  • This is absolutely the greatest guitar story ever. No click bait.
Grammy award winning guitarist Peter Frampton's heavily customized 1954 Les Paul Custom is one of the most recognized guitars in rock history, having been featured on his massive-selling Frampton Comes Alive! album as well as many other historic albums in which Peter was a session player. Presumed lost when a cargo plane crashed in Venezuela in 1980, the guitar was returned to Peter in 2012. This guitar has one impressive story to tell. I go over a brief overview of how Peter Frampton got his start in music and how he thought he had lost his guitar to only have a resurface 31 years later. I hope you enjoy it.
Here is exclusive footage from Peter’s UA-cam channel that includes more footage and an interview with Marc Mariana the original owner of the Phenix guitar.

    What a story!
I didn't know about this guitar until now, only having had a passing interest in Frampton's work on 'Comes Alive' and with Humble Pie. Seen a few interviews with him, and he comes across as a great guy. I'll explore his music now.

Thanks for putting this together. Peter’s Les Paul is indeed the greatest story in the history of the guitar. I loved his LP so much, I finally purchased one of the Gibson VOS Frampton LP re-issues, which I absolutely love playing. It’s as close as I’ll ever come to playing his guitar, and it always puts a smile on my face.

You bet! It’s such an unbelievable story, and that’s awesome that you were able to get one of the Gibson models. 🤘🏽🎸

I got to see him play this guitar before it was lost in the plane crash this was my very first concert in 1979 in Houston Texas at a place called the Sam Houston Coliseum I was 13 years old. What a remarkable story of a guitar’s life and journey and back to its original owner where it belongs. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼

You should like this story, AQ: It's true! On Christmas morning, 1965, when I was nine years old, I was at the house of my earliest childhood friend; and on this morning, his father gave him a guitar. 15 years later, he found himself working for Peter Frampton, who sent him back to Caracas, Venezuela in search of the very same guitar which is the subject of this video. I just talked to him over the phone last night. His name is John, and he's literally on page 2 of Mr. Frampton's memoirs. Among other things, I said to John-'it's like the rock n roll version of the search of The Holy Grail'!

That’s awesome. Thank you for sharing that story. It’s truly in my opinion, the greatest rock ‘n’ roll guitar story ever. 🎸🎸

@@AQMusic10 There's more to this story; it is awesome. Why I've been made privy to it is still a mystery to me. There's nothing special about me. I'll share some more of this story with me, if you don't mind to much.

Jon 'JD' Dworkow, whose on page 2 of Mr. Frampton's memoirs, worked for my brother and his band before he went to work for Peter; and Jon is the one who originally was sent in search of the 'Phenix'. Back in 1978, my brother and his band signed a deal with A&M Records. They were on tour with Aerosmith when Jon and another 'roadie' (Joey Wirsing) recovered a lost, stolen, Les Paul (this one was from the 60s, not 1954) for my brother (this was in New Haven, Ct.). My brother, back in '70-'71, was a guitarist in The Buddy Miles Band. They played all the same places Humble Pie played back in the day; including the Winterland Theatre, San Francisco, where much of 'Frampton Comes Alive' was recorded. They opened there for, among others, The Grateful Dead. 'JD' showed up at his deathbed the day before he died. And there's more to this story, and it's all true!

An incredible story about Peter Frampton's guitar! Your videos are so well produced, also. In the late 70s or early to mid 80s we were staying at a hotel in Miami which had a musical group in the lounge which we were listening to. I forgot the name of the group, but the speaker mentioned on his mic that Peter Frampton was sitting in the audience and he introduced him. Frampton stood up and waved to the crowd. The speaker invited Frampton to play something , but he declined because "he didn't have his guitar". I wonder if he was referring to the one you told about. Great videos, AQ!

Thank you! This is the best guitar story that I have ever heard. The odds that he would be able to get it back 31 years later are unbelievable. That’s a really great story about the hotel in Miami. I wonder how many times we are around famous people and don’t even realize it. Thanks for watching and commenting. 👍🏼🎸
