This sounds great but what's really a bummer for me is the no output trim.
So I'm confused.. auto-bypass switches the SPL Iron in and out of the signal path at a time interval set by the knob, so you can do A-B testing without the influence of manually switching the Iron in and out of the signal chain? edit: Well, I should've just gotten the manual... I was correct in my interpretation.. this is from the Plugin Alliance SPL Iron plug manual: "To be able to make an objective judgment of the processed material, it is best not to have to be toggling between the original and processed signals by yourself, but rather have it done automatically. Plus, the fact that you do not have to move from the sweet spot and can concentrate better on the music to optimally assess the processing is a huge advantage. The Interval control determines the time that needs to elapse before the compressor toggles between the processed and unprocessed signals. Hard left is the shortest setting. To increase the interval, turn the knob clockwise. Set to Host Sync for synchronising the Auto Bypass to your DAW. When Host Sync is on, Interval times are in BARS. When Auto Bypass is on, interval times are in seconds."
Yo your are the guy on the RME videos! Cool!!
Indeed I am ;)
People who compare the Voyager to the Model D are missing the point. It was designed as a performance synthesizer first and foremost, not a modern version of "that sound" of a Model D. If you want a particular iconic Model D sound, you're better off getting a Model D or modern clone. The Voyager touchpad is excellent and rarely commented on or demonstrated. It's very useful for expressive performances, easier to get two (or higher, depending on programming) dimensional changes with one finger, and multiple fingers can be used for even more control (tapping, spreading, etc.) The touchpad is almost like its own instrument. Voyager is also much more complex than the Model D; the stereo filters (two completely separate filters) are also often overlooked. You get two independent filters, with all their organic variations and subtle differences, in each channel. This can be further manipulated with FX and in the mix (CV panning, etc.) And the modular/CV integration is also very powerful. This synth is so much more than a bass or lead synth, which is what 90% of the videos you see of it are using it for. As for the sound, it's Moog through and through. I wouldn't say "soft"; I'd say beautifully musical, creamy, round, full, lush. There are already tons of harsh/crunchy sounding synths available (all the Arturia brutes, etc.). I love Moog's design choice in that aspect. And don't be fooled, you can get a Voyager to sound nasty if you really want it to, especially with some external FX (and who is going to run the thing completely dry anyway?). It's a sleeper for sure; all the haters have caused it to be undervalued IMNSHO. I can't think of a better sounding, more powerful normalled monosynth (i.e. not counting modulars). The Model D was a budget synth when it was in production, and it just happened to sound so good it became iconic, much like the 303 or 808. The Voyager was designed from the start to be an evolution of the Model D, better in almost every measurable way, so much more than what the original Mini had become - a lead/bass synth sitting on top of an electric piano with one sound per synth (picture Rick Wakeman with his pair, etc.) Bottom line is the Voyager is not a good clone/reissue/replacement of the Model D. It's a much better synth all around.
I bought my first Mini model D in 1978. Still have it. Amazing. I bought a Voyager around 2005 and it is also amazing. Having a programmable Mini is awesome. I then bought a new 2023 Model D reissue. Also amazing. I could never sell any of them.
ANOTHER great demo.
Such an incredible EQ! Solid State at its best! This is how I would like software eq's to sound. Without all the digital artefacts.
Doesn't sound like anything to me... 🤖
The mix definitely sounded smaller at 10db of compression regardless of the HPF settings. Unit sounds real smooth though.
VERTIGO VSC3 is the BESTTT IN THE GAME 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 We tested it against the Alpha and we really loved how each genre we tested the Vertigo has a certain release time that is just beautiful
Very good video. Compared to a lot of other videos you actually walked through and shower the capabilities. This definitely helps with my purchasing of the ssl 500 series stuff
Thanks for the excellent review! My main question is simple: if one built a 500 series with this module, what other modules (if any) would be relevant to add alongside?
A tutorial about the FM synth would be great ! It seems no one has done it so far...
Super Video, Danke 🎉 Waiting for a Mbrane Tutorial
Very vanilla how this gear is offered, really. Thus far TDs are a simplifier that saves some time when working in certain idioms. If TDs are ever going to be as ubiquitous and fundamental as comps and limiters, then they need to also be more _timbrally_ appealing. I'm surprised that there isn't already multiple models capable of of Feed-forward vs feedback, VCA vs Transformer vs Tube vs Diode types, and more emphasis placed on varying envelope shape(s) and sensitivity. Many VCA and FET comp/limiters can do similar already, and using the right combo in series and/parallel covers every dynamic base.
Thats so goooooood
Great video, thanks for putting it together. I like a de-esser on hats along with the transient designer if i want something short and clean. You're looking really well, hope you're getting some holidays and have a great new year!
Have you compared the software to the hardware? I've had the hardware sitting unhooked up for ages but just about finished rebuilding my studio so gonna hear it in action soon 😁
Im looking to get a new fx unit to use as a dj on an Allen & Heath Xone mixer, would this work on a send/return set up? To add fx to each channel on the mixer? Im new to this side of music hardware so forgive me if i sound stupid😂
Yes definitely. Just make sure you've got the right cables and you'll be good to go
Hello, can any one tell me. what the box on the right, (which can't be fully seen) is? I guess this is the source of the sounds he manipulates? I like the basic percusssion intro at 16.58, and I am wanting info on the device it was generated by. The lime yellow cable looks to connect both devices.. So what is it, another Elektron unit? He has created a nicely produced and very informative contribution to this piece of gear. Thx.
@@bunkerz5326 it’s the Waldorf iridium. I used some sounds from my production. All stuff from my DAW.
Hmm this thing is not worth $6,000+, at the end of the day it’s just a compressor, & it’s really not doing much in terms of affecting the song.
I am going to get a stereo comp for tracking and mixing. This is on my list. Did you even try the Neve 33609, so to have a comparison?
I think people tend to forget most signature sounds weren’t born from a musician thinking “this gear is exactly what I want” but rather “this is available to me” and it shaped their process so copying the gear won’t get you into their process if you just “get to the sound”
Very important point you are making here!
great video, very helpful! Thanks Phable
@@Simkidldn thank you mate :)
Waiting for delivery of my 8351B's. Upgrading from 20 year old 8030A's, which have been amazing. Last year I added Dirac Live to my setup which breathed extra life into my 8030A's by extending the bass an octave lower (at the expense of headroom that I never needed anyway). But the 8351B's arrive tomorrow and I am very excited for. Probably going to be my last, or second to last ever studio monitors, so was OK with spending AUD $13k for them!
Just as an addition, I have to say that my 8030A's are 20 years old and have never skipped a beat. Also, they have been abused, dropped, played loud as party speakers, and hammered in my studio(s). It is truly great to have some electronic equipment that truly has lasted this long without a single fault.
jurgin ? who's that please electronic beats interview
Just got this! Beastie!!!
Congratulations!
This compressor is fantastic. It is amazingly transparent. I use it as a mix compressor and I always will.
I dearly miss the VSC :-/
Is it fast enough for hip hop mix
I have always been dawless... and « Elektronless » lol The Analog Heat will soon be the first Elektron machine to integrate my setup!
Demo 5 is a film cue, brotha. Nice work!!
@@jeffjfindley4802 thanks mate!
Hi. Considering going for this one. Do you still like it? Are these stock presets, and do you know of any good patches / preset banks made by users one should check out? The examples here sounds f****** fantastic. Especially like the resochords. Reminds me of how good "pop-music" sounded in the mid 90's.
It's louder yes. But we all know the number 1 rule. Louder is better!
Always!
gem video
thanks :)
So if you don't use FX effects you can use analog distortion for example and go IN and OUT of the device 100% analog?
Yes!
Does it has the pro specs (low self noise, dynamic range etc.) for analog chain mix bus use (sending the whole mix through it) and mastering use with high end analog gear? If you would want to spice things up a little in the mid range for example?
Absolutely!
thanks for this! are you still into the phoenix? and what rack is that for the outboard + 500 series? cheers 🥂
Yes, love it to death. A new video will follow soon!
It sounds nice but there's not enough volume compensation between dry/wet in the video. Dry sounds quieter which makes it tough to really compare.
Lessons learned. Thanks for the feedback :)
If the compressor is just shortening the longer decays.. why not just decrease the decay itself ? What's the difference ? (ps: great tutorial :-))
You can think of both the compressor and decay parameters as a macro. It does more than just one thing.
This module essentially turns on a light inside the signal. It really brings out the hidden oomph in any signal.
True!
Please, make a whole studio tour!
Sure!
0:54 Yes! 😂 Hätte es total gefeiert wenn ihr knallhart mit deutschem Englischakzent weitergemacht hättet 😁
@@moss2309 😬😬😬
What a sexist hardware!
Ive been researching this piece of gear. Im afraid it may be too heavy handed and not enough control. it really dampened the high end too much in my opinion. Im using very high end studio monitors listening to this. im not sure if maybe you went overboard but I would to see a video with more subtle settings.
Thanks for the feedback! I will do another video with more subtle settings as well :)
Did you ever replace the tube on the 6176?
I sadly had to sell it :/
As someone already mentioned is the Apulsoft plugin the way to go for controlling de-essing. This here is practically just a dynamic eq (it doesn't matter if it's done by cancellation of phase inverted dry/wet) and it affects the whole range of information, not only consonants and esses.
I think I did not clarify my examples well enough. I have to do another video :)
@phable I think the main point for this device is getting rid of harshness in a musical way. Your title already points that out as well but for de-essing there are better and more detailed tools that result in a better outcome.
@@ronson795 I think you're right. Thank you so much for the input!
It's way too intense, not subtle at all
For UA-cam I mostly go for very drastic settings in oder to convey the message. I will do a follow up video with more subtle settings.
Only viable for tracking, the perfect De-esser already exist in plugin : Apulsoft (Its like manual gain but automatic, no sound involved)
Could be great for analog only chain tho
Will check it out!
I am 98-99.5% hardware only, no plug-ins, de-essers are the exception so I am interested in any potential improvements via hardware. The example with spoken word gets very muddy as soon as you turn S.Reduction clockwise. I would prefer a de-esser which is transparent, does not kill all of my highs, yet de-esses.
Agreed. Please keep in mind that I was reducing crazy amount (over 10 dB) in the beginning for drastic effects. At the end, I used the Auto Function and everything became way more transparent.
Also, you could always add more treble again, if you put an EQ afterwards. It's just a starting point to get the most aggressive sounds away :)
Nice, I am always bothered by the high frequencies out of a drum machine, this is definitely something I have to try. Thanks!
Same here! That's why de-essers are (sometimes) a godsend!
@phable can you recommend anything other to deal with that high end besides this SPL? something more affordable for hobbyists / enthusiasts? oh wait, it's 800 EUR, that's not so bad, although I would be more content with something around one third that price :)
crazy good on drums!!! will check that!!!
Do that! Love it :)
