I’m pretty upset that the hideous looking Chargers will replace the P42s because they should be overhauled instead. But, I guess it’s for the better... I will miss them a lot, especially the original P42DC, #1 which I rode on. I hope it isn’t scrapped!
The chargers don't look very good for me. The Genesis locomotives should still stay in service. Freight railroads do use old locomotives on some of their trains, why not Amtrak???
Bruce Tharpe You must not understand GE products. SD40-2s and even some SD45s are still in mainline service today, as are F40PHs. Even some first generation EMDs are still in revenue service. You’d have a tough time trying to find GE’s first generation of locomotives still running, or even at all. There is currently only 1 U25B in the world that is still operational. Meanwhile, most EMDs are still being overhauled while GEs get scrapped (exception being NS, but SD40s have been in service much longer than Dash 9s). Now that’s not to say EMD has the better product because the sales figures prove they don’t, it’s just the way they make locomotives. GE builds their locomotives similar to how Apple makes their products-they make it so it only lasts a certain amount of time before it goes to crap. PCs can be fixed and rebuilt indefinitely, unlike Macs. Apple seems to assume that by the time their products crap out, you’d want to buy a new one. This isn’t always the case. Overall point is, you can’t rebuild the Genesis units. They’ve already tried that, and they’re past that point. The Charger is a proven locomotive, and it’s hard to argue with a higher top speed and AC traction.
Darn, the P42s are being retired already!? Jesus. Those locomotives are very awesome and I love their engine start! At least the retirement process will be slow and steady so we can enjoy every bit of their presence. Also I never clicked on a Train Talk video this fast! Hope you do more of this Mike! Nice video!

kbtr234 Except that it wouldn’t be. The GEVO-12 doesn’t fit in the Genesis, and the car body is basically the same thing as the frame. That means if you wanted to modify the car body to make the GEVO-12 fit, you’d basically have to make a brand new locomotive, as you would need a brand new frame, cab, etc. Now I know what you’re thinking, “it has 12 cylinders lol this guy is retarded I know everything” but the issue is height, not length. Hey Mike this is probably Train Talk at it’s absolute best. In fact here are my top 5 favorite Amtrak locomotives. 5. SC-44. 4. P32-BWH Dash 8. 3. AEM-7. 2. ACS-64. 1. A tie between the Genesis and the F40PH. Well 2 years left and then Amtrak will start taking delivery of their 75 SC-44 Chargers that will be used on long-distance trains such as the Silver Service, Crescent, California Zephyr, Southwest Chief, Coast Starlight and Palmetto. They are also going to be used on the Auto Train.
Exactly, their lack of front porches and poor reverse visibility means that any 4-axle Diesel locomotive with a full-width cowl body is NOT suitable for freight service. Heck, in 1997, UP leased 60 F40’s from Amtrak due to a power shortage.

Metro North, LIRR, and Amtrak are working on an RFP for new Dual Mode locos that will likely replace all of the P32AC-DMs and DM30ACs. This contract has not been awarded yet (since the three parties have had some issues), but Siemens has a good shot at winning it. Metro-North is also planning to buy 15 regular Chargers for the Port Jervis line.
They won't. The electronics are too expensive. The circuit boards are nearly $5000 each because they're custom-built for the Genesis series, and because GE holds exclusive rights to them. Once these leave Amtrak they're pretty much done as far as revenue service is concerned, because their supply of spare electronics is running out and it's not worth it to order another bulk shipment when these units are already on their way out.
PG13hockeyman The issue with that is they don’t accelerate quickly enough. Add to the fact that they’re GEs at the end of their lives, and there is little hope of them in commuter service.
Some commuter trains already use genesis locomotives. They include the new Jersey transit, the metro north, and the Connecticut department of transportation commuter trains.
Norton Hatfield NJT Transit has gotten rid of theirs and Metro North only uses them because they have to, as required by the 3rd rail. ConnDot uses them because they have to, as they don’t have any money.

Great video! I heard Metro North already ordered SC-44 chargers, but to replace it's F40PHs that operate for/in conjunction with NJ transit on Port Jervis line (Hoboken - Suffern - Port Jervis). And I imagine since Metra is pretty desperate for motive power they're going to acquire a bulk of used Genesis locomotives when they become available.
No, instead they are purchasing similar HEP equipped SD70MAC’s that the Alaska Railroad uses. The differences between the two are the fact that the Alaska units only comply with EPA Tier 1 standards, while the Metra ones will be remanufactured to meet Tier III standards.
Tbh, I like the GE Genesis design as well as the horn, Nathan K5LA. Oftentimes I get confused on which ones are the P42DC and the P32DC since they look almost alike.
1:30 nice catch of 184 before it became the Phase IV unit! 5:29 nice catch of numbers 45 and 46 working together! 6:05 but VIA rail still uses F40s! Maybe Amtrak will seel most of its P42s to VIA rail or maybe a private car pooling company (they use P42s a lot and might benefit if they bought their own to help on excursions) 7:47 Amtrak should buy new single level coaches since most of their single level coaches are 30-40 years old! (or maybe turning the Acela cars into diesel and ACS64-hauled sets) As a kid, I grew up watching VHS tapes and DVDs with scenes of Phase III and IV P40s and P42s working alongside F40PHs, but those were all gone, as every Amtrak train I saw was with a phase V P42. I really like their prime mover noises (especially the "woosh" sound), their steel bells, and the sloping blue on the top. The P42s I saw the most were 58, 54, 144, and 69. The Sc44s do look cool, but I do miss seeing and hearing P42DCs as they arrive and leave Kansas City with the Missuri River runner (I have rarely seen the southwest chief, I plan to see it a lot from this summer onwards)
There is one route where these trains are permitted to go 110 mph that I am aware of. It is the Pennsylvanian where they recently (as of two years ago) they were put in to replace the Dash-8s that were in use. Since that track between Philadelphia and Harrisburg is rated for 110 mph, it is able to go and achieve top speed. I am not aware of it going that fast anywhere else (maybe Empire)?
@@FFred-us9tw Thanks, thought upstate NY might be able to do it as well - forgot about the upgraded track between Detroit and Chicago - I took that train many years ago when it was first upgraded in the early 1990s.
The Genesis is my all time favorite locomotive in the world. I can't believe it's already been so long since they started running. I wish they would put the new Charger locomotives in a Genesis body, that would be the perfect locomotive. The Genesis will surely be missed by a lot of rail fans. I am not a huge rail fan, I prefer aviation but for some reason in 2016 I started getting interested in trains and I have been watching video after video of trains and I started reading a lot about trains. In some weird way I became obsessed with locomotives, especially diesel electric locomotives. I guess I just love large transportation machines. Anyone else here interested in aviation also?.
Cameron .S. Big difference in how they were made. Back then, EMD made good products that lasted and didn’t suck. Not so much anymore. GE products just don’t last a long time period. Good products while they last, but once a GE product starts to go, time for a new one.
Like Mike said in the video, a this stage, Amtrak have purchased 75 Chargers to replace the P42s on long distance trains. As for the Dash 8s, they will be retired eventually, but when is unknown by me.
Santa Fe Unit 668 I’d say the Dash 8s have a little ways to go. They have a lot less miles on them than the Genesis units do. They’ve also proven useful as switchers, MOW units (ballast trains), and backup power.
I wouldn’t be surprised if a Dash 8 is assisting an SC-44 on the Coast Starlight. Ever since they made their debuts in 1991, Amtrak loves to use their Dash 8’s on the Coast Starlight a lot, even with the Gennies. Here’s what surprises me, though. Amtrak’s Dash 8’s are underpowered at 3,200 horsepower (minus 800kw eaten up for HEP control) and yet a pair of them could power the Starlight with no interruptions.
The genesis locomotives got the name genesis from a video game console that came out the same time as the first genesis series locomotives, aka the Sega genesis console.
It seems to me that Siemens are taking over pretty much everything these days. Firstly, their ACS-64 locomotives took over the AEM-7s on the NEC. Then, their SC-44 Chargers took over the F59PHIs on the Pacific Surfliner and Cascades services. And now these Chargers are set to replace the P42s. And it won't end there; loads more railroads will most likely replace their rolling stock with Siemens stuff. These Genesis engines are good locomotives, so all I am hopeful that the ones that will still be useable will have an afterlife.
The European locomotive manufacturers are now increasing their presence on the North American side of things. Even VIA Rail Canada has ordered new Siemens trainsets.
While i do love all trains including the genesis locomotives, they are my least favorite of all locomotives except for the heritage units and Via and Metro North engines, one reason is the paint scheme on most of them is very uninspiring, two they are showing their age and I'm ready for replacements, I'm not as disappointed with them being replaced as many others, honestly I'm a fan of Siemens and other European locomotive companies and love their designs, the Genesis served their time well on the rails, but now they've nearly reached the end of the line and its time for them to go to museums and tourist railroads, as usual, fantastic video!
To further clarify about the GE P32AC-DM locomotives... Metro North operates them out of Grand Central (though not on the fully electrified New Haven Line) and Amtrak likewise between Penn Station and Albany due to restrictions on diesel exhaust in those underground Manhattan stations. As such, those lines will always require dual mode locomotives, with minor differences in their 3rd rail pickup gear to account for over vs under-running etc depending on the line.
Amtrak's 50th anniversary is in 2021 (when the first of the new LD Chargers is expected to arrive), so special paint schemes are possible. We'll just have to wait and see...
Not for a while. The overhaul the F40s received was meant to extend their lifespans by about 15 to 20 years. Going off of that, it is reasonable to assume they will at the very least make it into the late 2020s.
I like your video. It was good. But I don't want the Amtrak P40DCs and P42DCs being replaced. I have some in Ho scale. It'll break my heart if they're replaced
Do you have a video where the loco provides HEP power? Here in Tunisia most passenger traibs use a separate genset so they can be tracted even by freight locos but this is not very efficient I think HEP from the loco is better do you agree?
If they're gonna replace all their P40DC's and P42DC's what are they gonna do with the one's that have heritage paint scheme's? Are they gonna keep those running or are they also gonna retire them? They better not retire them as well.
Cade Spencer And why would they do that? There’s no need to do so when they don’t need more Cabbages and could very easily reactivate a Metroliner cabcar for much cheaper.
The GE Genesis also called the Genset is the face of Amtrak. these locomotives replaced the EMD F40PH and old Santa Fe GE P30 Pooches which were starting show their age and were having mechanical problems. Amtrak wanted an aerodynamic locomotive and they turned to GE to make it at their Erie plant the result was the Genset and since 95 these engines are on the head of every train. Because of accidents some of these engines are being taken out of service and some are being sold to commutator but most are still kept. On regionals these locomotives have been replaced by the Siemens Charger and the ACS 64.
Genset? I don’t think that’s correct. Genset refers to a locomotive with one or multiple generator sets (hence the name Genset) that can turn on and off at any time to save fuel/respond to an increase in load. Additionally, P40s were never really on Northeast Regionals (with a few exceptions), so unless you’re referring to regional routes, I don’t know where you’re getting that from. Genesis units have not always been the head of every train. Dash 8s and other power has often led trains instead.
They should sell the p42s to Nj transit for the diesel lines like Rarotonga valley or passic valley lines to replace the gp40s and to put the alp-45 to better use on dual mode routes like Montclair booton and Morristown line
Knew it was going to be on the Genesis, what's next? The Dash 8-32BWH? Edit: I don't think the Siemens Charger will replace the P32AC-DM's because they can't run on electric only into NYC tunnels
Hey Mike, I wonder if you can do a Train Talk video on the Iowa Interstate Railroad featuring QJ steam locomotives, and excursion trips. Would you like to make a video on that?

Great video!
I heard Metro North already ordered SC-44 chargers, but to replace it's F40PHs that operate for/in conjunction with NJ transit on Port Jervis line (Hoboken - Suffern - Port Jervis). And I imagine since Metra is pretty desperate for motive power they're going to acquire a bulk of used Genesis locomotives when they become available.
Metra is ordering SD70ace with head end power rebuilt from freight engines.
No, instead they are purchasing similar HEP equipped SD70MAC’s that the Alaska Railroad uses. The differences between the two are the fact that the Alaska units only comply with EPA Tier 1 standards, while the Metra ones will be remanufactured to meet Tier III standards.
Fantastic video dear Friend love it. God bless you. Happy Day
7:35 Viel is purchasing full train sets built by Siemens
Tbh, I like the GE Genesis design as well as the horn, Nathan K5LA. Oftentimes I get confused on which ones are the P42DC and the P32DC since they look almost alike.
P32AC-DM*
I really love the horn on these engines, its sad that they are being replaced already
I'm going to miss those Amtrak P42 and P40. By the way Congratulations 🎉on getting to 400 Subscribers you earned it 🙂
I'd love to see Trinity Railway Express in Dallas TX buy a few secondhand P42DC's and paint them into TRE colors, that would be amazing :D
3:58-MY FAVORITE CLIP EVER, GROVER BEACH CA!!!!!!!!!!!!
1:30 nice catch of 184 before it became the Phase IV unit!
5:29 nice catch of numbers 45 and 46 working together!
6:05 but VIA rail still uses F40s! Maybe Amtrak will seel most of its P42s to VIA rail or maybe a private car pooling company (they use P42s a lot and might benefit if they bought their own to help on excursions)
7:47 Amtrak should buy new single level coaches since most of their single level coaches are 30-40 years old! (or maybe turning the Acela cars into diesel and ACS64-hauled sets)
As a kid, I grew up watching VHS tapes and DVDs with scenes of Phase III and IV P40s and P42s working alongside F40PHs, but those were all gone, as every Amtrak train I saw was with a phase V P42.
They also run 110 in upstate New York and all over Michigan and Illinois on the wolverine service.
@@FFred-us9tw Thanks, thought upstate NY might be able to do it as well - forgot about the upgraded track between Detroit and Chicago - I took that train many years ago when it was first upgraded in the early 1990s.
Very interesting and professionally made. Keep up the great work. 👏👏
My favorite Amtrak locomotive and amazing Vid
What year will they retire? Cause I’m gonna get little KATO scale locomotives of them, as the history of the trains
Will the chargers be used on long distance trains?
I think so. They are already giving the Chargers the phase 5b paint scheme.
The 75 new SC-44s ordered last year (which should arrive between 2021 and 2024) are intended for LD use.
@@m636rf9 wow
@@amtrakisveryepic cool
Its going to be cool to see the sc44 chargers in phase 5 paint

Hey Mike, guess what. CSX has 2 new heritage units #911 and 1776. Kansas City Southern has a veterans unit. Would you like to see them, Mike?
It's interesting and awesome that VIA rail Canada's F40PH-2D fleet is out servicing the P42 fleet
Cameron .S. Big difference in how they were made. Back then, EMD made good products that lasted and didn’t suck. Not so much anymore. GE products just don’t last a long time period. Good products while they last, but once a GE product starts to go, time for a new one.
I saw the NJT P40 at Beech Grove.
What will be replacements for Amtrak Long Distance Trains? Will the Dash 8s also be retired?
Like Mike said in the video, a this stage, Amtrak have purchased 75 Chargers to replace the P42s on long distance trains. As for the Dash 8s, they will be retired eventually, but when is unknown by me.
@@thomaspalmer1019 alright
Santa Fe Unit 668 I’d say the Dash 8s have a little ways to go. They have a lot less miles on them than the Genesis units do. They’ve also proven useful as switchers, MOW units (ballast trains), and backup power.
Blackbird Gaming interesting
Thomas Palmer They’ve been doing it for a long time, ever since they started working with EMD on their electrical systems.
Glad to see Train Talk is back. Great video.... I enjoyed it.
Please don't scrap these precious engines, they deserve a second home
If they were sold to other operators, where would they go?
Excellent presentation. Enjoyed it.
Excellent video!
Great videy both you and Amtrakguy365 has made great videos discussing the Genesis locomotives
I hope they don't get replaced because I love them localmotives I think they are great my favorite
Great video had fun watching it
While i do love all trains including the genesis locomotives, they are my least favorite of all locomotives except for the heritage units and Via and Metro North engines, one reason is the paint scheme on most of them is very uninspiring, two they are showing their age and I'm ready for replacements, I'm not as disappointed with them being replaced as many others, honestly I'm a fan of Siemens and other European locomotive companies and love their designs, the Genesis served their time well on the rails, but now they've nearly reached the end of the line and its time for them to go to museums and tourist railroads, as usual, fantastic video!
They might be the first computerized locomotives to be preserved.
If Amtrak gives the new Chargers a different paint scheme, can they be heritage units too?
Amtrak's 50th anniversary is in 2021 (when the first of the new LD Chargers is expected to arrive), so special paint schemes are possible. We'll just have to wait and see...
Dose anyone know when viarail will retires its f40phs?
There my favorite locomotives
Not for a while. The overhaul the F40s received was meant to extend their lifespans by about 15 to 20 years. Going off of that, it is reasonable to assume they will at the very least make it into the late 2020s.
I wish I got to ride one before they will retire.
Were the Alco PA's, F's,& E's the same height as the Genesis locomotives?
I'm gonna miss these locos when there retired RIP GE genesis locomotives 1993-2020
Amtrak is not retiring their GE Genesis Locomotives their rebuilding them
The CT DOT P40's look like they've been through hell and back.
They may look bad now, but once they are overhauled they'll look as good as new.
You should do a train talk on diesel engine bells and steam engine bells
I like your video. It was good. But I don't want the Amtrak P40DCs and P42DCs being replaced. I have some in Ho scale. It'll break my heart if they're replaced
Very unlikely to get replaced because the east are still use p42’s plus even if they do it will most likely get sold to other railways
Nate Jackson Can’t stop progress, it is what it is.
Welcome Back Train Talk, Did You Miss Us? Oh, Kev P Misses You. :-)
1:32 184 before its phase 4 paint, wow. Btw, good video!
Great video Mike! Also my friend told me the MTA decided not to get Sc-44
I guess they are good with their EMD’s and GE P32AC-DM’s and decide to just rebuild them instead.
They actually did decide to get dual mode chargers to replace the aging P32AC-DMs and DM30ACs.
Thanks Mike! Very interresting vidéofor a french man like me! I learn a lot about theses great locomotives.
very informative video, thanks for sharing 👏🙏👍
Hi CoasterFan2105 i got a question
Will you ever make a series caled engines of coaster?
They should convert some of the oldest of these onto cabbage cars like the f40
Cade Spencer And why would they do that? There’s no need to do so when they don’t need more Cabbages and could very easily reactivate a Metroliner cabcar for much cheaper.
That and cutting into the sides of the monocoque chassis would compromise its structure unlike the F40's cowl body.
What they are being retired oh no. First the F59PHI Amtrak locomotives left, and now the P42s what.
Informative, well done Mike.
Corrections: The P30CH was problematic, retired, and scrapped, while the F40PH was aging and tired around the time the Genesis locomotives arrived.
Dash 8s and other power has often led trains instead.
can these units be sold for freight service?
No
They should sell the p42s to Nj transit for the diesel lines like Rarotonga valley or passic valley lines to replace the gp40s and to put the alp-45 to better use on dual mode routes like Montclair booton and Morristown line
So now Amtrak is rebuilding some of the p42 into P42C. Can you explain the reasoning behind it?
congrats on 400k btw
Yes!
“F40PH’s Never Get Old, they get wise.”
Knew it was going to be on the Genesis, what's next? The Dash 8-32BWH?
Edit: I don't think the Siemens Charger will replace the P32AC-DM's because they can't run on electric only into NYC tunnels
Probably since they are older than the genesis
Siemens will be producing a Charger dual mode variant for the following railroads Amtrak, Lirr, Metro North.
What about Talgo? Here in Oregon, I’ll see a mix of Talgo and SC’s
Hey Mike, I wonder if you can do a Train Talk video on the Iowa Interstate Railroad featuring QJ steam locomotives, and excursion trips. Would you like to make a video on that?
Great video. I think the Genesis locomotives passed this chapter of Amtrak with flying colors! 🎉
Can you please do a epoisde of train talk about the Caltrain line
