too quickly. Thanks, sir.
