Successful Harvard Application Essay: • Successful Harvard App...
I applied to 5 dream schools, 2 reach schools, and 1 safety school. They were as follows:
***Dream: Harvard (Accepted), Stanford (Rejected), Yale (Rejected), Columbia (Wait-listed), Brown (Accepted)
***Reach: Berkeley (Accepted), University of Southern California (Accepted)
***Safety: University of Wisconsin (Accepted).... although, looking back on it... the UW is pretty hard to get into. So this was kind of an unsafe safety.
My philosophy when applying to schools was to only apply to schools that I would love to go to. Additionally, I applied for a ton of dream schools because I figured the more I applied to, the more likely I was to get into one of them.
AP Classes I took: AP English Literature, AP US History, AP US Government, AP Calculus AB
College Courses: Multivariable Calculus at Otterbein University, STEM classes at Ohio State University
Extra Classes: 3 years Spanish, 3 years Painting
*Oh! And I went to a public school in suburban Ohio! (That seems important to mention.)
    GPA: 4.0 (unweighted), 4.7 (weighted)
ACT: 33 (normal), 34 (super score)
SAT: 2040 (can't remember individual breakdowns)
*I also took 2 SAT subject tests, but I can't remember which they were and what I got on them.
Extracurriculars: track (4 years), tennis (3 years), soccer (1 year high school, 10 years total), National Honors Society (2 years?), Ski Club (2 years)

People listen you don't need to have the biggest and shiniest scroll to give to a Ivy league school. My sister went to a regular high school got a 3.8 gpa, 2100 sat, 30 act after that she attended a community college. she graduated with a 4.0 and a 2 year degree. She got offers from Columbia, Dartmouth, and Princeton. She chose Columbia. What im saying is that you don't need to feel like you need to take what this girl did.
    Good luck

Exactly! I had a 3.1 in high school, 32 act, and decided to go to community because I had no idea of my chances at my dream schools (Sarah Lawrence, MIT, and Barnard). I just graduated from community with a 3.3 (still an improvement) and am transferring to/moving into Sarah Lawrence next week! They gave me $10k a year in scholarship for being a community college graduate. I always tell people that community college was one of the best decisions I have *ever* made and they should seriously consider it.

This gives me so much hope. College confidential would have you thinking that you're an idiot with no shot at HYPMS type schools without at least 34 ACT/2300 SAT and 4.0 gpa coupled with national awards. You are an example that it's really about the person in the admissions process and not just stats ❤️

She's a great example of someone who wasn't unattainably perfect yet she still got into an amazing school because they also saw her as a person and not just as her test scores , not to say her test scores are bad or anything. Also, some stuff on college confidential could be a real blow to ones self esteem so try not to let it get to your head too much

Could you please do a video on how to balance getting straight A's while also doing sports? I've always been a straight A student, but I find it quite difficult at times to balance the two especially now that I'm taking AP classes. My top priority is still to focus on my academics; however, I do not want to have to quit playing the sport I love which is basketball. We have practice everyday for 2-3 hours, and I am also taking multiple AP classes as well. Anyways, I find your videos very motivational and helpful! I really hope you do a video on this request for the upcoming school year. You're amazing, and you continue to inspire so many people!! I just want to thank you for all your genuine efforts to help us in anyway you can! :)

      @HardCoreCAGaming 7 років тому +43

Frank Zhang if you watched her video reading her supplemental essay to harvard you'd realize it was hardly anything but luck. She IS exceptional, and her ability to express so in her writing is what got her in, hater.

    • @frankzhang7529

+HardCoreCAGaming If you understand anything about the admissions process to top universities, you'd know it is luck. I'm not saying that she isn't talented. But top schools choose off of fit, not merit. No advice she gives is gonna do jack shit to getting someone in if they already are completely qualified.

Guys, not everyone with sky-high GPAs and insane extracurriculars and near impossible courseloads gets into the Ivy Leagues.
I was a private high school student in Canada. I had a 3.8/3.9 GPA from Gr 8-12 (4.8 inflated), took more than 4 Honours courses overall, was student council treasury, and constantly volunteered. I also found out that I had almost become valedictorian (a few Board teachers told me that my draft valedictorian speech made the final round; the person who won over me was the ONLY final competitor). I graduated with Honours and received a $1000 Ministry of Education scholarship but that still wasn't enough.

Good thing you stuck with the math, I did really good at math in grade school through high school, I would have finished computer math my junior year and gone on to the university math my senior year but I ended up attending 4 high schools and just dropped out my junior year, I didn't use math for years and lost all I learned just about atleast from Algebra up by the time I was 30 I did not have my math skills anymore, I spent time reading lots of math books from the library but it wasnt working because I wasnt doing the problems in the books. I tried to come up with my own math since I didn't remember the normal math, it helped but not something to teach to others. I have read over 2000 books to try and make up for the fact I dropped out of high school it helped but still needed the formal disciplines to apply anything. I went into the Army it helped me learn how a human can be a violent robot or think like a killing machine but I got out and I went to junior college had a bunch of hippie teachers with long hair and coudnt even want to learn from them , I took flight technology got A's in aviation science and my ground school classes did good at science stuff, A in intro to sustainability , intro to technology, aerodynamics, ect. However I had a hard time with my math teachers , I have taken some fake IQtests for logical reasoning online not real ones but they said I had a logical reasoning IQ score in several categories from 170 to 200 on one logical patterns. It was 2 in the morning and I just got off work so I am sure I get a better score with sleep and taking it in the morning or afternoon , atleast a fake one. Yet still I could not learn from these junior college teachers, watch out for community college. I finally got to the university I am over 40 now but I am finally a junior at western governors university. I have been skipping my algebra course each term I don't know why but it's now do or die, I have been doing open courses on youtube watching Harvard psychology course lectures and Yale history and finance courses. I started watching a MIT computer programming course but so busy. Well I have a computer program to develop for estate management and had it checked out by a professor at the community college who graduate from MIT in the 60's he said good program will sell. I am a marketing student and nearly through, got my life insurance license and can finally , finally earn a living.
