So Erick, how does it feel to be the UA-cam classic console JRPG king? Because you are! I dunno about anyone else, but you're always at the top of MY searches! Congrats, brother! Your love of the genre shines through!
10. Lunar Star Silver Story Complete 9. Final Fantasy IX 8. Chrono Cross 7. Star Ocean 2 6. Grandia 5. Breath of Fire III 4. Vandal Hearts 3. Vagrant Story 2. Final Fantasy 7 1. Suikoden 2 damn this is tough... need to redo that list already 🤣
There is more then 10 games, that needs to be stuffed into the top 10.Like Legend of Dragoon,Breath of Fire 4,FF8 wasnt bad either,Persona 2:Eternal Punishment and probably a few others, but atm my brain doesnt work all that well to remember them, since its still 5am. :D There was Vandal Hearts 2 too. :]
Most of the time these commentaries drive me insane and I just want to see gameplay BUT I had to comment on this special one and say the fact that you touched on the emotional and philosophical aspects of the games and how they make you feel as well as the other things rather than just strictly gameplay aspects was really appreciated. I love and miss being a kid and being easily immersed in these games and it’s nice to know other people feel the same way about their favorite games as well; that it was more than just controlling a character and completing missions or maps or dungeons, it was about an entire journey and adventure and leaving you with stuff to think about in life. I miss all that so much. The most recent release I’ve found that in is Ys: Lacrimosa of Dana for PS4. I loved every moment of that game and felt like they went back to the old style of storylines and characters and it just meant so much to me. Anyway, enough of my long winded rambling, your commentary and thoughts were awesome man :)
This channel has inspired me to pick up the most beloved and sometimes forgotten classic jrpgs of the ps1 and 2 era!!! Gotta catchem all before they are no longer physically available for the retro collector!!! The prices keep going up!!!
Nice list! So many good JRPGs in PS1, for sure my favorite console of all time in terms of a JRPG lineup. We have some same picks but in slightly different order. My personal top 10 would be: 10. The Legend of Dragoon, A very good game with a unique battle system and very cool characters. 9. Breath of Fire 4, The best looking PS1 JRPG in my opinion and a very good game in general. 8. Final Fantasy 7, The King that helped popularize JRPGs in the west. 7. Vagrant Story, Very very unique game with amazing writing and innovative battle mechanics. 6. Suikoden 2, The best in the series with a great cast of characters and very good storytelling. 5. Final Fantasy 9, The best mainline FF game. 4. Grandia, The best battle system in a PS1 JRPG paired with a colorful and beautiful art style. 3. Valkyrie Profile, Simply amazing!!! Great characters and story, nice battle system. 2. Final Fantasy Tactics, If one Final Fantasy deserves to be here that is Tactics ( but I still put 3 :P). The best FF game ever. 1. Xenogears, A true masterpiece. My favorite game of all time and it isn't even close. It blew my mind back in the day when I first played it as an unsuspecting 12 years old boy.
10) Digimon World 3 9) Front Mission : 3 8) Tales of Destiny, 7) Chrono Cross, 6)Legend of the Dragoon, 5) Star Ocean : 2nd Story, 4) Breath of Fire IV, 3) Final Fantasy : Tactics 2) Final Fantasy IX, 1) Suikoden 2
Thank youm I wish I could have added Xenogears but I haven't played the game, also I didn't finish Valkyrie Profile through ragnarok so I can't vouch for it as well.
1 - Castlevania SON 2 - Digimon world 1 3 - Star Ocean 2 4 - Tales of Destiny 2 5 - FF9 6 - Suikoden 2 7 - Grandia 8 - Chrono Cross 9 - Suikoden (should be higher but the Graphics ......well) 10 - All RPGs on ps1 were amazing a time long past.
Woow!! I have just discovered your videos but this is the first time I found someone who praises Xenogears, Suikoden and Final Fantasy IX! Your choices are very very good! I also love Wild Arms (I played only the first) and Chrono Chross.
I mostly agree with it, although i would replace vandal hearts with final fantasy tactics, kartia with legend of legaia and suikoden 1 with vagrant story. Also SO2 has a bit more exclusives in their routes besides the obvious implications of a change of point of view character. Namely Leon and Dias being exclusive each to one of the main characters
Ah Chrono Cross... My equivalent, as in the game that introduced me to RPGs and made me an addict would be final fantasy IV (well, II according to the box back then!) . Great list! Though I would've sacrificed suikoden 1 since u added 2 to make room for other unique PS1 gems such as Parasite Eve or Threads of Fate or breath of fire 3.
A very solid list; I agree with most of it esp. chrono cross being the top and choosing ff9 instead of the rest. However, instead of the srpgs and action RPG you included I would choose legend of legaia, legend of dragoon, breath of fire 3 and maybe 4 and Koudelka
Nice list very unique and now for my bland vanilla top ten no fan translations 10 Tactics Ogre Let's Cling Together Underrated masterpiece 9 Tales of Destiny Cliched story, poorly aged combat,1 dimensional but fun characters and very charming 8 Parasite Eve Great music and intriguing plot 7 Breath of Fire IV Second to Legend of Mana and SaGa Frontier II when it comes to 2d PS1 games 6 The Legend of Dragoon I'm still signing petitions for a sequel to this day 5 Grandia Best turned based battle system 4 Chrono Cross Better than Trigger. Catch me outside how about dat. 3 Final Fantasy VIII My first RPG ever my only experience with video game storytelling was Spyro and I jaws was on the floor with the opening FMV. Also Zell is husbando. 2 Final Fantasy IX If Jeopardy had the question what is a JRPG? Final Fantasy IX is the correct response. Honourable mentions Valkrie Profile, Breath of Fire III, Dragon Quest VII and Tales of Eternia are on different lists. 1 Final Fantasy VII Because I'm basic garbage, sue me lol. Aerith is best girl.
i played 5 of your list my most favevorite to those are both tactics ogre and legend of dragoon and the other 3 is valkyrie profile, breath of fire not sure what series it was and final fantasy 9 those 3 is also great, now i cant wait for divinity original sin 2 and dragon quest 11 i'm both new to the series but i'm quite sure i will like them both
Suikoden 2, as it implies 2nd, is my second best rpg. Chrono cross is my number 1. I can see why Suikoden 2 is also great. Soundtracks great, and storyline as well. Longer game play and unique mobs and bosses.
I am in the middle of Final Fantasy 9 and it’s amazing, definitely the best Final Fantasy. I’m also in the middle of Chrono Cross, Epic! Now I just started playing Legend of Dragoon and Legend of Mana, the PS store is closing 😱
I'm only just getting into JRPGs and I love your videos! They're very cool and educational for someone like me who is a beginner. Unfortunately I haven't played enough on the PS1 for that to be my only list of JRPGs, here is what I have played and enjoyed. No particular order. 1. Phantasy Star 2 2. Cosmic Star Heroine 3. Final Fantasy 5 (an odd choice maybe, but I loved it) 4. Ys Origins 5. Grandia 6. Final Fantasy 9 7. Lost Sphear (I don't think it rated very highly, but I just loved it and the characters.) 8. Breath of Fire 3 9. Dragon Quest 5 (incredible Story) 10. Final Fantasy 4 Please understand, my list is a bit weird, but I am new to JRPGs and didn't play them back in the day. This is some of what I've enjoyed the most since I started playing JRPGs.
Don't worry, man, it's cool, those are all great games, as a matter of fact. But just so you know, Cosmic Star Heroine is not Japanese, it's from the US. Thanks for sharing!
back when I was just a kid, I fell in love with chrono cross, I played it for hours consecutively, but sadly when I reached disc 2, my 2nd disc isn't working, there's no more game store selling this game, and online selling isn't a thing back then.. so time passed, year 2019, I decided to go on a mission to play all my childhood games, I downloaded an emulator on my android, and the first game I played is this Chrono cross, Now my childhood will haunt me no more.
@@treasurehunter3369 It turned out great, I've played tons of games on psx emulator, then I switched to GBA emulator and also played tons of games on it, now I'm busy playing games from Nintendo DS
@@espada8527 ds is perfect for android emulation! Not only is touch built in, but the hardware/bios runs really great on android for some reason (optimization?) Finish cross?
@@treasurehunter3369 True! I finish almost 30 games on DS emulator, its perfect, but for some reason my phone isnt compatible with golden sun, it lags a lot, now I'm playing "the world ends with you". About Chrono cross, yes, the truth is , its the first game I've beaten using my trusty old phone and emulator.
The ps1 jrpg library is pretty insane. I am still trying to make my way through it now. I'm playing FF8 now. Will have to go back and finish Vandal Hearts once I beat FF8. My backlog is crazy. Still need to play FF9, Chrono Cross, Valk Profile and many others.
im sure my backlog is 3 times more lot than yours lol. i want to play so many rpgs on many emulators but school tasks and exams limiting my time to play any DX
These are my PERSONAL favorite RPGs in ps1/psx: 10. Legend Of Dragoon 9. Grandia 8. Lunar Silver Star Story Complete 7. Final Fantasy 8 6. Final Fantasy 6 5. Xenogears 4. Final Fantasy 4 3. Wild Arms 2 2. Final Fantasy 9 1. Suikoden 2
I've always enjoyed seeing your NIN shirts or fingerless black gloves as they seemed to suggest you were a man of culture. Tobacco sunburst strat solidifies this feeling, knew you were top shelf quality ;)
This is a great video. I enjoyed every one of the games you placed on the list, and I appreciate the fact that you really seem to love the genre. Also, the fact that Kartia actually gets some attention is good. Anyway, keep up the excellent work man. You have a good channel.
6. Parasite Eve 5. Xenogears 4. Chrono Cross 3. Final Fantasy IX 2. Final Fantasy VIII 1. Final Fantasy VII I respect your list. I haven't played that many PS1 JRPGs so I only have six on mine. The way you feel about Chrono Cross is the way I feel about my beloved Final Fantasy VII. My first RPG and my first Final Fantasy ever, the memories I have from it are precious and no other (J)RPG makes me feel that way. In fact, I am replaying it right now.
Making a top 10 for PS1 is SOOO hard, and I don't know if I should have Castlevania SOTN on it, but it has some RPG elements in it... I leave it out for now. 1. Xenogears (Just the best game ever, period) 2. Valkyrie Profile (Just the second best game ever, period) 3. Grandia (this game is all about nostalgia for me, one of the first JRPG:s i played and finished) 4. Suikoden II (The best of this series, just wonderful) 5. Final Fantasy VII (my first JRPG
Yes, it was so freaking hard, especially choosing the order. I still feel weird having put Xenogears on the sixth place, but in terms of gameplay, I prefer the other 5 by far.
I never played Xenogears. Legend of Mana deserves more credit... its not like Secret of Mana is untouchably perfect... in its own right Legend is freaking awesome compared to SoM or ANY game
Trying to make a top 10 for the Playstation is impossible for me there is so so many great games that deserve to be in the top 10. Like not having Grandia or Lunar in that top 10 would hurt me I don't know how you did it lol. I got into RPG's before the Playstation era but it is the time that made me a addict that's for sure. Ive liked a lot of RPGs since then but all my greatest memories come from that time and so many of those games aged extremely well. I have to say Xenogears is one of the few that didn't age as well, the battle system that I loved the first time around became a huge pain in the ass about mid way through the game when I tried to replay it haha. Its still an a amazing game just unlike other PS1 games its a hard one to replay at least for me. Did you make Tim the focus of the WIld Arms 2 video just to spite me?!?! He is like the only character that I feel doesn't deserve to be there and is more of just Mcguffin then anything else. If you did kudos to you sir cause it made me cringe lol, if not that's a hell of coincidence cause I got into a discussion about him with someone on your what the hell happened to Wild Arms video.
A friend of mine gave me permission to use the WA2 gameplay, since I don't own the game, so Tim in there was his idea, hahahaha. And yeah, making top 10s of the best, is really, really tough, I had a hard time chosing the order of this list.
Fricken Tim lol, you have all these characters forged to do battle with some kind of training and then the trap that has mystical powers because he was birthed from the right vagina Tim! But I can believe it would be hard to do a top 10 I would have about 8 games in first at least on the PS1 because I love them for completely different reasons.
I posted this somewhere else before, but i might as well share these list i made. Some may have not known some of these, so it would be great if other jrpg lovers who haven't discover some of these gets the chance! •Some Strategy jRPGs Vanguard Bandits - beautiful mecha 2d sprite w/ solid combat, doesnt feel clunky Brigandine: Grand Edition - one of my favourite strategy, hex based and delicious progression, you can evolve summon units or change classes of heroes Arc the Lad - unique playstyle and sprite looks great Kartia - very nice summoning concept, nice sprite, interesting story, and delicious art Final Fantasy Tactics - its final fantasy tactics Langrisser - great srpg similar to fire emblem Front Mission - delicious mecha srpg w/ great story Vandal hearts - Satiate your hunger for gore +srpg • Some jRPGs/action jRPGs--------- Rhapsody - Beautiful sprite w/ great tactical turn base combat Jade Cocoon - Amazing atmosphere, story and combat. Vagrant Story - Gameplay is ahead of its time! ! ! 10/10 would play again Thousand Arms - great humor, has voice over dialogue, some dating elements too Lunar - One of the best classic, has great character art and dialogue Star Ocean - sci-fi + fantasy jrpg, great combat as it is real time Grandia - Feena best girl, very jrpg, at times unexpected things happen, great memorable adventure too, and unique combat system (there is a Japanese voice patch somewhere too) Threads of Fate - Great game, love the characters Megaman Legends - delicious gameplay and adventure, although environment graphics might have age well? Really depends, its hard to judge w/ my nostalgia glasses on Azure dreams - monster + egg + dungeon Digimon World - take care of your digimon, train and evolve him, explore the land, clean the poop, and experience the feels Chrono Trigger - It's chrono trigger Wild Arms - great jrpg w/ puzzles Persona 2: Eternal Punishment - Fuck yes! Enjoy!
Nice list, Awesome games! here´s mine 1 - Final Fantasy VII - Best ever always, first real rpg played from the begging to the end. 2 - Final Fantasy VIII - Incredible game, the realistic and war atmosphere makes it an awesome FF 3 - Suikoden II - a Castle and 108 stars(chars) plus an incredible plot, does it need to say more? masterpiece! 4 - The Legend of Dragoon - Great game, dark atmosphere, with many symbolisms, mythologies references , and great battle system. 5 - The Legend of Legaia - Very original battle(fighting) system 6 - Street Fighter Zero 3, ops it´s a fighting game lol, sorry, so I choose - Brave Fencer Musashi(action rpg) 7 - Castlevania Symphony of the Night (action Rpg) 8 - Chrono Cross - as you said, one of the best 9 - Grandia - as people pointed out, great adventure! go Justin! 10 - Final Fantasy Tactics - Excellent strategy rpg Honorable mentions - FFIX - Persona2 - Monster Rancher II - Monster Rancher - Battle Card EP2 - Parasite Eve I/II -Wild Arms - Alundra - Alundra II - A New Legend Begins - Breath of Fire III - Monster Seed (lol, has anyone played this game? one of the worst lol..) Ps1 Rocks!
CHRONO CROSS is my all time favorite game too... I played it in year 2000. The best game out there, for me. I miss Serge, Kid, Leena and the villagers in each town and the music.
Man, I have loved Chrono Cross since 2002 when I first played it. I had a tips and tricks magazine that had a section for it and used it to pick my party, branching story paths and the color sequence at the end of the game when you can use the Chrono Cross to obtain one of the endings. I used to think I was alone in it being my favorite, I don’t feel that way after seeing this. It’s gained a pretty steady following but I remember when it wasn’t liked so much even though it reviewed well.
I'm so glad you had Chrono Cross on your list, because I absolutely love that game. It's unfortunate that it never got released here in EU, but thank god for emulation. I remember playing it durring the early days of ps1 emulation. (Love the soundtrack too, by far my favorite)
Final fantasy tacticsBreath of fire 3Breath of fire 4Star Ocean The Second StoryXenogearsFinal fantasy 7Final fantasy 8Front Mission 3Suikoden 2Tales of destiny 1The ps1 era has some of the most beautiful RPGS ever made! since most game developers were just starting at that point.
Like you i really love Chrono Cross, when i played almost 20 years ago was a experience that change my life, but i play the game 3 years ago and to me dont pass the test of time, its still a great game with excellent history but not the master piece a remember, my top 3 Jrpgs for Psx that past the test of time and always be master pieces are: 1. Alundra 2. Valkirie Profile 3. Tales Of Destiny 2 (Eternia)
Final Fantasy 9 is the number one spot for me. The amount of Nostalgia can´t just be put into words. the moment that I hear that title screen music i get goosebumps and wet eyes.
Man, I completely agree with the overshadowed Wild Arms2, along with Xenogears they make my top favorite of PS1 too, the final battle is epic, like helping Goku making the Genki Dama!!!
This may be the first list I've seen with Chrono Cross in the top spot. Sadly, I was expecting Chrono Trigger 2 and never really played it objectively. Seeing this reminds me how beautiful it was, it's about time I track it down to play again. Star Ocean is another one i need to play again, if I can ever commit the time. I remember spending months in that game after it came out. SO many unique and original mechanics I'd never seen before in any game. To this day, i like cooking rabbit risotto, partly because it's delicious, but mostly because I made it in Star Ocean. Great list!
My favorites are: 1. LUNAR: Silver Star Story Complete. Chrono Cross is what made you into an RPG fanatic. This game did the same for me, nuff said. The story, soundtrack, it's spot on. My favorite dungeon theme is from this game. It's too bad that the PS1 is the best one to date, excluding the original Sega CD version. 2. LUNAR 2: Eternal Blue Complete. Although SSS is my favorite RPG, EBC is just a better game in general. Impact? I've been wearing the Pendant ever since I first got the game back in 2001. To the point where I had it remade in silver as well as gold. And got another one from a former employee! It's a shame that we're still waiting on Part 3 after all these years! 3. Valkyrie Profile. I think your video explained it all. FF9 gave you trouble? VP did the same, except that I had gone through multiple PS1s including the small one to get it to work properly. I also own the PSP version so I just stick to that one. My cousin originally gave it to me because he didn't care for it too much. 4. Final Fantasy 9. Again, your video explained it all. I don't think 9 is the best one, that title goes to 4-6, especially 6, but 9 is my favorite. 5. Vanguard Bandits. My first Strategy RPG & my first Working Designs game. Too bad it didn't get a sequel. 6. Legend of Legaia. Awesome battle system, nuff said. 7. Arc the Lad 2. My God, this one took the cake. I have yet to start 3, but I will at some point! 8. Parasite Eve. Good story, especially if you read the book first. A lot of people don't know that the game is the sequel to the book. And I enjoyed the battle system too! Have to play Part 2 at some point!
Great video Erick! here is mine 10 - Tales of Destiny 9 - Breath of Fire III 8 - Final Fantasy IX 7 - Legend of Dragoon 6 - Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete 5 - Valkyrie Profile 4 - Star Ocean Second Story 3 - Xenogears 2 - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night 1 - Suikoden 2
@@ErickLandonRPG What would the definition of an RPG be? In my opinion if you level up and has a story it's an RPG. SOTN has both. Some people say you are taking the role of a character but that can be said of any game. I've seen you call Alundra an RPG but what makes it an RPG?
10. Beyond the Beyond 9. Legend of Dragoon 8. Tales of Destiny 7. Digimon World 2 6. Persona 2 5. Megaman Legends 4. Front Mission 3 3. Chrono Cross 2. Final Fantasy 8 1. Suikoden 2
All great games! One I would add is Tales of Eternia. 2nd best gameplay in the entire series for me, awesome dual world, music and even graphics, spell animations that absolutely destroys every english Tales that came AFTER it! Reid is pretty cool too. I would probably replace Kartia with Lunar 2. But great video anyways!
Thank you for another great video! I am in love with your channel and especially with your personality! Just wondering, will you ever do a video about Kingdom Hearts series? I heard your general opinion about it, but would like to see a separate video.
Not sure I'd like to attract millions of fanboys to try to destroy me with their criticism, which is exactly what would happen if I ever made a video about it, hahahaha. I like KH2 and Birth by Sleep, by the way, they're pretty good. But as soon as I say the word "overrated", insults will rain on me.
Erick Landon RPG Ahaha! To be honest, I never thought that this game had such crazy fans. I recently got a bundle with all parts and now playing through the first one. I think it,s just a good game, but nothing more. And bought it only because of the exclusiveness for PS4 and a JRPG genre.
10. Azure Dreams 9. Legend of Mana 8. Final Fantasy 8 7. Suikoden 1 6. Breath of Fire 4 5. Star Ocean 4. Final Fantasy 7 3. Breath of Fire 3 2. Legend of the Dragoon 1. Suikoden 2
Haven't played a lot of RPGs on PS1 but I'd say my top 3 is something like 1) Grandia (even though this is actually a Saturn game) , 2) Final Fantasy 8, 3) Final Fantasy 9. Would like to play a Suikoden one day. Don't have a PS 1 anymore but maybe I could emulate it.
My favorite game of all time, which also made me a JRPG lover, is Paper Mario. I find it curious that, even though it is a top 10 JRPGs list in which you included two games within a franchise, you didn´t choose 2 Final Fantasy games. I have yet to try 9 of the games mentioned in here. Awesome list!
vagrant story and legend of dragoon are amazing. i'd have ff tactics instead of viii, and i have yet to play breath of fire 4. i recently started a game in bof3, i've seen some people claim 3 is better than 4.
Vandal Hearts is a good one I replayed that like almost 7 x just to re-collect the vandalier outfit which gave you all the skills in the game and an impenetrable shield from front left and right was so cool when I used that, collecting the items was a bitch though well worth it. Great game wish that and final fantasy tactics was remake
My favourites: 1. Lunar: Eternal Blue Complete 2. Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete 3. Grandia 4. Final Fantasy Tactics 5. Vandal Hearts 6. Suikoden 7. Suikoden II 8. Tales of Destiny 9. Breath of Fire III 10. Breath of Fire IV (Tactics Ogre omitted due to being a remake, as it was on SNES) Every game on this list is one I thoroughly enjoyed and made it to the end credits. I also have some honourable mentions in terms of game that I completed but did not quite meet the highest standard but were fun: Vandal Hearts II, Brave Fencer Musashi, Vanguard Bandits, Alundra, Arc The Lad Collection. Honourable mentions I enjoy but have yet to complete: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy IX, Wild Arms, Wild Arms II, Legend of Dragoon, Vagrant Story, Persona II: Eternal Punishment
Wow, surprised, that with so many great games, you haven´t completed Castlevania: Symphony of the Night,, a classics of the classics, and it is a very short game, and totally worthy it, the best castlevania ever by all people, lol, my hint, go for this one!
I think 7 was the best final fantasy on the PlayStation. The diverse gameplay mechanics like warming up in the snow, doing squats to get a wig, strategy game at fort condor, snowboarding, motorcycle chase, submarine battle, chocobo races, etc. Makes it the best. I liked the card game in 8 more than the one in 9. I felt like 9 lacked the level of exploration to unique settings that I got from 6, 7, and 8. 9 is beloved but I never felt that love for it.
Man, I love Chrono Cross too. I listen to the soundtrack on a regular basis. Have you seen the two videos about Chrono Cross by the UA-camr Satchell Drakes? My top PS1 RPGs 1. Chrono Cross 2. Final Fantasy IX 3. Valkyrie Profile 4. Suikoden I and II 5. Xenogears 6. Final Fantasy Tactics (and Vagrant Story) 7. Final Fantasy VII 8. Final Fantasy VIII 9. The Legend of Dragoon 10. Legend of Legaia
Great video and list. I agree with your top 6 most definitely. I would take out the back 4 however and replace them with Lunar, Lunar 2, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Breath of Fire 3. :)
Excelente top, muy nostálgico y muy valorado también, lo mejor de lo mejor. Historias, música, personajes inolvidables, no se puede pedir nada mas. Te ganaste un suscriptor y gamer veterano. Saludos.
I would recommend Valkyrie profile ds, it is my fav rpg on nds. And combat and battles is more like ff tactics with timed/action oriented? Button presses. The visuals are the same and over the top. And the sacraficing team mates with the Valkyrie plume to overpower yourself in intial unwinnable battles is fantastic. You can also recruit pretty much any npc who joins you for a battle story wise if you have room in your party. Music is same awsome ost. Love the game. Really REALLY WANT a triquel lol
Your attack animations and specials also change with each weapon you equip. It's alot of fun upgrading to new equipment becuz so. Visually satisfying for the eyes.
my top 10 best jrpg ps1 1-valkery profile 1( must play in hard mode to discover the true face of the game ) 2-wild armes 2 3-final fantasy 8 4-legend of the dragoon 5-sukoden 2 6-legend of legaia 7-final fantasy 9 8-lunar 2 9-alundra 1 10-final fantasy 7
I love Chrono Cross too!! I started with Chrono trigger but cross was close behind. I hope that one day square will eventually open it's heart and make Chrono Break, or Chrono Infinite.
I was astonished to see Kartia on this list. The PS1 is the equal-greatest console for JRPGs of all time (tied with the SNES), with endless classics, but Kartia is a game that is almost _completely_ unknown. The only place I've ever even seen it even _mentioned_ apart from by you was an original review on RPGfan back in the day, and if I recall correctly they weren't even all that impressed with it, so even though I somehow managed to lay hands on a copy of it (seriously, I have NO idea how this game even got released in Australia when we were even being denied releases of games as significant as Final Fantasy Tactics, Xenogears and Chrono Cross), I never played it for more than a cup of tea, and it's still sitting on my rack of unbeaten PS1 games, waiting for me to make time for it.
@@mohamedaminekhadhraoui6417 Does it? JRPGs were a HUGE genre on the SNES, arguably really starting to come into their own with larger cart storage. Yes, the PS1 had a huge library of JRPGs as well, but the SNES (and the Super Famicom to be fair, which isn't EXACTLY the same thing) had more than I can name including countless true classics of the genre- Final Fantasys 4-6, Dragon Quests 5 and 6, Chrono Trigger, Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana) and 3 (Trials of Mana), Breath of Fire 1 & 2, Earthbound, the Quintet trilogy (Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia & Terranigma), Lufia 1 & 2, Secret of Evermore, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Bahamut Lagoon, Tales of Phantasia, Front Mission, Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen, Star Ocean, Robotrek, Live A Live, Romancing Saga 1-3, Shadowrun...
@@ArcaneAzmadi according to a list online it's about 112 jrpgs all in all released in all regions on SNES and sfc. Ps1 has 421 and I'm not saying quantity is quality but the ps1 has way WAAAY more quality titles that aren't just nostalgia bait nowadays but aged much better.
So Erick, how does it feel to be the UA-cam classic console JRPG king? Because you are! I dunno about anyone else, but you're always at the top of MY searches! Congrats, brother! Your love of the genre shines through!

Xenogears?
damn bro, your vids bring me so much nostalgia, almost to tears sometimes.
Yeah, so many great memories within these excellent titles.
I hope ur UA-cam career sparks, I liked the video.
My personal top 10 would be:
Thank you!!!
Best list I've seen, I would put them in bit different order, n switch 1 n 2
10) Digimon World 3
9) Front Mission : 3
8) Tales of Destiny,
7) Chrono Cross,
6)Legend of the Dragoon,
5) Star Ocean : 2nd Story,
4) Breath of Fire IV,
3) Final Fantasy : Tactics
2) Final Fantasy IX,
1) Suikoden 2
Front Mission 3!
Nice list, thanks for sharing!!!
your list is good fm 3 and legend of the dragoon +1
Thank youm
I wish I could have added Xenogears but I haven't played the game, also I didn't finish Valkyrie Profile through ragnarok so I can't vouch for it as well.
i played 9,6,5,4,3,2 for me i like most 6,9,3,2,4,5 yes i dont enjoy that much playing star ocean and any star ocean series
Damn, I just heard the intro and was already in nostalgia mode. Thank you good sir for your amazing taste in these games and music.
You have diamonds on that table my good sir.
Haha, thanks.
Forreal you definitely have some gems
I'm shocked Final Fantasy 7 and 8 aren't there! and Final Fantasy Tactics?
1 - Castlevania SON
2 - Digimon world 1
3 - Star Ocean 2
4 - Tales of Destiny 2
5 - FF9
6 - Suikoden 2
7 - Grandia
8 - Chrono Cross
9 - Suikoden (should be higher but the Graphics ......well)
10 - All RPGs on ps1 were amazing a time long past.
I like how you compile your top 10 not only from the classics, but also the hidden gems. Nice list!👍🏻
Thank you!!!
i love how passionate you are in making these videos. really glad i subbed. the videos you make really feels genuine.
Thank you very much for your feedback, I greatly appreciate it!
Legend of Legaia is my number #1 PS1 JRPG ever made.
Over FF7? Xenogears? Chrono cross ans FF tactics?
so nice, really great game, I was replaying a little yesterday
i would have ff tactics, the legend of dragoon, and vagrant story in my top 10.
Great list! Though I would've sacrificed suikoden 1 since u added 2 to make room for other unique PS1 gems such as Parasite Eve or Threads of Fate or breath of fire 3.
or legend of dragoon of vagrant story.
You really deserve not less than 1M subscribers
much love dude ❤❤❤
Thank you!!!!
Man, you have the best rpg channel in UA-cam.
Thank you!!!!
Brought tears to my eyes when i remember all the time i spent playing those games...
A very solid list; I agree with most of it esp. chrono cross being the top and choosing ff9 instead of the rest. However, instead of the srpgs and action RPG you included I would choose legend of legaia, legend of dragoon, breath of fire 3 and maybe 4 and Koudelka
Thanks!
I agree with Legaia and BOF. Both underrated rpg's
Nice list very unique and now for my bland vanilla top ten no fan translations
10 Tactics Ogre Let's Cling Together
Underrated masterpiece
9 Tales of Destiny
Cliched story, poorly aged combat,1 dimensional but fun characters and very charming
8 Parasite Eve
Great music and intriguing plot
7 Breath of Fire IV
Second to Legend of Mana and SaGa Frontier II when it comes to 2d PS1 games
6 The Legend of Dragoon
I'm still signing petitions for a sequel to this day
5 Grandia
Best turned based battle system
4 Chrono Cross
Better than Trigger. Catch me outside how about dat.
3 Final Fantasy VIII
My first RPG ever my only experience with video game storytelling was Spyro and I jaws was on the floor with the opening FMV. Also Zell is husbando.
2 Final Fantasy IX
If Jeopardy had the question what is a JRPG? Final Fantasy IX is the correct response.
Honourable mentions Valkrie Profile, Breath of Fire III, Dragon Quest VII and Tales of Eternia are on different lists.
1 Final Fantasy VII
Because I'm basic garbage, sue me lol. Aerith is best girl.
FF7 is a great game, even though I consider it overrated I will never admit it's bad!
Thanks for sharing your list!
i played 5 of your list my most favevorite to those are both tactics ogre and legend of dragoon and the other 3 is valkyrie profile, breath of fire not sure what series it was and final fantasy 9 those 3 is also great, now i cant wait for divinity original sin 2 and dragon quest 11 i'm both new to the series but i'm quite sure i will like them both
If you like the combat from Grandia, you should give Trails of Cold Steel a try.
Chad
some says ffvii is the best in ps1 series, some says its ffix, but for me the magic happens on ffviii,
thanks for the list, thanks to you I tried FF IX and fell in love with it. Keen to try those/most of these in the future. Keep up the good stuff!
Great list Erick! Always good to see someone talking about franchises that i really like so much(Suikoden and Vandal Hearts).
I so need to play Final Fantasy 9 after hearing Eric recommend it. Suikoden 2 will always be my favorite RPG of all Time!
Suikoden 2, as it implies 2nd, is my second best rpg. Chrono cross is my number 1. I can see why Suikoden 2 is also great. Soundtracks great, and storyline as well. Longer game play and unique mobs and bosses.
I agree suikoden II is the best for me as well
I am in the middle of Final Fantasy 9 and it’s amazing, definitely the best Final Fantasy.
1. Phantasy Star 2
2. Cosmic Star Heroine
3. Final Fantasy 5 (an odd choice maybe, but I loved it)
4. Ys Origins
5. Grandia
6. Final Fantasy 9
7. Lost Sphear (I don't think it rated very highly, but I just loved it and the characters.)
8. Breath of Fire 3
9. Dragon Quest 5 (incredible Story)
10. Final Fantasy 4
Please understand, my list is a bit weird, but I am new to JRPGs and didn't play them back in the day. This is some of what I've enjoyed the most since I started playing JRPGs.
Don't worry, man, it's cool, those are all great games, as a matter of fact. But just so you know, Cosmic Star Heroine is not Japanese, it's from the US. Thanks for sharing!
Man... You haven't played Chrono Trigger huh? Get on it, by reading your top games you're going to LOVE it.
I’m just getting into them too. Good list :)
play Final Fantasy 6 next. then Suikoden I then 2. then play Final Fantasy 9
Always love your videos bud. Keep the passion!!!!
Thank you!!!
Thank you for loving Chrono Cross. It was my first RPG and my favourite of all time
back when I was just a kid, I fell in love with chrono cross, I played it for hours consecutively, but sadly when I reached disc 2, my 2nd disc isn't working, there's no more game store selling this game, and online selling isn't a thing back then.. so time passed, year 2019, I decided to go on a mission to play all my childhood games, I downloaded an emulator on my android, and the first game I played is this Chrono cross, Now my childhood will haunt me no more.
So how did that turn out?
Imagine my backlog, trying to build the upcoming hidden gems videos and replaying some of the best of for all the remakes. Hahahahaha.
im sure my backlog is 3 times more lot than yours lol. i want to play so many rpgs on many emulators but school tasks and exams limiting my time to play any DX
I really like watching these videos and I've never owned a PS1!
Attacking giant slug with salt stick in Vandals Hearts is really brilliant idea 🤩🤩
Great list!
Here’s mine.
1. Valkyrie Profile
2. Final Fantasy 7
3. Final Fantasy 9
4. Tales of Destiny 2
5. Suikoden ll
These are my PERSONAL favorite RPGs in ps1/psx:
10. Legend Of Dragoon
9. Grandia
8. Lunar Silver Star Story Complete
7. Final Fantasy 8
6. Final Fantasy 6
5. Xenogears
4. Final Fantasy 4
3. Wild Arms 2
2. Final Fantasy 9
1. Suikoden 2
I've always enjoyed seeing your NIN shirts or fingerless black gloves as they seemed to suggest you were a man of culture. Tobacco sunburst strat solidifies this feeling, knew you were top shelf quality ;)
Legend of Legaia will always be my number 1.
Did you play Legaia 2? I feel like it's super underrated.
same... such an underrated gem. Hyper Arts ftw haha.
i still have my original ps1 copy from 15 years ago holy shit lol
This is a great video. I enjoyed every one of the games you placed on the list, and I appreciate the fact that you really seem to love the genre. Also, the fact that Kartia actually gets some attention is good. Anyway, keep up the excellent work man. You have a good channel.
Thank you very much for your feedback, I greatly appreciate it!
That into song *.* loved it!
6. Parasite Eve
5. Xenogears
4. Chrono Cross
3. Final Fantasy IX
2. Final Fantasy VIII
1. Final Fantasy VII
I respect your list.
You played Kartia? haha that game was great! These are ALL good RPGS!
Making a top 10 for PS1 is SOOO hard, and I don't know if I should have Castlevania SOTN on it, but it has some RPG elements in it... I leave it out for now.
1. Xenogears (Just the best game ever, period)
2. Valkyrie Profile (Just the second best game ever, period)
3. Grandia (this game is all about nostalgia for me, one of the first JRPG:s i played and finished)
4. Suikoden II (The best of this series, just wonderful)
Woooow love yogur vids, all the ps1 rpgs and jrpgs are awesome most of all, do you have all of them
Trying to make a top 10 for the Playstation is impossible for me there is so so many great games that deserve to be in the top 10.

Ps1 Rocks!
Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome, I'm just such a big fan of it :)
I forgot that Suikoden had these Duel Battles.
I'm a Fan of Yasunori Matsuda for Xenogears and Chrono Trigger.
Hey man loving the videos but just curious where are you from? I'm sure you said it before in a video just haven't seen it yet.

Damn bro with that ff9 on second place u definitely got my sub! Good job mate
best FF and my first FF WILD
@@yungjroc5193 yeah me same :D
Like you i really love Chrono Cross, when i played almost 20 years ago was a experience that change my life, but i play the game 3 years ago and to me dont pass the test of time, its still a great game with excellent history but not the master piece a remember, my top 3 Jrpgs for Psx that past the test of time and always be master pieces are:
1. Alundra
2. Valkirie Profile
3. Tales Of Destiny 2 (Eternia)
#1. Xenogears
#2. Suikoden II
congratulations Erick, i am your fan recently but can recognize you like the masterpiece bos master rpgist! see you
Thanks
Great video as always. In my personal opinion the podium would be VP - Suiko 2 and Chrono Cross, but i agree with your top 100%.
I was so tempted to put VP among the first places, but my love for Suikoden 1 & 2 and the nostalgia value of FF9 pushed it to number 5.
Erick you are incredible, and such an education for me as a gamer & collector!
Please make more videos and get a high-quality camera & mic please!
Thank you, I'm working on that.
When i see chrono cross at number 1 i have to sub to you now. My absolute fave
Thank you and welcome!
Final Fantasy 9 is the number one spot for me. The amount of Nostalgia can´t just be put into words. the moment that I hear that title screen music i get goosebumps and wet eyes.
Hahaha, same here, that theme at the menu screen is just flawless.
Great list!
My favorites are:
Interesting list. Thank you for sharing!
Great video Erick! here is mine
10 - Tales of Destiny
9 - Breath of Fire III
8 - Final Fantasy IX
7 - Legend of Dragoon
6 - Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
5 - Valkyrie Profile
4 - Star Ocean Second Story
3 - Xenogears
2 - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
1 - Suikoden 2
Nice list, although SotN is not an RPG; it has elements, yes, but it's not an RPG.
@@ErickLandonRPG What would the definition of an RPG be? In my opinion if you level up and has a story it's an RPG. SOTN has both. Some people say you are taking the role of a character but that can be said of any game. I've seen you call Alundra an RPG but what makes it an RPG?
My no.1 will always be Xenogears. Thanks for making this video.
2 disc too? where thay just skiped 50% of game?...
@@albert8997 never got the love for that game. it's not bad but it feels so slow and drags on for so long at times, it really tested my patience.

Ooo Persona 2! :)
what do u know about legend of dragoon LOL
again, try Shining the Holy Ark, maybe it will be on the Saturn top 10 list
All great games! One I would add is Tales of Eternia. 2nd best gameplay in the entire series for me, awesome dual world, music and even graphics, spell animations that absolutely destroys every english Tales that came AFTER it! Reid is pretty cool too. I would probably replace Kartia with Lunar 2. But great video anyways!
i remember year 1999 here in the philippines i played chrono cross i unlock every character without cheats

nice list, own most of them, chrono cross is also my ps1 favorite rpg, along with bof 3, ps1 cant be beaten in terms of rpgs
I love Wild Arms 2 man. Also, I would add Vanguard Bandits, Grandia, Thousand Arms and Lunar to the list as well.
I have Suikoden II. That is one of the best games ever made of all time. It is so epic.
@JulianRock DUDE, do yourself a favour stop playing tierkreis right now and go play 1,2,3 and 4 and please then get the 5th.

4. Final Fantasy 7
3. Breath of Fire 3
2. Legend of the Dragoon
1. Suikoden 2
Ah yesss I always get excited when I see suikoden II in the first place
Thanks!
Chrono Croos was one of my favorites too men, cheers
Cheers!
on my list there would be Final Fantasy VIII too and definitly Legend of Dragoon, Breath of Fire IV and Vagrant Story!!!
vagrant story and legend of dragoon are amazing. i'd have ff tactics instead of viii, and i have yet to play breath of fire 4. i recently started a game in bof3, i've seen some people claim 3 is better than 4.
What do you think of Legend of Legaia?
I think 7 was the best final fantasy on the PlayStation. The diverse gameplay mechanics like warming up in the snow, doing squats to get a wig, strategy game at fort condor, snowboarding, motorcycle chase, submarine battle, chocobo races, etc. Makes it the best. I liked the card game in 8 more than the one in 9. I felt like 9 lacked the level of exploration to unique settings that I got from 6, 7, and 8. 9 is beloved but I never felt that love for it.
yep totally miss legend of dragoon for me, and maybe breath of fire 3 (because it was my first rpg ever so I'm biased ^^)
Man, I love Chrono Cross too. I listen to the soundtrack on a regular basis. Have you seen the two videos about Chrono Cross by the UA-camr Satchell Drakes?
My top PS1 RPGs
1. Chrono Cross

Great video and list. I agree with your top 6 most definitely. I would take out the back 4 however and replace them with Lunar, Lunar 2, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Breath of Fire 3. :)
Thanks!
Suikoden 1 2, Wild Arms 1 and 2 , Legend of Legaia, Jade Cocoon, DW3 Front Mission 3 and many more.
No body ever mentions Vanguard Bandits , that game was amazing !!
agree. it will always be my favorite jrpg
Legend of legaia, legend of mana, final fantasy IX, breath of fire 4,front mission
Excelente top, muy nostálgico y muy valorado también, lo mejor de lo mejor.
Historias, música, personajes inolvidables, no se puede pedir nada mas.

Visually satisfying for the eyes.
my top 10 best jrpg ps1
1-valkery profile 1( must play in hard mode to discover the true face of the game )
2-wild armes 2
3-final fantasy 8
4-legend of the dragoon
5-sukoden 2
6-legend of legaia
7-final fantasy 9
8-lunar 2
9-alundra 1
10-final fantasy 7
Lunar 2 was a port wasn't it, though i would add it to my list as well, LOVE THAT GAME. I miss GameArts and their hokey voice acting.
ya me too...
I love Chrono Cross too!!
I started with Chrono trigger but cross was close behind. I hope that one day square will eventually open it's heart and make Chrono Break, or Chrono Infinite.
Parasite Eve 2 is one of my all time favs ever... sadly i never see it on any list :(
1 was better, but 2 was great too!
@@selendile030 I agree
Weird how you're putting the SNES on the same level as ps1 considering it has a 5th of ps1's RPGs.
The classic founding fathers rpgs they truly are great!
