Ive been painting for almost 10 years now and still learned a thing or two from this. Never knew to paint away from recesses or dabbing the brush when edge highlighting for better control. I too in the last few years totally did not purchase an airbrush and absolutely preffer using a rattle can that has less control and maybe base coats fourty models before running out on a good day.
"Away painting" specifically was always hounded in the metal days because it would easily paint over a detail or gather at the edges and fill. That assumes the mini wasn't textured oddly or had any molding flaws like micro pits. I just got back in after taking a break for about your time in the hobby. I love that it never stops growing and evolving and we never stop gaining skills and ideas.

Great work Jon!
This is a great video. As a moron who once put in an insane amount of time blending the hell out of the visor on an Eldar grav tank’s pilot, just to glue the canopy shut and sell the completed model to a bigger moron on Ebay for three times the MSRP at the time, I have been rolling my eyes at GW’s painting advice for years and deeply appreciate this hilarious take on it.
Just wanted to say - as a complete pleb who isn't very familiar with with the GW painting videos, I occasionally struggled to pick out what was real advice and what was a dig, so thank you for pushing the satire to 11 to help me and my fellow idiots follow along without straining our handful of braincells too much. Quality content as always.
I love any video that mentions WET BLENDING which is my main technique and allows you to get your mini's done much more quickly with a decent quality although I need to work on the edge lining now. Thanks ninjon!
Awesome video concept idea my dude! Very entertaining, and as always a stellar paint job.
Your wet blending gave me back hope in the universe. I feel ready to paint another eldar blades batch.
I see your misdirect in the beginning Jon, clearly the secret to being the best painter possible is to paint in the inky abyss and listen to the voices. Dont try to fool us.
In all seriousness I feel like every time I watch one of your videos I walk away wanting to practice these skills with more confidence
You hear the voices too, brother?
@@Fifthmiracle Only when painting in the inky abyss, but yes
Another banger. Thanks for the wet blending clip. And the tip about blending shades.
This was an absolutely amazing video! Thank you for the good laughs Jon. GW needs more shade thrown its way, no pun intended. We need better and more in depth videos. Maybe videos actually made by the Eavy Metal team? Nah, I'll just rely on you and other content creators to keep doing it here every time.
Jokes aside there's a couple of former 'Eavy Metal painters on YT. Infernal Brush for example. You can find some more in insta I think. Also Darren Lathams old videos are also reuploaded on UA-cam, he's also on the EM team and did a solid series on some in-depth tutorials.
GW make their videos for their target market: 12 year olds.
And they are great tutorials for young kids starting out.
that wetblending on the sword was better than watching a whole video on wetblending. straight to the point. thanks Jon
"This is funny, by the way. I get it."
Hahhaa, solid video! On a sidenote I recently bought my first AK paints, and immediately was blown away. Went out and bought more right away. Likely won't buy citadel layers or bases again, which for me is a pretty big deal. Citadel is the last way in which I financial support GW. Or I mean... was.
But... what about washes tho? 😉
@@bartekwwa Can't say for Brad, but after the recent price hike/ formula change with washes I won't be going to them for washes either...which is too bad as I liked Agrax/Reikland
@@bartekwwa Army painter washes are pretty solid. Also with the right mediums you can make your own washes quite easily, just takes a bit of trial and error to get the formula sorted.
Haha! The transition visual and sound was about spot on! 🤣
It’s a remake of a special character from the old world friend 😁 this is the newest rendition of the model that’s what I really miss from the before times the detailed stories of all the special characters
Absolutely LOVE the humour - best GW style paint tutorial!!
A lack of a British accent is disturbing
True, but I picture John as a cockney
Too americanisch
English accent mate
No, the lack of a paint transition is disturbing
I came here to say this, hah!
Very good! Loved the dramatic music, certainly added whole conception of the miniature…
Ok, I enjoyed this video a ton. You're script, timing and delivery hits it every time. (Did that sound highbrow enough?)
Thanks! I love your videos and have oicked up several new techniques thanks to your no BS instructionals.
Im curious to ask, how long did it actually take you overall? The final result is very GW-basic which is great but you can still see some of the real work behind it.
This video, explicitly, earned my sub. These are amazing tips.
I'm sure every gw painter does it, yknow, using thousand sons blue in an aquatic blue bottle...
They actually do use Thousand’s Son’s Blue for their thousand son’s, then again, with how good AK coverage is, maybe they shouldn’t lol
@@Vin_Venture896 They could do with some Metal Color metallics too, the GW ones are way too grainy-looking. A lot of them were a pain to work with too, last I remember.
@@nicholassinnett2958 I cannot confirm nor deny that Vallejo metal color dark aluminium may or may not be used as a replacement for boltgun metal.
It's funny how to me, someone that doesn't do miniature painting, all his videos just explain the same things (or at least seem to). YET I keep clicking on them when I see them on my feed as I just love him talking about all the wild things on the side lmao
This was an hilarious, entertaining tutorial with actually useful information!
Wow, what a smart ass! Lol. You and Scott are really doing your best to make sure games workshop loves you. Lol
Destruction Level 100
What a coincidence! I accidentally found the exact paint bottles here in Germany.
Seems someone spilled these all over the globe!
Great vid btw. And why the hell doesn't GW sell wet palettes yet? Or rebranded airbrushs?
I'm pretty sure that these would sell like their other overpriced bs...like GW brushes.
Some of them are double the price of Winsor&Newton/Artist Opus/Raphael/etc equivalent...like...the fuck?
Or the miniature priming holder.^^
7:27 I both laughed and felt that harder than I should have.
And those timestamps lol.
Great work man, I'd hire you.
Finally, someone called it out. A true service. Thanks man.
“Transfer some in to the bottle of another company’s” - that was hilarious!
Great video!)
This video was just great. The most effective video is definitely that which blends humor with education.
I had some true laugh out loud moments with this one.
I've seen plenty of examples of wet blending but I feel this one is my favorite. Very clear shot that shows how ultimately simple it is and a great result that showcases how effective it can be.
That wet blending music is so fitting. It was a light bulb turning on type epiphany for me.
This video was both hilarious and fresh. love the tongue n cheek sarcasm.
Love it. I feel like your sense of humor is pretty on point Jon.
Amazing. That is the quickest and simplest tutorial of wet blending I ever seen. You constantly teach me in an entertaining way. Thank you so much Jon!
Loved this video. Good laugh and great example of how its done.
Wish more out there would be more tongue in cheek this way. Really enjoyed.
I found a pile of paints from ~20 years ago in my storage. The GW ones, of course, were rock hard (probably within a couple months) in their pots. The Vallejo paints in their bottles were still liquid. Not that I would trust a paint after that long, but it definitely illustrates the difference!
Jon, you SLAYED me with those "subtle" digs at the beginning.
I actually paid attention to your condescending tips more than any other painting tutorial, I learned things I never thought of before and I have been in the hobby for over 20 years, lol
Loved this! Plus I've learned about wet blending! Nice one!
Thanks for a truly great tutorial!
I'm super new to painting minis (about 6 months), and I've been struggling a bit with the painting (mainly shadows and highlights). You made it so much clearer than any other video I've watched so far. This should be the norm in my opinion.
Lol. I didn't think I was possible, however you made a GW tutorial fun and useful. Bravo bravo
Honestly one of the best (mix of entertaining me and teaching me) painting videos I have seen.
I’ve never seen one of their tutorials…but seeing your excellent audition, I kinda get the idea! 🤣
amazing video and thank you for the wet blending examples, those were super helpful
A combo of amazing comedic delivery and a great tutorial. God damn mate
This video was such a delicious mixture of helpful info and salt. Fantastic.
That wet blend is *awesome*!! Thank you for actually showing the process, I haven’t seen it done before like that. But then again I’m just starting to watch painting tutorials too, lol. But you took something that was a difficult concept to visualize when having it described and showed how easy it really is. Thank you!!
This video is awesome as usual. The information is great especially for people like me who don't have continuous time for their hobby and often look at the basics from the front. Thanks for the joy of making videos and the great content. Keep up the good work!
Had a nice chuckle over this. Well done, I would give you the job.
This was just the laugh I needed after a rough day. I especially loved the parody of conveying all the emotional range of a plywood cutout.
Well gosh golly, this man took one of them citadel paintin tutorials and made it sound useful and informative. I mean, who would have thought?
Brilliant video format, perfect mix of sarcasm and serious commentary.
