Several years ago I switched to using a square canvas for most of my paintings (36 x 36”) because I realized it helped me tighten up my compositions and throw out of the composition the objects that really weren’t that vital for the scene. Maybe it’s just the way my brain works, but it has really helped in that regard. I love the 20 x 20” for plein air painting also. Thank you for letting us all look over your shoulder as you paint and teach!
Michael,it’s amazing to me how you can pull a beautiful painting out of all the chaos surrounding you and still explain ,and teach us ,your procedure.,I have learned a lot from your videos, thankyou
I think the square format was great selection…. It adds something to the vantage point you had., the looking down on it. Also, I loved the rocks! The colors were beautiful. Sometimes you paint so fast , I wonder how this is ever going to look believable , then it does. Great job.
Been a subscriber for awhile, and I absolutely love watching your videos. I think I am actually going to try a square canvas, thanks for sharing your videos. Keep up the good work 😊.
Michael , see an encapsulated rainbow held high upon the rock 0:48 - 0:52 ( probably longer , as you outline composition and conditions , ( verbal ) , more -
The dimension and lighting in this painting is so captivating! Thank you for sharing your art and your knowledge! Your videos bring me a lot of peace and inspiration.
Good morning Michael. Beautiful! Love that foreground shadow and the large rocks forming a way through to the distance. I agree with making the rock in the foreground a little bigger. Thanks for the experience 👍🏽
I do so love your work. I’m playing with squares a little too. It is different. Personally just on the shadows I fade out the edges and darkness a little more. That was a good move steering away from that hard straight line. Beautiful painting as always!
The roar of the surf certainly added to the sense of urgency to get the block-in established, then move on to shadows and incoming waves. The entire scene is full of action, almost like a three-ring circus, yet you managed to capture it. Thanks again, Michael.
I’ve been incorporating this style of painting into my new book , its a children’s book about life on the marsh grasses , since the first edition was about a spider in a lunch bag then i want it to be about a spider in a storm and draw attention on recycling and endangered environments
