  • Creed is a movie that's better than it had any right to be and that's all thanks to director Ryan Coogler's approach to intimate storytelling. Let me break down how he does it.

Cheers my dude, was kinda surprised it still runs so smooth considering where I'm at now vs back then.

Want reassurance that it's not a date? Peep what Bianca gets on her cheesesteak. There will be no kiss goodnight 😂 Coogler's attention to Philly is insane!

This is such a beautiful, niuanced scene analysis, not only showcasing your ultra-high level of film knowledge, but also your deep understanding of how humans work in general. Wow.

Creed is incredible, I have similar thoughts on Warrior from 2011.
Michael B Jordan is the man.

Warriors is so underappreciated. Outright one of my favorite endings ever.

Love to see a fellow video essayist doing great work! We're at about the same amount of subs so I know the grind you're going through! Hit me up if you'd ever like to do some work together

Hey I have to say that the 5 years on Friday Night Lights under director Peter Berg really made some great actors out of the young cast. Michael B Jordan, Taylor Kitsch, Jesse Plemons, Matt Luria. They used many of these techniques to make a really wonderful stand the test of time storytelling entertainment

I'd love to watch a sitdown between Ryan Coogler and Bradley Cooper because Creed and A Star is Born feel like kindred spirits. Both films shouldn't work on paper and yet deliver the most intimate storytelling. I don't know if it's the Philly connection or if both directors have some similarities, but both films make me feel something.

You are SO bad for my DVD buying as after each one of these videos - I need to check out the works of the author/director and so this time it is another three DVDs that I will be buying.

The "realest shit" at 7:20 actually happens a lot in mumblecore movies. Of course your insight is still great and your point still stands, but I think it'd just be a cool thing to add. Awesome analysis anw!

Yeah for sure! It's just incredibly rare to see it in a scripted blockbuster as opposed to something like an Andrea Arnold or Harmony Korine piece.

What song plays in the background at 10:00? I know it's the Creed theme, but that specific lighter version I wanna know.

Donny helping Bianca with her hair and the conversation they have during it is my favorite moment in the movie.

It was a very good movie but nothing that deep or profound. It's just a very well made but predictable and by the numbers film

I found it very profound. Like Bailey said, "We're tied to a past that's beyond our control."
We can't run from it, we can't fight it, but we can learn to deal with it like Donny.
