2:24 -- OMG... Central Casting. My GM used to use that on occasion for character background generation back in the day. All I remember is my friend rolling up a character that basically died of old age before he even got to play the character. It was something like, "Military service. Roll again." And he kept rolling it. lol.
i loved the forgotten realms supplement series. they were very useful and made the individual regions so much easier to run. excellent coverage of the FR 1
You make one of the best jobs about RPG here in You Tube. Unfortunately it's English content and many of us from Brazil can't get it because of the language. Wish we Brazilians had the luck to have a good chanel about it in Portuguese too. Keep it up the good work. Congrats! 🤘
One of my favorite setting books ever! I am a Realms DM for sure and will be for a long time to come . Thanks for this great video ! Pls consider doing more of the FR series.
Great review. I never really got into the Realms too much because the setting seemed really scattered. This review really provided a useful overview and tied it all together.
At 4:57 there is a region called Boitumelo, that's quite interesting as in South Africa that is someone's name in seSotho meaning "happiness" - spelled exactly the same way.
Interestingly enough, the drivethrurpg listing for this book does not include the standard denunciation Wizards puts on their older material calling every writer before now as racist/sexist/bigot/homophobes. Wonder why not this one?
I love this product. I used it quite extensively for the Savage Frontier campaign I just finished recently. It culminated with them releasing the Red Dragon from the Uthgardt mound so Uthgar could use it as a vessel for his avatar to defeat Shar - lots of epic fun.
This edition of FR was the best, because the material offered so many opportunities for exploration and adventure. Sadly, by 5e it's all so crowded and the players overshadowed by novel NPCs.
It really is though. Dungeon Masters don't put in the work they once needed for a successful campaign. I like 5th edition but do NOT want to DM it. Out of 5 or 6 different 5th edition campaigns I've been in the longest lasting one was just under one year. My last Greyhawk 2nd edition campaign in the Loftwick region of Greyhawk lasted just about 5 years, and my group has played together since 1995. Right now we are into finishing a year of Dark Sun. Players are 6th and 7th level with about 5 or 6 PC deaths. That's about the norm for my game. Dark Sun players will UNDERSTAND this last bit. (It's deadly out there in Athas!) Death in 5th edition is scarce. It took that 3 or 4 vampire lair above the coffinmaker in Ravenloft to kill a warrior I had. The DM had one of them throw me out the window after I had 0 hit points. (Instead of drinking from my corpse?). Some players knew hit point totals of the creatures we fought and it cheapened the experiance.
When I was young, I had a demo cd of 21 or whatever number of AD&D games. Some just demos; others full games for the time. This was the 90's or early 2000's. I kinda miss those days when I would see a name like Eye Of The Beholder or Pool of Radiance or Forgotten Realms or Baldur's Gate and be amazed by these mysterious places I got an opportuniity to play a video game from. Now these days I have learned more of these places. Sometimes people talk about them as if they have been oversaturated and sometimes people still talk about them with reverence. But I have learned to sit back and enjoy people like Captcorajus. And while I miss those ignorant days when these mysterious places, I got to play video games within. I wouldn't trade it for the fine UA-camrs I know of today.
FWIW, Griffin Mountain is a whole campaign setting supplement covering a new region of Glorantha located some distance from Dragon Pass, not just an adventure. Quite a bit like Prax/Big Rubble/Pavis in that regard. Whole lot of meat in that chunky tome.
Love to have you on our game room for game weekend sometime cap!!! We are in Austin and actually play with Steve winter, Zeb cook and diesel LaForce is a regular on the group.
It would if I had it. However, I think I'll just get Stephen Chenault to come on the channel and talk about it and all the other cool stuff in the cue. How's that?
I do wish all the cool lore was presented in a more gameable context. Dungeons are mentioned, none are mapped/keyed. Monster populations are described, no ready to use encounter tables are given. Magic items are described in vague terms, as opposed to the more utilitarian DMG format. I get that AD&D in general had been reacting away from its Arneso-Gygaxian wargaming roots for a while already around this point in time (*mature* gamers don't roll up encounters randomly!), so maybe this vagueness was a deliberate statement and not simply a series of unfortunate omissions?
This is a supplement/ region book. Lore, the people, notable NPCs are its goal. This is the place where you'll find the 'Dungeon of Death'.. but this supplement only tells you its there, its imagination fuel only. You can TOTALLY run this with very little prep if you're familiar with the material, but certainly this is not meant to provide the DM with a ready made adveture(s)
@@captcorajus Oh, the lore is great. I wouldn't cut that by any means. I just mean that a more robust "scaffolding" of gaminess supporting it would have made it an even better product for me.
Hi capt-c..Forgotten realms and other D&D lore seems tired to me at this point. 4e was more interesting than 5e because at least they invented a new setting, even if they abandoned the gazeteer that it was rumored that they were going to create...my rating is: let's move on. ... Have a good day!
I appreciate the input, but the views and positive comments seem to contradict this viewpoint as the consensus. This era and region of the FR has a special place for me personally as well. I was heavy into the novels released at this time, running a fun campaign that lasted for years. Hard to not dedicate some time to it... so please bear with my while I indulge. 😀
@@captcorajus ya...i don't really care about consensus beyond what is at the table. i am just saying that the stuff has all been looted at this point. :)

The Savage Frontier and the Forgotten Realms boxed set made me love Toril and the lands of Faerun. Great video!
Great review. I lost my copy or someone borrowed it forever. This made me want to find another. Thank you.

Love to see 2nd edition getting some love. Great video hoping to seem many more very soon.
Definitely!!
This was my favourite FR book.
Thank you.
Awesome! I really enjoy these FR supplements, absolute classics!
I had to look up the history when you were saying Jennell Jaquays and the covers said Paul Jaquays. Very modern, but fair enough.

Great stuff. I'm more of Greyhawk man, but FR is great too.

Greyhawk is and always will be my goto campaign world. I did like this box set though.
This is different than the Savage North Box Set
Probably my favorite FR module.
YAAAAAAAYYYYY! Can’t wait to listen to this!
Great vid, Cap! I modded the Accursed Tower too. Love that region, and the IWD pc games.

"Days of Thunder"? 😂 Somewhere in town is an old barn. In that barn is an unknown dusty chariot with the odd name "Cole Trickle" on it. 😉

I have this one Captain. Forgotten Realms is massive. I collected most of these specifically for the maps.
Great video. I did not know that Janelle Jacquays had worked on Griffon Mountain (which is excellent 👌). Good stuff
Paul Jacquays
Janelle did not, Paul did.
'no example encounter table, make your own'
Lot of these on Ebay are missing One or BOTH maps, folks need to check before hand.
Absolutely!
A great summary Cptn, reminded me why I loved the Savage North, though I have long fell out of love with D&D and the Forgotten Realms.
I don't much care for any other part of FR, but this area is my favorite. I've spent a LOT of time here with my Waterdeep Campaign.
Good to see you Captn
You gotta add the GG pic back to the intro!
Jennell's impact on the hobby is pretty amazing. She's surely one of the great!
