I think the Sidechain on the V2 handles low end so much better. On V1 unless you’re using ext sidechain it kind of struggles and clamps things a bit too much. Great stuff
I use this virtual animal thru my analog Thermionic (a blend of both is lovely). Prefer the SPL a bit on the hot side, vst wise the Plugin Alliance is the winner for me. You only miss the real life iron transfo sound but I started experimenting with transformers only and got similar results ... :D Might be a good UA-cam hit
@@phable I just bought one, a great deal as an ex demo unit, almost 50% of retail price. Then I read that the V2 has what appear to be more useful sidechain EQ curves than V1. I notice in this demo you're not engaging the EQs at all for bass heavy music and it still sounds great.
@@recurvmusic Great Deal, congratulations! I was really impressed by the smoothness of the Iron. Hence, any Sidechain seemed unnecessary for my demos. But I’m considering some audio examples with the Sidechain engaged.
@@phable Yes I watched your livestream interview with the chap that has all the SPL gear and picked up on the lowered input trim tip. I’m really happy with it, just need to memorise the matrix of attack/release times that come with the rectifier options!
Finally, a hardware demo on electronic music, and not on rock drums, thank you)
You’re welcome! I’m just more interested in electronic music ;)
oh yeah that sounds sweeeeeeet
:)

Very well done demo! Thank You
Thank you Teddy!

Interesting viewpoints. The Iron is a very smooth compressor. Don‘t like to drive it that much. That’s what the Phoenix is for :)
Nice especially 3rd track
Thanks :)
If you could only have one main mix buss compressor, which would you choose?
That is impossible to answer :-D
Between your Thermionic Pheonix and SPL IRON v2, which do you think would be best for mixbus duty for modern pop stuff?
Dope 🤙🏼
;)
Hey which model external VU meter is that?
That’s an RTW meter :)
dude, what happened to your Phoenix? Why did it go?
Don’t worry! I needed space for the Iron. Phoenix is in my siderack. I love the Phoenix! Will never get rid of it :)
How do you describe it compared to Rupert Neve Diode Bridge?
Very different! Just the fact that you have a plethora of different time options plus tube biases make it very different. The Iron is very smooth!
Hi, do you prefer this over the thermionic phœnix?
Very different animals. The Phoenix is much more „aggressive“ than the Iron which is much tamer. Both excel in different categories.
Ok thanks, and if you could only keeping one for mastering ?
Is this an essential upgrade from V1 in your opinion?
Haven’t had the chance to check out the V1.

@@recurvmusic something to mention: using the input trim (minus 6 to 8 dB) creates a very relaxed open tone. Great on dynamic material.
