Black Sabbath Albums Ranked

- It's the holiday season so here's a nice fun video talking about the grandfathers of metal: Black Sabbath. From the dumpster fire of Seventh Star, through to the 70s classics, this video covers all 19 studio albums in the general Lines In Wax style.
I haven't done a Black Sabbath complete discography retrospective because one already exists and it's absolutely brilliant:
• Metal Mythos: BLACK SA...
I think that "The Devil you Know" should be ranked. Despite of the bands name, is a more classic line-up than Martin's or Gillan era. And for sure more than Seventh Star. And better album than "13" (a souless-shity sound-generic abomination)
Tyr is such an underrated album, its personally my favorite sabbath album
Killer album. Definitely a classic, imo.
I absolutely appreciate the honesty in your opinion on Dio.
sabotage has always been my favorite mainly because of megalomania
Tyr is a bangin album. Mentalist
I was of two minds when watching this video. On the one hand, I was surprised to see the Dio albums so low because those albums changed my life. (To each their own.) On the other, I was excited to see Born Again placed so high because it is the hidden gem of the catalog.
20. Eternal Idol
19 . Headless Cross
18. Forbidden
17. Seventh Star
16. Tyr
15. Cross Purposes
14. 13
13. Never Say Die
12. The Devil You Know
11. Technical Ecstacy
10. Dehumanizer
9. Self titled
8. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
7. Volume Four
6. Born Again
5. Sabotage
4. Paranoid
3. Master of Reality
2. Heaven and Hell
1. Mob Rules
Never Day Die is probsbly top 10 lol. The song writing is often goofy but the production is excellent. It's so vivid, colourful and rich. The Dio albums are all above it but I'd take it over Technical Ecstasy which sounds limp sonically.
My top Sabbath: 1= Mob Rules, 2= Technical Ecstasy, 3= The Eternal Idol.
If you dig Dehumanizer you should check Dio's Strange Highways and Angry Machines. They're pretty much a trilogy, not the jolly power metal from the first few Dio albums
Thanks for the recommendation!
A unique, interesting ranking. I don't necessarily agree, but I respect the perspectives.
Cheers Anthony !
Since others have added their ranking, here we go. First a few small notables: I'm 68 and first heard the thunder and the bell at 14 and never looked back. Sabbath is my band and always will be. So to me, the Ozzy years are sacred (with some exceptions):
20. Forbidden - just doesn't work for me, pieced together by band members
19. Seventh Star - no balls, a few decent tunes, Glenn's vocals are great
18. Never Say Die - a handful of decent songs doesn't save the album - still trying
17. Tyr - my first Tony Martin album, better to come
16. Cross Purposes - better songs
15. Headless Cross - feels like they're trying to be evil and then the ballad
14. The Devil You Know - Like it, but I can't get through it in one listening
13. The Shining - my personal favourite Tony Martin era album
12. Black Sabbath - classic but never could appreciate the long jam
11. 13 - wanted to REALLY like this but I think Rick Rubin is partly to blame for the final result
10. Technical Ecstacy - again, a few songs just don't work for me
9. Dehumanizer - has grown on me over the years, heavy!
8. Heaven an Hell - saved Sabbath, a classic
7. Mob Rules - to me, slightly better than H&H with improved production
6. Born Again - love this album, was the Deep Purple reunion worth Gillan leaving?
5. Paranoid - played this to death
4. Master of Reality - so heavy
3. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - great mix of songs with a bit of prog
2. Sabotage - I like the anger in the songs
1. Vol.4 - has always been my #1 even though I don't need to hear Snowblind again
Thanks.
Sorry, #13 should be "The Eternal Idol"....duh!
Least favourite is 13
Underrated Gem is Born Again
Favourite is Master Of Reality
Glad to see that Born Again love! :D
Yeah, “13” is just dull.
After the train wrecks Never Say Die and Technical Ecstasy, Ozzy being fired needed to be done. The first 2 Dio Sabbath albums put new life into a dead band, without them we would not still be talking about Black Sabbath today. The fact that we got Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman makes his firing one of the best member changes any band has ever made.
Yep. Heaven and Hell is, imo, the greatest metal album ever. Nothing surpasses it.
1. Heaven and Hell

16) Devil You Know
17) Never Say Die
18) Seventh Star
19) Thirteen
Not a bad album in the bunch (although 13 is laden with heaps of filler).
Yeah I'm bailing at number 19 dude, before you even explained yourself. It's not the best, but it's DEFINITELY not Sabbath's worst album. Plus it's 20 albums anyway.
I’ll bite, what’s the 20th?
@@linesinwax4996 2009's The Devil You Know, by "Heaven & Hell", aka the Mob Rules Sabbath lineup. Not called Black Sabbath for BS legal reasons, most likely Sharon Osbourne throwing her weight around
@@linesinwax4996You know what, if you don't know this, you shouldn't be doing this ranking. H
My Sabbath Ranking

Huh, interesting that you put Seventh Star and Tyr so low, both of these are in my top 5 for the band along with Sabotage, Headless Cross, and Born Again (nice to see it in your top 5). In fact, Seventh Star is my favorite Sabbath album, at that.
If I was to do this again Tyr would be quite a bit higher now I think
What kind of Welshman are you :p, the grandfathers of Heavy metal come from tiger bay and are called Budgie. I actually find them more consistent than Sabbath.
Haha you got me on the Budgie front! Fair comment!
Forbidden, Technical Ecstacy, Never Say Die, Born Again, and 13 are the bottom 5.
I have a feeling this guy knows the spirit of Black Sabbath…even when I love Tony Martin/Hughes/Dio…but this guy talks about the thrush spirit of sabbath!
Nice list, not bad.
Truth spirit**
Thank you!
great vid. can't say I'm a fan of razorfist though. i was over a a friend's house last year, drunk, messing with that speaker alexia thing, and couldn't remember that legendary pink dots song that says "god is dead," and when i said that it played black Sabbath god is dead, and his just under one year old son stops crying, and starts bobbing his head to the opening riff. they still use that to quite him down. lol
Your goal isn't too hard to achieve. I've got every format, including 8-tracks.
Cozy started on the Dehumanizer demos, so he remained after Tyr. He was outed after a horse fell on him and broke his pelvis. Vinny joined to keep Dio happy, after Ronnie's choice of his then drummer in the Dio band, Simon Wright was vetoed by Tony and Geezer. Tony Martin was also involved due to issues with Ronnie, but ultimately the album came out with the Mob Rules line up.
I didn’t know Tony Martin was involved in Dehumanizer - be really weird to hear some of those songs with him signing on them
@@linesinwax4996 It's something I haven't heard, and I don't know if demos with Tony singing exist apart from that he did work on them, but I do know that one of the demos worked on but not used by Sabbath was given to Tony by Cozy when they were on tour together in 1992 under the name of Cozy Powell's Hammer. Martin would eventually use the demo for his song "Raising Hell" off the Scream album, re-recording the other instruments and leaving Cozy's drum track as a tribute to him.
Sorry man I totally missed your reply, thanks for clarifying everything.
Cozy’s death was such a waste, and totally avoidable. RIP to that dude, such a great drummer.
I'm glad Tony and Geezer vetoed Simon Wright. VInnie Appice is a much better drummer.
I like never say that I think it's a pretty good album
Favorites are Master of Reality, Born Again, Sabotage and Live at Last. Most underrated is DEFINITELY Never Say Die. I hear a lot of people say it’s sub par or lacking and I completely disagree. Title track, Johnny Blade, Juniors Eyes, Air dance are all killer.
Edit: I see you put Never Say Die last lol
Hahaha
Yep, sorry! I got it on CD too so I could spend a lot of time with it, in the car etc - I’m usually drawn to underdog albums even if I don’t really like them (Seventh Star is a good example), but after many many listens of Never Say Die it just does absolutely nothing for me. I’ve really tried lol
Born Again is the underdog album for me!
I did just get Live at last too, so I’ll be checking that out properly too soon
Cheers for commenting :)
@@linesinwax4996 Yea I get it I have those albums too that I don’t like or get despite others loving it. Live at Last is a great live album. I prefer it to Live Evil as I’m not a big fan of Dio singing the Ozzy songs.
How do you not include The Devil You Know? That is a sabbath album. The same lineup as Dehumanizer and Mob Rules.
Never Say Die isn't nearly that bad. Jezuz, am I gonna listen to this whole thing?
I agree about the Dio era. It's pretty good but no comparison to the early albums with Ozzy. It's more like power metal than sludgey Black Sabbath. But almost every ranking you see folks put Heaven and Hell at the top or at least in the top 2 or 3. I just don't get it.
Some people rank here at number 11
20. Headless Cross(those awful 80's synths kill it for me. Also, for a supposedly'dark' record, I feel a happy vibe from a couple of the tunes. Subtract those two tracks and dim those synths....I'd feel totally different).
19. Seventh Star(it's not bad, it just feels the least like sabbath).
18. Forbidden(not their best, but not nearly as bad as its reputation)
-
17. Cross Purposes(having Geezer present makes a difference)
16. The Devil You Know(didn't grab me immediately, it's a grower that kept getting better with each listen)
15. Never Say Die(NOT heavy, nor metal, but it's adventurous, 'outta the box' Sab.)
14. TYR(Annu Mundi 🔥)
13. 13(h I view this as a 16 song project, rather than just the 8-10).
12. Heaven & Hell(The title track is my favorite DioSab tune).
11. The Eternal Idol(very good album, overlook
10. Born Again(Ian and Tony sound phenomenal together)
9. Mob Rules
8. TekEx (being lesser than 1-6 doesn't mean it sucks)
7. Dehumanizer(my fav DioSab)
6. Sabotage
5. SBS
-5&6 neck and neck, a hair less than 1-4
4. Black Sabbath
3. MoR
2. Paranoid
1. Vol4
Heaven and hell is the best Black Sabbath album ever
My list:
Master of Reality (I worship this album)
Vol 4
Sabotage
Paranoid (I unfortunately have listend to this too much)
Black Sabbath
Heaven and Hell
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
13
Born Again
Mob Rules
Tyr
Seventh Star (I get why you and many others don't like, but I find the bluesy pop rock stuff very relaxing)
Headless Cross
Technical Ecstasy
Dehumanizer
The Eternal Idol
Cross Purposes
Never Say Die!
Forbidden (not a horrible listen, but extremely forgettable)
best to worst, Black sabbath, paranoid, master,vol4,sabbath bloody, sabotage, technical, live at last, born again, headless cross, heaven and hell, mob rules. the rest are all tied for the last except eternal idol and seventh star i don't like probably the worst two.
This HAS GOT to be THE WORST take on ranking Black Sabbath albums. I stuck around to see it all. I could write 10 paragraphs of insults but I won’t. Instead, a shout out to this chap. He genuinely believes what comes out of his own mouth. Hey, I give him that. The rankings? L-U-D-I-C-R-O-U-S. Hey, thank you for the entertainment.
Never Say Die, worst album?? Seriously??
Johnny Blade, Never Say Die, Hard Road, no its average but far superior to Ozzy era Technical Ecstasy FFS!!
Sorry buddy but had to leave you from the off..... you're slamming of Never Say Die, which starts with three pure-class tracks (the third of these being a fucking masterpiece), all unique and sounding like no other band, is way way wide of the mark. Sorry again. (And yeah, I'd be one of those who find it hard to take Sabbath without Ozzy as being Sabbath at all, though Heaven and Hell was a great album in it's own right.)
“Changes” is one of the worst songs of all time. Out of the scores of my favourite albums, it’s the only track on any of those albums I HAVE to skip, or it just ruins the whole experience of listening to the album.
The cover version of “Supernaut” by 1000 Homo DJs is great. It is probably actually better than the original. Worth checking out if you’ve not heard it.
I absolutely haven't heard that cover - cheers for the heads up!
Agreed! "Changes" is horrifically cheesy and ruins what could otherwise be a contender for greatest heavy album ever. "FX" is also a skipper, totally dated and pointless.
13 is one of the worst albums
Black Sabbath was never big into artwork
