It takes a lot of discipline to get road chops before you hit the road, and recording an album after being on the road definitely has advantages. What Chris said is totally true about going to any street in a city where the street is called central Ave and whatever cross street and 9 times out of 10 you can find hard drugs.. because i'm a recovering heroin addict in Chicago, and when I was an active user my drug pick up spot was always on central ave and 16th street on the west side lol. I always wondered and it blows my mind that bands like Megadeth, Jimmy Chamberlin of the smashing pumpkins and Ministry were hardcore heroin addicts and were on the road in a diff city every day but still managed to keep up with their habit. Being a heroin addict alone is like a full time job and consumes your life.
Ex heroin addict here, but also i was a few months on speed and i have to admit Chris is describing it perfect. i mean he ain't BS-ing people, he told the truth. Only thing is that with alcohol when you don't have H it can push you into heavier shivering and cravings after a 1-2 hours after you drink. So i understand why he drank 20 min before going on the stage. Damn that going with taxi in a new city lol i did that to. Chris is amazing player and i like his honesty.
I've always said this was the best Megadeth lineup. I wish they could have made a third album together. I was so thrilled when Chris was the guitarist on The System has Failed.
Good video and lots of honesty. Chris was my favorite and had big clear lead tones and later Jeff was good too, very musical leads. Marty is awesome too. "Peace Sells" is in a class all by it's self. I had the poster on my living room wall along with a Metallica poster and Frehley's Comet had a decent album then too. 👍
One of Megadeth's most underrated albums. Funny because that was like the big comeback record and I feel like it's since fallen into obscurity. To me, it is/was very significant.
Legal ones slip under the radar a lot. Crap needs to be taught in school more. We had D.A.R.E., but it needs to be more comprehensive on dopamine itself, and having speakers speak that have been through it and made it out the other side.
I know the R.I.P lineup is the best but fuck that first lineup up with The Dave's and Chris and Gar was insane so underated. Thanks for this interview this was great
The first time I saw Megadeth was with Mike Albert on guitar opening for Exciter. The next time was in a tiny club a few months later. I’m not sure if Chris was back with them yet.
I know right! I mean thats why I like heavy metal, not because of the image and the music, but for the sexy band members. Seriously mate, its heavy metal, it used to be almost entirely music made by men, for men. Pretty boy looks were for the glam metal bands.
pretty interesting that Poland was very honest and neutral about Mustaine's guitar style. He wasn't praising him beyond belief or sucking up or anything -- just a very level-headed and straight-up cool analysis! :)
Great concert for me in Greensboro as a kid. By the time we got there from Virginia...we were plastered. Don't even remember getting back from that road trip but it was the first of many trips I don't remember
Probably into Jazz then; Cuz they’d emulated both Bill Ward and Geezer from Black Sabbath infamy? Sincerely, DJP ex Anal Cunt; PostMortem and Kilslug Sony;Earache 🇬🇧 Columbia and TAANG!! Records @ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Boston Massachusetts Amerikkka of course 😮
Met him and Dave Jr back in the day across the street from the Stone night club......both of them are gone out of the band but they where pretty down to earth guys sorry to see them out of the band because they was the line up that made that era a classic.
Chris Poland has done a lot of good things in metal outside of his errors while abusing drugs… this guy is a redeemable character he’s got all kinds of great traits and a great band in OHM. Chris is a great band mate.
Mustaine has talked about how their "manager" took half of the $8,000 they were paid to literally buy drugs. But he wasn't a band manager, he was a drug dealer, and Dave said that at that time they assumed all heavy metal band managers were drug dealers. What doesn't get mentioned much is that yes, they were totally ripped off but that happens when you're a full-blown drug addict. Money, like everything else becomes an afterthought. It's probably a good thing they didn't have endless amounts of money in that part of the 80's or they might all be dead now.
On set the world afire, into the lungs of hell. Poland plays a lead that hangs the last note that goes on for so long it probably would make it into the Guinness book of records.
No doubt I don’t know how the hell they managed that … opiate withdrawal is the worst thing ever. Being really dopesick and playing a Megadeth show seems damn near impossible
I found the cassette in a bargain bin in 97. Played that cassette more than any other! So many feelings and memories come back when I play it these days (digital copies obviously!)
This might be one of the best megadeth related interviews ever. Lots of things I never knew. Also it’s so weird that Chris is the ONLY ex member to get an entire hate song written about him by Dave and yet they made peace the fastest. The song “Liar” must have gotten off Dave’s chest haha
Chris mentioned the Waters in San Pedro. Does anyone remember if that was the club that was split down the middle with 21 & over on one side, under 21 on the other?
Absolutely, I have no idea where he is coming from with that nonsense… I’ve done both way to much … I put meth down like it was a walk in the park on a nice sunny day… still can’t kick opiates… and I have tried extremely hard to get to the other side… the withdrawals are like living in the seventh circle of hell … they are ruthless…. Unlike anything else.. and words cannot describe adequately what your going through and how hard it is… only the people that have experienced it truly understand it for sure
@@dylangilbert2998Yup. During about a decade of using heroin I would do meth for a few weeks or months and just stop for a while. Did it countless times. But with the H I have only stayed off of it for more than 3 weeks 4 times. I've been on methadone now for about 5 years and haven't touched the shit for roughly 3 years now. Not sure if I'll be able to quit the methadone though. I just wish I could wake up one day and be free without any withdrawals or bullshit. I'd give anything to have my fucking freedom back
Haha “jimmy page stagger” at 1:50 is a polite way to say he was a sloppy player. But it worked for the genre and style, i really wish Chris would have stayed longer in the band.
Mustaine, at the time, had a very distinct and aggressive style. His tone was way too trebly for me but he came up with a huge number of riffs and licks (as we used to say) that were amazing and memorable. His solos were parts of the song specifically, not just a bunch of mindless playing. "The Conjuring" isn't the same without Mustaine's solo. His solo on "Good Morning" is legendary. On "Black Friday" it was that "Page" slop.

But that repetition is what gives you unit feel, makes you tight, and it's also where you work out weak parts. Great interview - love this channel. And Peace Sells is a phenomenal album.
All I can say, is we still love you Chris. You gave us some great music. I still listen to a lot of the old tracks.
I wish people would ask him about playing on The System Has Failed.
Chris Poland 🎸
Great guitarist 🎶 great interview!
Rest Easy Gar! 😇🥁
Chris is also just one of the coolest guys. Anybody fortunate enough to live in or near Southern California and have been to the Baked Potato to see OHM I'm sure can attest. No pretentiousness at all with Chris. Great guy.
I really wish this line up had stuck together
Jesus Christ, listening to him talk really brings back a wave of memories. I got started a few years later, but the results are invariably the same.
Ya, drugs are bad
@@stuartewoldt1513 Mmmkay
It breaks my heart to hear Chris talk about Gar... And his voice almost breaks every time.. They were best friends and ½ of them is gone for over 20 years now...
Great interview. Chris is probably my favorite lead guitarist of all time. So unique.
Now this guy.. knows how to give an interview. And of course, FIB knows how to conduct one. These two together are great
Agreed! He's very direct and forthright. Straight to the point. Refreshing.
The fbi knows how to manipulate the US population, thats what their good at.
Full blown honesty. Meth sounds like a monster. Glad I never did it
It is. I stuggled with from the age of 19 to 31. They say "Not even once" for a reason.
It's really fun and you can completely lock in and jam. Then at the end you're sucked up and freaking out at shadows.
@@BubbaZen10
I never could. Meth fucked my thought processes up so much that I was virtually incapable of playing. Weed, on the other hand, made me better. I will die on that fucking hill.
@@Powermad-bu4emYeah, it's different for everyone i guess. Like coke, i could never play very good on that at all.
@@BubbaZen10
I never had a problem with coke. It didn't lock my brain up like meth did. Never developed a habit for it either. Meth got me by the balls before I really knew what the hell I was doing. Made for a really fucked up 12 years.
Amazing dude there musically and personally and thank God he was able to come back from that to make even better music on his own and with other bands. There will never be another guitarist that sounds like Chris Poland so enjoy every note he plays friends.
Round 2005 or so I got an Ohm CD and it had the absolute best guitar playing I've ever heard. I don't even remember what the CD was called now, maybe it was just Ohm. Man oh man that had some good music!
Great to hear other members of Megadeth speak
Chris actually sounds like John Coltrane and Charlie Parker on Guitar.
Heroin and meth - glad to have skipped those
Any great artist must face some kind of internal conflict. The chaos creates art, once they are comfortable and fat the art goes away
Monster player with one of the most distinguishable sounds ever. The talent including Dave that has been in this band is ridiculous
Chris is from Silver Creek, NY, about 40 miles south of Buffalo, NY. I grew up about 10 miles away in Angola, NY.
He did a great job on The System Has Failed later on.
One of Megadeth's most underrated albums. Funny because that was like the big comeback record and I feel like it's since fallen into obscurity. To me, it is/was very significant.
@@hamupinhere more VERY underated albums are Endgame and Thirteen.
Imagine how different and heavier “So far, so good… so what!” would have sound if Chris and Gar were still in the band
Chris has that style of his own. He is amazing!
Drugs fu-ck you up mentally. Changes the way you think. Now I'm 49 and can now tell you that being clean is the best
Legal ones slip under the radar a lot. Crap needs to be taught in school more. We had D.A.R.E., but it needs to be more comprehensive on dopamine itself, and having speakers speak that have been through it and made it out the other side.
Chris seems like a down to Earth guy!
I know the R.I.P lineup is the best but fuck that first lineup up with The Dave's and Chris and Gar was insane so underated. Thanks for this interview this was great
You are really good at what you do. This is one of your best interviews.
Great interview. Love Chris's honesty!!
The first time I saw Megadeth was with Mike Albert on guitar opening for Exciter. The next time was in a tiny club a few months later. I’m not sure if Chris was back with them yet.
His solo stuff in Ohm is Amazing 💯🔥
Amazing interview. Gars wasn't the best looking guy and not the healthiest. But he was a trooper and one of the best drummers I've ever heard.
What does looks half to do with anything?
I know right! I mean thats why I like heavy metal, not because of the image and the music, but for the sexy band members. Seriously mate, its heavy metal, it used to be almost entirely music made by men, for men. Pretty boy looks were for the glam metal bands.
He's spot on about the misconception when it comes to drugs and music
pretty interesting that Poland was very honest and neutral about Mustaine's guitar style.
Wow brings back a lot of memories. Very very epic interview full in bloom.
his style is my favorite
Probably into Jazz then; Cuz they’d emulated both Bill Ward and Geezer from Black Sabbath infamy? Sincerely, DJP ex Anal Cunt; PostMortem and Kilslug Sony;Earache 🇬🇧 Columbia and TAANG!! Records @ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Boston Massachusetts Amerikkka of course 😮
Thanks so much Full in Bloom!
Chris is my favorite Megadeth guitarist
When I heard him talk about Gar and his passing that hit me deep. That was like his brother. Poland is a good dude and a fantastic guitarist
Met him and Dave Jr back in the day across the street from the Stone night club......both of them are gone out of the band but they where pretty down to earth guys sorry to see them out of the band because they was the line up that made that era a classic.
Love Metalopolis.
Bought it last year. Turned out to be a very fun listen.
Chris Poland has done a lot of good things in metal outside of his errors while abusing drugs… this guy is a redeemable character he’s got all kinds of great traits and a great band in OHM. Chris is a great band mate.
Peace sells by far their best album
Mustaine has talked about how their "manager" took half of the $8,000 they were paid to literally buy drugs. But he wasn't a band manager, he was a drug dealer, and Dave said that at that time they assumed all heavy metal band managers were drug dealers. What doesn't get mentioned much is that yes, they were totally ripped off but that happens when you're a full-blown drug addict. Money, like everything else becomes an afterthought. It's probably a good thing they didn't have endless amounts of money in that part of the 80's or they might all be dead now.
Love this! Thanks so much for the interview.
On set the world afire, into the lungs of hell. Poland plays a lead that hangs the last note that goes on for so long it probably would make it into the Guinness book of records.
This a groundbreaking interview 🤘🏾
I could not imagine playing a show sick.
No doubt I don’t know how the hell they managed that … opiate withdrawal is the worst thing ever. Being really dopesick and playing a Megadeth show seems damn near impossible
Imagine if drugs were not used by the bands. Many would have been huge musically.
He's got the sweetest violin like tone!!!! Amazing player & good dude!! My favorite M.D. gtrst!!!!!!!
Peeps on drugs make great music just don't abuse them and your good to go .!!!
He's totally right about KIMB. Some of those riffs are quite a workout. Fun as hell to play though.
I read an article by David Ellefson saying that he got tired of feeling hungover and sick all the time.
Return to metalopolis is the shit.
I found the cassette in a bargain bin in 97. Played that cassette more than any other! So many feelings and memories come back when I play it these days (digital copies obviously!)
Full In Bloom - probably the best interviews online.
How about talking to Brian Slagel about Hell Awaits...
This might be one of the best megadeth related interviews ever. Lots of things I never knew. Also it’s so weird that Chris is the ONLY ex member to get an entire hate song written about him by Dave and yet they made peace the fastest. The song “Liar” must have gotten off Dave’s chest haha
Fantastic interview man. Thank you Keep up the good work!!
Peace Sells is my favorite Megadeth album. #2 So Far,So Good. The rest is so,so..Just my opinion. Anyway great interview.
Favourite megadeth quitarists
Part 2 of interview soon? Thanks for this!
Chris mentioned the Waters in San Pedro. Does anyone remember if that was the club that was split down the middle with 21 & over on one side, under 21 on the other?
All drug dealers should be record producers. "Here's your eight ball, lemme get some vocal tracks."
when i played guitar for dave i remember waking up and , and still being brian pinion who can only play nirvana intros !! i need do what kurt did
Peace sells front to back is the sickest megadeth record. Period. I only like the first 3 lps. Everything else after was totally not my thing.
Sickass interview
When we getting a new 'Damn the Machine' album?
yes please
I think the new Damn the Machine album; Last Man Standing comes out Sep 9th. All unreleased tracks.
Uh I imagine Heroin is way harder to kick than Meth. They are both hardcore but only heroin is physically addictive.
I'd give anything to have my fucking freedom back
Chris Poland=Instantly identfiable.
Haha “jimmy page stagger” at 1:50 is a polite way to say he was a sloppy player.
But it worked for the genre and style, i really wish Chris would have stayed longer in the band.
He must have a hell of an ear, I never really noticed the stagger.
Bill Kennedy is a old friend and ive gotta say he mixs perfect rock n roll,he mixed killing is my bizz
Superb. Really great interview. 👍
