The F59PHI is definitely my favorite diesel locomotive. I really like the shape of them as well as the fact they look good in so many liveries. I also like them because I grew up around Los Angeles so I always saw them on both the Pacific Surfliner and metrolink when I was a kid.
Thank you, Mike! I’ve always loved the f59phi. Especially the 15 surfliner engines. They look so sleek and nice in the blue and silver. Especially they way the blue lines wrap around the headlights. They all look fantastic. I am with these trains 24-7. I live in lake forest and am 500ft from the tracks. I see them go by out my window. Then there’s my work which is in Dana Point. My stall (I’m a autobody tech) is about 150 ft from the tracks, on a calm day a can feel the breeze of them go by, and catch the smell. I’m going to cry when these engines leave, probably literally. 453, 455, and 459 are my 3 favorites. Oh how I wish a could purchase one someday. I’m riding from Irvine to San Diego tomorrow morning and back. I’m down for a surfliner/coaster club if anyone else is? Or maybe something already exists? -Zac
Thanks, Zac! The Surfliner paint scheme has long been one of my favorites, and the F59's sleek look really makes the trains look nice. I don't know of a Surfliner or Coaster club, but that would be neat if one existed. I'd join!
CoasterFan2105 Cool! Well Oceanside was the last stop going south today due to track work. However I good a cool catch. Right after Oceanside few miles up a northbound surfliner broke down, they were 1 hour ahead of us. We passed them on our way down. It was engine 454, and my train was engine 453. When we turned around we met them and coupled up! 453 pushed our normal 6 surfliner cars AND pulled the other train with 6 cars and engine 454 in the back in neutral! I can’t believe she did it. I got a really lame video with my phone but I’ll upload it!
Loved it!! The F59PHs and F59PHIs are locomotives that will always be in my top 3 favorite locomotives. Edit: Amtrak California F59PHIs have really nice horns.
I heard from a guy at Santa Fe that The p42 will stop going to San on June 2018 and the f59's will stop running service in late October and early November 2018
A thousand thanks for this series of videos excellent in all facets - research, photography, narration and historically enlightening, by the way, have I mentioned the interesting camera angles
Thank you for taking the time to produce this very informative video -- I am getting old since I remember when the F59PH and F59PHI were the new kids on the block..
Awesome! In 2011 I rode the Surfliner from San Diego to San Juan Capistrano and back, the F59PHI is a pretty cool engine! Excited to see what the Chargers can do!
Awesome video! Loved the references to Toronto's GO Transit! I actually have some recent footage of an F59PH still in service at GO Transit... I believe the number was 553 or 557.
When I was little, I used to to going to the Alviso County park (First Clip of the video). I wish I still lived there so I could see those Aces and Amtrak California f59phi’s. I still visit there but all I see are sc-44 chargers. (I still love sc-44s). Thank you Mike.
The EMD F59PH is essentially just a shorter version of the EMD SDP40F, but instead of C-C wheel arrangement, it has the B-B wheel arrangement, and it also doesn't have the same issues the SDP40F had. For example, the SDP40F were equipped with Steam Generators for older inherited equipment, and also the tracks weren't maintained well then which led to accidents. If only the SDP40F's were equipped with Head End power generators, then they could have been the SDP40FH, and more of them could have been preserved.
can't believe it... I live near the surfliner railroad in California, all F59PHI's are getting replaced with the SC-44! I don't want to see those everyday, I would rather see both :(
To us in the UK, the F59PHI pleasing to look at. We like our locos sculptured. One question; why are American locomotives so tall? Is it just historic convention, or something else?
There is no question that a lot of the passenger locomotives in particular are very tall and the F59 is one of (if not the) tallest. I think part of the reason for the F59PHI being so tall is so that it matches the height of the bilevel Superliner and Surfliner cars it pulls. Amtrak's P42DC locomotives aren't nearly as tall.
Passenger locomotives are usually built to make full use of available clearance (UK: loading gauge), especially in the US, since they are required by law to have a very strong body. By making them taller, some parts can be distributed vertically (such as dynamic brake located right over the engine) and the locomotive can be made shorter (hence, lighter). The F59PH/F59PHI is designed to run in all passenger lines except for a few old tunnels in the Northeast, especially New York. That allows it to be that tall. That allows it to have a body-on-frame construction that makes it much easier to service and repair (for a diesel), and also allows it to have a second diesel engine just to power the HEP (UK:ETS). The GE Genesis family, on the other hand, is designed to run on ALL Amtrak lines, so it has a lower roof. But its design required some compromises like a monocoque body, that makes it lighter for the same length (so it can be longer) but it's more difficult to service and repair.
Taller locomotives are by design generally safer in the event of an accident as well. Unlike many European places, often objects end up on the tracks that shouldn't be there, like cars and trucks. I've heard stories about Via Rail's sleek LRC units, and crews generally disliked them as they knew in an accident they were screwed. One near-miss with one had the engineer jumping right out of the cab even though it was evident a hard collision was unlikely to occur. GO trains were still run by CN and CP crews in the late 80s. Believe it or not the PHI sleek nose design was actually considered, but because crews didn't want it, the Canadian cab design was used instead. I believe the F40 cab design was considered as well, but was rejected due to their relatively poor safety aspects in collisions and no walkway. A number of safety and space related issues with the SC-44 units were addressed but were ignored. Much better for sleekness, but the odds are not in favor of the crew if something unfortunate happens.
I love the F59PHI and how EMD/GM collaborated to come up with a stunning look. The Surfliner sets were by far the most attractive train sets made since Amtrak began. I'm sad that they are being replaced. In fact their replacement is by far the ugliest passenger option they could have chosen. I love the style of the new F125s but the Caterpillar built units have been inoperable for Metrolink. The SC44 would be ok if they reworked the front end. Via has an attractive alternative to what has been delivered to Amtrak. Maybe with a new administration a larger investment could be made and a better solution could be found.
Hi,Good video love your train talk series. The F59s are fascinating engines. Here in Tx in the Trinity Railway Express we do have some F59PHs and F59PHI.
I live in Washington and most of the time I see chargers on Amtrak cascades or cabbages but on a rare occasion I see one of these sleek engines pass by. Cant say I don't love that old horn and sound of it passing by.
I wish SunRail or Metra used F59PHI. SunRail bought refurbished locomotives just before they opened in 2014. It would have been cool to see F59PHI's in Florida. Cool video!
Fun Fact: Most of GO's F59's have been sold from 2007-2014 due to the MP40's replacing them. Only 8 remain on the GO Roster. Most of the sold units are in service. Even some were sold to Metrolink.
A very nice episode of "Train Talk" Mike, great work. Seeing that all of the Surfliner F59s were just rebuilt recently and maybe some of the Cascades at Beech Grove, I would hope they would stick around for a while longer. -Jon
I never knew until watching yours and AmtrakGuy365's videos on the PHI that the design was initially tendered by Caltrans, and the intent of the streamlined shape. I'm a Montrealer, so I'm familiar with exo's (previously AMT) units, and now have a much bigger appreciation for them. Also, our ex-GO PHs were rebuilt a few years ago at Juniata. The two types make up the bulk of exo's locomotive fleet, alongside Bombardier ALP-45DP that I expect could be sold at some point since their electric mode is basically useless now (see the REM project).
Yay! You uploaded it! I just have one question. I know the horn in behind the exhaust, muffling it. But where is the K5LA at? It isn't visible on the roof.
One thing I couldn't find out about was who has the last F59PHI ever made? Im thinking that that title goes to Sound Transit with the 911, being built around late 2001.
Next episode of Train Talk: Heritage Units from UP, Amtrak, NS, and CSX's kind of heritage units They only have those "heritage units" because CSX cant afford real ones because they have to pay for all the damage in wrecks.
Thank you for creating and showing this movie, I studied. American trains and railways differ from Japanese are interesting for me, I want they continue to keep originality.

F125s are supposed to start by the end of the month. The Chargers are supposed to lead solo on Amtrak California trains pretty soon as well and in December on Cascades trains. Pacific Surfliner Chargers probably not for another year or maybe 2.
Thank you very much for talking about the F59PHI. That is my most favorite diesel locomotive and it means a lot to me that you made this video about it. Also I want to know how I can get a F59PHI?@CoasterFan2105
Amtrak sold two F59PHI locomotives to Metra not to long ago. I've started noticing more P42s being used for Surfliner duties, must be acting as a filler locomotive until the SC-44s take over.
Great video! The F59 series has always been my favorite as I have know it since I took my very first ride on the Surfliner at only 3 years old. Anyways I have an idea for a future train talk episode. You should make an episode on the Superliners or Horizon cars.

If you ask me, the F59's are one of the three coolest passenger locomotives ever built.
They're neat looking locomotives!
What's the other two?
CoasterFan2105 the F59’s are my favourite locomotives
Metra MP36 407 I like them too
Metra MP36 407 GO Transit still has F59PHs
As of mid-2022, most of the last remaining F59PHI now live new lives with Chicago's commuter rail service, Metra.
Amtrak capitol corridor still operates their.f59phi
The F59PHI holds a special place in my heart because it was the first Amtrak I ever had in O scale. Still runs great after all this time
Great video. I always love the F59s. I hope they will be around for a while, and perhaps even preserved in the distant future. Thanks for sharing.
No problem! I'm glad you liked it and thank you for watching!
CoasterFan2105 Hey mike! :]
Hi!
CoasterFan2105 By far my favorite locomotive ever, talk about the Nathan Newcast P2
@@elperroazul9992 Why? The Chargers are great locomotives.
Excellent. Learned something new, just like always!
Thanks, John!

If you haven't already can you do a train talk on passenger cars !
Yes! I will be doing that, hopefully next year!
That moment when you realise that u heard SC-44s were gonna replace P42s and F59PHIs and you hate them but then they are 1 of ur favorite engines...
Do a train talk episode about the Amtrak P-42 Genesis locomotives. There so cool!
I thought everyone knew about the genesis locomotives.
YOU STOLE MY IDEA!! STOP STEALING IDEAS!!!
lol jk i love the P42DC's, P40DCs, P32ACs, and other genesis models. They are so awesome!
And btw, nice suggestion!
Zack and Zane you should be agreeing with me. I’m not stealing anyone’s ideas.

Excited to hear about GO. I live near Toronto and have taken GO a fair bit, and the locomotives always fascinate me
Do Amtrak POOCH train talk
The thing about them is they fit the Surfline cars perfectly unlike the charges that are to long and not tall enough the f59 are the perfect size
Ah opening shot of a Capitol Corridor at Alviso. I can already tell I'm going to like this video.
Awesome video, love the trains! Keep it up and have fun! 👍👍👍
Awesome video! When they do sell the F59PHI I hope the MBTA gets a few. But then again the MBTA is expected to get more HSP-46 locomotives.
Thanks! It's always possible!
It'd be nice if Sunrail got some, but they're happy with their MP40 Frankenstein monsters.
@Acerailfan3101 F40PH That's still wrong lol, they're MP32s
I wish SunRail or Metra used F59PHI. SunRail bought refurbished locomotives just before they opened in 2014. It would have been cool to see F59PHI's in Florida. Cool video!

You should do the AC6000CW!
Maybe I will!
F59PHI’s are my fav. Lovely locomotives, hope they aren’t going anywhere. Great series to, hope you come out with a new one soon.
Fun Fact: Most of GO's F59's have been sold from 2007-2014 due to the MP40's replacing them. Only 8 remain on the GO Roster. Most of the sold units are in service. Even some were sold to Metrolink.
0:30 three engines for three coaches?
1:45 what's that electric commuter line to the right?
2:33 nice catch of an F59PH in GO transit green!
Thanks for the comment! The electric line is a new light rail line for Charlotte, North Carolina.
Hey Mike. Just wondering, have you heard of the possibility of a Railfair set for the summer of 2020 here in Sacramento?
Hey Toby, I have not heard about that. Would be neat to see if it happens.
A very nice episode of "Train Talk" Mike, great work. Seeing that all of the Surfliner F59s were just rebuilt recently and maybe some of the Cascades at Beech Grove, I would hope they would stick around for a while longer. -Jon
I hope so too.
JonRailVideos2011, home of TheSd90mac-Railfanner I seen your videos😎
Hello mike nice to meet you 😃

I wish all of the f59phi's would stay with Surfliner
Me too
Yay! You uploaded it! I just have one question. I know the horn in behind the exhaust, muffling it. But where is the K5LA at? It isn't visible on the roof.
x тғw it's right where the hump on the roof is, under a section the goes across the roof.
Northwest Railfan Thanks
Looks like someone beat me to the answer! Thanks!
since u did a video on the Rochelle railroad park how about doing one on the horseshoe curve
If only NJT had some of these... I would LOVE to see one of them I've never seen one ever in my life
Thanks Mike very informative video. By the way do you know which locomotives Front-Runner uses in Utah?
CoasterFan2105 where did you recorded the screechy high pitch smooth axle track of the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner?
Hey, what part of the video are you referring to?
I’ve got 2 suggestions for train talk, Different train lines and what they’re used for and the Amtrak amfleet cab car
we need one for ge locos like from dash 7 to the et44ac/ah c45ah and talking about the identifiable features
One thing I couldn't find out about was who has the last F59PHI ever made? Im thinking that that title goes to Sound Transit with the 911, being built around late 2001.
What about a train talk on...Heritage units! And one on veteran units and First responders units.
I would like to do all of those!
Next episode of Train Talk: Heritage Units from UP, Amtrak, NS, and CSX's kind of heritage units
They only have those "heritage units" because CSX cant afford real ones because they have to pay for all the damage in wrecks.
Tre isn’t getting new locos anytime soon
I'd prefer the P2 over those F125 horns. Even the SC-44 has a K5LA.
Nice Episode. I knew that Episode was going to happen and It finally did!
Thanks, Alan!
I love the Tr-Window F59s in the TRE scheme
Can you do a train talk about the Amtrak Surfliner?
I will be doing that one next year!
CoasterFan2105 cool, can’t wait
NCDOT is actually planning to rebuild their F59's with Hydrogen Cell Motive Power from what i read in an article by them
MP40PH-3C? :)
MassDotFan1062 Productions Yes, MP40PH-3C.
x тғw sweet
Thank you for creating and showing this movie, I studied.
American trains and railways differ from Japanese are interesting for me, I want they continue to keep originality.
Farewell F59PHI, even though I'm Swiss and I never took you. 😪😪😪 Goodbye F59PHI the best locomotives of any amtrak. 🚅👋🏻😪
Please do another video train talk of sc-44 charger locomotive
Plz do a train talk episode of eastern long distance passenger trains! You did the western long distance trains so why not do the eastern ones? I also would like to see a train talk episode about intercity amtrak trains!
Intercity Amtrak Trains video is coming next year! Eastern Long Distance is coming too, but may be a while longer, because I need to get video of all the trains.
Great! Watched On My 20th Birthday.
Awesome! Happy birthday!
Thank You

The F59PHI Amtrak Pacific Surfliner with the buzzy railroad tracks along with the smooth axles
Its weird hearing the horn of a F59PHI. Im not used to it. Is it because Im ALWAYS around freights? I have NEVER seen a passenger train.
Love the commentary, very informative
Thanks, Mike! Glad you liked it.
You should make train talks more often
What are the different types of passenger cars for express trains?
Very good video. These locomotives look very top heavy i in my opinion, they look quite tall
They are some of the tallest passenger locomotives I've seen. Thanks!
Do you know when Metrolink's F125's will go into service? Also, won't the SC-44 Charger go into service later in this year?
F125s are supposed to start by the end of the month. The Chargers are supposed to lead solo on Amtrak California trains pretty soon as well and in December on Cascades trains. Pacific Surfliner Chargers probably not for another year or maybe 2.
1:27 why does metrolink have a frontrunner comet car?
Can you do one of these for the P42DC
Pls do a train talk on the dm30ac
I love the f59phi amtrak locomotives because a am 8 but when i was 4 me a d my dad got to ride on the amtrak with the f59phi locomotive on it
Please do SD70ACe/SD70M-2 next
Hoping to do that one next year!
CoasterFan2105 thanks
Question: do you know if the aerodynamic modifications resulted in significant improvements in efficiency?
Please do one on the GE Genesis
Thank you very much for talking about the F59PHI. That is my most favorite diesel locomotive and it means a lot to me that you made this video about it. Also I want to know how I can get a F59PHI?@CoasterFan2105
You're very welcome and thank you for watching! Are you talking about a model or an actual locomotive?
CoasterFan2105 can you talk about the AC44CW next?
I may be doing a video on that and the Dash-9 next year!
CoasterFan2105 cool. By any chance does Amtrak still run F40PH unit 401?
401 is currently stored out of service in Bear, Delaware.
Excellent video as always! Top notch bro!
Very good report, thanks.
2:53 While the F59 was a diesel locomotive, its boxy cab was quite clunky, and lacked any kind of aerodynamic design! :P

2:56 Ooo
Metrolink is replacing ALL of them!? With the F125, which I saw and uploaded at Fullerton... twice.
Amtrak sold two F59PHI locomotives to Metra not to long ago. I've started noticing more P42s being used for Surfliner duties, must be acting as a filler locomotive until the SC-44s take over.

Oh, no problem, thanks for replying. Big fan of your channel and trains. Keep up the good work 👍
Thanks, will do!
Metra now owns both locomotives on their fleet now. The plan though is to have a total fleet of 21 PHI units and a few more PH units. I think. ;-;
nice video,i was waiting for a train talk on a locomotive
Well, glad I could deliver! Thanks for watching!
you're welcome :) and can you do another train talk episode on ACS-64 and other amtraks locomotive retired locos and the ones still on service?
I'm going to try to get to all the major passenger and freight locomotives eventually!
alright thanks
EMD F59PHI is my favourite locomotive
Oh snap! 1 more hour till' a Coasterfan Video!
