EWAF are still touring, I saw them this past summer at Casino Rama, a couple of hours north of Toronto. Philip Bailey still has a great falsetto and the whole band is so fantastic. I walked out of there feeling like I was on a cloud; their music just makes you feel happy.
He was only 37 when this song was made. Born in 1941, recorded in 1978. he passes away in 2016 age 74. I saw them just a few months after he passed away. The band member in yellow (forgot his name) is now the lead singer. One of the most fun concerts I've been to.
Maurice White died in his sleep of Parkinson's Disease, he's sorely missed. Phillip Bailey was the high-register singer who's the lead singer now. Both great voices and people.
The thing I really like about EW&F is that they actually played their instruments instead of relying on computer generated sounds, and I'm a sucker for a good horn section. They just made music that made people feel better than they did before they heard their songs.

This is from a 55 year old white guy who was raised on southern rock and and metal. This music broadened my horizons when I was young and is very nostalgic for me.

There are a LOT of R&B artists out there playing actual instruments and singing with wonderful voices not being heard because a few Big Business entities have complete control over the markets and dictate what we hear on the radio. When we do hear those artists they get marginalized with some "retro" reference and moniker when in fact the music is actually updated with today's beats and a fresh build on R&B/Soul/Funk. To your point people DON'T do this to rock, metal or country artists. R&B must build on its past like every other genre.

You should watch the UA-cam channel of the Dutch music show TopPop. There are a lot of old music videos from the seventies and eighties. A lot of artists from all over the world performed in that show (lipsync most of the times).
