- Former Sugababe Mutya Buena recently won the legal right to use the Sugababes' name on specific merchandise and stationery.
We caught up with the band to discuss how this will affect them!

Like many have said there is a complete dissonance in the sound/image/style of the Sugababes from the original lineup to the third and last iterations…. Unfortunately saving grace Keisha could not make 3.0 feel like the “Sugababes” (like she so rightfully put; “it is a new band”, watching old interviews I feel for her)…
That said Mutya had me in stitches when she tweeted having the name back, only to realise it was for gift wrap only…. Such a legend.

100% agree. I didnt really know much of the Sugababes when Siobhan was in the group. My faves were Heidi Keisha and Mutya. It was bad enough when Mutya left, but they should have just given it up when Keisha left.

9 years, Heidi, not 12. You were not part of Mutya, Keisha or Siobhan's crazy teen slog to a record. And yeah, you were a Sugababe way longer than Siobhan, maybe even Mutya, but the point of Sugababes was the edge and the harmonizing that the other girls brought. I kinda feel betrayed that Heidi's now waltzing around without any original members. My *DAD* works on Eurovision, and even *I* know an ex-contestant is the opposite of MKS' cool-factor, no matter how technically good the voice. (hides)
Ttoby89 jade ewen can sing but the sugababes were not the usual girl group in the beginning, they had soul. Mutya might not have a big voice but she can sing with attitude like on freak like me or soul and meaning on stronger. Even siobhan sang overload with soul.

The Sugafakes. This didn't age well, & this line-up, image, sound, trying to turn them into something they're not, was never going to work. I don't hate any of them, but artistically speaking, I never liked Amelle or Jade. Heidi was different because brought something different that worked. I loved her style, the contrast with the other girls, & her unique & very stylized vocals. I used to love the Heidi breakdowns, like in Round Round & Stronger.
Anyway, this was silly & awkward. I feel bad for Jade. She even got sick of the lies & exposed them & broken up because she didn't want to pretend they were on hiatus or working on new music lol. It's fine full circle now & the fans get what they wanted, so do the real Sugababes. These girls shouldn't have been using the name & singing their songs, while the real group couldn't lol. That's madness. Not many groups try to replace all original members & act as if nothing's changed. 😆🙄🤦🏼♂️

"Overload" was a hit both in the UK and Germany getting respectively a Silver and Gold certification and the album "One Touch" got a Gold certification in the UK. The 1st album was way much more successful than "Catfights & Spotlights" too. The songs of the 4th line-up didn't sell, nor did the album.

Heidi made the Sugababes successful. The band took off when Heidi joined because if her warm bubbly personality and sweet, angelic candyfloss voice. Siohbon amazing singer but lacked personality and charisma.
Overload is what brought them into the public eye
Considering Siobhan literally helped come up with the name Sugababes and without her departure, Heidi would never have been in the group in the first place - so I don't think that augment holds much water tbh

Funny thing: I was watching the Big Reunion, the show where bands from the 90's reformed!! I saw the episode that talked about Atomic Kitten: they didn't mention Heidi at All and Jenny Frost was vaguely mentioned even though the group had had several hits.
As for the new Sugababes line up: I think we should give em a try. I mean: it also true that with Heidi in the band, the group has had great hit songs, number one's etc.

I will never understand the need people have to pit them against each other. Grow up already. 2 original members willingly walked out the door and were replaced by other talented girls. They are all integral parts of the history and legacy of the Sugababes and they can all be enjoyed regardless of particular favourites. I am sure they are at peace with the past and so should everyone else be.

Again though, Heidi was in the group for a long time. Heidi should have known their time was up when it became apparent it wasn't Amelle going, but Keisha. It's unfortunate because now there's constant bickering about what lineup is really true of name Sugababes.

Somebody passed away in Mutya's family, that's the reason why Mutya left. Just thought everyone should know the facts before judging.
Siobhan left because she wasn't getting on with the girls (mostly Kesiha), Mutya had become a mother & wanted to spend more time with her daughter & Keisha was kicked out (obviously a big mistake).
I think the record company was thinking too much about appealing to the audience and that's why they replaced memebers.
BIG mistake, cos the original sugababes sound is SO unique they lost fans who wanted to hear mutya, keisha and siobhan.

Line up 2 and 3 are the best line up’s. All the hate on Heidi and Amelle is not needed. Especially when Mutya and the red head from album one chose to leave. The band continued, and they made some amazing hits. If they’d of ended after mutya left we wouldn’t of had there biggest selling song.
Sorry you are wrong. The heidi era was important and she was integral to their success too but those 3 girls together share a unique bond vocally. They harmonise better than any girl group there has been. After mutya left things started to take a turn for the worse musically but when keisha went. That was sugababes over.
Now the original 3 are back together, you see thats how it was meant to be. They are slick even twenty years later

You're all judging these girls, but the originals left because of Keisha another because she wanted to! You would criticize them if they would put the band down and the band lose the success but not!! The band gained more success after the replacements joined!! Jade wasn't in the longer period but she improwed Sweet 7!! They were all just doing their job!!
They were literal kids when Siobhan left the group, not to mention that back before Mutya left group she asked for the group to have a little break after the release of the two remaining singles from TIMW, which were Follow Me Home and Gotta Be You at the time, and was told a straight no from the record company so she left. The only replacement that contributed to the group's success is Heidi, Jade didn't get much time to do so, but I have to give props to her because I love About a Girl, Sweet and Amazing, Wait for You, and No More You. Amelle only contributed to the group's success with About You Now and the Change album, and that was due to the fans still supporting the group because Keisha and Heidi were still part of it, because basically the only good nonsingle track was Never Gonna Dance Again, which was a leftover from TIMW with Mutya. The fans weren't happy with the 4th lineup so they demanded to get the originals back together and managed to do so. Heidi is very much happy with her family life and so is Jade with her boyfriend and acting roles. Amelle is still trying it out with her music, but since you guys are all about talk but nothing about support it's sadly flopping. So yeah, get over it.
@@iampause Do you know what, everyone has an own favourite line up. But yeah Heidi brought the most success... But Amelle as Mutya's replacement aslo brought some success. People should at least appreciate this.. That she helped the band somehow grow up. Because without them they wouldn't be in the level as they are now. Maybe with Amelle there were not so much no 1 hits as with Mutya but definitely they still hit top ten

I think it means something. In the first line up they hit top 10 only with Overload. Since the reunion Flatline - no. 50 in UK??Sacred Three that got leaked, unfortunately... Now they're re-releasing their first album after all the years??! Flowers after 6 years meaning something new from them and that's obviously a cover and we can expect new material after several years now?? I don't think they'll be as successful as before in 2nd and 3rd line up but it doesn't mean I don't respect them. I don't prefer the line up but wish them all the best!! And I'm sure Sweet 7 would have been their most successful album without the past drama. Keisha wrote it also on her twitter page in 2009. That was something best they've ever done. And all of the songs are great that all should be potential singles... But for one album it's impossible.😁 But lot of them definitely should! Jade joined for the last minute and replaced the last remaining original member. But She's done nothing wrong, neither Amelle and Heidi. They were just doing their jobs...But everyone has an own opinion. People should be more respectful. But yeah for some people there's no help!!😉

IMO the only person who should have said anything in this interview was Heidi, simply because she is "kind of" an "original" member in the sense that she was there from the beginning when Sugababes actually made it big. Amelle should've shut the f*ck up. Oh and look at these 3 now...... No career whatsoever lol. MKS are gonna come back HUGE!!!! It's taking a while but the wait will be worth it.
Sugababes were OVER the day Mutya left. Sure, they've had a few "okay" singles with Amelle but none that had the impact of classic tracks like "Round Round", "Hole In The Head", and "Freak Like Me".

Walk This Way peaked at #1 because it was a collaboration between Girls Aloud and the 'babes, I'm sure no one has ever heard of it on a public place. Top 10 aren't considered hits at that, Atomic Kitten for example had 3 Top 10 hits at the time of their debut and they were about to be dropped by the record label, another example is the Honeyz. So yeah, no one thinks about Amelle when they think about the Sugababes.

The reason they shouldn’t have ever had the name is because they aren’t the sugababes. Heidi gets my respect though, she was a main builder of the success. The other two can mind their own.

So. In 2001 Siobhan left and Heidi joined the girls. They were enthusiastic about her and even said they weren't Sugababes until Heidi came in. They had a great success until Mutya LEFT in 2006. Amelle substituted Mutya and Keisha was pretty much fine with it, she even complimented on Amelle's raspy tone. They had both a couple of hits and flops and Keisha left. After all these exchanges, replacements and split-ups Mutya and Keisha had the nerve to complain about not being able to get the name back. Why leaving in the first place then? Why replacing members? Especially if they were so keen on the name and the original band. I love Mutya and Keisha, it's not Sugababes without 'em but they have their own faults too.

@Anne Day When I said that Mutya and Keisha had their own faults I was referring to the fact that Keisha and Siobhan allegedly didn't get on and Siobhan was one of the "two" original founders (Keisha was introduced in the group by Mutya later). Keisha and Mutya had no qualms about replacing her. Siobhan made a plenty of interviews about the subject in the 00's. Mutya, at the other hand, voluntarily left the group and then complained about Amelle for being too similar to her, look wise. These were their mistakes somehow. Mutya shouldn't have left in the first place and Keisha should have worked on her tumultuous "friendship" with Siobhan. There was some jealousy among the girls. Heidi has her own fault as well, she backed up the wrong line-up which continued to sing their old hits under the name Sugababes after the management had presumably kicked Keisha out of the group, the only original left. The further replacement made the band become a joke, they replaced members even more than Destiny's Child. If anything they should have changed the name, stopped singing the group's iconic hits, at least those that belonged to the 2nd and 1st line-up and concentrated more on new material. The Sugababes are the 2nd and 1st line-up to me, nobody else.

Well, Siobhan left because she couldn't more tollerate Keisha and she had some own problems! Same as with Amelle & Heidi! They were treated horribly by Keisha! The whole team as they mentioned in the interview! She wasn't kicked out by Amelle and Heidi but by their managers and record label! They made a decision that is better to lose one member and replace with another one than to lose two members and then find another two! Keisha gave an ultimatum to their record label! " It's me or Amelle!" And then they decided to push her out! After Heidi joined, the band became more successful and when joined Amelle it was more successful than ever! They released the next album Change which was platinum certified after Taller In More Ways! Amelle was the best choice! She was impressed be the band's manager when he saw her performace with her sister while Mutya was still in the band! And then after Mutya left because she wanted because of her daughter and solo material, manager called Amelle to replace her! She was the first and only person he chose! Jade improved Sweet 7 a lot! Maybe they were all replacement but definitely made great musics! All 6 members brought something into the band! All I can say they should all 6 work together and they would make awesome music together but it will never happen 'cause there are two different lineups! Atleast Amelle Heidi and Jade should reunite and create an own band! And they would be not criticized they are replacement but originals in their own band!

With Mutya they released the three most successful and best selling albums by far, from which they released respectively a bunch of great iconic hits. They had their biggest and most remarkable hits with Mutya. Mutya shouldn't have never left, her departure caused the beginning of the end of the Sugababes.

I am sorry but I think Siobhan’s voice sucks in overload she sounds like she’s nervous and her voice is shaky. I was introduced to Sugababes in the Change era so with good reason that’s the lineup I see the Sugababes as. I do however think whoever the replacement girls were do have similar voices to one another to sound coherent with previous lineups and so the songs don’t sound totally different than the original ones. I Stan Keisha though I love her voice and wish she’d pursue a solo career.. it’s never too late! I don’t see MKS going anywhere further than just the re-release of One Touch and a few new songs here and there. As I think it’s sad to admit it. The Sugababes are history.

I kinda agree with you on this. I first got introduced and hooked into Sugababes with Mutya, Keisha, and Heidi. Any of these 3 getting replaced felt like choosing which leg you need to chop off or which is better replaced, the left or the right? You just can't cuz they both matter. In fact, I was late since I never heard of Siobhan when I first saw Sugababes. I like Siobhan and she's definitely talented but it just didn't feel the same as the first time I got crazy about them from Round Round and Push The Button. Still I'm hoping for MKS to go big.
