- Legendary Dressmaker Thelma Madine has taken on some Gypsy trainees...
Known for creating some of the most elaborate outfits ever (as seen in Big Fat Gypsy Weddings), Thelma is expanding and to give something back to the community that has made her name, she is taking on inexperienced trainee Gypsy and Traveller girls as apprentice dress makers.
In Episode 5:
After pulling the course back from the brink of collapse Thelma now decides that the girls have to start showing her that they can be trusted. With only 5 weeks left of the course and real jobs on offer, the girls have to start proving their worth.
Thelma gives four girls, Shannon, Kathleen, Vicky and Megan the huge opportunity to work on their first wedding dress for a client but two of the girls squander their chance to impress Thelma and are suspended from the course for dangerous behaviour...
17 year old Irish traveller Margaret and 17 English traveller Lilyanne make the big mistake of breaking one of Thelma’s golden rules which results in Thelma losing the sale of a very expensive dress. The girls are sent home without pay but Lilyanne is adamant she’s been mistreated and her mother goes on the war path to the factory to confront up to Thelma.
And after the dramas and tantrums calm down, the girls are given a chance to impress Thelma with their entrepreneurial skills when they are given their own stall to run at the gypsy and traveller Stowe Fair. What could go wrong?

I'd drop Victoria like a hot potato. Not only is she ungrateful, she's the ringleader when it comes to being disruptive. Megan deserves to get a week's boot too for being a follower. Grace should have been picked over Vicky.

I think Grace wasn't picked because Thelma plans on offering her a job already. This was more of a test to see if some of the 'maybes' could step up and show that they've actually learned the skills.

Fair enough to Grace for being upset about not being picked. I was quite shocked she is the hardest working out of all of them.

Been watching her for years and seen the wonderful things she has done for Gipsy community and teaching, helping but the girls are just discouraged to Gipsy community! Disrespectful, sloppy, and few times didn't understand why Thema, put up it them at shops expense and others who truly care!! Am 66young but am in awww! At the energy level she has!! I hope Victoria doesn’t make it, she’s a self centred bully and only works when it suits her. She’s also very immature. Pity traveller girls tend to leave school at the end of primary school as school is not just academic, there’s so many social skills to be learnt thru the high school years as well as vocational subjects. I hope that Thelma’s “experiment “ shows the younger girls that even staying to 15/16 will be of benefit to them , even if they set up their own school on the site so they can educate the girls their way with selective content seeing as one of the reasons for girls leaving early is that there are topics etc that they don’t want taught to their girls and also means girls can be taught separately from boys and in the traveller way.

She's just immature. Its through experiences like school and work that we learn how to grow up and interact with people & she hasn't had that. We're only shown the bits that make good TV, but they must have seen something good in her or she wouldn't have been chosen to work on the wedding dress (even though that went tits up!).

Grace wasn’t picked for the task I feel like because she’s almost 100% guaranteed a spot. I don’t really think they picked the “best” girls for the job, just ones they specifically wanted to test. Grace is by far my favorite, her work ethic is incredible and she’s such a lovely person and beautiful

I feel a bit bad for Megan. She DID join in on serious trouble, but it consistently seemed like she desperately wanted to do well, learn, and get ahead, BUT had the conflicting feelings of not wanting to be left out or badmouthed by her own cousin if she didn't join in on shenanigans Victoria came up with.

The tutor has actually done very well with these girls. I really like how she is understanding of their culture,but also stands her ground.
I loved the idea of Thelma trusting 4 of the girls to complete a client’s dress, however to tell them they were chosen because they were the ‘best’ weren’t the right words to use. All the traveler girls do talk so the ones not chosen will obvs feel that there is favouritism going on.
who gives af if the traveler girls talk - it's not their business. They should be grateful that anyone is giving them an opportunity. If they want to run their uneducated vile mouths then they can do it in their gross little trailer park and have their husbands run their lives. Wonder if Thelma got paid big money to pick the ones that wasn't as dedicated as Grace and Kathleen 🤔 I think by far Grace definitely deserved a place.
I’ve seen so many videos of Gypsies constantly claiming people are so hateful and prejudice towards them but they fail to realize that most of the opinions are due to their poor behavior. Not everyone is like that but it only takes a few bad apples to spoil the bunch. Thelma is giving them an amazing opportunity and putting her reputation on the line and this is how they repay her? My youngest is 11 and acts way more mature than all of them put together. I hope they stop wasting this opportunity because I would’ve loved to be able to do this.
I don’t think that’s fair on Grace tbh. I really do think she has stood out. She is truly lovely and has shown a lot of maturity and dedication

Couldn’t agree more. They have such a tit about us accepting their culture but they don’t accept ours, they cause havoc and have a shitty attitude about everything. They really need to appreciate more what they got from Thelma.
Of course that's how they see it. They'll all uneducated from uneducated people who have very small worlds and never had a chance to see how other people live and know no other culture but their own. This is how they were raised, in a small, closed, society.
I grew up with everyone talking about "pikeys" and "gypos" being really nasty and discriminatory towards travellers. My natural inclination is to stick up for anyone receiving prejudice.
However, I used to work in a bar restaurant and quite often travellers would come in. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt and always served them with a smile. But then the younger kids would literally come behind the bar and try to steal the crisps/sweets/ice-cream. It got so bad we had to padlock everything. The older ones were trying to haggle with me over prices and get really argumentative when you wouldn't give them stuff for a lower cost. Like, dude, it's a set menu what are you talking about.
Never seen anything like it. Now I have to say, where there's smoke there's fire. It's a real shame for the ones who have their shit together, shouldn't all be tarred with the same brush. But when theft is ingrained into your culture, it's a toxic culture.

I'd hire Grace, she comes across very sensible, but not rigid. Very friendly and understands what the whole course is about. Hope she's doing well, wherever she may be. The other blonde girl who is very quiet, she seems like a good person also. The rest... not so sure about !

Victoria seems to be the epitome of what "country" people think of Travellers. I've watched a lot of the shows about travellers and it appears that the producers obviously amp up the theatrics but anyone who wants to be treated with respect should treat others with respect regardless of culture.

I understand the trainees have never been taught how to behave in a workplace environment but it's kinda shocking that they sometimes don't have common sense. Thelma has given them a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to not only teach them valuable sewing lessons but also improve their reading and writing skills and they've repaid her by making her lose clients with their immature behavior.
Liliana or Lillian, whatever her name is, does a lot of shady stuff and then gets so defensive when she is called out for it. It's like you know she did it because she is the one throwing the biggest fit. All of them, except for maybe Grace, are spoiled little brats. Its kinda funny, too because for a bunch of girls raised to be so "submissive", they sure do act the opposite. They really are a bunch of ungrateful hellions. It's really no wonder why outsiders won't give them the time of day. They have zero respect for anyone outside of their families. It's entertaining to watch, you can't deny that but I don't blame Thelma at all for feeling like knocking their heads together from time to time. I wouldn't have the patience or the tolerance for that kind of behavior. Thelma is a Saint.

They are so difficult, due to their upbringing. I had not realised how different they are until this programme. I suppose even at age 3 non gypsy cildren are learning to sit still, listen to a book being read to them, get older, begin learning about the working world, do exams after exams, learn all that self discipline.

I can't get over the lack of maturity and understanding that actions have consequences. That these girls act so much younger than their actual age but also get married so much younger, really concerns me. It is clear they do not have the emotional maturity to succeed in a marriage at this age.
Confidence is built from CREATING something special that you are proud of- it is really almost emotional watching her go through that process

I’ve learned SO much interesting language. But I laughed out loud at “ sweating like a glass blowers Arse” .I still don’t get the dresses, but they are works of art in a way.
Later on I remembered a version of this kind of expression that someone used at school. He was someone gifted with language - he did a BA in English. “ Sweaty as a Turkish wrestler’s jockstrap”….. it conjured up all sorts of hirsute, odiferous, multilayered nastiness. I loved it then, use it carefully now, like very hot chilli pepper. You are welcome to use it too. With caution. Bearing in mind it was first used to my knowledge 50 years ago…..in Scotland. I have BINGE watched Thelma’s struggles with the gypsy girls. I do think that only 20-30% of the problems are Romany related. The rest are from poverty, lack of education and you would probably get the same from 10, 16 yr old girls from a deprived area anywhere. Remember, theirs is one of the last truely patriarchal societies. The girls are just a reflection of the values of that society.

Bridget was too snobby… she was judging all the other gypsies which would be problematic when making dresses for them. Grace with her children has even more motivation to work harder
Bridget did not feel comfortable making the kind of fantastic gypsy clothes that would be required to work there.
If Thelma does this again, I hope she teaches them the bling-bling skills first. Then gets them out in the market stall early in the course. Seems like they really enjoyed making money selling their own creations. Might that experience give them even more motivation to tackle some of the projects that are bigger and more time-consuming?

I've noticed once these girls hit 30 they age massively.
Cause they go hard af starting at 9 and are married and havin kids at 20
They start smoking at 13
Half of them are dead by 40. It's the drinking and smoking since childhood that does it
Growing up if I opened up a car door, banged on a strangers car on the road and my parents found out….I still wouldn’t be able to sit down and I’m in my 50s. Don’t know why anyone would think it’s funny playing in traffic.
Thelma made a very bad business decision allowing early days trainees to work on a wedding dress for goodness sake……let them work on a bridesmaids dress maybe but I wouldn’t let inexperienced workers even touch a bridal gown .
This show the maturity of these children and they are actually getting married and having children of their own. These are uneducated, very spoiled and in an odd way entitled children with no idea what responsibility is other than being a man’s, actually a boy’s toy. Being a boy’s toy is their whole goal in life. The sad thing is, they have a brain, they are not allowed to use, some are pretty on the outside, but few are pretty on the inside. They really are like five to ten year olds trying to play grownup. They really don’t have the maturity of an average teenager.
I am amazed at the transformation of the girls. They are teens so they will fool around for a while but some are starting to take things more seriously. I love you Thelma!

You know how the girls stay at home and clean and look after their siblings, where is their mother? Why isn't she looking after her own kids? She can't be working because the women aren't supposed to work are they so what's she doing that she can't be there to look after her own kids? (I'm talking about all of the mothers in general not just one girl's and I know the girls also look after nieces and nephews but the question remains the same).

If they did that here in states they would have gotten ass kicked and fired and doing that on road to people in car will get you shot. 😒 I got Married at 16 and had family before 18 and then worked and was able to retire at 32 and take care of me and my 4 children by myself bought houses and cars etc so it can be done and you can make life if start young and smart and now remarried to amazing man. I feel bad for everyone around them who has to deal with them. They have to take responsibility for their actions.
Great idea that Thelma came up with to offer and train these young ladies, giving them a trade, allowing them to value themselves to more.

I really admire Thelma for trying to make their lives better. You need a balance of a gracious and disciplinary spirit to manage this.
If they're used to work so hard at home with the almost obsessive cleaning.... I don't get why it is so difficultfor them to work elsewhere?
The high conflict trainees are their own worst enemies. They have no accountability for themselves.
Gypsies gave Gypsies a bad name. I see why most (not all) are unemployable & it's not prejudices. I'm actually glad to know that. If they'll treat Thelma & staff that way imagine what goes on in other places

There is no such thing as men's work or women's work. That dad pisses me off.
