Plein Air Painting in a Frozen Field

  • Hello there
    Today we are plein air painting in a frozen, muddy field.
    Sounds like fun? - it was! I was using oils on an old canvas with my French easel on this cold and quite windy morning, after a light dusting of snow.
    I am particularly interested in the landscape around Carn Brea which is an ancient Neolithic settlement on a hilltop which dominates the area. This could develop into a long term project which I am quite excited about.
    Hope you enjoy the video - please leave any questions etc in the 'Comments' and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
    Like the video? Why not buy me a coffee?

    Painting in those freezing conditions is dedication to your craft man. Very nice painting, you captured the scene perfectly

    You’re a very resilient fellow Andrew. Most of us would have snapped a picture and (perhaps) added a brief pencil sketch and headed off for that coffee a lot earlier than you. Great effort and nice result! 😊

    I can’t believe how you can create such a beautiful painting from such an apparently ordinary scene!

    Lovely winter landscape of Carn Brea. A nice field of Cornish spring greens. Standing for that length of time in the cold while painting would have been a coffee well deserved . Enjoyed the previous video of Carn Brea. Nice work. Cheers 😊

    Another lovely painting and created under such extreme conditions....truly inspirational! Thank you for sharing and hope the coffee was nice and hot.
    My grand daughter and I went plein air painting this morning.....first time for her....her easel broke and mine fell over breaking part of my pochade box!!
    Cant blame the weather as it is Summer here, and everything is glued together again so we may try again tomorrow 😊 We both felt more enthusiastic again after watching your video. Thanks again, Jan

      Many thanks Jan - sorry to hear about your easel experiences. My French easel is very sturdy but rather heavy to carry around. All the best - Andrew

      Thanks Andrew. My pochade box is very light, from Leon Holmes in Australia. It fixes to a light aluminium easel and I really love it. Anyway, glue is a wonderful thing....all fixed now!!! All the best - Jan

    It wasn't just the texture of the canvas that fought you but also the old painting underneath. But still it turned out nicely and the underlying texture made it almost look like a pastel👍

    A great effort Andrew, I'm far too fond of heat to try that at this time of year. You made a beautiful painting so quickly on an old canvas, bravo!

    Just in from taking a church service and enjoyed the post with a mug of hot tea. You are a brave man and I hope you avoid frostbite or chilblains! A very instructive post about the red to use you medium to give paints fluidity in cold weather. Also interested to hear your reaction to painting on canvas as opposed to a board. On the Mastering Composition course we used the cheaper cotton covered boards for the studies and were encouraged to apply two or three coats of lesson primmer to fill in the 'potholes' (they re everywhere these days!!) of the canvas weave. This reduced the appearance of specks of light which ruined photographs of any work you had done.
    You painting captured there day beautifully, the clarity of the air, the shafts of sunlight and the subtle colours of winter. Recent grey and stormy weather and short days depress everyone BUT there are incandescent winter days where the low sun and winter palette come into their own. I would not miss these days for the world!

      Thank you so much Ian. We can appreciate the beautiful clear sunny days more when we’ve had lots of grey skies.
      All the best

    Time to now hit it with some scratchy palette knife perhaps? Missed seeing Basil but I guess too near a busy road and a bit cold for him. Nice subject. 👍

    Hi Andrew.
    Late in life and with more time, I have picked up a brush. I came across your channel recently and subscribed. I'm slowly going through your library of work and admire your dedication in some challenging conditions. I also enjoy what you do in the studio and especially like what you do with charcoal.
    Now then, I've just watched the latest episode of Landscape Artist of the Year. Did I see you in the opening credits in a small harbour? Are you competing in an upcoming episode?
    If so, did you win? I won't tell anyone, promise. 🤫
    Atb, Paul

      All the best

    Great painting Andrew won from a reused canvas and freezing conditions, very inspirational. Did you prep the suface of the old painting before using it again? I've had trouble mixing my oil paint inthis very cold weather is more medium the answer or is it time for a coffee?😀

    • @AndrewBarrowmanArt
      @AndrewBarrowmanArt  8 місяців тому +1

      Thank you Anita - I think the medium definitely helps (but not too much). I did add some clean linseed oil on the old painting surface to prep it (oiling out)

    Andrew, I'm as mean an old git as you could find if you sent out a search party, but - get yourself some new canvases, lad, for goodness' sake - it's murder trying to reckon with the colours and marks of an old painting, and you'll be lucky if it doesn't crack on you a bit further down the line. Tsk and tush, I say!
    Mind you, if anyone can do it, you can: but I still think you need to flex the credit card in the direction of an art materials supplier.

    • @AndrewBarrowmanArt
      @AndrewBarrowmanArt  8 місяців тому

      Thanks Robert. I don’t do this too often fortunately with old canvases. This might peel off in a few years time but that’s ok - I enjoyed the moment 😃
