FS formula has always been AC1. Miyazaki's takeover just rebranded a dystopia sci-fi with dark fantasy. Also, the game scene changed. A lot of publishers started milking their games and began to push out awful games for a quick cash grab.

I'd say that it's only really with Dark Souls did FromSoft get that magic mixture of difficulty with accessibility right, especially with its change to a semi-open world structure and the bonfire system that makes it feel more enticing than the separated levels of Demon's Souls. So. Damn. True……Last Raven is a masterclass of its own, and I’m honestly shocked to not really see any of the NG+ or other unique features return in any Fromsoft titles after it…… oh wait, that’s because most of the OG AC devs quit Fromsoft and that’s why we haven’t had any AC games in a decade LOL.
I don't agree with quite a few things connected to Geoff but I do respect the things he's done for video games. The game awards are kinda wonky if you know what I mean but they and Geoff himself have been very adamant about video games being a media to be taken seriously like books, film or music and I will never forget the day he dunked on that news host by simply asking "have you even played Mass Effect?" Still gonna call him the lord of Dew and Doritos tho.
This is true….but could’ve also been a joke, as many reviewers made jokes about the numbers in games that don’t really follow the numbers. As they also said they were getting a little sick with these titles, and AC4 was the 12th mainline title in 9 years.
I gotta at least say, his complaints at the time were valid. Armored Core games in the early aughts were coming out sometimes twice a year. Within them the gameplay had become stale. Armored Core was pretty much in an EA style loop of repackaging the same game with a few cans of paint dumped on it. The Mech style game (Battletech and Armored Core style mechs) were really piling on and the genre waaaaay oversaturated causing it to all but die in the very early 2010's. I'm glad mech's have been slowly coming back. I just hope the new AC is a little more forgiving than the past iterations as I just don't have the patience I seemingly had back in the day even though I still love the genre.
There's more gameplay changes between two numbered entries of armored core than there is between DeS and Elden Ring. Game reviewers have always been rats that follow popular trends.
AC4 have extemly faster combat speed than previous AC. after the failure of AC4, Miyazaki realized that people need to be ease into these kind of combat. thus he creat demon soul. a slower action combat, then dark soul, then dark soul 3 with faster combat that everybody like, then blood born with very fast counter and sekiro with very fast deflect. now he believed that we are ready for the fast action mech game that is the AC in his vision
AC4 just wasn't good, and it's not due to the speed. That everyone went back and improved on it with the sequel, For Answer, shows that there really was potential in it. Heck, can't even use speed as an excuse, FA was FASTER. But starting the 4th generation with a flop onto the face wasn't great. Also, ACV was way more popular than 4, and it's not THAT different.
To his defense, the overall reviews for AC4 and the franchise as a whole were never really good. From Software got a lot of momentum thanks to their Souls games, and although I liked the original AC they weren't AAA games, I'm glad From has grown and has a chance to finally do the series justice with the experience they acquired.
To be fair AC4 kinda did suck. I never played 4A but I've heard it was much better. But as someone who loved AC up to gen 3, 4 just lost me. Bland, empty environments, short missions, none of the parts really spoke to me, and I wasn't a fan of the high speed aerial gameplay. AC6 looks like it will have what I loved from AC3 and before but also have something for the AC4 fans too.
No wonder he didnt like it, he didnt know there was boosting and Aerial combat. He also picked the PS3? version, at that time it still had a poor adoption rate in the West. so naturally its not going to have many MP players.
Such a fucking ridiculous thing to say. Honestly so stupid that this is so many commenters' takeaway from this harmless video. You telling me you haven't changed a single opinion of yours in the past 16 years?
Could just be the time period. Zombie games were the shit in 2010s and now they feel very tired and boring. I'm sure in 5 or 10 years zombie games will become a trend and will feel novel again.
G4 and honnestly game jurnos in general back then had this weird obsession with shitting on Japanese games. Sometimes veering on actual racism which...well it's very ironic lol All I'll say is you'd have to be very innocent to genuinely think he "came around"
It's true though. AC1 and its installments were revolutionary. AC2 to VD were all subpar to the standards of their time. If I were to put it in perspective, 4&4A were PS2 level. 5&VD were PS3. The hardware can take more. So, how about any gameplay advancements? Still, nothing new. For 4 and 4A, there were multiplayer but once again, other games were so far ahead that this isn't notable. Comparing AC games to their predecessors, yes, they were making significant changes. Although, comparing it to AC1 or the games of their times, not so much. Those assessments were valid. Nevertheless, they are enjoyable to play. Unfortunately, just behind the times. Miyazaki did bring back the AC4 series close to AC1 series, if not improved it. He gave us a creative direction that the past 2 installments (2 and 3 series) were afraid of doing. He broke the usual Raven character (technically both Mercenary and Strayed were Ravens or Originals) and gave us Lynx. Another thing he did is that he made anime battles playable, instead of just being reserved for 9Ball introducing new cores called NEXT. David vs Goliath type boss battles with attacking Arms Forts or base raids/defenses. AC series had always felt like a dungeon exploration while AC1 and 4 series felt like missions. Still, they lack when compared to games such as CoD (activision and treyarch) campaign or zombies or Battlefield's game modes and vehicles. Halo's campaign, split-screen coop and multiplayer. Assassin's Creed and Mirror's Edge parkour system. Forza's hyper realistic gameplay. GTA IV's Roman's invitation for bowling. Dead Space meticulous designed horror. Fallout 3's shift to 1st and 3rd person compared to previous Fallout series of top down. Spiderman's wall and swinging gameplay. StarWar's insane story campaign. Army of Two's default coop gameplay. So and so on. AC4 series (being FS's 2nd best AC series) were lackluster in the grand scheme of things. Think of Demon's Souls. It wasn't big. It took Dark Souls to make Demon Souls big. Even still, Dark Souls only got lucky because the video game scene changed. DS's main success was due to the fact that games started coddling you while DS was still so late that it hasn't adapted to giving you waypoints, maps, or stale story. Everything was still made with passion. To simply using Bethesda as an example, Dark Souls is Morrowind. That's how far behind FromSoftware was. Them being stuck in the past actually made their games unique. Something that was different to new players but older players are more familiar with. So it is exciting for new players but nostalgic for old players. FS had been stale for the longest time and that is why AC4 were subpar when it was released. Nobody knew how badly the game scene was going to get. Nobody knew of the microtransactions. Only DLCs were beginning to surface and everyone agreed it was a harmless business practice. It is still far superior to what AAA publishers started doing and that is to release new games every year (which the quality is low because it was rushed and it was also so the fan base would immediately buy the next one)
He shat on AC when it was cool to do so, now he's sucking Fromsofts sick now that it's cool to do so. Whats so hard to understand? Lots of normies who would have said "AC looks like weird animu crap" who now rabidly lick Miyazakis feet because Elden Rong was popular.
Bruh. It's been 17 years. Geoff could be hypocrite, but people can change in a year, even more in 17. If Geoff was the same person today as in 2006, there would be something wrong with him.
These Souls fans will cock suck everything done by From Software decades into the past even though they were a MID ass Japanese video game company before demon’s souls.
The old fromsoft games ARE bad, it's a fair take. The OG AC1 is quite good + King's Field, but then there's nothing worth playing until DeS (Tenchu is not good either). DeS through till now actually shows From pushing the standards higher and higher, combined with most competing studios producing boring walking sims and From is the best in town after 10+ years of great games.
Tbh he was right back then. Now he's just hypebeasting his best buddies up. I'm sure armored core 6 will be the definitive armored core but I'm also sure that in a parallel universe where they didnt make souls games or anything else in the last 10 years and now came out with the same armored core as they are in our universe it would be received so much worse. Soulsborne has granted fromsoft so much popularity that it can make a grindy unfriendly armored core game popular with it as well.
It’s almost like they took 10 years of releases into account each time. Fromsoft was effectively nothing before Demon’s Souls. The level of polish those games had going through Demond’s to dark to senior to blood borne then elden ring is absurd. Games they made in the 2000s were not like that. Go play that decade of games then come back.
I’m not really trying to say anything lol, I just thought it was funny. But also, I have played King’s Field and AC and I enjoy them a lot. The polish is certainly not there, but they’ve got a lot going for them.

You can't just respond to a clip from 16 years ago as if it of a statement that was made yesterday. Mech games were very trendy for a while way back then. This has nothing to do with "now From is big" or whatever. A lot can change in 16 years.
@@wraithwrecker_ What part of my response read as current given the verbiage indicating time? Mech games were not trendy, they never have been. I had to agree with him. Armored core 4 may lacking at some part of it's gameplay and stuff but it does improve on the For Answer
Dorito Pope had a change of heart eh
goes to show how much of a shill this dude is, something becomes popular and suddenly he's talking about the "long history and importance" of the series he used to hate on.
If only he played the best armored core game (Last Raven my beloved) maybe he would have appreciated more the series 😫
So. Damn. True……Last Raven is a masterclass of its own, and I’m honestly shocked to not really see any of the NG+ or other unique features return in any Fromsoft titles after it……
oh wait, that’s because most of the OG AC devs quit Fromsoft and that’s why we haven’t had any AC games in a decade LOL.
lol those dudes where smoking something ac4 was awesome... 4A was even better
Ok that's wild, a 4 for AC 4!?!?
I don't agree with quite a few things connected to Geoff but I do respect the things he's done for video games. The game awards are kinda wonky if you know what I mean but they and Geoff himself have been very adamant about video games being a media to be taken seriously like books, film or music and I will never forget the day he dunked on that news host by simply asking "have you even played Mass Effect?" Still gonna call him the lord of Dew and Doritos tho.
Blast from the past.
I think the most telling part of the review is thinking AC4 is the 4th game in the series...
This is true….but could’ve also been a joke, as many reviewers made jokes about the numbers in games that don’t really follow the numbers.
As they also said they were getting a little sick with these titles, and AC4 was the 12th mainline title in 9 years.
@@abyssphantom6786 I don't know whether the original comment about the game being 4th in the series was a joke or not, but I know mine was...
Eat that dirt Geoff, eat that dirt.

@@dingusdangus9299 change does not mean good.
It feels more like dlc because you can cross save in one of those game
I do think it was a little more justified in an era before online title updates, but... yeah, it was a heck of a lot.
I mean no, whenever the number changes in an AC game (every 3 to 5 games) they revamp the entire system and start over?
Duality of man
The video is hilarious. Too bad so many commenters are here to circlejerk themselves raw instead of having a nice chuckle and then moving on.
4 was meh, for answer was the god tier ac game
I came here because of VatiVidya recommending you. This was the first video I watched...instant subscription.
Wonder if Geoff plays games anymore
He doesn't
AC4 have extemly faster combat speed than previous AC. after the failure of AC4, Miyazaki realized that people need to be ease into these kind of combat. thus he creat demon soul. a slower action combat, then dark soul, then dark soul 3 with faster combat that everybody like, then blood born with very fast counter and sekiro with very fast deflect. now he believed that we are ready for the fast action mech game that is the AC in his vision
I cannot stand Dark Souls III combat and I think it's easily the worst Souls game.
@@Broformist well, its not for you then.
And now AC6 won game of the year.
We won, Ravens.
"We will see who is 4 of 10 now, Jeffy"
This is great lol
Affliction Keighley is the best Keighley.
Armored Core 4 was a great game. Played it to hell and back when it was BRAND NEW. Thanks for nothing, GEOFF!
tbf armored core 4 is one of the worst AC games so he isn't wrong about it specifically
you are trans btw
It definitely was a bit rough, but its sequel For Answer really improved on a lot of things.
lmaoaoooaoooaooo
perfect
No wonder he didnt like it, he didnt know there was boosting and Aerial combat.
He also picked the PS3? version, at that time it still had a poor adoption rate in the West. so naturally its not going to have many MP players.
Classic Keighley L
Nah I gotta agree AC4 was kinda trash. 4A is where it's at
Definition of a d rider lmao, cmon Keighley don’t act like you’re all excited for AC now lmao
Such a fucking ridiculous thing to say. Honestly so stupid that this is so many commenters' takeaway from this harmless video. You telling me you haven't changed a single opinion of yours in the past 16 years?
To be fair, i don't think even the PS3 was released.
Could just be the time period. Zombie games were the shit in 2010s and now they feel very tired and boring. I'm sure in 5 or 10 years zombie games will become a trend and will feel novel again.
me when dark souls dropped 800 times so their games are good now
Their games are good
@@bruther7892 yeah, the armored core ones are, don't care for souls though
I guess he liked armored core v better?

Lmao I don’t understand the problem ? Armored core 4 was bad and before Miyazaki changed the industry so it’s legit
the thing is he is kinda not wrong ac 4 is one of the worst armored core games only loosing to nexus evolution disk and ac5
yes, for answer it is way better
lol how times can change. I never even heard of Fromsoft until dark souls
G4 and honnestly game jurnos in general back then had this weird obsession with shitting on Japanese games.
Sometimes veering on actual racism which...well it's very ironic lol
All I'll say is you'd have to be very innocent to genuinely think he "came around"
He "came around" the dollar bills alright!
More like he "came around" his pants when he smelled the money lol
To be fair Armored Core 4 does kinda suck
Your opinion
It was decent but for answer was the best of all series
Its just people who haven't even played it larping as hardcore ac fanboys in the comments. Really bizzare
the guy doing the review is a dirty rocket user... who would slow down game speed so you can't dodge his rockets.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
It is still far superior to what AAA publishers started doing and that is to release new games every year (which the quality is low because it was rushed and it was also so the fan base would immediately buy the next one)
lmao
This is a hilariously toxic comment section!
"People CHANGING an opininon?!? NO he EVIL GAME JOURNALIST BURN IN HELL"
He shat on AC when it was cool to do so, now he's sucking Fromsofts sick now that it's cool to do so. Whats so hard to understand? Lots of normies who would have said "AC looks like weird animu crap" who now rabidly lick Miyazakis feet because Elden Rong was popular.
I mean it is not like he is wrong but kinda hilarious
every industry is full of hypocrites
Bruh.
It's been 17 years. Geoff could be hypocrite, but people can change in a year, even more in 17. If Geoff was the same person today as in 2006, there would be something wrong with him.

AC4 was ass. Grow up.
Ac4 is a pretty shit game ngl
These Souls fans will cock suck everything done by From Software decades into the past even though they were a MID ass Japanese video game company before demon’s souls.
He was right. 4 sucked.
I hope when you say King's Field you're saying all of King's Field, because KF IV is legit.
Someone hasn't played Shadow Tower Abyss lol
From didn't even make Tenchu. That was Sony's internal dev team, Japan Studio. From just published one of their titles later on.
From came in late to make Tenchu. That was Acquire, Sony and some others before them.
Just say you have adhd and move on
Bro most Armored Core games are literally the opposite of grindy
grind???
Armored core, grindy? Do you ever play Armored Core?
"Grindy"
I've played through AC3 and Silent Line and the only way I can see it as grindy is if you poorly manage ammo and repair costs.

@@LoreHunter You might not be trying to say anything intentionally but it does seem to me a bit irresponsible to release something like this without any care of the effect it can have on people. Even with the disclaimer I was still left with the impression you were actively trying to discredit and attack Geoff but I guess you really just thought it was funny. Just my two cents man, nothing against you personally and hope you keep up the good work!
@@LoreHunter no, it was pretty funny, but I think it’s interesting how much people care about AC now. They really tried a lot of interesting stuff in later games that they reworked into Souls. I really hope, with how nobody cares about the brown colored sandy military shooters we might actually be heading into a new golden age. Last Nintendo direct was amazing. Things really are looking up.
@@ThePiiianist yeah, dorito pope can be a good but I wanted to tell someone of the only interaction I ever had with the guy. He used to do this article type where he would embed with a company as they launched their game, like “the final 24 hours of Half Life 2”, and I asked him in an AMA if he was planning another article like that.
He said he was doing one on No Man’s Sky. Obviously we know the history there and he never actually posted the article. This was a fairly generous act. I don’t love how much he pushes Kohima or his vision for the game awards, but…he’s really not a bad guy in the end. He probably spent money doing that embed, and I don’t think he really got anything from sending it to file 13 besides goodwill from Hello Games (good guys all around by the way).
I did play that decade of games and had way more fun than Dark Souls 1 and 2 ever offered.
he is like that "demon's souls" dude (shuhei yoshida) that was shitting on it and then like ...... ahh hahahaha lmao
He can't come out and say he thinks mech games suck anymore, even if he thinks so. He's not just some dude reviewing games and you could freely speak your mind back then (plus, wasn't very friendly between East and West back then in games), bigger position and professionalism is expected of him. And he wants a cut of that pie announcing them now that they are big and not some small Japanese studio.
They have had popularity in their niche audiences, never beyond that. And yes, it does. The West looked down on Japan then and took as many shots as possible at it because competition was more fierce. Journalists have always been more bold going going after smaller devs, which FromSoftware was. Jeff can't reflect the same views in his position now even if he still thinks the same, given FromSoftware's record of successes with turning a niche IP into something the industry no imitates.
