Dirk is an animal on the drums! It's a treat to have such a close up look at what's really going on behind the kit to play this. Something that struck me with Dirk's appearance here as well as Tommy Aldridge's is that these guys bang these songs out night after night and still play with passion, ferocity, and zeal for an instructional video. Thanks to them and Drumeo!
Met Dirk and the band at a VIP event - Dirk has to be the nicest, kindest, most humble guy I’ve had the opportunity to meet. A true class act! Same goes for the rest of the band - great guys!
Okay. Wow. Maybe it's because I'm a drummer, but this version is FIRE. lmao, holy crap. I love how he stands up and points and postures like Nick did, but has great footwork and passion like Gar. My god, that was great to watch. It was 1990 again, and I was in middle school blasting Rust in Peace in my dad's Sony headphones, or on his Cerwyn Vega sub and Infiniti speaker cabinets with nobody home. I'd take off the screens and watch, mesmerized, as the 15" woofers did triplets to Menza's kick patterns, and the subwoofer growled out Ellefson's basslines and Menza's floor toms. God. That was legendary. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Dirk and Drumeo. 🤘
Well, he is playing in one of the biggest and most iconic metal band in the world and the grand majority agrees that he's right at home. There's also a drum technique named after him. He might be quieter or very humble than many but, he's still in Megadeth.
The only drummer since Menza to play this song almost correctly as Nick. Every other guy after Nick played this groove weird. Dirk nailed it. But he also adds his own style. He's great. Perfect fit
This guy is so likeable. I dont watch any other vids like this but ive watched the last two that hes been in as hes so knowledgeable and his enthusiasm just comes across so naturally
Dirk has truly done his homework. He plays these parts flawlessly with power, precision, and heard. All of this while honoring the original performers: Nick and for my money, he totally nail’s Gar’s spirit as well. Cheers.
I must have heard Holy Wars at least 10,000 times in my life, but that was the first time I've ever noticed the kick drum triplets during Dave's solo at the end. Fucking cool as shit!
What a fucking insane song. And I love how Dirk is able to give it some personal flair without overdoing it. I also like that he uses a similar sounding snare and overall kit, it helps to seal the deal and make this sound like golden era Megadeth, with a modern touch. It's incredible that there is still a market for this music and that there are amazing musicians who are willing to dedicate their time to this stuff.
Dirk's cool. He's a great drummer, but even more so, he seems like a great guy. That little tribute to Nick Menza he did, at the 12:20 mark (diehard fans will know), well, in all honesty... almost got me a little emotional! Rust In Peace holds a very dear place in my heart and along with it, Nick Menza's drumming on it. If you read this by any far chance, thank you Dirk! I love all the little extra bass drum notes Dirk is playing towards the end during Mustaine's solo. Nick Menza really was a metal drummer who wasn't scared to get in there and get dirty, plus his creativity was top notch. He had a big kit with big toms he had no trouble getting around. They found lightening in a bottle with rust in peace. Every song on the album was just phenomenal. Probably the greatest metal album of all time. Insane.
@amjan - I think it's much better than Master Of Puppets. I've never been into Metallica's music much. It's boring. And Justice For All was the only album that I liked. I hope the current lineup stays in Megadeth till the band ends. James, Dirk and Kiko are so likeable and nice human beings and music-wise it's obvious how incredible they are. Dave has refreshed the band with their additions.
7 piece Tama w/ Meinl Classic Custom Dark cymbals! Other than the second floor tom being on the hi hat side, this is the exact setup I'm saving for right now! It's nice to hear how such a setup could inevitably sound. So stoked to get my dream kit!

Dirk is Megadeth's only drummer who really got the authentic Menza-feel for this song 99% right (the missing 1% being for those "jazzy" ghost notes Menza used to do on the snare that is ;-) ) Amazing drummer, very musical! Fits this band like a glove! Excellent stuff! 🤘
Well... he gets the hi-hats wrong in the long section after the gallops. Nick left real space in there, creating a swing feel, while Dirk seems to keep a steady pulse with accents. Nobody seems to notice, but it's arguablythe most important part of the drumming in the entire song IMO.
Probably one of the most complex and intricate tracks Megadeth has ever created, easily my favorite song of theirs of all time, let alone on the album.
Dirk is top notch as person and as a drummer. If you compare with Art Cruz's video I felt like his was trying to put himself on top of the song instead on mentioning Chris Adler who actually created the drum part. Dirk who is a fantastic drummer started the song by saying that this is a Nick Menza's song... Great values man, Megadeth is your home for sure. \m/

It must be a pleasure working with someone that is so upbeat, positive and has a great outlook on life. I hope Mustaine never has to replace Dirk. Thank you Mr Adler for introducing Dave to Dirk. Although I was very happy with Kiko, I think we're going to be just as happy with him bowing out and introducing Dave to Teemu. Technically Dirk is way up the top of the ladder when it comes to netal drumming, but the thing that really separates him from most other metal drummers is his deep sense of groove and musicality. His style seems to combine the best aspects of Gar and Nick's drumming
Agree with you completely, Gar had a sick groove and Nicks technical qualities and precise drumming are definitely combined in Dirk. Megadeth has always been Dave and that's not a bad thing, but I hope Dirk is Megadeths last drummer.
Nick Menza's drumming on the first 3 albums he plays in are not only legendary but extremely inspirational in the Thrash Metal scene. He not only brought an incredibly powerful groove and technique to Megadeth songs but had a stage presence on the kit that complimented his style of playing. Definitely a treat to see live and was fortunate to see Megadeth several times with their ironic lineups 🤘🏼❤️
I always loved the drumming on this song. Never gets old. It's not just your typical Thrash Metal artillery, there's a finesse and a certain swing to it that makes the song stand out.

Dirk seems to be the fusion of Gar and Nick in one guy
This song is so fun to play. This whole album is very inspiring ! Dirk you're awesome !
This guy is pure energy, love his style!
I always loved the drumming on this song. Never gets old. It's not just your typical Thrash Metal artillery, there's a finesse and a certain swing to it that makes the song stand out.
I love this guy. I know him for a long time since he was the drummer of my all time favorite band Soilwork. Such an awesome drummer!
Great stuff! And very cool to see a fellow Belgian drummer have all this fun in an iconic metal band.
Miss u Nick!! Dirk u are the chosen one!!
RIP Nick Menza. He died what he loved most. To rock until the lord sees fit to come and get you.
