You are so good at figuring out the design and not afraid to change things. I find that to be the hardest part, to slow down and wait for the right time to add the colors.
Cypress trees are definitely challenging to paint. You did a wonderful job with your composition, shapes and design of space. It is a joy to watch you paint and listen to your running commentary.
I love the cypress trees framing the ocean. Great tree angles, and movement through years of exposure to wind. Roots clinging to the rocky cliff edge. I just can't get enough of painting landscapes. Beautiful study, and will make an impressive painting. Possibly even a series of paintings in different weather conditions.
You and your daughter are extremely talented. I love the bond you two have it makes me feel so happy knowing how wholesome your family is, also I love your paintings , god bless ❤️❤️🤗
Your technique is amazing. I would’ve gone to draw the background first (the sea); but now I feel this is a better way to achieve the vision well. Thanks a-lot 🎨 A huge fan!
A sunny day would change everything. I love the misty overcast. Impressive that you can achieve such value shifts in that lighting. I love this composition. I appreciate you sharing your learning and redoing. The end result is beautiful. Thank you, Michael.

Really loved your sketch, you should definitely go back and paint the same composition on a much bigger panel. Btway, your style reminds me very much of our Canadian Group of Seven . Looking forward to your next one!
I love this painting! Your trees always draw me in, the high contrast in the backlighting is so compelling, I also tend to find the moody, overcast days so appealing. I love Cypress tress too. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Trees are definitely a challenging subject matter... As you say carefully composing the design is very important ... I like the area in the lower left ... Looks like a little abstract painting ... would love to see more of these tree paintings
This is such a great painting, Michael! Interesting to watch your process - trying things out to see what works, creating a composition that reads well! Your negative spaces between the trees and the individual branches are perfect!
would love to see you make a video about what art supplies to buy if you are a beginner. i find that im super overwhelmed on where to start and I want to invest in good materials. love this video!!
Very Californian Impressionist. Nice Oriental feeling about it--like Chinese or Japanese landscapes. Great block-in. You had me there. And cypresses are difficult to capture. And capture, you do!
Love Mendocino coastal scenery. The prevailing wind sure makes interesting tree shapes. Your painting is coming together w your eye for symmetry and balance. Love it. I think it looks mission style if that's part of art neuv influences of area.
I really like the sketch-in of the trees. Great shapes! There's so much to learn in this video - adding/subtracting elements that improve the composition, color and value considerations, not progressing until you have a pleasing block in. Thanks Michael!
Very nice scene, sir! Great location! ... Btw. I've noticed that you now like much more to paint nature scenes rather than urban scenes ... I mean the ocean is fantastic, but you made in the past also some amazing urban paintings! Have a good one!
Looks good , I like the various green sea marks. Perhaps more white water would add energy. I still looks unfinished but it is a design study etc. Interesting that you 'skyholed' the ocean sorta. That stops it looking like wallpaper. Well done and thanks for posting.
Thanks for your thoughts Jim. I like everything about the painting except for the foliage. I may need a different ratio canvas to capture more of the top of the trees. It's all about problem solving.
Great painting. New subject with its own challenges. It felt that you were compressing the values with the trees. Its almost trying to show subtle changes in colour without it ending up a kaleidoscope of unnatural colours. I thought you could have retained the rocks in the middle with some white water and spray. Again, enjoyed the 'journey' and how you dealt with some of the issues the subject presented. Brilliant video.
What a beautiful scene to paint. So good to see you and hope the world is being good to you. ❤ (now I will sit back and watch this painting come to life...LOL!)
Really nice work on the trees though I would have liked more info on foliage. Looks like Ultramarine+cad med yellow but what else? Some red to desaturate? The sea is not my fav and I thought a dry brush in spots would have been nice to blur edges. Love your work!
Nice selection and composition of complex elements! I'm unfamiliar with painting in oil and find your videos fascinating. I did have a question about the brushwork you used to render the Monterey Cypress foliage, which to me looks counterintuitive. I know that in ink painting (admittedly a very different medium), unless distant conifers are being depicted the brush movement would be essentially very short, vertical strokes moving horizontally outward to express the mostly vertical energy of the needles even though they are only visible as a foliage mass. Did you avoid this out of stylistic considerations, or would it simply not work in oil?
You can spray ur stainless steel container with easy off o en cleaner an it will clean it like its brand new...u may have to let it sit a few mins an possibly spray twice cause urs is pretty bad...lol...also u can soak ur brushes in Murphys oil soap an it will clean them like new which u probally already know this...happy painting!
SUBLIME !!! I feel like you would resonate with macrobiotic (research of yin/yang balance in every aspect of life). The first book i read about it is : Zen macrobiotics by George Ohsawa. He wrote a lot, it's profound and also very practical ! ☮︎☯︎
Great video and really like how you handled the shadows on the tree trunks. But, the 5 branches in the bottom left quarter that run off the edge, somehow feel unresolved. What purpose do they serve and how do they strengthen the composition? Personally, I think the number could be limited or done away with all together. Really looking forward to seeing revisited one a larger size.
Thanks. Monterey cypress are very challenging to paint/compose. Especially close up. They're beautiful but awkward. If you clean up all the random branches it doesn't capture the true nature of these trees, As I mentioned, I don't have it figured out. To be honest I don't think anyone else does either. I've seen very few good paintings of these trees.
@@chamberlainpaintings I think the painting is great. Those branches just led my eyes off the edge of the painting. For the sake of composition, what lessening the number of branches to two, only one leading off the edge and one shorter with vegetation/leaves on top? Personally I think all trees are a challenge, as are skies and the ocean, all of which you seem to do so effortlessly. And am really looking forward to seeing a bigger version of this painting

Great video. The painting is just lovely, you evoke the drama that's down in the water very beautifully through the frame of the trees. Thank you.
