I love the fact that Kirk doesn't keep it in a display case or locked away somewhere - he tours with Greeny and plays it every night, as it should be.

You know, I inherited my grandpa's favorite coffee cup. One of my uncles said I should put it up and never use it. I said "You know what grandpa would say to you if he was still here? He'd say he didn't buy a coffee cup to look at it, because he bought it to use it"
That's how grandpa thought about "collectibles" and that's how I think of it too. If I ever get my business going, I'll end up collect vintage guitars, but I'll buy them to play them. Recording by myself, and when I gig.

It was rather sarcasm, tone from tornado of souls solo is iconic, tone of linkin park is iconic, it’s quality, complex, pleasant and hard to achieve. Tone of Peter Green is noisy low fi, playing is average at best. Ps: Kirk could use middle position for some solo.

No one, least of all you, or maybe not, will believe this, but I was there at the warehouse when Peter Greene played his last gig with Fleetwood Mac. We were good fans of Fleetwood Mac, but huge fans of the Grateful Dead.
And yes, that is the night that the dead was busted, and hence the song. If I remember correctly, we paid $4.50 to get into the show. And of course, it was packed because of the Grateful Dead. But I was really impressed with Fleetwood Mac even though I was already familiar with their stuff.
What was great about them as a guitar player was that one played a telecaster and one played a Stratocaster and Peter Green who I was familiar with played a Les Paul. Now Being from Jackson Mississippi. I had not seen any Les Paul’s up to that point. And that night Fleetwood Mac were playing through these enormous fender, super showman amps. I was probably 50 feet away from the stage and just marveled at the sound coming from those three guitars. They worked together so well!
We finally left the concert at probably six in the morning… And had heard that they were going to do a jam session at Audubon Park the next day. That was when we heard that the Grateful Dead had been busted, and the only people that showed up were the two drummers from the Grateful Dead and Mick Fleetwood .
Peter Greene was amazing! And some of the best guitar work I’ve ever heard him do was playing through a twin reverb, which I have never been able to make sound great at all!
Some of the solo work he’s done is just amazing and I think he’s the best English blues guitar player ever. That’s just my humble opinion.
Wonderful film, and really well done again! And FYI, it was the January 31 show.

Hi Keith, love your videos! You didn't mention that Greeny suffered catastrophic damage when someone crashed into the back of Gary Moore’s car. When my 335 suffered a headstock break, I was recommended to have her repaired by Phil Joiner, the guy who put Greeny back together. He told me the story of just how bad a state Greeny was in and how much work was involved in reconstruction so the repairs were as invisible as possible. Sadly, like Gary, Phil isn't with us any more having passed away in a car accident many years ago but it was an honour to have had my guitar lovingly repaired by someone with such talent and ability.

One thing I recently noticed while watching a live version of Fleetwood Mac playing “oh well“ in 1969 was that when they did a close-up of Peter’s guitar, the pickups were adjusted in a very odd and unique way. The bass side of both pickups were actually slightly sunken into the cavity while the treble side was sticking up at a normal level. This is true of both the neck and the bridge pickup. That had to have a direct effect on tone and I don’t hear anyone talk about it and I certainly don’t see anyone playing like that. I have a Vintage V100 MPG model “Greeny” that I plan to give that a try on today just to see how it will affect tone.

Well done Keith! Sorry to have missed the chat on this one. I can attest to the esoteric perfection of the "right" Les Paul. Mine is my 1978 Les Paul Deluxe. Handed over to my loving and waiting hands from my father in 2006, it was a personally coveted instrument for me. My Dad bought it in a "old lady with a case in the closet" deal in 1989 (ish?) for a ridiculously low price and it was kind of just always around. Being Norlin guitar, and my Dad being strictly a Rhythm Player and Lead Singer in his cover bands, he understandably found it to be way too heavy for a 4 hour bar gig so he mostly played it around the house. I will never forget waking up before everyone and walking into my Dad's jam room where Excalibur (as we named it) was already plugged into the Hot Rod Deville and was basically just waiting for 3-year-old me to flip a switch and strum it. LOL I woke everyone up at like 6 AM. It was awesome. I played the intro to Layla on it when I was about 20 years old and my Dad said I should take it. I wasn't sure if I should hug him for ten years for the amazing gift or slap him in the face for teasing me so mercilessly. In any case, I traded him my MIJ Nashville Telecaster for it and it's been my baby ever since. But really...he said it was my guitar all along. He was just keeping it safe for when I was ready.
There is nothing so special as finding the "Right" les Paul for yourself in my experience as a guitar player. I have several guitars and they are all special for different reasons, but there is something about my nearly 13 LB, Mini Humbucker sporting, paddle head stock having, low/wide fretless wondering, clown busting slab of mahogany that just holds my very heart right in the neck pickup. They can definitely be special. It's not always about the particulars. Sometimes it's intangible. And a guitar, as mine is, can absolutely be priceless. Thanks for another great video in your incredible line of amazing videos. I appreciate what you do and why you do it! 🤘

Greeny weighs 8lbs 15oz now (without pickguard) and since they lose some weight over time, it could have been a touch over 9lbs back in the day. It's funny how the recent "weight weenie" trend has everyone seeking the lightest guitars but many of the best LP's in history were not feather weights. Les Paul himself wanted mass in the guitar. To me, Greeny's 9lb weight is right in the sweet spot for a Les Paul and clearly it worked well for Peter, Gary and now Kirk.

John is such a great player and the tones he crafts, often with a Helix, are just stellar. Keith has linked his channel and it’s highly recommended. He gives guitar lessons and thoughtfully reviews gear there.
Each video usually begins with a performance-a song often based on a loop that John creates more or less in front of your eyes (adding percussion, bass and mixing offline). He then solos over it for several minutes. It seems like he posts 2 videos most days- so there’s just a phenomenal amount of quality content and wonderful legato based lead guitar soloing, sometimes some straight forward jazz.
John has a dry wit and a bunch of dogs who help keep things entertaining. He comes across as remarkably humble given his talent.

I love Peter Green enough to give the "Greeny" treatment to my own Epi Les Paul. Flipping the magnet over, not the wiring polarity, along with rotating the pickup 180 is definitely the way to get to the tone closest to the real thing. I only had to relocate the ground wire to get it to reach. I've left it this way ever since, and I've found it to be a more versatile, interesting, and unique guitar than it ever would have been.

Played “Greeny” years ago after hours at Guitar Show ( I think it was Dallas). It sounded surprisingly thin compared to most of the Les Pauls I play which I loved as I prefer single coils overall. It had slightly scooped mids and lower mids and it sang!! Very dynamic which I attributed to the age of the pickups. Never quite heard that sound until I borrowed a friend’s Oxblood Les Paul that turned out to have a dead coil in the bridge pickup. After repairing the pickup, a brilliant guitar tech ran the repaired coil to one of the pots so that when fully on it shunted the coil to ground making it single coil but if on 9 was mostly humbucking. Somehow I was able to get all the Peter Green tones I was looking for thru my Marshall and Bassman amps. Hopefully one day my friend will let me buy it from him- it’s still my favorite.

As you can imagine and near tears, Kirk called his guitar tech who told him not to worry, based on the pictures he could fix it. Interesting part of the story as Kirk tells it, Greeny's neck was broken before when Gary Moore had the guitar. According to Kirk, the guitar was in the truck of a car when it got rear-ended.

I once owned a classical guitar that was given to me in the 70's, it had the most beautiful tone and literally whatever I played on it would sound incredible, I created some of my best work with it, some of it was recorded by my friend who had a 1 inch tape recorder, many years later he said to me 'Listen to this' it was me playing some amazing scales, I could not believe what I was listening to. I gave the guitar away years later on a whim, and regret it now but that's life, it moves along. But I'm telling you that their is magic in an instrument, OH YES.

About the neck pickup. The most consistent and plausible story for it that it was redone by a guy called Sam Li, a well known luthier at the time in London. The story goes that someone poured a pint of beer into the next pickup after a row with Green, this destroyed the pickup. Peter took it to Li who rewound it. He also replaced the wire to the controls with one that has slightly more resistance than what Gibson used (as that was what was available in the UK) reversing the magnet in the process. The tone of the pickup isn't just down to the flipped magnet, but also this wire that adds to the scooped sound of the pickup when it is used on its own, something Gary would use a lot.
There has been a comparison (done by Guitar&Bass magazine) between the pickup in the Greeny and other guitars, most notably Dave Hill of Slade's Sam Li 'Gibson Custom' (a ES neck with a brand new body) that has the exact same wire used on the rewound pickups.

And the joke in spinal tap is how their drummers are disposable, but in the Mac; the guitarists were always main songwriters and the frontmen. 3 years is longer than most bands even live.

Though I've known of Peter Green all of my life, I've only recently started really digging into his playing. Part of that is owed to going to see Kenny Wayne Sheppard last year and hearing his band cover "Oh Well." I'd forgotten how much I liked that song. Now digging into more early Fleetwood Mac and the John Mayall albums he played on. Thanks!

I never understood the fear of many for out of phase sounds.
Yes, sometimes it’s not what you want, but believe me when I say that sometimes it’s EXACTLY what I want. I cannot help but thinking that people tend to prefer listening with their eyes and/or their brains, instead of listening with their ears. Fortunately we all love and accept the out of phase sound of Peter Green’s Les Paul. ‘Normally’ these out of phase sounds are deemed to be wroooong!!!
They’re not wrong! They’re cool! Embrace these tones. Use them!
I think I just let myself go a little here. Thanks, Keith. 😊

Phenomenal video, I admit as an owner of the $50,000 custom shop Greeny, the video is very close to my heart. They are 1 off clones that reproduce the Greeny sound amazingly well through a 5 watt 1967 fender champ. That being said the channel moto of “less gear” just couldn’t be used with this example. For those whom will say “doctor/lawyer wall art” your dead wrong the vast majority of the $50K custom shop Greenys are suffering from major player wear as we can not seem to set them down!

Keith ~ Love all your vids and this is no exception. A couple of things: 1) You are correct about what passed for quality control in the early days of Gibson electrics. I had a ‘54 Les Paul Custom Black Beauty, with the bridge P-90 and the neck “Staple” single coil pickup. An all original, 1954 LP Custom Black Beauty. In the middle toggle position that guitar had the same “honk” of the Greeny Les Paul. It was assembled incorrectly, like the examples you gave. One of the pickups was out of phase, so that was the resulting sound. I hated the sound, at the time. But it was 1964 and I was only 17, so … Little did I know then, but I would actually have one of my Gibsons modded up to get that sound about 30 years later. 2) As we all know, sometimes a player and a certain instrument meld together and the “magic” happens. In my life I’ve owned many, many guitars, and almost all have been excellent instruments. A couple weren’t as good as I thought they’d be, but the great majority were worth having and playing. Out of all those fine guitars, there have been only three that had that certain something. Whenever I played them, there was something else going on between me and those instruments. “The magic” happened. I would always feel that I was a better player; the sound and playability of those guitars was inspiring, so I always have played well on them. Probably not a surprise to anyone, but they’re all ‘60s guitars: a Gibson acoustic, a Gibson ES 345, and a Strat. I believe Peter Green’s LP is one of those guitars-with him playing it, “the magic” was there.

I've been playing a '23 "Greeny" standard Les Paul that I acquired in a trade. I recently changed the pickups for Arcane Tim Phillips humbuckers and the guitar sounds amazing! 9.5 pounds. Very resonant. I'm very happy with it and don't plan on letting it go. I'll hold on to the original pickups just in case, but the Arcane humbuckers just sound so much better and the guitar is great. No regrets!

I'm a true-blue early 50's Tele guy... but was quite smitten listening the Green in the late 80's when bandmates played early FM, then Moore... I learned the story, and my interest in a Greenie LP kept growing. Owning Greenie and the original Parsons-White B-bender Tele wad my version of heaven.
I'm not a Hammett fan, but I hear that guitar's distinct voice in his playing.
I plan on buying a set of these pickups, and building my own Greenie... Thanks for the additional info on the guitar.... wish me luck.
BTW, kudos to your guest players... sweet, sweet playing... and I'm with BB... Green made me sweat too... his touch was magic... amd that's where most tone comes from.... and why Hammett doesn't quite cut it in spite of owning that legendary piece.
I will not pay Gibson that much for a LP... even Epiphone... I've my work cut put for me.... but kudos to Gibson to capitalize on Green, and Moore... now THOSE GUYS, had the touch.
    Thanks for this video.

I just bought one of the production Greeny's (the $3k one). I love it. It sounds and plays amazing. Of course it isn't 100% spec'd to the original (hence the cheaper $3k pricetag), but it's a good representation for those of us who aren't into relic'd guitars or who are working class musicians (and can't afford to drop $20/50k). I'd suggest anyone who is curious should try one and buy one. Just my two cents as a Moore and Green fan.

I have a reverse mounted pickup, but for a different reason. It’s on a Baretta so phase isn’t an issue, but when I swapped out the pickup I added a coil split. In humbucker mode it doesn’t really matter which way it’s mounted, but in single coil it is very noticeable. I tried it both way and at the end of the day pole pieces on top sounded better. I believe that’s the part that’s still in use when split on my JB clone.

In one of the shots is the cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Then Play On". I wonder if many people know that the British and U.S, releases are slightly different in terms of song selection and running order. That supposedly has been corrected on the reissue from several years ago which include the Danny Kirwan songs that were on the U,K. release, deleted in favor of the inclusion of the song, "Oh Well". The jam, "Searching For Madge" and "Fighting For Madge" which had originally been on different sides of the U.K. release were "jammed" together when Reprise changed the running order on the U.S. version back in 1969. For a snippet of time, the U.S. version was the same as the British, but because of lagging sales, it was immediately pulled and the new release with the song "Oh Well" began stocking the stores. I had a chance to see that line-up of the band at Fillmore East in the fall of 1969 but alas, my parents felt I was wasting too much of my time at that fabled establishment and hence, missed it. I missed Jimi Hendrix and The Band of Gypsy's by two days. As Pete Townsend said of people who missed seeing Jimi Hendrix "live", "I'm sorry."
