So how good was Armored Core: For Answer? A look at FromSoft's fastest mecha game.

  • Last year at the game awards "armored core fires of rubicon" got announced and as a result got me interested in taking a look at the series. I've always been a Fromsoft fan but for whatever reason I've never been able to give this series its due; until now. I'm definitely new to the series so this review will be from the perspective of someone checking it out for the first time. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised it was as good as people said it was. It has an addicting form of gameplay I never knew I needed. There's something relaxing about experimenting with different types of builds, seeing what works and what doesn't.
My only real complaint is that this game is in dire need of a PC port. Robot customization would be a lot more smoother with the convince of a keyboard and mouse, and the games performance would instantly sky rocket. Aside from that the core gameplay is really solid.

In the nuances of the technical stats, a missed detail I love is the aspect that when you run out of ammo you will purge (drop) the weapon, and if you have a tiny backup equipped you will use it. However if you set yourself to use the advanced controls, you can purge weapons manually. This is useful for when what you're armed with isn't right for the situation. Purging a weapon and dropping that weight gains you a lot of speed and energy recovery.
I had one build that was deliberately too much weight on an otherwise light frame. It could fire a ton of effective missiles and would burn through that ammo quickly, before switching modes to be a speedy close range fighter. And so of course it was safe to purge sooner and just toss that ammo away to switch to fast mode.
Similarly I had a build taking advantage of quirks around stabilizers. Normally you might consider more front or back weight for a better top speed in whichever direction. I went with heavy weight to one side which affects both speed and turning. So escaping meant preferring boosting to the side with better speed, close combat meant boosting the other way for sharp quick turns.

I used this mechanic for the "Occupation of Arteria Carpals" mission.
Was running double kojima rockets at a massive energy deficit. Fired off all my missiles at the start of the fight before purging so that my NEXT could actually function.

The real story is your online battles in a king of skills, 4d chess, and polished integration of the weapons and styles that are present. The ability to adapt and overcome in Pvp fights and within a time limit is this games heart. The rivalry and ability to push one another in combat was the core mechanic which kept the community in loyalty to this franchise. There are no mecha games that come close in terms of this quality.

Surprisingly Miyazaki was the one who probably made the series more comprehensible, not less. Cryptic storytelling had always been FromSoft’s trademark. The theme of AC never changed, revolving around the same subjects. However, in the past they weren’t so obvious as storytelling wasn’t the priority. That all changed in Last Raven, the first project Miyazaki was officially onboard. There were more cutscenes with things happening, more dialogues, more chatters, an entire information tab and most important of all, a clear direction of where the story goes.

      @Moe_Infinity 7 місяців тому +5

Actually, Last Raven's story was more on Dai Takemura's work, as he was the one directing it and was on the Nexus game as well, which is a prequel to Last Raven. You'll see a lot of story elements used from Nexus (which was also continued from the AC3 storyline) to Last Raven, including where the storyline left off.
Miyazaki apparently was more involved with the AI of the game. Gigazine had an interview with him discussing his role in it:
      G:
Source is Gigazine's Dark Souls Interview with Miyazaki, the interview is still up on their site to this day (you can easily google it)
That said though, Miyazaki was the one who was directing AC4 later on.
Edit: whoops misspelling and some grammar correction
Edit2: crap, probably just stick with the original text. Just copy paste it on google if you want the full interview, since youtube doesn't allow links and the gsc translation seems messy.

You are right to say that the biggest hurdle this game has is the barrier to entry, and to proficiency, with the gigantic amount of variables present
I've played this shit back in 5th grade with Armored Core 4. Back then, I brute forced everything in just about every regard. It was frequently frustrating to say the least, especially in missions like The Womb. When I returned to AC4A in high school, I sat down and read about a lot of these variables and what they meant. It gave me an edge that wasn't there before

You actually missed a particular mechanic known as FRS memory which is from the simulation/order matches, it allows you to tune the specifics of the core, allowing you to increase certain stats of parts, from how durable the PA is, to how much energy a quick boost does, to how much output your energy cannons have or how powerful your radars are, these don't seem huge but can influence more than you realize, with some subtle changes such as the color of beam sabers being changed due to different memory allocations

      - Too many cutscenes. It's especially annoying in arena when the camera zooms up to your opponent and you can't skip it.
      - Too many ECM missions.
      - Storytelling. Briefings in Evolution were cut to shit, the cutscenes don't tell anything, and all important info is now behind the massive bore of mail text.

I appreciate that you talked about generators, boosting and weight distribution. One fun thing to note is you can also use weight distribution to give you an extra boost in certain directions. Like you mentioned needing a lot of forward thrust to do melee effectively, well having a more forward leaning mech also increases your forward boost. A sniper mech might want to lean back more to help them back away faster. I really love the customization in these games.

one of my favorite techniques to master is the rapid 180. you quick boost on the ground and with no thrust, as you slide, you turn left or right and you are able to turn around a lot faster than doing a normal turn. It allows you to boost past your enemy and turn around to your enemy before the enemy realizes whats happening. the catch is, depending on your weight, thrust and stability, you can either only rapid turn a just little bit or you can turn too much and just end up doing near 360. However, once you get the balance just right and pull that perfect 180, it's so satisfying.
I remember building a mech in 4 Answer that took me couple of days to build and fine tune. In the end, it was blistering fast, energy efficient, accurate and can pull a perfect 180 in a rapid ground boost turn. Had a friend try to face me with every Mech in his arsenal, it didn't go well for him.

The NEXTs are in fact, Next generation Armored cores. Using Kojima particles throughout (basically a super-radiation) its power and propulsion system allowed it to basically be a pretty much one-seater flying nuclear dirty bomb that can accelerate to supersonic speed. Older generation armored cores, named as "Normals" In-game appears as enemies in lot of missions. However, Pretty much everyone can pilot normals if they receive a proper training, but piloting a NEXT requires special ability called AMS compatibility. Basically a pilot's brain gets wired to NEXTs, allowing lightning-fast reaction time, but finding people with AMS compatibility is hard, to the point that a corporation deploying five NEXTs can be regarded as "they are throwing everything they got".

I think a lot of people love this game only because it was the first one they played. It is so far removed from how all the earlier ones played as to basically have been a different game all together at that point. ACV/VD got so much hate not because they were bad AC games, but because they weren't 4/4A.

    • @Justin-xi6ue
      @Justin-xi6ue Рік тому

Tbh as someone who grew up with Master of Arena and later played a few of the early PS2 titles ACV turned out to be absolutely terrible for me.. Unfortunately I really didn't enjoy it. I thought I would which is why I bought it near launch but unfortunately it was just not what I expected. It was way more complicated than the earlier games, the story was the most uninteresting/confusing, the game lagged just as bad as the PS3 GTA games and even worse during some story missions, and then finally online play was just absolutely brutal..
If you didn't know any of the piloting techniques and didn't know all the ins and outs of customizing, you often would get destroyed and then have to wait for a new match. The matches were short, respawn was slow, and you often dealt with network lag.. You'd hit the person 9000 times, you did no damage, and then they'd be the one to kill you instead. If I remember correctly as well there was also quite a number of mecha parts that were extremely imbalanced too. Generally though it was just super annoying to spend so long on a build sometimes, only to find out you suck and then having to deal with the above mentioned problems.
Continuing on about the online aspect of that game though.. HARDLY anyone was usually playing. Like I said I bought the game near launch and I was pretty shocked in a way to see how empty it was. This was bad because in a number of the missions you actually kinda needed help to beat them. The game was just usually far too difficult. I remember honestly waiting so long just to find matches or for someone to help me beat certain missions. Then finally you start the mission, and turns out you both don't really even know what you're doing or the person loses connection and you end up failing it. Was extremely frustrating. Genuinely I think ACV/VD was not good. The only thing they got right imo was the customization. Also the emphasis on energy management/tactics was cool but maybe a bit too much.
Anyway so yeah with that all said sadly ACV just really didn't work for me. I desperately wanted to try 4A actually but I don't think I was ever able to find a copy for a good price. Plus the online aspect was something I really wanted to try in an AC game so I just settled on the latest entry at the time. That all said ACV was just really not what I expected and I've heard VD really was not much better either. Those games are said to just play a bit more complex than the other ones in the series. Personally I still haven't tried 4A but I think I'd like it. Always loved how fast paced it looked. Personally I think a middle ground of the older games + V/VD + 4/4A + a little Soulsborne would probably be a good mix. Hopefully they can get it right for everyone with 6.

As an AC fan since AC2 in fifth grade, I have been on and off trying to explain the series to friends who were put off by the seeming complexity of it. Once I was able to help them understand the game, it quickly became one of their favorite games too. It's a wonderful series that has been woefully misunderstood for most of its life. I remember getting ACFA, loving it to death, eagerly reading the EGM review and discovering they gave it a 4/10 because they basically just wanted it to be something that it wasn't.

Regarding the bad: I have the Xbox360 version, and I've never had performance issues.
AC's success has always come from allowing the player to build the best AC _for them._ There is no perfect AC that solves the game, like how other games have 'the best weapon or armor.' I tend to play high-energy and high-mobility across all AC games. So I like to buy the generator and boosters with the highest outputs, and medium-light parts with low energy consumption. Sometimes I might change things up with gatling cannons because you can almost perpetually stun enemy mechs. A friend of mine built an AC that could maintain sustained flight indefinitely, and would shoot down at me from the sky.
Between the two of us, I was the AC veteran. But he figured out quickly if he stayed on the ground I always won because my mobility was best suited to going in circles around my opponents in ground fights. But the heavy energy drain made it very difficult for me to stay airborne, so if he got up in the air he had a better chance of winning.
That's how dynamic Armored Core is.
