    Wow! Thank you so much for this outstanding video! Most DIY videos, even the best I've seen up till now, don't bother telling you EXTRA things you need to do besides the actual tasks, and most don't tell you WHY you need to do them. This video, hands-down is the most helpful instructional video I've ever seen on this topic! I subscribed and will check out more videos since I can't find ANY help, much less competent help these days and I can do this myself! Thanks so much!

    This was great. It was actually fun. My pool co. wanted about 600.00 to clean the filter and replace just the handle on the vari flo valve that wore out (10 screws and a garsket) - total cost "estimate" only and they always tack extra stuff on. Last time the guy took forever because he claimed it was hard to replace the grids. :( and the clock was ticking. Wish I had found this video before. Thank you so much. I am pretty tired of these people taking advantage of us ladies. Thank you and really enjoyed this.

      Glad you enjoyed it! Well you need to get water back into it somehow. In my case I just let the pool pump do the job and of course left the air release valve on top open to release pressure as is the typical method. Truthfully, I kinda feel stupid for not thinking of the hose fillup method as a way to jump start the process.

      @@MervsServiceSecrets I started out a month ago learning about this satanic filter system...It hadn't been opened in 4 years and had a ratty torn cover, which of course dropped in a truckload of leaves. The skimmer wasnt sucking, and I was losing a ton of water and some moron, (probably Randall) put all the lines above ground at some point. So I got out a shovel and started digging...found all kinds of lines that were filled with clay and of course that's where I was losing a ton of water as it cam shooting out I to the clay making a nice red swampy mess...so I rebuilt the lines..put on shut off valves so I could determine which line was the skimmer line..bought a new filter, broke the pressure relief valve...bought a new one, stripped the belt bolts, re-threaded them..and now I'm tackling algae..so thick you could hide bodies under it. UGH...I am not a pool expert by any means...but I'm trying..maybe we will be swimming by October...

    • @MervsServiceSecrets
      @MervsServiceSecrets  4 роки тому +1

      That there filter needs an exorcism! Remember to check your pressure reading from time to time. When it gets high that' s a sign algae is building up on the panels inside and it's time for backwashing. Also, keep your chlorine tablets replenished, For algae on the pool walls, etc, sweep down real good, then shock the livin' hell out of it with liquid chlorine. Let it run for several hours, then backwash and replenish your DE powerder. And most of all, dont feel bad, You're not alone. I don't know if we are having an unusually hot summer or what, but poor, pitiful Margie's pool is also fighting an algae outbreak. Best of luck. -Merv Himself

      Well, of course if one is torn, it's probably just a matter of time until the others start going bad. But if saving money is the priority, there's certainly nothing wrong with just replacing one. But take a picture, or write down which one you replace so you can keep track of it. That way, in the future when you decide to replace the rest, you'll remember which one is good.

    Hey Merv, Single divorced lady here....I was in the middle of washing out the Pentair filter for my pool....HOW DO I KNOW IF THE MANIFOLD IS CRACKED, I couldn't tell where the crack was on the manifold in your Tube. My pool was spraying DE into my pool so called the pool guy last May to fix it. Last May, my pool guy said my grid had a hole in it and replaced one. Then when the DE KEPT blowing into the water I called again and he came out and found ANOTHER grid with hole...and replaced it. STILL spraying DE in pool, so I called him out again. He then found that the air screen had a hole in it and said he thought he had one in his truck that would work...and came back and installed it. It kept sending DE into the pool for months (5 months). I called and he said that a little DE never hurt anyone. So, when I opened it up to clean it (NOV. 8th,2020) I saw a crushed HUGE screen that he had installed and it was nothing like the original one. So, I ordered a new one for about $24. and await its arrival. Just trying so hard to get those grids back where they belong. Texas has a hard cold winters and I need to do this right.......don't trust the pool guy anymore. I have been cleaning my Pentair filter for 8 years since I bought this house, mind you, I am a 73 year old single lady and I like to believe that I am fairly handy and capable, but your Tube helped me keep going. :-( Thank too much for the help! Your Texas Gal Jeannie

    • @MervsServiceSecrets
      @MervsServiceSecrets  3 роки тому +1

      Seems like it MUST be a torn grid, a CRACKED grid (even if the fabric isn't torn, those grids are just plastic tubes), or a cracked manifold. Usually just replacing one grid is not advised. Always best just to install all new ones. The crack in the manifold might not be apparent when the pressure is off because there is nothing forcing it apart. Of course you can't check it with the pressure ON, but just sayin' . Your pool guy should be able to look at that manifold and inspect it well enough to see if it is cracked. ALSO, old or missing o-rings where the manifold connects to the rest of the "plumbing" could be the culprit. Hate to say it, but maybe it's time for a new pool guy? -Merv Himself

    This video had me smirking all the way through! New homeowner here and trying to survive my first season with a DE filter. How often would you recommend cleaning the filter grids? These were cleaned when the pool was opened, but I'm reading online that I may want to consider spraying these down (not with a power washer) once a month or so. What do you recommend?

    • @MervsServiceSecrets
      @MervsServiceSecrets  4 роки тому +1

      For me, I never remove them unless there is an obvious problem. If they are torn, or if the manifold is damaged, powder will find its way back into the pool like this situation at Margie's house. Under normal operation, when I backwash, that removes the old powder. Then new powder is introduced through the skimmer. That's how I've always done it anyway, and with no issues. Hope this helps. -Merv Himself

      @@MervsServiceSecrets Thanks Merv for the quick response! Yup, that's what I've been doing, backwashing and adding back through the skimmer. I've noticed though since my last backwash, that it seems that the pressure is rising a bit quicker than in previous times...It'll probably be about a week and a half 2 weeks before I have to backwash again instead of a closer to a month. Any suggestions as to what I should look into?

      Just a bit of a follow up and a thanks! So, following the most recent tropical storm on the east coast, and a few days without power. The pool turned green and I figured now would be the best time to finally tear it down and see what was going on inside. What I found were intact filters but massive clumps of DE collected between some of the grids. After a thorough cleaning, and a good wash and a boatload of shock, we are now on the mend but I wouldn’t have felt as confident doing it without the step by step tear down on this video, as I was doing it I couldn’t help but crack a chuckle the entire time from dropping the filter belt to the o ring lube. Does a cracked bottom manifold cause the DE powder to filter back to the pool?
    If so, where is this part available from?

    • @MervsServiceSecrets
      @MervsServiceSecrets  4 роки тому

      What I was referring to in my filter (which may be different than yours) is simply there to help hold the grids in proper formation and keep them aligned with proper space underneath them. However, it's conceivable that if that assembly is cracked, the grids could fall out of alignment, thereby causing an uneven flow which might create a situation where powder flows back into the pool. Hard to tell without being there, but I hope this helps. Here is a link to related products for the FNS 24: amzn.to/2B1YN7x If that doesn't help, maybe try contacting Pentair. Some of these filters are old, but they are workhorses if you can replace the parts.

    HI, you are funny. I have a Pentair 2000 Series, the model number rubbed off, I am trying to find out what size my ) ring is, I measured it and its 57 inches around. Good tip on the grids, OK mine are 24, that means its 48 sq feet. OK, now how much DE I need, I usually put about a large size tub of the sour cream in there. It seems to do its job.

    Merv first off your my type a guy , can I clone you this old retired lady could use a mate like you. All joking aside I purchased a used tear down yourself pool and finally got it back together and pool up and running just in time to close it up for winter coming soon in upstate NY. The model I have is a S7D75 Pentair system 3 De filter. We washed everything out befor reassembled and I read the instruction manual cover to cover. It says 3.6 pounds for precoat. It says to make a sludge up and pour in skimmer. What is a sludge ? Does it want me to mix de powder and some water first before putting in the skimmer. When we open the filter unit after removing pressure I do not se de all over the filter is seems to sit on the bottom and I seem to get De all on my floor of my pool. I have been having to backwash several times not because dirty, but because of the rain too much water in pool and water coming out of skimmer cover because of too much water in pool. The bag of powder I am using looks like your brand. Bought a 25 pound bag fortunately as it takes 3.6 pounds as precoat it says. In your video I see you just pour in the strainer as powder. What makes the powder stick to the fins inside. Ours looks like canvas material inside. I will take all apart probably next week to close for winter. Plan on draining filter and bringing inside for winter. So I will check then for tears or break in manifold. I know just drain plug cap and o rings cost me over 50 bucks so I can imagine what new guts will cost. Is there a good place to check online for parts. Only got to swim twice before cold weather started and that’s going in at 72 degrees. I have heavy duty sun cover but just to cold of nights here. I am a 63 year old single lady without a nice neighbor like yourself. Mine is a mean nosey neighbor, who even knew I accidentally burnt up a pizza box last week. ( I forgot I threw the leftover pizza in the oven so my new pup didn’t grab it off the counter. I preheated oven for a pie ). Opps
    Any help would be appreciated and I loved your humor and subscribed. Thank you for making this video

      Regarding the "sludge", that is actually a less messy way of adding the DE powder to the system, rather than the way I did it. You just mix it with water in a bucket and then pour it in. It's just a matter of neatness to avoid scattered powder that's all. I"'m not intimately familiar with your filter model, but the principle is probably universal for all of them. Inside the "canister" we call a filter are fabric-covered grids and a manifold that helps direct the water through the fabric. When backwashing, the water actually flows THROUGH the gridwork of the DE Panels because it is made up of tubes. So not only is the gridwork a frame for the fabric, but it is also plumbing of sorts. Even if the fabric is in good shape, those tubes can also crack. If the manifold is cracked or the fabric is torn, then powder will get back into the pool. My guess is you need new grids, but do a good visual inspection to verify. And as you are looking at them, think about how the water flows in, around and through them. Something that should be "grabbing" the powder is definitely broken inside that filter, otherwise it would never get back into the pool. Finally, the bottom drain plug: For me, I just backwashed mine to take the water out to a lower level, then sucked out the rest with a wet/dry shop vac. Hope this helps. And good luck with that pesky neighbor. P.S. That there pizza recipe of yours made my mouth water. YUM!

    I have a pentair 2000 series old. The backsplash valve is broken. To clean filter I fill up the tank filter water, turn on the system then after I turn off the system, The DE goes to the pool return line, now it is dirty,, waiting to settle. Any other way to clean my grids, filter??

      I can't claim to be an expert at every filter, but it seems to me you should be able to carefully pull out the entire grid assembly and hose it off real good. Once those are out, there would be some old dirty poweder to hose down inside the tank. Can you perhaps remove that remaining debris with the help of a wet/dry vac? If not, it might be possible to just let her run with the lid off for several minutes. As the tank fills up the water will spill up and over the side and wash out the old powder with it. Kind like the way an overflowing toilet would wash itself out. Of course, this is just my theory. You'll need to decide if this makes sense and works for you. Hope you'll report back and let us know. Good luck in your DIY Adventure. -Merv Himself

      Merv's Service Secrets thanks. I don’t have vacuum, So i will let water run off as much as possible for 3 minutes at least, and some DE will go back to pool.. now, for leftover DE In tank filter underneath how to clean this with no vacuum? Water hose and then Fill up the tank again with pool water, turn on and off the system?? , my pool will be a mess with old DE, will hate this but no other option now?

      @@ChristianYepez Seems to me, if the lid is off and the water is spilling over, it's not going to have the pressure to shoot back into the pool. However, if it was me, I would just buy or borrow a wet/dry vac. That's just me, tho.

      I would let settle. Then SLOWLY and CAREFULLY sweep into the bottom drain.

      Yep. Ive also learned you can install them onto both top n bottom manifolds outside of the filter, then lower the whole assembly into position. Works well.

      Hi Cruzer. The model number of a DE filter is usually dictated by the square footage of the grids. Check out this video and I think you'll find what you need. ua-cam.com/video/I9TBWqRzKTs/v-deo.html

    425 is cheaper than the 650 someone else gave. But still both a rip off. Why not epoxy to fix the crack? Also UA-camr projectfarm shows which epoxy works well.

    Why don’t you just pull the whole grid system out and clean it sitting on the grass instead of hosing it out while it’s still inside the filter assembly and then letting all that crud drain out the bottom and make a mess around all your pool equipment which you’re just gonna have to clean up. Just take the bottom drain out after shutting off the pool equipment and take the drain out let the water drain out of the filter assembly you’ll have to open the pressure gauge on top and it’ll drain out freely then under the strap around the two sections of the filter assembly lift the lid off and pull out the whole grid assembly and one lift set an alarm take the wing nuts off the manifold clean it up and then start pulling loose every grid and hose them off one by one and then put it all back together Put the manifold back on put the windows back on lift the whole assembly and put it back into the bottom half of the filter canister put the lid back on it put the strap back on it tighten it up put the drain plug in at the bottom fire it up it’s a whole lot easier than the way you’re doing it in a whole lot less messy. Just my opinion
