  • In this video, I carry out a small lawn renovation that has a considerable amount of moss down one side due to shade.
    Timestamps
    Scarifying: • Renovating a small law...
    Aerating: • Renovating a small law...
    Overseeding: • Renovating a small law...
    Topdressing: • Renovating a small law...
    Step 1: Scarifying lawn to remove moss and thatch
    To begin the renovation we have to carry out lawn scarifying.
    This is done to remove as much moss as possible along with thatch in the lawn
    Step 2: How (and why) to aerate your lawn
    Lawn aeration is one of the most overlooked procedures. Lawns require oxygen deep down around the roots to thrive.
    Lawns also become compacted each time they get used. With time this compaction increases and the lawn struggles.
    Step 3: Reseeding a moss-covered lawn
    By now you will have removed most of the moss through raking (or scarification), and aerated the lawn. The ground is now ready for seeds.
    I show you a few ways I have used to actually seed the lawn
    Step 4: Topdressing the lawn
    Topdressing is often referred to in a number of ways to mean a few things. In our renovations we say topdressing, meaning the application
    of a thin layer of organic compost on top of the seeds. This serves a few purposes. It helps protect the seeds from birds, wind and rain
    and it also helps to get some good organic goodness into the ground
    Step 5: Watering the lawn
    One of the most important steps is to water the lawn following a lawn renovation. I show you how to water your lawn for best results and what things you should avoid doing.
    Tools and materials used for a lawn renovation - mentioned and discussed in this video
    Scarifier (or using hand tools)

    Aerator (or using hand tools)

    That expensive rake looks like my £10 soil rake from The Range.
    I used it on my lawn and apart from the occasional chunk being ripped up it worked well for prepping for overseed.

    For quite a while I’ve needed to sort my lawn out, but didn’t have the knowledge or confidence that I could do it, as I’ve neglected it, apart from mowing, for a number of years. So pleased I found your video. I found your description very informative and I now feel I have the confidence to crack on even if I haven’t got all the tools you use I only have a small lawn, and you mentioned that you used to do most of this by hand! I’ll let you know how I get on. Thanks again for this very informative video

      I have just purchased everything I need to hopefully pull my lawn back from the brink…the main one being an *ldi lawn scarifier/ aerator. Slightly confused here as it doesn’t appear from the look of the blade to be much of an aerator , more of a power rake and scarifier (comes with two different blades) . I am still thinking that I need to properly aerate the lawn as I need to seed it well due to bare patches? Will manually drill holes as I do not think the machine itself will be enough for new seeding🤞

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  2 роки тому

      @@brianp7022 hi Brian, yes you're correct it's not an aerator. Several Manufacturers say they are when they aren't. If you use the thin metal spikes enough times you'll work down through the thatch layer and eventually put grooves in the soil for seed. The blades may be slitters which put deep slits in.. but try it on an inconspicuous area first! You fan always fork these spots to aerate them if needed

    • @brianp7022
      @brianp7022 2 роки тому

      Well just a quick update…my lawn was awful, only 60sqm but a whole wheelie bin full of moss 😂 the worst affected area after scarification was almost all soil as it was that bad ….has come back the lushest ! just a few stubborn patches now but I’ve got the bug now so it will be a real achievement to see the whole lawn in good shape. It’s taken two months but no real drama …only used a general sports seed and fertiliser. I have also used a liquid feed every few weeks. There appears to be some large blades of grass which I assume are couch? (Wide blades) I will rip these out as they are only small spots…
      Incidentally is there any product I could use to save my grass from dying when my dog urinates? I’ve seen products online and it’s hard to change my dogs habits😂

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  2 роки тому

      @@brianp7022 hi congrats on the achievement! Loads of watering after the dogs weed I'm afraid usually first one of the day is the strongest wee.. you can train them to use one spot takes a while but doable unfortunately

      Hi Adam thanks for the kind words... here to help. If you're just talking about watering in general say in summer then its better to water 1 to 2 times a week deeply than daily as that can lead to disease and weaker lawns.. with infrequent watering the roots have to hunt for moisture.. pushing down.. creating a stronger plant

    Super video, I've watched sooo many different ones over the years but this is by far the best in every way!! Nice to get one closer to home with a similar climate. Living across the pond here in Ireland.
    Great editing too. Even adding in the money shot, revisiting the project pinned at the top!
    The compost roller is a brilliant tool. I haven't seen one before.
    It's obvious you take great pride in your work which can be rare to find nowadays. Fancy popping over here, all expenses paid 😄
    Nice one lad, thank you for posting! Liked & Subscribed 🍻🇮🇪

    Great job - this gave me the confidence to have a go on my own gackgarden patch of grass myself (mostly moss and grass as it's never been tended to). Overall really good results, although it does look like a Swiss cheese in that there's circular shaped bare patches (not enough seed and/or top dressing I assume), so will take a other look at it in the autumn. Very hard work though, even with a (cheap) scarifier /aerator, so all credit to you for doing this day in day out 👍

    Thank you for these great videos, I am learning such alot from them. One thing I can't get my head around is if you hollow tine aerate then put grass seed down the seeds that fall down the holes will not germinate as if they are 2 inches down the hole they will not survive. Should we not be putting topdressing down the holes first then seeding?
    Would buying a lawn sweeper not be the best approach for removing the cores intact as apposed to raking or blowing them into piles. Would love to see a video on a lawn sweeper and what guy doesn't love buying new tools. Keep up the great content. 👍

    I’ve a similar lawn, neglected for 2-3yrs when house was not inhabited, with more moss than grass, been following your guide and hopefully will fix the lawn before winter comes.
    I’ve a 100sqm lawn covered with moss, wild strawberries, ferns and lots of weeds…. And some grass.

    Hi Shawn, Great video as always, I've completed a FULL lawn renovation 3 weeks ago. The new grass seed is all grown well apart from a little bit. Lots off worm casts and I'm ready for my first mow tomorrow. What's the plan from here? I have a cylinder mover.

    • @LawnRight

      Hi this was from sherriff amenity, however I always say go for any general amenity seed as most lawns are a mix of seeds so it pays to get similar. I also sometimes use hurrels seeds.. but you can also try the shelf products from b and q, tesco etc.
