All those little "ghost" notes in between and the way he kind of swings on the hi-hat gave him a bit of a '60s, Mitch Mitchell type of a groove that's very unique for metal.
True. I tried playing that song, and honestly, the hi-hat pattern is still a bit of a mystery to me and it makes all the difference in the world. Playing it RIGHT is damn tough, and playing it like him is pretty much impossible.
Love how he hits that cymbal like he's swinging a baseball bat at 2:13. Dave Ellefson once called Nick Menza a very manly drummer and its 100% true. Guy was a monster.
just heard the news....farewell Nick, thank you for being part of the soundtrack to my life, and for kicking my ass outta bed almost every morning in high school. awesome memories and we will continue to play your music and pass it down the line. RUST IN PEACE.
If you listened to the guitar track of Holy Wars, you'd think, that sounds cool. You add in the drums and suddenly it becomes epic. It's amazing how much the drums help make the music, despite everyone focusing on the guitarists. The bass too. When the bass kicks in on Holy Wars, it's like a punch in the face along with the drums. Good stuff. RIP Nick!
God damn, this is so satysfying to watch seeing that he uses every single inch of the drum set. I want to start playing drums mainly because of this guy. Rest in paradise Nick.
I'm not a huge Megadeth fan, but seen them twice when they played this. It's gotta be one of the best metal songs of all time. That was just 7 minutes of pulverizing drums, and the whole crew busts it till it's sick. Amazing compilation.
no matter how many times I heard this song/see this vid the restraint he shows during Dave's solo always amazes me. No crashes, no rides just high hat, snare, double kick groove. Taken from us way too soon.
One of the most precise musicians of all time. Let this be known .Nick Menza you we're supposed to be in testament. Dave's lucky to have had you brother,. Rest with Almighty God
Still sad I never got to see this guy live. First Megadeth show I saw was the one right after Dave canned him..I was PISSED. Menza's a legend and this is no exception...he brings the thunder and will always be missed. Rest in peace, Nick.

Nothing better than seeing him wreck the drums with his set!! Even better live, can feel it in your bones. R.I.P. NICK. You definitely will be missed. ;)
Such a cool guy. I got to hang with him backstage in the early 90’s! He gave me a drum stick and a guitar pick with his name on it! Did you know he played guitar too!? I’m sure you did! RIP NICK
Great drumming Nick! 🤘🤘🤘 I believe Dave Mustaine was inspired to write this masterpiece after visiting Northern Ireland during its troubled years. It’s a great song. May peace last in Northern Ireland and beyond & May Dave Mustaine get well soon. I saw Megadeth at Sonisphere in England in 2011 & in Kuala Lumpur 2017. 🤘🤘🤘

The third most replayed moment on this video, really a small blip compared to the opening and the cross-arm-crashes, is the drummers' moment LOL. Somewhere in that little blip, he switched from hitting the drums with the back of his sticks to hitting the drums normally. It's just one of those weird little details we notice!

The best metal line up ever.

Without a doubt!
Yes.
I still give it to the Poland/Samuelson lineup, but that's just my preference.
Rust in Peace Nick

How can a man with such stamina die of heart failure. Unbelievable. RIP Nick Menza
Like clapton says...
Drug abuse sequels, sadly. And like many others, it came down to hunt Nick at a relatively "young" age.

I miss that when he used to have that kit which hung on those metal supports...
wow
Nick actually used the Voelker riser system
It's the main reason to watch him and other people play.
This album is a masterpiece of Thrash Metal ever. RIP Nick

pentagonoenllamas so true, it’s a real talent to get some swing and groove into metal and he did it easily

Bernardo A. García H. Love Nick but gotta disagree, Gar Samuelson.
No question!
Jimmi is better but Nick was great too.
I don't think it really matters. It's all subjective, anyway. Either way, this band has had some really amazing drummers... \m/ (:o)
Agreed!
Nick was an athletic drummer behind the kit. You'd have to be to pull off those arrangements. Such a phenom, and very sad we lost him. R.I.P. Nick.
Still so 🔥🔥🔥 Thanks Nick, you'll never be forgotten.🤘🏾
Thirty years and still, and will always be a MEGADETH Masterpiece.

Couldn't believe it when I heard Nick passed away sometime ago. Menza kicked ass on Holy Wars, my favorite Megadeth track to date.
I am a bass player and somehow I enjoy watching drum videos more than bass videos. Nick Menza's are the peak. R.I.P.

One of the greatest Megadeth songs/albums. You don’t have to be a drummer (and I’m certainly not) to appreciate the talent of this man. RIP Nick
One of my favorite songs, Nick pushed the pace with the "guitar" mentality of a drummer. RIP
