      If you spend $50 on a used camera or $10k it don't matter to me. If you can get the shot with that camera then good for you, it may not be the best camera for that shoot. But all that matters is getting the shot for the most part.

      @@mavfan1 It's not really about art, it's about whinging people who try and deter people from using a tool for arbitrary reasons, which has always existed. There's not really an objective 'right way' to do something like photography because of the amount of variables.

      Remember, this is a gear review channel, meaning at least some people are using this to help them decide whether to buy this camera. I have personally relied on Chris and Jordan's reviews (along with others) for camera and lens purchases before.
      I'm all for experimentation, but if you're reviewing a product, you should at least cover the scenarios in which most people would use a camera like that...and then you can experiment.
      The previous review left people with a lot of unanswered questions as to how a camera would perform in typical use cases for medium format. Fortunately, they have dealt with that in this review.

    • @martinarnaud8898
      @martinarnaud8898 5 років тому +10

      Of course, why not ? The remark comes by the fact that street photography is supposed to be done quickly, often in a hurry not to miss the "decisive moment", and it's more difficult with a heavy camera and with a huge 100+megapixels sensor, that does not stand the slightest shaking. So, there is an objective basis to this point, "why would you use a MF camera for street ?". But of course, as this one is not so heavy and is stabilized, why not using it for street ? Furthermore, before digital, photography history is full of photo journalist using medium or even large chambers.

    I hate to be "that guy" because I get just as excited about new gear and insane tech specs as everyone else, but a very sobering reality just came over me as I was watching the studio portion (around the 11:10 mark);
    It's all the same, these days...
    Basically, any professional camera since 2012 can "get the job done" no matter what that job is. I know I just sound like a barrel of cliches and buzz words, right now, but really. There are so many photographers that use 100 year old film cameras and produce beautiful work. There are so many photographers that still shoot film, only. There are so many professional photographers that still use their D700's or 5d Mark ii's. There are professionals who have actually built entire careers with a smartphone.
    Obviously, there will be very clear disadvantages and quality differences in the extreme examples (like comparing a professional camera to a phone). But, I honestly believe that any professional camera from 2012 and on (and a few select cameras from pre-2012) in the hands of any competent photographer will produce results that are indistinguishable from the results we see coming out of the latest and greatest stuff.
    I mean, we have been doing these same "studio environment, portrait of a woman, zoom in to the eyes and marvel at the incredible detail and perfection of the results" thing for over a decade, now. We are so far beyond the point of any of this actually making a difference 99% of the time.
    It also makes me realize just how much trouble camera manufacturers are really in. I mean, it is getting increasingly difficult for them to produce any camera that is worth upgrading to. I think their entire business model is shifting towards non-professionals with G.A.S. out of shear necessity.

      @Art Amazing print quality has been seen for decades, though. A billboard is very low res and low quality, but looks good because we are far away from it. A standard photo we might hang on the wall will also look good, no matter how close we get to it, because its size isn't being pushed to an extreme. You would need to have an especially enormous print and your nose pressed to the photo to start seeing a difference in print quality, in the vast majority of cases.

    • @problemat1que

      Studio usually means F5.6 or F8 for highest resolution. This camera + lens can do it wide open as seen in this video, which has been around for a much shorter time, and certainly hasn't been available with that sharpness at 100 mp.

    • @SkylerKing
      @SkylerKing 5 років тому +3

      @Art Firstly, I was very tempted to not read your comment, at all, since you started off by saying "You don't have to tell me that". As for the rest of it, since it is clear from several of your comments that you prefer to read as little as possible, I will just say; "Gallery quality" prints have existed for nearly as long as cameras have. It's not as if we have been unable to print anything worthy of a gallery up until this point, but now this new camera has solved that problem for us.

      @JoshuaKoerner 5 років тому +15

      I'd say that the biggest struggle i have with my a6300/a7III is not getting out enough. I optimized for the experience I wanted with the way I spent the money, but I don't use it enough any more to justify the money. In other words, I made a mistake that has so far ended up costing me ~ 4-5 grand (with lenses) because at the time I thought it was worth it.
      If you get out and shoot, whatever gets you out and shooting is good enough, the gear itself doesn't matter. Keep the passion. And gear does matter, but having the a6000 puts you ahead of the gear curve by a LOT TBH. Its a great camera I still recommend to my friends, and they've all loved theirs.

    Hi Chris and Jordan, great work as always guys. Just one thing I would like to comment on is at 4:45, what you are doing is not ETTR, but instead protecting highlights... so that is more like ETTL (expose to the left of the histogram). I have been shooting digital for more than 20 years, and in the early days we had to boost the exposure so shadow detail was not completely lost with those early sensors. The log representation of digitized light values (especially with those early sensors) meant that there was less information in the darker range of the image, and we needed to overexpose the shot so there would be more useful detail in the shadows. Newer sensors are much better at recovering this detail without excessive noise or lost information. Hope this makes sense. Wikipedia also has a good article on this and simply states... "ETTR images requiring increased exposure may appear to be overexposed (too bright) when taken and must be correctly processed (normalized) to produce a photograph as envisaged." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exposing_to_the_right Thanks, D.

    I am definitly far away of being close to buy this camera but still I am mesmerized of what Fuji did.
    Not by being perfect, it's more by creating a joy and smile on almost everyones face who is working with it.
    Maybe that should be a major fact of future tests as well.
    But that is just a side note.
    With all the success of smartphones and low budget cameras I hope Fuji sees, thats it worth it to reach for the best to make even the X-Cameras even better as they already are.
    And hopefully the IBIS development will show it's success in smaller bodies as well.
    Hope they getting they Pixel-Shifts Alternatives done as fast as they can.
    Only thing I miss at this point and wanna see in all higher price cameras together with IBIS.

My decision is that i don't need 100MP and although i DO want a camera with a higher resolution than the 1Dx Mark III which I'm more used to shooting with, I will go with the Leica SL2 and attach the Zeiss Otus 85mm with a Sigma adapter. I read and watch most of your reviews which I find to be very thorough and honest, and also very engaging. They don't influence my decisions, because I ultimately take into consideration many other reviewer's feedback, like Dustin Abbott, Jared Polin, Kai Wong and even Ken Rockwell before making a camera purchase. It has taken me the better part of one month to decide that the Leica SL2 is the one for me, even with it's average autofocus system. I can live with that since I mostly shoot outdoor portraits and prefer manual focus.

    Was hoping for your thoughts on how the camera handles video. The detail and field of view looks really good for the second half of the video though.

    Fujifilm is smart enough and decided not to compete with Sony in the full frame market. So Fujifilm preferred the medium format market and made medium format cameras and medium format lenses relatively more affordable to professional and amateur enthusiasts.
    That is great.
    Until 2012 with the introduction of Canon 6D and Nikon 600 full frame cameras were expensive for amateurs. Usually around 3000€. Nowadays the full frame Sony α7 can be bought new for 700€.
    In ten years the price of medium format cameras will be dropped more. For example the second model of Hasselblad X1D is has a significantly lower price than the first one.

      I bought Nikon D700 for 300€ used and it’s a great camera for that money.. much better than canon eos series and nikon d3000 series :)

      Dungeon Master You are right. The digital medium format Pentax 645D and Pentax 645Z had great prices in comparison to Hasselblad and Phase One digital medium format cameras. But that wasn't enough. Both digital Pentax 645 were very bulky and heavy. Very similar to the Pentax 645 film cameras.
      The mirrorless revolution has opened the way to smaller camera bodies. For example the new smallest full frame Sigma fp mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses doesn't even have a mechanical shutter. The medium format Hasselblad X1D doesn't either have a mechanical shutter but its lenses have leaf shutter.
      In the near future even the mechanical shutter will be a thing of the past.

    Look at the beautiful image from 23mm F4, I kind of miss the era of Mamiya7 43mm and Zeiss Biogon 38mm. Unfortunately no one seems to be able to make an adapter to make those gems work on modern mirrorless cameras.

    I’m a little confused about that hybrid evf statement, what about the xpro and x100 lineup? Or does he want a glass evf with a hud inside? 😅
    Considering the evf is replaceable there could be other options one day 👍

    The sharpness as showcased in the portraits (enlarged to 1:1) and the marmot image is very impressive, although it doesn't appear to show quite that well in other images taken with the same lens at sufficiently fast shutter speeds.

      @allthecommonsense 4 роки тому

      Those portraits were heavily retouched, which leads me to believe some sharpening was added in post... which would be a disservice to this video.

    12:00 That resolution tho. You can clearly see and count every individual cell of the strobe grid from the reflection on her eye. And I'm not even watching this in 4K but in 1440p.

    Great review BUT! At 1:38 you show two photos. The one on the right has me interested because I see you took the photo at 1/250th ss and 2500ISO... I dont get it. Why not reduce the shutter speed and lower the ISO for a cleaner image??? What am I missing here?? Can somebody explain?

    great video , my kind of shooting love the high pixel count images , iv had flack for saying so in the past but the dynamic range if like me you dont edit on a computer( in camera only) the d850 is good the fuji is awesome (i dont own one ) but know exactly where your coming from , having unedited photos on big enlargements, bigger the sensor the better they have to have the mp count to match , otherwise your basically just getting more critical depth controll ,

    To really replace my FFrame cameras, it would need to have equal "Black out" time. I get frustrated with the A7R2 when going to preview a image, and zoom in...Feels like a lot of time compared to my Canons. So 3 FPS is not a killer, but the time to playback or zoom..It just needs a stronger processing power. Maybe when they finally get nuclear power to push the processing? For now, I will stick to my Phase One in studio on high end work, and the FFrames for all else. Great review.....You're such the presenter!

    Im shooting with this in the next few weeks, but you talk about 16 BIT in relation to Dynamic Range?... Im maybe missing something here, even although i print my fine art work large... 16 BIT is for colour spectrum, not DR. Somebody please tell me ive missed something...

    Chris and Jordan are a team. I much prefer them to present the stills and video reviews at the same time. Separate titles are fine but release together. There is a GAS mystique for the larger sensor but logic has to be in place too. Use the right gear for the job.

    Viewing this on a 43" 4k monitor, the 2nd half of the video using the Fuji is noticeably softer with lack of detail compared to the GH5. I wonder if the Fuji is doing a lot of line skipping and the video downsampling algorithm isn't up to par? I know this camera isn't considered a "video" camera but I was expecting a little better considering the higher bit-rate and bit-depth. Hmmm

      nope not good enough for instagram. you'll only be able to do that thing where you swipe to view bigger close ups of the model's face like 10 times, which isn't enough. you need at least 47 levels of close ups for instagram or the pic is unusable trash.

    Funny, You always shoot your videos with Panasonic GH5 and during the review of this camera I found myself marvel at the quality of video this little "smallsensor-beast" can produce in skilled hands. It would be interesting to see a video about "bang for the buck for videomakers" to compare the most popular videooptions out there. Is the GH5 still worth getting or have the tide turned? What are the effects on the firmware upgrades from the introduction until now? And are there better options in a similar pricerange? Darn it! And here you are reviewing an exiting mediumformat camera that I will never afford. Sorry, my thoughts took a turn there. Great video as always!
