REJECTED FOR PERMANENT RESIDENCY IN SINGAPORE - My thoughts about why I was rejected

- In this video, I share my personal experience of being rejected for permanent residency in Singapore and delve into the reasons behind it. With over four years of living in Singapore, a stable job in the IT industry, and a strong integration into the local community, I thought my chances were good. However, the rejection letter left me reflecting on possible reasons for my rejection.
One possibility is that it’s still too soon for me to apply, coming from France. Perhaps, more time is needed for me to adapt to the local culture. Another reason could be the limited number of spots available for PR each year, especially for individuals from Europe. With the current circumstances, I had hoped that fewer people applying during COVID-19 would increase my chances, but it seems that’s not the case.
Looking at my profile, I realize that there are areas I can improve on for my next application. Having family ties in Singapore could make the process easier, but I don’t want to rush into marriage just for PR. Career-wise, I can aim for a higher position or consider changing my industry to align with Singapore’s high-demand sectors. Increasing my contributions to local charities or volunteering my time could also demonstrate a stronger commitment to the community. Additionally, having more investments and assets in Singapore would show my long-term commitment to the country. Although I’m disappointed with the rejection, I am determined to continue applying and exploring ways to enhance my profile for future applications.
While some applicants choose to seek help from agencies, I prefer to navigate the process myself, at least for now. However, if I face repeated rejections, I may consider seeking professional advice.
To all those who are applying for PR or have faced rejection, I wish you the best of luck. Don’t lose hope, and keep trying. Success may just be around the corner.

Hi Amandine,
I got friend who got rejected few times and finally she got it. I not sure she applied how many times but I know many times, so plaese don't give up keep trying take care.
Thanks for sharing!! Will just keep trying!
I‘m from Austria, I hope you enjoy your time in Vienna and of course your whole trip to Europe in winter! All the best for applying for PR!
I hope so! It will be my first time, do let me know if you have recommendations!
I'm not sure how true it is, but i have heard that certain race and country plays a big role in getting the pr approved. Eg. If you're Malaysian Chinese, the chance of your PR getting approved is much much higher than others due to the similarities of culture etc etc. But anyway, keep trying.😊
Yes, I think more than related to their race is how easy you assume they will adapt to the culture :) Coming from Malaysia, it won't be a huge shock as compared to France haha
haha yes, we keep our race proportion constant, apparently, it is a rather open secret among the new migrants. I used to hate the migration policies but after looking at the rallies in the west the past month, well, I am thankful. The majority here is Chinese, Indian is the smallest of the 3 main races and Muslim is 14% (I learnt from another UA-cam channel and it seems like the golden ration according to the foreign entrepreneurs in that video). Outside of the 3 main races, the remaining % is quite small but if you are say an UN translator, you would get the PR or even citizenship pretty quickly (again, heard from another channel). The percentage is maintained in every housing estates as well, I believe in the past, we have different ethnic kampongs (villages) and there were frequent fights among the different ethnic groups so this race proportion has been in place for decades.
tqt pas my friend to my knowledge, PR is much harder to get nowadays so don't give up and try again! asian and neighbouring countries do get a little advantage for PR but I also know of asian people who have trouble getting PR. it is natural
Yes, can't approved everyone so only the determined ones will get through 😂
I guess one possible reason is that the "Other" race quota is very small, so the competition is very steep for that category. Anyway they definitely use some scoring system to decide, so keep grinding away and gaming the variables!!!
Yes, I guess I'm fighting with many many people to get there! I thought would have more spot after covid but...
Put yourself in the shoe of the people in ICA. If you were them, what criteria do you think will be important. Singapore is facing a demographic problem. Singaporeans are ageing with less children. I think Singapore's immigration goal will be to correct those trends by choosing people who will form family units that will contribute to a young labour force with the necessary skillset. Also I think the ICA will place a lot of emphasis on cultural integration - favouring three ethnicities - Chinese, Indians, possibly Malays - because they are more likely to stay in Singapore. Being French place you at a distinct disadvantage. Marrying a Singaporean will help
But as a foreigner in Singapore, it's difficult to have babies when you don't have stability yet - I mean I guess marriage should come first, we will get there evntually!
@@NewtoSingapore OP isn't saying you need to have babies to qualify for PR but that having legal married status helps. Btw I read that charitable donations don't really factor into the consideration but volunteering in some capacity does.
Hi! Just my two cents worth. Perhaps you would like to watch & listen to the rich experience of this lovely Ang Moh lady who got her PR status the first time. She was very active in community works & submitted too a pile of letters of recommendations. The title is "Will she ever truly belong in Singapore?" Her interviewer is Russian guy, Max Chernov, my favourite UA-cam guy. BTW, this rich guy also was rejected. Wish both of you all the best!
Singapore wants people who CAN CONTRIBUTE TO ITS SOCIETY. Heard that some rich foreigners thought that donating huge sum of monies is the gateway to success. Sorry lah.
Who wouldn't be touched when you hear her talking about her love and passion for Singapore?
Thank you for the tips, I will go and check it out! Being active in the community is something I'm trying to be mindful of - like volunteering... Will try to intensify my efforts for my next application!
What a nice accent. Good luck applying in the future!!
Thank you! 😃
Thanks for making this! Very informative and helpful. Hope you get yours soon
Glad it was helpful!
Really sorry to hear your PR got rejected.
Before I met my wife, she was rejected 5 times. Her PR was finally approved when I acted as her sponsor through marriage. It took about 7 months for approval.
I'm glad she finally got her PR! I guess it might take me a few tries too!
Please keep trying. I don’t think ICA’s decision was personal, but it’s probably because there’s too many Malaysians applying with insufficient PR slots. I have friends who are Malaysian but not Chinese and they’ve been rejected too. But I’ve heard of cases where rejected applicants across various nationalities not giving up and eventually getting the PR!
Yes, I'm not planning on giving up - I'm not in a terrible position where if I can't get it at the minute I have to leave Singapore, I will keep applying until maybe I get it!
As adivsed by other commenters, just try again and keep trying. Singapore like Australia has rules with regards to permanet residency.
Yes, no choice anyway haha
Don't waste your money on charity and investments. It's too little. It won't help. Your main strength is your career and age (young) and the chance of forming a family unit that will stay in Singapore. Focus on those. I strongly believe that if you marry a Singaporeans and with Singapore child, thats a sure thing
Not necessarily, got foreigners who are married to Singaporean who still can't get PR.
@@silverchairsg Of course the husband must be have the necessary condition. Have children is the key!!
But I don't really want to rush this to get my PR status, it will come eventually but I have time to apply a few times first!
Young age having good employment is your asset. Charity is a waste of time.
@@NewtoSingaporeApplying multiple times is likely good. Maybe they think you do not actually want to stay in SG long term so applying multiple times shows commitment. Good luck
Don’t give up. You will succeed one day. For me I came to Singapore in the 1970’s . Because I work for the government I was given provisional PR on being employed. The catch is I have to work for the government for 6 years before my PR is approved with no condition of employment. Because I liked my job I just worked for 6 years . I suppose if you like staying here then just work in Singapore for a few years. You will definitely get the PR.
Oh, I guess they need workforce back then! Luckily you got in that scheme and enjoyed the work! For me, yes, as long as I have a work pass I can stay in Singapore anyway!
I'm an American by nationality but Vietnamese by ethnicity. I'm 48 and have been in SG now 2.5 yrs. I've been married to my Singaporean husband for 1 year. We applied for PR for me back in Nov 2023. We just got PR IPA letter last week. 😊
I've never worked in Singapore so haven't paid any taxes. I tried looking for jobs and applying but on an LTVP (with PLOC), many companies wouldn't give me time of day.
I did volunteer with the local library but it was just 1 time. I also have a master degree from a US university so I don't know if that helped. Both my husband and I are over child-bearing age so we won't have any kids.
I know that you don't want to rush marriage just for the sake of PR but I think marriage to a local increases your approval rate. But with that said, I also know of people who have lived in Singapore a long time, married to a local, they have gainful employment AND birthed Singaporean children but still got rejected. So it is a game of lottery really. Definitely get married for the right reasons and not just to get PR. My husband's cousin who does some volunteer work with his area's MP have told me that ICA is really cracking down on scam marriages for PR/citizenship bcos it's been happening too much. I'm not saying it's what you intend to do but just putting it out there that ICA really scrutinizes these kinds of marriages. My husband and I have known each other for 4 yrs before we married so we were prepared to show evidence of our courtship should ICA asked for it but they didn't. 😅
Good luck on your PR journey! 🍀
Thank you for sharing your story! Very insightful as I've never heard from this point of view - I guess now you are well settled in Singapore with your husband!
We will have things "happen naturally", marriage and wedding wise, and just be positive about the situation, no matter how long it takes :)
Bonjour . Getting PR approved is much harder these days . I know of a Malaysian Chinese who has been here for 15 years and has tried for the past few years without success . There is the political and economical side to it . However , if you truly like this country , you may want to try again but not too soon . Give it a 2 years rest before you try again . Meantime , try to integrate into society by joining local activities , helping out with a couple of local charities and if you are good in sports , join a local women's team . Naturally , marrying a local is a big plus but not an absolute necessity . Good luck .
Yes, I think it's natural anyway to integrate more with the community as you spend more time. If one is motivated and want to spend his time in Singapore, it will eventually happen 🤷♀️
same situation with me haha! But now i'm on 2nd try of becoming PR in Singapore... Goodluck to us :)
Fingers crossed!
Stay positive I’m sure you’ll get it sooner than later, good luck. One suggestion maybe let ICA know about your UA-cam channel to show that you are always pro Singapore had nothing but good things to say about Singapore😊
Thank you :) The thing is, you can't give additional documents to prove how attached you are to Singapore - another example having a Singaporean boyfriend doesn't count. They really take into account what you can put in the form so job, family...
I’m also sponsoring my husband for PR so I feel for your situation! From my research however, I do think the chances are high for you after marriage if your Singaporean partner is male. I’ve heard it’s more 50-50 for me as the Singaporean female with a foreign husband as the government thinks we are likely to leave. But I agree, don’t be in a hurry to marry and you are still young! The longer you live in Singapore, the stronger your application anyway.
Oh, really! I didn't consider which partners is Singaporean actually, should look more into that!
UA-camr Ghib Ojisan got his PR & his spouse is S’porean female 😂 Helps that he does tons of videos promoting S’pore food, culture, etc
Many thanks for sharing your experience. Im 28 years old and Im staying only 6 months in Singapore. But Im applying for a PR this month.. Could you help me with below questions please?
1) Do we need to upload Volunteering, Society contribution certificates, Cover letter reference letters when applying for PR?
2) If yes, do we have the option to upload those letters?
All the best for your application! You don’t need to submit any additional documents - all is connected through your FIN number
hello, thanks for sharing your experience.
Would like to check whether u check the status in ica from time to time? did u get 4 lines before seeing the rejected status? thank you again!
What do you mean by the 4 lines? I only checked once and didn't see anything besides pending 🤷♀️
Many non-chinese graduates who studied in NTU/NUS between 2010-2018 are still getting rejected to this day.... Some have been rejected more than 10 times... I would say Singapore PR for non-chinese is a lottery ...Don't depend on outcome and don't take it personally... Don't invest too much time or money in SG.. Unless you are marrying a citizen
Yeah, it can definitely feel frustrating when PR applications don’t go through, especially when it seems like some people are getting rejected over and over. It’s not exactly a lottery, but there are so many factors that go into it-like your industry, how long you’ve been here, and how integrated you are into society. It’s true that for non-Chinese applicants, the process can sometimes take longer...
@@NewtoSingapore 2-5 yrs in singapore is like honeymoon phase.... Once you are 10 yrs or more in Singapore, you will have a better understanding of it...
Don't take it to heart. PR status is a bit of a lottery, and a bit of timing, Currently, Singaporeans are anti-foreigners or at least there are a sufficient number of vocal Singaporeans who are anti-Foreigners. Or at least foreigners who may be taking their jobs. Look at the ground feelings (of the vocal Singaporeans). When the "ground is sweet", apply again. Good luck.
Yes, I will wait a little and prove myself a little longer and we will see ^^
"Or at least foreigners who may be taking their jobs." what a joke. Foreigners and foreign companies are creating most of the jobs in Singapore, to say they are stealing your job is a joke haha
Hello mam I also got 3 time study visa rejection from singapore ICA can I 😢 apply for singapore work permit?
You have to find a job and then a company will sponsor your visa
What is the rejection rate for Singapore PR?
We know that the rejection rate for candidates who independently apply for Singapore Permanent Resident (PR) status is between 90 and 95 per cent.
Keep trying,who knows ?
God favour those who favour themselves.Good luck to you.😊
I'm not sure but must be quite high as every year only about 30k get approved but I don't know how many apply...
@@NewtoSingapore Yeap. Its a good thing you liked Singapore and hopefully a nice stay in Singapore for your experience.Gracias Singapore. :)
Dont Give up. It happens all the time . Keep Trying till you get it 💪
Always! Will try again and again!
Hi. Thanks for sharing ! How to attach additional documents ?
You can't attach additional documents, only provide the documents ICA ask for
It is not about money. We have more than enough rich people in Singapore. What you have is just peanuts. Volunteerism, serving the community. Doing something meaningful to the society. Write a motivation letter about your commitment to the country. Off course, our priority for PR are giving to our neighbouring countries. It is the same in Europe. Asians have less priority to obtain PR in any European countries. It is normal, you will never know why you are rejected. It is every immigration in the world. Show your sincerity to contribute to society instead of talking about money.
Yes, there are many factors and your contribution is counted in all forms!
Hope you will get it soon.
Will reapply soon!
Does anyone know under which section you can upload a cover letter?
Actually cover letters are not accepted, you have to give only the documents that are mentioned!
I believe they may use the testimonial section
I was rejected too. no idea about the reasons
You won't know but you can try to improve your profile and reapply 🤷♀️
How can they know if you make donations?
...Because you can put it on the application form...
Actually, no, it's because you use your ID number so all is linked!
I think it's best to apply through agency. I find this strange. I mean you're from France, the people in Singapore like Western people. I don't know why you were rejected.
Applying through an agency is not cheap - it's almost $5,000 (with no guarantees)! So if you have the time to organise your papers and not in a rush just like me (I'm still able to stay in Singapore with a stable job), it's still better to apply on your own. And more goes to your PR application than just where you are from - like the your roots, involvement and investment in Singapore for the long term and that's what we have to prove somehow!
All the best
Thank you!
once you ROM with your husband to be, chances of getting a PR will be higher. 😏
Yes, haha! I wait that day
1st preference malaysia chinese, 2nd is PRC chinese.
ang mo very difficult unless you millionaire.
I will try to make more money then :D
