    I can't even begin to tell you how much I appreciate your taking time to make and post this video! Yesterday, I struggled for over an hour taking apart our Pentair 2000 to clean it and many more hours trying my best to get that lid back on. After about 4 hours of trying, I gave up frustrated beyond belief. Stumbled on your video while looking for a pool service. Got the silicone spray today and had the lid on in under 20 minutes. I can' t thank you enough. You, sir, are a lifesaver!!

    Great videos 👍🏼 on this style filter do you need to recharge it full with water again if the lid isn’t coming on quickly? And when you shut off the timer does the begin to reseed creating suction? Thanks 🙏

    • @SPL
      @SPL  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, to get the lid back on turn on the filter until water spills over. If necessary open the backwash valve to great quicker suction to suck that lid on.

      Would be a great time to go to a cartridge filter. A Pentair Clean & Clear 420. If you like this filter a Pentair 4000 series is a direct update of the 2000 series.

    Hello, cool video. When the rotor valve backwash not working. How to avoid the return line goes back to the pool (dirty water)?? I open already the lid cap and the water is filling up the tank now. Should I turn off the motor?? I don’t want DE dirt in my pool

    • @SPL
      @SPL  4 роки тому

      Next time , remove the pump lid also and let water drain from there. That reduces most of the DE gong back in.

    Question: my client has a very old Pentair 2000 series. Her air pressure release (bleeder)does not turn to let the air out of the filter tank. So what am I to do to get the top lid off? Will the top of the filter shoot (pop) up aggressively and cause bodily harm if close by?

    Been following your de older model. Have had unit for 31 years now with no issues and it’s still running fine. The release valve has been leaking at the hex nut. Do i need a gasket or just tighten? Thank you, John

    • @SPL
      @SPL  Місяць тому

      There is a gasket in there accessed from the lid bottom. If not sealing I've used silicone sealant before.

    Why would the O ring be the issue? Rubbers can shrink in extremes, not expand. Why would the Oring be the reasoning? Great video! you have helped me tackle this beast of a 70sf filter that I cannot even reach the bottom of. Maybe open the bottom valve will help increase the suction buildup? Maybe sand down the paint, and some of that lip? I am not saying it isn't the oring, just why?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  4 роки тому

      Yes, you can fill the tank and then open the backwash to create extra suction. The O-ring needs to be precise for this lid - even a little bit off can make the lid nearly impossible to get on. Thanks for the great feedback.

    • @philindeblanc
      @philindeblanc 4 роки тому

      @@SPL I had 3 vise grips last time, and channel locks, so I fastened the lid with one visegrip locked on, and moved around. PAIN in the butt. This time I just ordered a new Oring, lets see if it makes a difference :-)

    • @philindeblanc
      @philindeblanc 4 роки тому

      @@SPL OK, I ordered a couple Orings, and one was $10 which was slightly thicker, and it took great effort to fit. I replaced it with another make and that went smoother. BUT, the physics of it requires one to put a full coverage amount of lube in the channel the Oring sits, on the Oring, and some on the lip of the lid. Silicon spray was not as easy as the pool-lube. The reason is because the Oring needs to slide back in and fill the empty spaces as you push the lid over it. I used 2 ViseGrips and 2 C clamps. this got it on. The suction actually never occurs to help get the lid on. As the lid cannot form a seal and no suction is happening.

    Today, i cleaned my pool filter by your method. I followed every step and it was awesome. I even used your method when the backwash valve didn't open. However, i have a question. I have noticed that i need to bleed the air continously after cleaning. I even changed the o-ring. Is this normal, Also, when i used your second method of backwasing. some earth went into the valve at the bottom. I couldn't do anything about it. The pool did get a bit cloudy but it cleared. My concern is the bleeding. Is air entering from other places. The lid is sealed very well and clamp is secured very tight. Please give me your suggestions. thanks

    • @SPL
      @SPL  9 років тому

      Sounds like a suction leak from somewhere in the pump area of the pool and air is entering the filter. Could be something as simple as the pump lid o-ring. Do you notice any water leaking at the equipment area?
      DE blow back is normal when the backwash is not working. It settles to the bottom and can simply be vacuumed up.

    Thanks this helped a lot! The house I moved into has this exact filter and it has no labeling on it, so I was able to identify it from your video. One issue I've had is when I backwashed, a small broken o-ring came out. Not sure where it belongs. When I cleaned the filter and pulled out the grids, I saw another small broken o-ring at the bottom. My filter has a small leak from the bottom, and I suspect its because of those o-rings. My question is, do you know where those o-rings go so I can replace them? Thank you!

    • @SPL

      Btw my filter is on concrete floor just a few feet away from my pool, and my backwash lever is frozen, over filling Filter and allowing the remainder DE it is not an option. As it would just pour on to concrete floor.
      I was able to take my wet-vac and had it suck the water as I used my hose to break down the remain DE, this prevented water from entering the manifold bottom and getting back to pool,,
      It left it spotless 😊
      Thanks again

    Question. Great video. Its the only video that shows how to clean your grids without a backwash. I just cleaned mine out yesterday before attempting to clean my very filthy pool. I added the DE and ran it for 24 hrs after shocking it. I notice the pressure meter went up from 150 to 180 so I think I have to clean it out again. Now, do I just take the lid off and run the pump till the water come out clear or should i have to take the grids out again and hose them down? BTW, my pump and filter are under a deck and its a pain to keep taking them out and putting them back in but if i have to, I guess I have no choice. I know im gonna have to do this atleast 2 more times.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  8 років тому

      +Liquor “N” .Poker You can try running it like that but in a traditional backwash the grids fill up with water and push the debris off - if your rotor valve is broken the only thing you can do is take the grids out and hose them off. However if you switch to Perlite filter media it comes off easier than DE so maybe opening the lid and running it will work in your case.

    • @kurlee
      @kurlee 8 років тому

      Awesome. I definitely need to switch to Perlite. Just saw your video on the comparisons of DE and Perlite. Makes alot of sense. Thanks alot.

    Also, how long does it take for DE to be diluted. I have the Pentair 2000 exactly the same one on the video. I put 8 scoops as you mentioned. I put it in the skimmer and got diluted pretty quick. There was no DE from the return. After the pump runing for about 3 hours. This morning i checked the pump basket and it was cloudy water. I am not sure if this normal or is there something wrong. How long does it take to not any cloudy water in the pump basket. thanks

    • @SPL
      @SPL  9 років тому

      If there is air in the line and filter when it turns off some DE will get pulled back into the suction line. It is normal. Water will be pulled down by gravity if there is an air pocket formed in the filter. Nothing to worry about. Once the pool starts the dirty water in the pump basket gets pulled into the filter. Until the DE gets clay like again you will see this.

      Sounds like the pump just lost it's prime. Sometimes when you take the filter apart air gets in the line. Try sticking a garden hose in the skimmer hole and turning it on while holding a rag around it to seal it off. That should fill up the suction pipe. • @SPL
      @SPL  10 років тому

      It could be that the grids are going bad. The fibers could be clogged even after a cleaning. My guess is that the grids are old. As far as the breather tube it just sits in the filter and is connected to the bottom manifold. It is pretty much useless in these filters as it is always caked up with DE. Not sure why they even bother with them. There should be a little cap on the end of that plastic tubing. It probably broke off if you don't see one. I think you can only buy it as a complete set with new tubing.

    This is a pretty easy filter to diagnose. It it either the grids have a hole in them or the bottom manifold is cracked. The last possibility is the rotor valve on the bottom - but this will be DE on starting the pump and it usually stops after a minute or two. If you put a scoop of DE in the skimmer and it shoots right back out it is probably a broken grid or bottom manifold.

      Hi! I also have a Triton 2000 and it is leaking from the bottom. We turned everything off and still leaking. Can you tell me what the possible causes are and if they are DIY fixes? WE're going to try to sell the house as is but need to make it a few months (of course we'll disclose but I think the next owner will likely want to redo everything). Thank you!

      You can add a ball valve to the end and just leave the ball valve shut. If the leak is very small.

    Hello, I cleaned the grids already, now about to put DE into skimmer, when I turn on the system, no water is flowing into the filter tank, in the pvc flowing valve, I see no water movement, the motor is running empty I guess. I hear noise. What to,do?

    Hello, I cleaned my filter a Purex trinton 2000, it seemed like all ok but after done, there is little to no pressure on the valve, and it does not seem like it is shooting out the powder, I vacuumed the pool and it did not shoot the trash I was picking up but after a day of running the filter with only 3 psi there is dirt on the pool, any tips, Please - Thanks

    • @SPL

      +gerardo lopez This filter actually has the top manifold on the bottom. Take out all grids and then pull it off of the bottom and inspect - it should come off easily. See if there are any cracks.

    How do you find out the sq footage to find out how much earth to put back in ?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  4 роки тому +1

      You can measure the grid height. There are only 4 sizes in this filter - 36 sq ft, 48 sq ft, 60 sq ft, 72 sq ft. With 48 and 60 being the most common.

    Haven't heard of that trick before. I will have to try it. I think yours is the original model that didn't have a backwash valve. I have seen some of those before long ago... they used to make filters with a small tank beside the filter to hold all the DE after you backwashed it too. The good old days! Thanks for the tip.

    Great video. I go through this twice a year on my circa 1980 Purex filter. It's good to see I'm doing it just about the same but I got some good tips from this vid. One thing I do is lube the grid pipes so they come out easier. Are all the grids the same size on this unit or is there one smaller grid? I like the silicone spray idea. Less messy than smearing on magic lube.

    Thanks so much for this video! Getting the lid off and on this filter was by far the biggest chore of my pool care...until I found this video. Now I can break down and clean my filter in 30 minutes and my kids aren't learning anymore choice words from dad when the #$&* lid wouldn't come off (or go back on)!
    And your black algae trick with the tri-chlor powder changed my life. My pool is totally under control and looks awesome all the time now. I haven't found a problem that you have not covered yet. Thanks so much for all the effort you put in to making these videos.

    Like everyone else I thank you so much for your videos. I am a new pool owner and I find your videos the best! I have the same problem as Brian S. Seems my new Redline O Ring is leaking. just a little bit from the front and back seams / connector. Any ideas? Happy Holidays and thanks for your help.

      +Bradford Simonsen I suggest changing the o-ring if you haven't and then lubing it up like crazy with "Magic Lube" - found online or at your local pool store. I suspect the lid is slightly warped, as that happens when they get old. With the magic lube it will create a nice tight seal.

    When were these filters made?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 років тому

      Not sure but when I started in 1988 a lot of customers had them and they were already pretty old. The older units also came with a separate smaller tank to catch the D.E. in it with a cloth bag. Very messy. So I would like to say the late 70's early 80's. That was a long time ago. I still have about eight of these on my route.

    I think I talked about this when I was filming the 4000 series filter. I dropped the wing nut once and had to take the filter apart again to get it. Lucky it was a 48 sq ft one. A pool guy suggested I put it on upside down so not to drop it. Since my hands are usually wet & I can be clumsy anyway it was a great idea. I haven't dropped one since - just a poolman trick that I stole ;)

    what is the life span of a DE filter?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  8 років тому +2

      The tank can last a very long time. Newer ones are fiberglass and Pentair just stopped making the Stainless Steel ones last year - although I bet you can still find a new one somewhere. Those tanks lasted decades - 30-40 years. The Fiberglass are good - figure 20 years. The internals wear out so figure grids every 5 years and manifolds every 5-8 years.

    I had developed a leak in the backwash valve (multi-port or crossover valve) so the water constantly dribbled out the pipe. Being a cheap bastard I opted to glue a big PVC ball valve on the backwash drain pipe to stop the leak during normal operation. Then the discovery of a lifetime! When the ball valve is closed and the valve is in "backwash" position the pressure and vacuum for is incredible for popping and re-seating the lid! Save yourself some aggravation and put a ball valve on the backwash outlet pipe and the lid will become the easiest thing you do; not the hardest. You can leave the ball valve closed during normal operation. Just move the lever to backwash mode and hte lid will pop in 10 seconds. Same goes for the seating of the lid... juet run the punp to fill the can till it overflows and shut off the motor just the way you've been doing. This time get your thumb going around the seal and pushing it in as you go. The lid will suck down in 15 - 20 seconds every time. Just remember to open the ball valve when you do an actual backwash.

    Maybe your pump impeller is clogged up. Take the pump lid off and try spinning the impeller. I have a video posted on this in my "Pool Pump Not Working" playlist on my Channel. It is video number four in the playlist.

    You just have to reset the bottom manifold onto the bottom of the tank. It needs to be snug on top the rotor valve part down there. Maybe it isn't set correctly back in your tank. It should sit very snug on the bottom.
