This is one of the most intriguing finds I've seen. I don't even care if it produces very much. I just think its cool and you are dedicated to finding out.
It used to be that sheepskins we're putting rivers to catch gold and then they were burned and the gold melted. Thus the story of the Golden fleece could have been based on reality.
and wolf skins , with a finer coat , and wolves have a couple of different layers of finer hair underneath , i’ve read a couple of books that recite this happening in siberia and some other baltic countries
After careful study and discussion, we have concluded that your expression on the thumbnail is one of 'mild disinterest'. And by the way, when I installed that Sluice in 1878, it was perfectly legal.
Looks like mercury amalgam on those weird nuggets. Wouldn't surprise me. That's one of the main ways the old timers would process gold quickly. Great find!
I once heard someone say that them working with mercury is the explanation for why so many prospector characters in fiction are depicted as crazy. Heavy metal poisoning can make one act strangely, and over time acting strangely and prospecting became associated with oneanother.
In my mining district in Oregon when we find gold with the white in them , it ended up being mercury! They were using sluce’s in the creek and would dump mercury in them to recover the gold out of them . My guess is quite possible that’s what was going on there !
Yes sir, I've seen that to! I've even found copper plates instead of carpet, in small sections usually lower in the sluice to try and catch smaller pieces. They would from time to time pull them scrape off the amalgamated mercury and add more to it because some alway washed off. They didn't know or care about the dangers of mercury just wanted that yellow suff! The Chinese used copper plates alot to, you could always tell where they mined because they stacked rocks perfectly to make walkways and walls. And found alot of gold after the miners moved on. They got jealous of the Chinese! Alot were murdered and robbed! Sad what happened back then.
@@patdexter9188 There are pictures floating around on the internet of them using dust pans to scoop up the amalgamation out of them , one guy holding one up for a picture big smile on his face wile standing in it and Mercury running down his arms ! Crazy times that’s for sure .
We run into that all the time all over nevada. And chunks of leather they used to squeeze the excess mercury out with. Some creeks are so high still in mercury you can only eat on or two a year. And when you clean out your dredge it will be full to. Alot died from that stuff!
New watcher. I’m absolutely fascinated by mining. As someone previously said he’s an old soul in a new era….but still mining old school. I have never done this but looks fun…hard work. Thanks Dan!!
Cult leader Dan Hurd! I've never watched a video like this, but youtube suggested this to me, and I wanted to see why the sluice was illegal. Prospecting actually looks like some fun, or at least a nice time experiencing the outdoors. OK, now for some reason, I'm wanting to go listen to some Johnny Horton...
Found these types of riffles up on the Germanson ,made of wood or metal, they would place them at the bottom of the river bank ,maybe there was a bit of a draw at the top and then start hydraulicing the bank away towards the sluice. Great information on the history of mining .
Dan please, to avoid that kicking on the grinder use the right side going with rotation ....never use the left side...its potentially dangerous as all hell.. your welcome
Great advise !! I work in a metal trade. I see more cut tendons and destroyed hands and fingers even sliced faces and lips from miss handling cut off wheels on side heads. No joke. Even very experienced handlers can get hurt. Right before it happens you can feel and see it coming.
So true!! I was so busy slobbering all over the beautiful rocks that I did not even notice this. Thank you for pointing this out. You could have saved him from serious injury or worse. Rock on, friend.
Given this is Canadia, I am surprised YOU weren't fined for finding this on you claim. Dan: "See it's all corroded and old" Imperial Canadia Official: "Is this on your claim, yes or no?" Dan: "Well.... yeah, bu..." Imperial Canadia Official: "You are guilty of having an illegal ground sluice on your claim. How would you like to pay your fine?"

If as you said the people who placed that sluice dumped material down that hillside into the river over the sluice, you might want to sample that hillside to see if there is gold in it that never made it to the river. Good luck in part 2.
i always enjoy dan sitting IN front of a mine entrance - especially when he dont know its a mine shaft entrance-- just clear out the rock from the sluice exit

Did you dry, burn, and pan the ashes from the carpet mat yet? I've recovered a small bit gold that was lodged into the fibers doing this. Anytime my mats wore out I would do this for a few grams of fines. I've seen some newbies throw their mats away after "washing" them "clean" and then, with their permission, go through the burn and pan process. Find gold they missed every time. Not much usually, but it adds up!
A few decades ago, the New York Tiffany's store wanted new carpeting. The carpet vendors' quotes offered to PAY for the carpet. Why? The repair shop portion was also carpeted and after years and years of grinding gold and silver, dropped chain bits, etc., those carpets were loaded with recoverable gold, silver, platinum, and precious stones.
@@whiteyholmes No, I have a small incinerator with a blower that burns fairly clean and has a tall flue stack. Generally melts the fines into small beads in the bottom of the curved container I put the carpet in. I even wear a respirator because I'm not ignorant of the possible consequences.
I was really hoping that you had found a old time sluice that has been untouched for 100 or more years, but with it having indoor/outdoor carpet, that isn't going to be the case. Just think of what might have been in there if it had been untouched. Great video Dan Hurd!
Wouldn’t you technically be able to leave the sluice there? Due to it being put there before the law was most likely passed? Cause, taking it out would also technically be modifying the river bed
Last I checked the constitution states that congress and states are both forbidden from applying laws retroactively (ex-post-facto.) so if it was really built prior, it isn’t illegal to be there.

Interesting find. I personally got into prospecting back when GPAA/LDMA were on local channels and then on satellite. I only prospected in my state of Georgia both at outings and by myself on weekends. I sold all of my equipment, the pans, sluice, pump and so on because I moved to the only US state that probably has no gold, Hawaii. Something about getting into warm water and not having damp, cold hobbies was appealing to me! I think the only way to find gold out here in with a metal detector along the popular visitor beaches!
Truth. I found a 3carat diamond engagement ring on a beach before. I handed it too my gf at the time before she broke up with me later that day Gold diggers..😆😆
My question is this, since a lot of the gold in ^this type of environment is going to be very, VERY fine grained, how much of it gets missed and unknowingly dumped back out of the pan along with the rest of the fine grained sediment? Even if you can see a bit of it mixed in with the other sediment in the pan, can you successfully separate and collect it?
When I was a kid in Georgie me and my sister thought we discovered TONS of gold and we brought shirt fulls of it to my mom and she's like "That's not gold, that's called fools gold" we were so disappointed 😞
G'Day from Western Australia 🙂 I already have a bit of the gold fever for mining stock and our lovely Perth Mint gold coins, but damn, watching you channel makes me want to head bush with a good detector and have a good look for some nuggets. If only we had such beautiful scenery, its mostly dry desert, sand flies, and sun burn where I'd be looking. Love your work, 👍
The Goldfields and the gold country around Halls Creek is very scenic. The Aussie outback is a different environment from this, but still worth spending some time in!
Hey Dan! Great project - thanks for letting us tag along! Looking forward to part 2. One benefit of your fall in the creek: you didn’t have to worry about getting your feet wet after that! Hope your posterior is fully recovered! 😄👍

I would have loved kayaking that river back when I was paddling. Looks like a blast and with higher water could be some good rapids. The blue water is unreal. Your enthusiasm made my day. What a great hobby. I hope you find the mother lode.
Woah you can see the amount of scrapping that picker has taken over the yard from all the debris passing by! That’s phenomenal and shows that gold will stay trapped even if things scraped past it at one point or another.
I always thought if this would work, had no idea that people had already tried, but it being illegal explains why you don't see this much anymore lol good to know.

When I was in high school in the late 70's our high school science teacher was into all kinds of things. He told us about a creek nearby (in Pennsylvania) where he would set up a box of some kind and put it in the creek. He said about once a year he would take the box out and then extract whatever he would get. He claimed he would get about an ounce of gold each year. I stumbled across a site that pans for gold in Pa. and it brought back memories of high school. I know the name of the creek, but I just did it for more of satisfying an interest.

I live in a rural town and that actually happened to an older fellow I know. He went out to go fishing. Slipped on some rocks in the river and broke his leg. He was out there for several days yelling for help before someone stumbled upon him and he was flight for life’s out.

I have a K-5 claim on O'Neil creek in Calaveras county California. Old Chinese miners drilled holes in the bed rock itself in a pattern the shape of a 5 on a dice and then ran them offset for 50 to 100 yards. Ran this by the inspectors and they said the holes can be left open after dredging as it does not affect the local trout trying to spawn. Also some very nice brown trout in the river up to 5-6lbs
I’m glad you’re ok after that slip! I find it interesting that there’s artificial turf below that sluice. Depending on they type, it might indicate how old or long that installation has been in-place.
@@emanuelsommar7243 Are you suggesting something like drywall finishers use for "dust-free" sanding? Basically hook your vacuum to a hole in the top of a 5-gal bucket lid with another hole in the lid having a pipe that extends to near the bottom...fill the bucket 1/4-1/3 with water, then use a hose connected to that extension pipe hole to do your actual sucking? That way, everything passes through the water in the bucket while just the air perks up and is discharged.
@@fubisroc9673 No....You need to get a five gallon bucket with a fitting lid. Buy a replacement hose kit from Costco or any other hardware store or just pull it off a dead vacuum drill a hole through the bucket just under the lips at the top to attach hose to bucket. Now the lid. On that you will fit it to a leaf blower so that the air intake side is in the bucket and the blower end is out of the bucket. Basically your laying your leaf blower on it's side on the lid. Cut a hole and attach the lid to the leaf blower with screws and some sort of GOOD caulking .. Ten dollar tubes of good marine mastic type ... So when you start your leaf blower, it is actually sucking air through the bucket and blowing it off to the side. Works Awesome and actually you can use it with water or sand ... Not so great on clumpy clay BUT a little water and scraping makes that easy as well .... The leaf blower is Key.. Roundish to fit lid easier and curved fan blades seem to work best ... Oh and a screen over fan (Inside bucket )... Those smaller rocks shooting out fucking hurts LOL... Check You tube .. There should be something there.. I wish I knew how to send you a pic but man. It's a game changer .
@@emanuelsommar7243 I think we're talking about the same thing. Just instead of a leaf-blower sucking air out of the bucket, I'd use a shop-vac. Much easier to connect hoses to fittings instead of gooping it all up with mastic.

Wow that is so interesting.👍
and wolf skins , with a finer coat , and wolves have a couple of different layers of finer hair underneath , i’ve read a couple of books that recite this happening in siberia and some other baltic countries
@@colim2595 but also being isolated for long periods of time makes people strange.
@@colim2595 I wouldn't be surprised if the solitude wouldn't cause people to develop strange habits or cause them to frequently talk to themselves
Was thinking the same mate see it lots in aus
Those look like the quartz matriz gold usually appears with.
That was my thought also.
Aresnic will also cause this to happen.
Since you already slipped I recommend you cut the rest of the bolt off so it’s flush to the bottom! That could be a really bad injury!
For sure this. I would not want a 13 mil sized hole two inches deep in my back/body in the wilderness.
nothing says fucked like a rusty spike in the foot
@YoungRe3hunnid what the hell is that suppose to mean
New watcher. I’m absolutely fascinated by mining. As someone previously said he’s an old soul in a new era….but still mining old school. I have never done this but looks fun…hard work. Thanks Dan!!
I'd Bet that he Finds a decent amount of GOLD in those RIFFLES!!!

I would investigate the run where the ground sluice was placed. Most likely that was in a gold run/pay streak.

In one scene Dan is complaining about his feet being wet, next scene he has his feet in water up to his ankles lol
Once they're wet you might as well lol.

Dan, you’re looking stronger Buddy and I’m glad to see it!
If as you said the people who placed that sluice dumped material down that hillside into the river over the sluice, you might want to sample that hillside to see if there is gold in it that never made it to the river. Good luck in part 2.

Why are you in China??? What's it really like there? Scares me to even consider living under their godless state, well not scared but repulsive I guess.
Dan, it looks like the nuggets were caught tight in the grating, unable to move and had several years of water running around them depositing that whitish layer.
I was about to say, it looked like corrosion and whatever you call it when the minerals from hard water collect on metals.
The fact that he says "earn your subscription" made me subscribe what a savage🤟

Im gonna have to assume those off color gold nuggets are something called electrum, a combination of gold and silver that is naturally occurring.
could be quartz? Gold and quartz often occur together
Hold on, electrum is a real thing? I though it was just a fantasy metal!
@@grafitorecargado what? no, the first coins ever produced were made of electrum, but people were worried since the weights and densities were not consistent, so it was further refined and reduced into the individual elements of gold and silver.

i heard of the old time miners doing things like that, i even found a type of sluice carved in the bed rock of an old dryed out river bed once, it replenishes with every flood so far,, it only has fine gold no nuggets or pickers ut the way i see it gold is gold and it all adds up when freeze up comes along, i was hoping that would have been packed with gold, cant wait for part 2
This man's spirit is beyond beautiful! Didn't have to convince me to sub. As an explorer/adventurer I can truly appreciate this soul 👏
Not much usually, but it adds up!
whos throwing the mats away? they are usually reused...your full of shyte

I was really hoping that you had found a old time sluice that has been untouched for 100 or more years, but with it having indoor/outdoor carpet, that isn't going to be the case. Just think of what might have been in there if it had been untouched. Great video Dan Hurd!
Those had been around since the 80:s so still 40 years of gathering materials
@@HansFrisk Wow! You put it like that and I feel really old now.🤣🤣
Wouldn’t you technically be able to leave the sluice there? Due to it being put there before the law was most likely passed?
Cause, taking it out would also technically be modifying the river bed
;)

I handed it too my gf at the time before she broke up with me later that day

Old Chinese miners drilled holes in the bed rock itself in a pattern the shape of a 5 on a dice and then ran them offset for 50 to 100 yards. At times like this, wouldn't a small wet/dry vac work well to clean up all the smallest bits of gravel and such to make sure nothing gets left behind?
They actually make gas powered shop vacs for mining.
Make one from a cheap leaf blower, a five gallon bucket and a hose assembly . They work awesome at getting to the bottom of things
Technically by removing that sluice that was there when you found it you were changing the bottom of the water way. Kind of a dambed if you do and dambed if you don't.
