- All aboard! Come along as we take a look at Amtrak's Dash-8 locomotives in action! The P32-BWH, or "Dash-8" locomotives were built in 1991 by General Electric. They were essentially freight locomotives that were geared to run at passenger train speeds and equipped to provide electricity to the passenger cars. Today, these locomotives are primarily used as yard switchers and trailing units on some long distance Amtrak trains, but you can occasionally see them leading passenger trains still. This video takes a look at several of these locomotives in action in the western United States.

Thank you so much for this video. I live in Carolina now, far from any tracks,. I grew up in Galesburg, Ill. during the 60's and would ride my bike up to the station and watch all the trains and masses of passengers going to and fro. When the trains would stop I'd go out and stand on the walkway near the Locomotives just so I could listen to their low rumbling and feel the power shaking my clothes as they pulled away. I would get so excited from watching and listening to them, AND of course waving to the engineer!!! I'm 62 years old, and today you have given me that excitement that I hadn't felt in well over 50 years... Thank you again....

BNSF_Lover , You're just the right age my young friend. Watch and listen to them, dream about where they came from and where they're going to. Stand and watch them go by, carrying people to so many different destinations. Enjoy your railroad dreams, but,,, just remember the most important part of loving trains,,, stay back a good safe distance from them, and that love of trains will always be with you no matter where you are. I certainly will. I have a few ancestors who worked for union Pacific, but sadly never got to meet them. I have some special connections with some railroad workers on the BNSF, UP, and Amtrak. The first thing I do when I see a train is think, "Just imagine the amount of time it takes to build these behemoths and how technology in these machines, how far it has come." God has blessed us with these monsters, not only to help our economy, but for great entertainment like this video. Stay safe my friend while watching these behemoths!

Everyone's gotta love the Dash 8. I saw one up close, but never in action. Unfortunately, I didn't see 506 in this video. Regardless, this was very well made. Thanks for sharing.

Those dash 8 units are great locomotives. CSX just sold all theirs and many are now PRLX Leaser units
Didn't they also sell all of their AC6000CWs as well? I saw a whole bunch of them in Kansas City! (Including the one with the Seaboard Air line sticker)

They were sold to GECX. There is about 20 left.
CSX still has some Dash 8 widecabs on their roster. I saw a 7600 series leading a Q Train to Indianapolis just two weeks ago.
I gotta say, 18:43 is a pretty sexy consist, all heavy duty locos, no monocoque designs. I actually approve 👍

I’d have to go with the Genesis units, they’re unique, workhorses, sound incredible, have amazing power under the hood, aerodynamic, and most importantly, American!
My personal favorites, the EMD F- series (Yes, like Ford!), are a true rarity nowadays some 48 years after the last one left LaGrange.

I love Amtrak - 8 horn
These were an excellent replacement locomotive for the F40s, wished they stayed in the system longer.

The Alaska Railroad did the same thing with the 2 F40s they bought from Amtrak , pull the power unit out and make it A baggage unit.

A lot of these Dash 8's have great-sounding horns! But I wouldn't be surprised if Amtrak starts selling some of them to commuter operators or leasing companies! It would be nice if they repainted at least one of the Dash 8s is Phase III "Pepsi Can" colors!

I lived in Fresno for nine years and Amtrak was my near-exclusive (by choice mainly) way of traveling to my home area of Sacramento County. I've only see the Dash-8 locos painted in either Phase III or CalTrans paint schemes (for the two that CDTX bought from AMTK) on the San Joaquins route.

Nate Jackson They're really not all everyone thinks they are. At full HEP load they only produce 1685 traction horsepower and they are really quite slow to accelerate.

Here in New England we have The Amtrak's downeaster to Portland and Brunswick ME. Coming from Boston MA. It would be awesome to see a Dash-8 for once on them. We have the P- units on there and the empty F-units that are only used for controlling the train. I love Amtrak and all it's different types of engines. I really this video and can't wait to see more of your video's. Happy railfanning!

Also, there's one other thing I REALLY love about the Dash 8s that I don't see anyone else here mentioning: Their amazing bells. That there is one other true aspect of what makes these Dash 8s as great as they are. Sadly, they're now being replaced with E-Bells.
I thought I was the only one! When one would take off, I love to go stand next to the bell and hear it up close. The K5LA's on these also sound beautiful.
