I started my herb garden when I bought my very old home in 2010. Since I wanted to get a head start on growing, I bought tray after tray of potted herbs from my local garden center along with seeds to stagger the growing coverage. The nursery owner actually warned me of the invasive nature of some of them, like mint and oregano, and I just said "Good! I want them everywhere because deer won't eat them" I'm so happy that I did because I have herbs everywhere and I give clippings and babies to anyone who wants them. My favorites are chive and lemon thyme because they last about 9 months of the year.

ALSO they smell good when walking on them! My sister used mint & one that smells like lemon Pledge as a border of her path from the driveway to the house & koi pond! It's filled in nicely!

I use a 5 gallon fish tank I purchased at my local pet store (on sale too! Yay!) To start my seedlings in. It has a glass top which allows the LED light (or a hanging grow light) to shine upon the soil and seedlings once they sprout. It helps keep the temperature and humidity perfectly. I live in Canada , Northern Ontario and growing herbs indoors is a MUST during the winter as the months are long and cold and I live in a rural area. I find the fish tank great to start seedlings in and I have a 50 & 80 Gallon that I use as my indoor herbs gardens for the winter. Just thought I'd add this in case anyone has an old fish tank laying around that you could use instead of purchasing a mini-herb garden set up for $250 and up! People sell them for cheap online or on marketplace for fb ect, they are used ,and that's how I got my 50gallon and 80gallon. Paid $30 for the 50g and $50 for the 80g.

I’ve used eggshells many times to start my seeds. It’s free and the plants love it! You can also get trays at the dollar store or, if using eggshells, just cut off the top of the container and use that to hold them.

Alwyn! You are one of my favorite people. Thank you for sharing yourself with us. I am excited to share this with you, as you have shared your knowledge with us:
If you take a cutting from your Mother's Rosemary plant, pull off the bottom bits and put it in water, it will sprout roots. Almost every time I do this, it works fabulously! I even buy grocery store cut herbs, the ones in the small plastic cartons, and select the best ones. Then I pull off the bottom leaves, recut the bases, and put them in vases until they sprout roots. Then I plant them outside! I have Rosemary, Thyme, Oregano & Sage in my Garden that are 4 years old now!

I have an oregano plant that is basically a hedge at this point, so watch out for that one too. Maybe give it its own pot.
Also: watch out with sage. It's does cleanse a space but is traditionally used to call in ancestral spirits as well. Cedar is better for purely cleaning a space. Love this video! Those wood labels are so cute!

Oohh, the magick of Spring! I make UA-cam videos in a similar spirit as yours (although I'm a bit newer) this got me so excited to film my next Spring video where I'll be planning out my garden and documenting all the world coming back to life (although I live in a very different zone than you so we're still a few weeks behind in Spring's arrival). One thing I've found to be really powerful in recent years has been that in addition to reading about the magical properties others have assigned to herbs and plants -- I sit and meditate/attune to their energy for myself to get my own personal insight. Thank you so much for sharing your magic! 💚

Of the herbs I've grown, rosemary does best. It started as a small plant and flourished into a bush. If I remember correctly, I got it at a supermarket. Had it for a few years and still strong. Seems very resilient. It's drought tolerant and I don't have to water it much. Though I'm in a warm climate and don't get frosts much, it survived a frost. It smells amazing!
Thank you also for the idea of compostable starter pots. I have small paper cups I haven't used in years, though I kept them because I don't want to waste. This is a great idea of what I can do with them, start plants, plant them into the ground in the cups, and let the cups biodegrade.

I just wanted to say, every week I think I believe more in magic and fairies. Two weeks ago I planted my herbs from cuttings and they were pretty tiny. I just hoped they'd survive. I put little fairy houses around them and some pots of cut glass just because I thought it looked cool. Today I went out and my herbs had gone crazy, tripled in size. I had to split them up and put them in bigger pots. What? So, I thanked the fairies and added some moss to their little houses. I've never had plants do this well. And I think you and the people here who watch your videos might be the only people I know who would understand this. Thank you for opening my eyes to this world.

Beautiful herb garden Alwyn! I so enjoy your inspiring lifestyle. Hyssop and Rosemary are excellent for your respiratory system. Hyssop tea is helpful when you have bronchitis or upper respiratory issues. Basil tea helps calm a cough. Coriander is not only a great herb to cook with but is also a natural diuretic which is great for our monthly menses when we are bloated and have too much water weight.

Hi Alwyn - beautiful content! I want to share a magical technique I learned from the young woman who writes the blog Voice of Nature: before placing seeds in the soil, put the seeds in your mouth and then put the intention into them that these seeds will grow healthy AND develop the qualities that your body will need from them, or that you plan to use them for. Great way to establish a link between yourself and the plants!

Peat free! Peat is found in bogs and alot of the bogs and environments its in has been destroyed for garden compost. But also peat contains little to no nutrients for plants to grow. 💚💚💚

First,I love your videos, and the way in which you present your information. In case you don’t already know this, mugwort (artemisia vulgaris) is very invasive and therefore I recommend you plant it in a pot and keep an eye for volunteers in your garden as it spreads vigorously

I lived along a river beach....and planted a little zen beach garden...up on the bank above high tide line ..where there grew a huge 7' tall wild old fennel plant....next to the old fennel about 3 feet away, but not totally in its shadow, just a little.......I planted a little 6" tall rosemary plant....and watered it through the hot summer for 2 years....the soil was sandy and gravely with a little potting soil added (very little)...I moved from there 11 years ago and now when going back to look.... the rosemary is still there more than waist high...proudly growing.... next to the old 7 ft. fennel plant....and it is next to a path called the river walk where passerbyers can pick it fresh on their walk. That's the only rosemary I've had such good luck with.....real good drainage , dont overwater, and sunshine...

We live in the woods so do not get enough Sun in the courtyard ..we have a very thin garden up the other end of the driveway with Herbs . We moved in 17 years ago and there were small plants and what We though were decorative Bananas ...the Rosemary Bush went berserk and is so large we have to rope it back towards the fence and last Year We had our first bunch of Bananas... this year there is 2 bunches ..one with over 100 tiny tasty Bananas. The Italian Parsley self seeds every year as do the Freesias and Granny's Bonnet flowers .Also have Lemon balm (which is divine in a calming Bath or Tea) MInt, Sage, and Violets .Amazed at how much grows in a tiny garden less than 2 feet wide and the difference they make to Our Meals . We also put in a Bee /Herb Garden across in the small park next to the Kindergarten 7 years ago ...one small Rosemary grew taller than I am, as did a tiny Rose (They are so Tiny but have a heavenly scent , will let most for hips as Rosehips are full of Vit C) that we found growing in a crack in the path...they loved growing together , as did the Lavender bush, Thyme, Italian Parsley, Mint ... unfortunately the Kindy had their fence and retaining wall replaced ...I managed to get the council to move the stone blocks and some of the plants but as they removed them with a digger all of them died! I am so sad .as part from the Bees not having flowers to feed off in Autumn , I would use them for cooking ,also make all my Smudge stick with them , and others in Our tiny street would pick them for their dinner too .Wished I had been told earlier as I would have transplanted them all. I am now planning on having the Bee Garden on the other side as I do not want to grow them next to the treated wood. The Kindy has offered to buy some Herbs for the Garden which is lovely . You video is in perfect timing and has sparked my Energy again so thanks ever so much and brought me out of my Grief for the loss ... Grizabella Moonbeam in New Zealand x

I has such hard time growing lavender that I just bought a lavender plant this year. The rosemary, basil, and lavender I bottom water because it's just so much easier. I either over or under water. With the bottom watering, they take what they need and it's fun watching them suck up water like a straw. Lol
I also got a Venus flytrap but I don't recommend watching videos on them bc people are cruel and feed them live bugs. I catch flys in the water bowl for my cats and feed them those, but just makes sure they're dry first on a paper towel. My flytrap got too cold in my window and when I fed them the wet flys they died. I need bigger pots for my veggies. I love planting things, and watching them grow. Great video Alwyn 🥰🥰

    • @MisstressMourtisha
      @MisstressMourtisha 2 роки тому

I also put my flytrap in an area where theres knats and flys in the garden or house and they catch them. The plant itself has an interesting sweet smell.
I usually get my seeds from dallor tree. You get 4 packets for a $1. I got gladiolus bulbs this year they're coming up nicely. They almost always grow when I get the cheap heirloom seeds from dallor tree. They're left over from last year that they couldn't sell in other stores.
I hope to grow mugwort and moonwort someday. And get a table top glass greenhouse. About 2 ft by 2 ft is the biggest.

Lavender and rosemary prefer to be in the ground they love sun and not too much watering and mugwort is really easy to grow-mine returns every spring and grows about 4 feet tall in a big black cauldron pot on my back patio. I haven’t tried hyssop, but I bought sorrel last year and it grows like crazy (that one can affect the kidneys so only use occasionally) I think I have all the others same as you Alwyn. Such fun! 🌱☺️🌱
