  • In this video I carry out a partial lawn renovation on a lawn in a shaded spot
    I carry out the following:
    Lawn scarification - multiple times using a Stihl scarifier machine
    Overseeding - using a mixed general amenity seed
    Topdressing - using multipurpose compost within my Landzie spreader.

    Well done Shaun!
    Really need to see a video of a serious thistle & dock problem!
    We built the house & moved in last year, had a landscaper lay the lawn but it froze for 2 months between April & May last year & while I’ve done everything an amateur could do to bring the grass on, the whole lawn (an acre) is absolutely ravaged with thistle. From the road it looks like the moon with craters of thistle everywhere!

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  2 роки тому

      Hi Robbie, yeah it can be a pain when things pre exist under your nice new lawn and then come through all singing and dancing! Some professional products can handle these so may be worth asking someone to spray for you with a knapsack sprayer. A little harder with domestic products but the roundup one here amzn.to/35Wsmaq is claimed to handle thistles. However it will also kill grass if any gets onto it. You might want to decant some in a bowl and use a brush to lightly brush a couple of leaves of each thistle and hope you dont get any on the lawn. You could use knapsack sprayer with a spray drift guard on and accept you'll also kill a section of lawn around each thistle then need to reseed. However I think the knapsack option would be far less laborious.. heres s thistle guide www.agrigem.co.uk/agronomist/article/how-to-control-thistles but remember commercial stuff should only be applied by a licenced operator

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  2 роки тому

      Hi.. thanks! Fence off the lawn.. or most of it to allow the renovation and a good 4 to 6 weeks after to allow the grass to establish..although even after this it's best to minimise going on it.. roots are shallow even though it looks nice on top so it wont take much to damage it again... not easy.. turf would make more sense to speed things up if I'm honest if you wills struggle to keep them off... right now my own lawn is fenced off for this reason

    • @ohmegroin
      @ohmegroin 2 роки тому

      @@LawnRight Thanks for replying. I'm looking at fencing off about a third and doing that first, I'm going to rotavate it and start from scratch. I find the ground in spots is very compact and in other places is soft - but the whole lot of it holds water (which is weird since we're on the side of a hill.) I'll probably do one third and about ten weeks later do the second third and the remainder can wait until next year, it's a split level lawn so it's not so bad. thanks again for getting back and for all the tips I've picked up.

    Hi Shaun, another great video with all the steps and great information. One of my lawns is looking in a poor state at the moment and that's after sorting out the moss, scarifying (electric), overseeding and weedol lawn treatment about 5 weeks ago. I'm planning on scarifying again tomorrow as I'd made a beginners error of using the spring tine cassette first time around 🙄, although I did also use a manual scarifier to tease out a lot of thatch. The moss has gone and it's looking weed-free at least but I seem to also have a lot of weed grasses, that silvery looking stuff in clumps, so I'm wondering if I should try a different technique? Or just heavily scarify those bits before overseeding and top dressing? I've also got a load of patches which don;t seem to want to grow, but could be a few things causing that like the heaps of birds around here or the fact I'd made another schoolboy error and used top soil instead of compost over the seeds and maybe smothered them by mistake in those places. Every day's a school day and I've gathered an arsenal of tools this year so if it doesn't work out I'm thinking complete kill-off and renovate next spring as I'd also be able to sort out those lumps and bumps too! Any advice you can offer would be evry much appreciated but I can see you're a very busy man. Keep up the great videos 🙂👍

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  Рік тому

      Can I just ask did you apply the weedol close to the seeding/Scarifying? If so it would have affected the germination rate of new seeds.. usually get any weedspraying done then give it around 4 to 6 weeks before doing anything with seeds.. so now you've done the weeds.. you should be good to do the rest again soon .. ie scarify..aerate..seed then cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil or compost.. firm inthen keep damp for a few weeks

    • @mickodonnell890
      @mickodonnell890 Рік тому

      @@LawnRight thanks for getting back to me. My 3rd attempt at seeding the same patches was 8th June and I then applied Weedol on 9th July, so just over 4 weeks, as the largest and worst patch had good growth by that point but the other smaller patches are still showing no signs, so something is up there. Heavy dew this morning stopped the scarifying today so I'll have another attempt at the weekend. I'd already aerated after the electric raking/scarifying attempt in April, but do you think it's worth doing again as I was only doing it every 6 inches or so with one of the two-pronged corer types? The weather and my work routine is now just getting in the way of making further progress at any sort of speed!

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  Рік тому +1

      Hi Steve. With it being the hottest few months I'd suggest thinking about delaying the scarifying etc till perhaps September if you are able to. • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  Рік тому

      Hi Colin.. depending on the number of humps and bumps you can fill them in with soil and then reseed. Not sure what you'll be doing on the rest of the lawn but you can scarify and aerate, potentially tislly oversees and dress those.. then fill in the dips then seed the whole thing.. or you can work with the dips bit by bit, a cm or 2 of soiling the dips.. just brush it around so it doesnt smother the grass, but rather falls down in between the grass blades.. repeat every couple of weeks.. so you would be making dips shallower bit by bit maybe 4 cm a month.. in time this will get it level. I will however water it tomorrow if no rain has fallen. Also the last few days we've had frost in the morning.

It's just more refined with almost no twigs etc. It was the same price as regular compost and delivered to my door. So in answer.. to me there no difference in how good it is..but you'll find more twigs etc in the shop bought stuff but I've happily used that for years

    Hi, thank you for your videos they’re awesome, how many m2 was this lawn for 5 bags of your regular compost? Cheers 🍻

    Do you always use compost instead of topsoil?

    • @LawnRight

      Nowadays I'd say yes most of the time. However I did used to do it with soil with equally good results. Compost just adds organic matter which helps the soil biology

      @@LawnRight thanks did the back garden two weeks ago and starting to get some germination which given the weather pretty pleased about. The top soil was full of stones unfortunately so will probably be using compost on the front

    What do you think of A1 hard wearing grass seed?

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  2 роки тому

      Hi honestly never used it. Sorry 😊 I know they have good reviews so sound slike it should be pretty good.. however nothing is indestructible against dogs and kids and shade sadly

      Can you recommend any Seed at all I can purchase via amazon or b and q etc? I was thinking about getting a big garden sieve and putting compost through it to cover my seeds when I do it? Is this a good idea

      Hi. Yes you can certainly seive it for a finer dressing.. and it is a good idea.. but in the same breath Ive literally done dozens of renovations without seiving that were fine. I created a shopping list here: lawnright.co.uk/diy/freebies/shopping-list/ that shows off the productsIm using this year on my own lawn. In my opinion for 99% of domestic lawns a typical domestic grass seed blend(amenity) is absolutely fine unless youre going for a specific look for your lawn..

      Sorry to be a pest mate. I've seen your videos last few weeks and your putting seed down. Is it warm enough for the seed to germinate if I sew seed this week and scarify etc? I've got time off finally and wondering if it'll be safe to do this weekend! Cheers buddy

      @@Lewis-te6re hi not a problem at all... I seeded mine about 4 weeks ago and most of it's already come through. You'll be fine even if we get a couple of light frosts. A deep prolonged frost would be an issue but otherwise go for it
