I've landed in Milford Sound in real life (I did it as part of CPL mountain flying training with the now-defunct Wakatipu Aero Club) and MSFS2020 is easily the most realistic. It's on the Western (and very wet) side of the South Island, and so a lot of vegetation/moss grows on sheer cliff faces. Because of the humid weather there's often cloud cover making the atmosphere look grey-ish and murky, but if there are no clouds MSFS2020 would look by far the most realistic, with the exception of the stretched cliffside textures. The oversaturation is exactly correct, it's very lush out there if the sun shines on a cloudless day, whereas with MSFS2024 it looks washed out, as if the screen brightness was cranked too high. Also the trees in MSFS2024 are completely incorrect, but in MSFS2020 they got the NZ-specific world update with the correct trees and low bushes. There are plenty of UA-cam videos for the real Milford Sound, take a look and you'll see what I mean.
The colors and cliffs look way better in 24 overall to me. 2020 is just overwhelmingly an oversaturated green to me. Also, I had the chance to fly in the Midwest US during the alpha and what they have done with farm fields is super compared to the grainy satellite imagery from before
That was a great comparison. Keep at it. Practice makes perfect . I am pleased how much more natural the lighting looks in 2024. 2 weeks to go ! (Hopefully)
Very interesting to see the side by side. Given that the alpha release of MSFS 2024 hasn't got the competed scenery yet, I was more interested in the smoothness of the flight and 2024 looked pretty good. Perhaps in future videos you could inject a little wind and weather into the equation. One of the things I find quite exciting in 2024 is the depiction of seasons. I have tried a third party addon for seasonal changes in 2020 but it was a fps hog and flying was like watching a slideshow lol. Thanks for the video.
Hard to compare a finished & maxed out 2020 with a new improved w2024 at this point. I think that based on Asobos track record, we should have fairly high expectations with the usual growing pains. Even if they were close to same, which the're not, we still have much faster loading times, less storage being taken up, win 11 H24, multithreading & we have years where I have no doubt that Asobo & MS will keep improving on the sim. Remember FSX ? 😉
This airport (NZMF) is a fantastic place to go glider flying in MSFS 2020, LOWZ being another. If you haven’t tried gliding in the mountains you should try it. Very different experience compared to flying a GA plane in the same locations.
Oh, if only someone (hint hint) could fly a helicopter over Fulham, London and do some aerial footage over the streets near the football ground. Great videos btw, many thanks.
the terrain colours in 2024 are so wrong which is really weird. Even if you load up bing maps the colors in Milford sound are way more accurate. I am excited around 2024 but they need to get some consistency and realism in texture color toning. Im sure all of this will just be semantics in the end though. Milford airport has mostly small trees and shrubs surrounding it. 2020 gets the representation much better than 2024.
2024 'looks' better, but is actually very inferior to 2020. 2020 is about 80% like real life, but needs some reduction on the green tint. Also, the topography in 2024 is really messed up. The mountains look 'squat' and far away, when in reality they are towering all around the airport. 2020 is much better!
@@Sergeant898 This is why comparing a finished product with a very unfinished tech alpha is not a good idea, it's not a representation of the final product, and it gives people the wrong idea.
2020 looks more accurate and has correct tree types. 2024 is still a work in progress so I wouldn’t expect it to be up with 2020. I assume 2020 gets transferred over any way? I double checked photos via Google. 2024 trees look like Aussie gum trees which is incorrect btw. Also the chap who does 16:9 cinematic videos/films with 2020 has a video on how he makes them and notes in the graphics section the washed out scenery colours and shows how he increases some settings to look more natural. Sorry cant recall his channel name at the moment. Laurie NZ. 😊
Fyi Milford Sound has 7m (22.96 feet) average rainfall each year hence the type of trees shown accurately in 2020. It is apparently one of the wetest places on Earth. Lol lucky you got a sunny day! 😅. Laurie. NZ 😊
The main problem is internet connection... this is all moot if the extant issues with lost connections continues... especially given that it is even more important in 2024.
Very true however internet has gotten a lot more reliable. I am more concerned for those who do not have unlimited internet. I know several of my friends in the USA that have data caps and this will make streaming more of the sim restrictive for them
Checked on native trees in the area, so 2020 on the second airfield looks correct as they get to 30 plus m tall and 50 plus m tall up around 300 years old. Laurie. NZ. 😊
Yes it sure is , however we can see what we have now just starting out compared to a sim they have been working on it for 4 ish years and realize that after sometime MSFS 2024 will be just that more great
Checked photos of the second field, trees have been cleared on approach like 2024 but its a grass strip, no money here for a sealed/concreted strip out in the backcountry. So 2020 is more accurate. Btw there is another strip West of Milford airfield up a valley near a rather nice looking camping lodge. That would be a challenge to get into I think. Thanks. Laurie. NZ. 😊
@@streamgamerz6542 Hi its Quintin Lodge. Google Maps plus code 4V796Q53+95. I can see a long strip that at least helicopters could land on? Its on the Milford Track.
I don't know why, but the reflection in the water is always so intense in simulators. In real life, the surface doesn't reflect that much, unless it was a completely still water surface without any breeze.
It looks like the windshield is UV damaged and needs to be replaced on the 2024 scenery. The 2020 version looks like a brand new windshield was just installed. I used to install new ones as an A&P, I.A. I'm not in favor of MS including scratches and smudges as part of the realism. I am here for the scenery, mostly.
I see, i was thinking i was going to do the same but since i did the alpha it changed my mind and re ordered MSFS 2024. I do respect everyone's decision.
So far i would say good. I will say i did have a learning curve mostly as my controllers are set a certain way in MSFS 2020 and i am use to them that way. In MSFS 2024 they are set default
It's a long time since I went to Milford sound, but I watched this thinking that surely you have the labels mixed up? The trees on the left look very wrong. From another country. Also the mountains look too far away and the bushline very low. Keep in mind that Milford Sound starts at sea level and it's a temperate climate. While there's certainly issues on the right-hand side, it looks far more like Fiordland. Flying into Martins Bay looks okay on the left, but the right still feels more New Zealand.
nope the videos are not mixed up. i was very impressed seeing the side by side of the 2 how good the msfs 2020 looks. i having not been to Milford sound and seeing the trees on MSFS 2020 i thought they looked very good as well. Looking at the mountains it seems weird that the tree line would as high up as they are in msfs 2020. i have been to the Rocky Mountains several times and there at least the trees do not go that high up. however its possibly different in NZ
You have nade a comparison with the payware Milford Sound expansion of NZA on. Despite this MSFS 2024 is much better, look even at haze that now is easily visible and those tree .... they look really like real.
I hear that. i can only say that was what i thought as well. In fact i told my friend i was not going to upgrades how my better can the sim be. but since i used the new sim the better performance and no studders made me pre order

Is 2024 really 50 gb?? How did the size drop from 150 gb to 50 gb?
Since more Data is now being streamed from the cloud when needed in game, not as many files and Data needs to be pre downloaded to the pc.
Great question, the Alpha was 9GIG to Download. Mostly it because a lot of it is streamed to us via cloud
How are the flight models in the alpha?
