    You got my like.
I would not mind seeing you cover the entire Desert of Desolation series. Pharaoh, Oasis of the White Palm, and Lost Tomb of Martek.

Seriously, the first time I saw this module I thought it was set in Scotland.
Also, DMing this module is the cause of my only TPK (of which I am not proud).

9:26 I recently read a module with a tower in it and learned that one way to make them less linear is to put a magical levitation elevator in it so that they can choose which floor to explore first.

We had so much fun with this adventure as players and myself later as a DM.
Mostly I remember the Fire Giant and it's why I bought a Fire Giant miniature at the time.

Really enjoying the old school reviews. The critiques and alterations on the plots and MacGuffins are something new, my group took them all verbatim and without judgement back in the day.

The Sword and The Sorcerer is the best representation of the D&D hit point system. Our intrepid hero Talon Falls 3 stories, fights 50 men, is knocked unconscious and is crucified. Later that same day he pulls himself free from the crucifixion , kills the main bad guy and a demon. And to wrap the day up he sleeps with the main love interest (all night long, no doubt).
I`d like to point out that the practical effect of reflecting light off of a blade to represent enchantment hasn`t been improved by cgi.

Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke of Urnst,

As I walk through this world
Nothing can stop the Duke of Urnst

    So I can get,

I've been to inverness. I didn't see any ghost towers or barbarians. Incidentally, the word 'geas' is lowland scots for 'give me'. "Geas a swalae' means 'Give me a drink' for example.

Thanks for that capt :) This is the 2nd module I've set in my old school campaign. The players have just completed The Sinister Secret of Salt Marsh and will now be heading west to explore The Ghost Tower of Inverness. I haven't read through it recently but my campaign is on hiatus for 4 months so I'll have plenty time to prep it. Good to know there is a major Macguffin at the heart of this as that will be crucial for the final module, Palace of the SIlver Princess. The follow up for GT will be KotBL, then the players will then have to solve the mystery of the Crystal Caves before being dragged into the horror of Castle Amber. [I think its a great scary module if played right]
I'm using old school modules as the base of the campaign as I feel they just work better. Of course they're adjusted for the PC's levels etc. Anyway, looking forward to your next review.
    Take care :)

You are aewsome Capt. Thank you for your old school review. I love how you suggest to fit it into current 5e D&D. Thank you again sir for doing expedition to barrier peaks. This one will truly special to me, plan on watching that video with my son. I owe you Capt will make it up to in the future. Thank you again and have a great day.

What I found when I ran a 5e version of Tomb of Horrors (that Perkins put in Dragon Magazine) for a group of younger players who never went through it was that the AD&D recommended levels don't work as well for the generally overpowered 5e characters. The DM running it should check the work against the 5e DM Guide encounter building guidelines to be sure which level character should go through the dungeon.
I still have my copy of this module from the 1980s!!!!

I'm not sure if I ever would have used this kind of module as they were published - they aren't really my adventure style, and wouldn't fit the existing "campaign" - but instead I would have stolen bits and ideas for my own adventures, and of course used the art as inspiration.

Admittedly, as a tournament module it's meant to be a straight line adventure. That way no group can complain about being led astray as there's only one way to go. The characters as well were designed with this goal in mind, and the railroading is required to give them the reason they need to go on this adventure.
I like this adventure a lot. I think I may have run it back in the day, but only once or twice. I mainly used it as an idea mine, and it has so much value as that. It's worth buying and owning just for the value of the concepts within it.

  • @johnharrison2086

Oh yes, the Soul Gem. In our campaign it was incorporated into The Queen of the Spiders adventure and played a part on why the PCs will get their heads chopped off if they do not kick the giants’ asses.

I've read it, but never run it, or run through it. My take on the "You are criminals that must do this quest or die!" scenario is: "Ok." Then when you get to the adventure site, just keep going.

I remember this one because I loved the name, but was a little disappointed by how barren the content was. I think I enjoyed reading the modules as much as playing them so any that had elaborate stories stick out in my mind more.

Well, I try to balance my reviews with spoilery stuff. There were a lot of traps, like the chess room and so on that I enjoyed, but didn't want to spoil the surprise for those who might play it. :)

@@captcorajus I meant items like adequacy of box text, innovativness of battle setup, quality of BBEG, story cohesiveness and such, but yes no spoilers. I enjoy the background of the preparation of the writers though and maybe you could add how easy to adjust to OSR or 5e setting
