    NOTES:
    Here I show you how to clean a D.E. filter, Pentair 4000 series. The video is a step by step easy to follow. I apologize for the sound during the 3-5 minute mark, my camera seems to drop off in volume a bit, but you can still hear the instructions and follow the visuals.
    Notes: Inspect the grids for any tears, even a small ¼ inch tear will cause the filter to leak DE into the pool.
    If the tank o-ring is stretched out even a little, the lid will not go back on and you will need to replace it (part # O-333-9 O-RING TANK 4000 SERIES).
    D.E. is toxic in its white powder form, so please wear a mask and take precautions not to inhale the dust.

    Technically yes. You can add the whole 10 lbs bag of DE and a lot of pool guys do. I just use the 1 lb scoop and add 10 scoops. That leaves some DE in the bag still in a 10 lb bag. It's debatable which is the correct method. I like to coat the grids with less DE, other guys like more. The filter seems to run more efficiently with 10 - 1 lb scoops of DE. I have been doing it like this for years with no issues. This is what I would recommend.

    If everything looks good then I would wait and do the filter when you want to schedule the 6 month intervals. I do all my filters September and March for weather related reasons mainly, and to get the pool ready just before Summer starts. after you do clean it make a note of where the starting PSI on the gauge is, that way when it goes up by 10 PSI (say from 20 to 30 on the gauge) you will need to backwash it or take it apart if it is at the 6 month mark.

    There are two methods. One is to turn the valve so the spa drain in activated while it is still in pool return mode and you can then brush the dirt into the spa drain. Just be careful not to drain the spa completely down past the drains. The other method is to attach a vacuum to the skimmer and then pull the hose and vacuum over to the spa and drop the vacuum into the spa and then vac it out. If it is getting poor circulation and is cloudy just turn the return to full spa & it will clear up.

    If you backwash and the pressure drops to 20 psi then goes back up to 30 psi within a day, you will need to re-clean your filter. How old are the grids?

  • @richardnewcombe1608

    ..okay, I did something stupid. I didn't tighten the band around the two halves of the filter. Once the filetr loaded up and was charged the weakest point in the 'closed" system was the seal on the filter..it started leaking and blowing de out and then the pressure would rise. Easily fixed but I thought I'd break everything down again and see if I'd missed anything else - it is amazing how much the new grids were covered already with green chit from the pool. Cleaned everything up again and she is working fine! Thanks millions for the help/advice/confidence you give us weekend warrior types that try/need to do this ourselves. Any plans to do automatic cleaner performance tuneup tips? I've got a Polaris 280 that was dragging - I cleaned it up a bit and rotated the tires (which I'm replacing soon anyway) it is amazing how much that helped. I hate to spend $200 bucks on a tuneup kit when simple things like that are all you might need. Anyway, thanks again!

    I think that is a UA-cam Browser problem. It happens sporadically with some videos. It plays fine on my computer. How was my D.E. amount answer for you? This is a great filter by the way, very easy to clean. Pentair just raised the price by $100 since it is selling so well for them. My favorite D.E. filter type.

    The vent tube should stick out over the top manifold (it actually clips to the top manifold). I take it you are making your own tubing. As far as DE 36 sq ft 6 - 1 lb scoops or [8 quarts] . 48 sq ft is 8- 1 lb scoops or [10 quarts], a 60 sq ft is 10- 1 lb scoops or [12 quarts]. You can buy a 1 lb scoop a pool store. Not an exact science since 1 quart = 2 pints = 4 cups which is 32 oz in liquid measurement. A one pound coffee can works great. Been using the 1 lb measurement for years now.

    I've been cleaning the filter myself for a few years. But I decided to look up videos, maybe I can improve something.
    A minor hassle is putting the clamp back on afterwards, because the space is quite tight.
    But the reason why I looked up a video is because I still don't have a strategy to clean the inside of the tank. In the past I would move the manifold up so I can empty the water with a plastic bottle or coffee cup. Today I used 4 rags to soak up the water and got most of the water out. But none of these are good solutions. How do I get the remaining water out when I rinse the tank inside? Does it have to do anything with "backwash". If I move the lever, does it drain the tank? I never moved the lever because it always seemed to be stuck. Today I used a hammer to move the lever.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, that lever can be stiff. I've gotten on my knees and moved it with my foot before also.

      Thanks for asking that! New pool owner here and I was having a issue with the stuck lever as well. Was afraid I was doing something wrong but I guess it’s just stiff, I’ll attempt to pull it a lot harder! Haha

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 років тому

    You should be fine then. A little extra D.E. won't do any damage. A short backwash will correct it if there is any issue. Now you know how much to add the next time so your good ;)

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 років тому

    Well, if the suction is good i.e. you can vacuum with no problem then I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe there was too much DE after all. Backwash it and see if that lowers it and if it stays low. Some filters do run high.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 років тому

    Sounds like your grids are getting old. If they are more than 6 years old they may need to be replaced. Try a good cleaning with the pressure nozzle right up against the grids to see if that helps. But as they get old, they don't clean off well.

  • @MrNick80
    @MrNick80 11 років тому

    So if the suction is still good, you should be able to back wash it and add a few pounds of DE without having to take it apart and clean it, is that right? I moved in to this house a year or so ago and no one knows when the filter was last cleaned, do you think I should just clean it anyway just to be safe even though the pressure seems fine?

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 років тому

    Just add some shock to the water or a gallon or 2 of liquid chlorine, that should oxidize the water and clear it up. You may want to run the pool a bit longer too. If it still looks cloudy a few days later try some SeaKlear Clarifier (A video is in the works).

    Hey bro, thanks for your video! My SMBW 4048 was leaking a little trickle in the last year or so but now it's a bigger trickle. Is there an o-ring below the rotor that needs replacing? Or do I need to replace the entire rotor?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  8 років тому

      +Jeetendra Manghani To get to that o-ring is pretty intensive. If it is just leaking out of the backwash pipe the simplest solution is to get a ball valve and stick it on the end of the backwash pipe and close it. A trickle won't cause any problems with the filtration. Here is an example of what I am suggesting: www.supplyhouse.com/Matco-Norca-770S07-1-1-2-770-PVC-Ball-Valve-Solvent-Ends?gclid=CjwKEAjw7uKwBRDUlJvRo-z6rgMSJACbmSBhTbVOjAuFvHHRCt4IsBA3y1h_8hZOZOvJfQxT7ZvwmBoCoATw_wcB

    !st, thanks very much for the vids, they are very helpful. I have the exact model and size de filter and decided to get a new set of filters. Like chest rockwell, th goes right back up 9very high) within one hour of restarting the pool. I tried to backwash it after reloading the new grid and didn't put any de in at first (I thought I mightve put too much in) and it did the same thing, it went back up to a very high pressure within one hour. I'm thinking about removing and rebuilding the filter set in case I did something stupid. I've dealt with low pressure problems after a thorough celaning but this is a first for high pressure...? Brand new and correct size grids, everything works like textbook for 20-30 minutes and then the pressure rises...? S.O.S. & thks!

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 років тому

      You mentioned in your first comment that there was some green algae in the pool. That will tend to make the pressure rise. You can backwash the filter and add more DE or take it apart and clean it again. Algae will stick to the DE and clog up the grids pretty fast. 30 minutes is not unusual. I have a Polaris playlist where I show how to tune up the 280 - generally it just needs new bearings. You can find that playlist on my Channel.

    Hey thanks for this tutorial! I have a question: Is it common to be a major bear to get the lid back on over the o-ring? I cannot get it on all the way. I have saturated it with silicone spray, I have beat on it with a mallet, I have tried big pliers, nothing can get it closed all the way.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  9 років тому +2

      The o-ring might be bad. Try this. Take the top portion back off. Close the backwash valve. Spray the o-ring with silicone and then sit the top back on but don't try to push it on. Now turn the pump back on and when water starts spilling out over the o-ring bottom half quickly turn the pump off and try to push the top back on as gravity sucks the water back down through the pipes. Should work and there is no danger to self.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 років тому

    How many sq ft was your filter? Half a 25 lb bag means you put in about 12 lbs. If you have a 60 sq ft filter you should be fine. If you have a smaller one, backwash it for 30 seconds and it should be OK.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 років тому

    Sometimes when you clean these filters there is algae and caked on dirt that are coating the grids, especially if there was too little DE in the filter to start with. In that case you should re-clean the filter and spend time with a high pressure nozzle to try and get them really, really clean. If after you do this and the pressure still runs high then your grids are probably old and need replacing. SOMETIMES your filter just runs high too, I have some like that. How low does it usually stay?

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 років тому

    It's just a venting tube to let air out of the filter system.

      I tried using the channel locks, but the black knob was too far gone. It was actually cracked. What would you suggest... A new knob, a multi-tork filter socket tool, a replacement clamping ring perhaps? I am now able to turn it with channel locks directly on the bolt, but that will take some time to do. I'd prefer to go with the option that will make taking this apart easier in the future.

    Hi David. My pool is green from 2 months of not cleaning it. I followed the Step-by-Step video to how to clean a green pool in 48hrs. I have this filter and I was able to clean the grids by hose and believe I put everything back to together again. When I put the top lid on and tighten the belt, water is spilling out of the center when I have the pool running. I didn't do the backwash thing (didn't know how) and I didn't put D.E. in the filter. I did put shock and chlorine in the pool thinking the filter would be OK. Now the filter spills water and shock and chlorine is sitting in my pool. What do you suggest?

      There is not much you can do - If unscrewing the nut and pulling up don't get it off, try wiggling it from side to side to loosen that expanded o-ring. Worst case, remove the filter grids and try to pull that o-ring off with a pair of plyers from the inside of the backwash valve.

      Thank you so much for replying, the thing is that , the new oring is sitting where it belong , when I get the top part and place it on the bottom, I feel like it doesn’t goes all the way down cause of the oring, so it’s not balance right. One side might touch the bottom and the other side might leave a gap.
      When I put the clap, same thing , one side closes good and the other side it’s a little gap because it’s not closing right, can it be the oring is to big? Without any oring it goes down good but I don’t want to risk it and throw a lot of water out.
      Once again thank you so much. Are you from south California? I’m in Moreno Valley, near riverside. I wish I could get your service because you are awesome!

    • @SPL
      @SPL  6 років тому +1

      It could be the wrong o-ring. If it is a Pentair 4000 series the oring should be Pentair 071439 O-Ring Replacement - and lube it up really good. One trick to get it on is with the lid off, turn on the pump and allow the bottom of the tank to fill with water, as it spills over the o-ring turn it off, then put the lid on and move it around and set it on in place. The water in the tank that is draining creates an air pocket that will pull the top lid on securely.

    I cleaned my filter, but now every time I turn it on it blows dirt into the pool. What might be the problem?

    I recently replaced the bottom tank on one of these because the original had cracks. After putting back the bottom manifold, and the center rod, I noticed the rod doesn’t screw in all the way pressing that permanent washer on the rod to the top of the manifold. A slight gap is left. I’m assuming the purpose of that is to hold down the manifold assembly and prevent it from popping up? The reason why I mention this is I notice now that DE shooting back out only when the pump comes on , not when adding DE thru skimmer or when I vacuum any that has recently shot out.
