I think both pedals sound very good. If any of us were sitting and watching this guitar player at a gig, I don’t think any of us would care what pedal he was running as long as it sounds good. So mxr/boss?, it’s in the hands of the craftsman. Thank you for a great comparison. Cheers
Sounds like the MXR is set more "wet" than the Boss for this video. Setting the E. Level knob on the Boss a bit higher would've yielded a more fair A/B comparison, imo. In regards to the pedals you probably can't go wrong with either. MXR seems better for some things, Boss for others. RV-6 has the advantage in reliability & housing design (9v jack near the input on the MXR is awkward)
Good points but I feel like the MXR has more depth overall, the MXR sounds more organize compared to the more crisp digital sound of the boss. They are both great pedals to me, but these are some different things I noticed. Y’all’s thoughts on what I said? Thx guys
I tried the Meris Polymoon and Mercury7 in a shop recently and at the same time tried the RV6 and the MXR Reverb. The RV6 and MXR Reverb were way better than the Meris stuff in my opinion. If you were gonna buy two pedals to stack together, it would be these two - again in my opinion.
There was something more organic about the sound of the MXR, but the Boss is quite a lot cheaper and can be run in stereo... Also, a few of the MXR reverbs I tried had noisy switches that would make pops and clicks through the amp when switching the effect on and off - which is not a problem I've ever had with Boss.
I've watched different reverb pedals videos on BOSS, TC HOF and MXR comparisons for acoustic. I gotta say MXR for me leads here. Chain it with bodyrez gets even better. Good clear comparison here.
I feel like the BOSS sounds like a DRY reverb and the MXR like a WET reverb. That said, it seems like the BOSS sounds more realistic, like if you're really playing in different rooms or spaces, and the MXR have a more digital watery chorusy sound, that is very common to hear in recent music.
Im not sure I could pick a favourite haha they are both fantastic.. I used the Boss RV-5 for practically every Ambient Improv on my channel so I'm possibly a bit bias haha.. that was in a stereo rig.. and the RV-6 is an improvement on the RV-5.. the only big difference you're paying for would be the Kill Dry function on the MXR.. thats opens up more options for different rig setups.. my rig at the moment is two amps one WET one DRY.. the MXR is better suited for that.. and also better suited to be used singularly in an effects loop.. other than that its all about tone and budget :P
MXR nailed it with this reverb and the new Tremolo released around the same time. In person, with two amps or stereo IRs to an interface or live to FOH, the MXR has a wider stereo spread
Thanks for all your videos man. I already got the MXR Reverb and I love it. I also sold my Neunaber Stereo WET (v2) after using it for two years. I tried to not sell it as best as I could by playing with the Expanse software, but to my ears it is not a match for the new MXR Reverb nor to Strymon units at all. I know many people praise the WET but to my ears it sounds mediocre at best. I used it on live and studio many many times and I was never satisfied. It was like the reverb was somehow added to the dry signal (like sitting upon it instead of melding it with the dry signal) and also I can definitely say that though Neunaber says the pedal is Analog Dry Through, but to my ears I can hear a very audible difference when the pedal is turned on. It adds a little bit of harshness that removes a bit of depth of my dry signal. The Spring on the Expanse is just a joke in compare to MXR, period. The Pad is superb and very inspiring, the Plate on the MXR sits behind the mix very well and is a great reverb for especially studio purposes (I'm running my medium size studio as well) especially if one needs to run the reverb in live runs in the studio before the post production phase. The Room as well is probably the best room algo I have heard after my Altiverb Convolution reverb in my Pro Tools. It is up there with my PCM plugins and rack units, its that good! Cheers,
no problem :) ahh thats interesting! I usually hear great things about the Neunaber range and both the WET mono and stereo.. I'm eager to try them out and let you know my opinion! I love the Immerse but I love anything that can do very unnatural things haha I do think the MXR is fantastic though.. well worth the money! Thanks for your comment :D
My experience. I used an RV6 for a few months that my bassist let me borrow and I absolutely loved it. I bought an MXR recently and I haven’t been happy with it. It sucks the tone really bad. The Boss didn’t do that. I’m getting another RV6.
To my ears you can hear that the Boss pedal is more digital sounding. The MXR on the other hand has a more real analog/natural sound. I think very similar to what strymon does. The reason why strymon is so highly sought after
What does an analog reverb pedal sound like? Strymon makes unapologetically digital reverb, as does pretty much everyone save for a spring tank, or people actually putting a mic up against a plate.
Kevin Harris Strtmon is mostly digital but these use an analog dry signal path which makes a huge difference. That being said I sold my Big Sky not because it wasn’t amazing but I prefer something more simple.
Sound definitely goes to the MXR , and I’m a boss guy . MXR puts out some great pedals just picked up the analog chorus and love it more than my boss . Boss has MXR beat with the stereo out and price. I also hate the location of the power in on MXR pedals . I think my next Reverb will be the MXR
Chorus you are comparing are Boss CE-2w and MXR Analog Chorus ? For the stereo, if you talk about MXR300 it is actually stereo, but you need Y cables in and out
boss has easy-going feel mxr is serious and thoughtful comparing yellow to blue is nonsense gathering many cheap reverbs is better than having only one expensive one imo
Nice video but useless "Test" with the "Blend" knob on the MXR not fully on either side. The Boss does not come with a blend button so it´s this OR that not "and".
This was very useful. Listening to demos online is never as good as the real thing, but I got out of this video most of what I would have gotten by spending a lot of time and effort driving to a shop and doing this.
I feel like the type of pickups you have can also make it sound more metallic. I have humbuckers, so I can’t say I’ve ever felt like my RV6 sounded like that.
Another nicely done comparison. I'm listening in headphones and it sounds like stereo reverb coming from the MXR but the output is a mono connection. Is there anything downstream?
Great quality clip... cheers. Can I achieve hold/freeze with either of these??? After 20+ years I've decided hold, freeze, and reverb are the 'Delay' I've been searching for all this time. Long time owner, user, and huge fan of the ZCat Hold Reverb... a piece of genius... interestingly, outside of EHX, no other companies have tried to rip off the freeze/hold until this product... even the big players don't get the freeze right (hello B@ss TE2 and ME25)... Freeze/hold effect must be a monster of an effect to design. I would pay money (pay real dollars) for a freeze effect as good as ZCat or EHX that can run off a 9v battery.
Even the Behringer has a better spring than the Boss. I really think they struggle with reverbs. The Biss beats the Behringer on modulation but not by much. The MXR is a no brainer. Smaller than both the others. Has a massive headroom for synth and high gsin guitarists. Great dpring sound and that near infinite on their modern sounding Epic and Pad. Without the drop down menus or dual function, knobs on a Meris, Strymon etc. Its a win win.
the diversity in comments seems odd to me - the audio was done quite well in this video and it showed a stark contrast between the boss and the mxr - the boss may not have been horrible but the mxr was much richer - to the point that with the plate and the spring there really was no comparison .
Great video. Exactly how it would test them. With no music store near me, i am dependant on video comparisons. I will be ordering a MXR. Thanks for the post!
one of the hardest choices haha I think the MXR is bit better.. but i honestly don't think its loads better than the boss.. and there is quite a price difference between the two.. so on a budget i'd happily choose the boss :) plus its got an awesome delay setting
Damn I'm about to pick between two of these and still can't decide after this video. I love the Pad setting on the MXR better than the shimmer on the boss, but the spring on the MXR is so realistic
Weird demo. Glad to see these two in a shoot out, but we get it regarding the tone knob. It would have been good to match the decays up. Might have been nice to strum a chord as well.
thank you! sadly the Empress Reverb is a bit out of my price range at the moment but if i can afford once I sell a bunch of gear I'll get one and do a video.. thanks for the request! :D
The mxr spring sounds nothing like a spring. It's just an echo. On the boss you can hear the springs bouncing back and fordward. The Mxr reverbs are very alike from each other. The boss for me was more accurate. For modulation effects, boss is one of the best in the business.
Yup. Would love the Neunaber or Strymon big sky but for what I do maybe just the RV6 would be fine. Plus the price is a factor. Will keep an eye on eBay for a bargain.
I think both pedals sound very good.

The mxr sounds more like a chorus pedal at times. Where as the boss sounds like a reverb. Also adding delay can be real sweet at times. :D
Kolby Winn Agree and that’s one of the reasons I chose Boss RV 6 for my reverb pedal.
Good points but I feel like the MXR has more depth overall, the MXR sounds more organize compared to the more crisp digital sound of the boss. They are both great pedals to me, but these are some different things I noticed. Y’all’s thoughts on what I said? Thx guys
I've tried both in a music store. The MXR is definitly better.
This was exactly what I was looking for! Keep up the great videos!
happy to help :)
Mod setting goes to boss possibly spring as well.
I agree, the Meris and a lot of those other big box reverbs are super complicated.
There was something more organic about the sound of the MXR, but the Boss is quite a lot cheaper and can be run in stereo... Also, a few of the MXR reverbs I tried had noisy switches that would make pops and clicks through the amp when switching the effect on and off - which is not a problem I've ever had with Boss.

fair play :) I doubt you'll regret it!
MXR sounds much richer i think.

in my opinion. the boss pedal has that annoying ringing or pinging sound for all their settings. mxr does too but its very subtle.
All reverbs do that. I forgot the audio production explanation as to why but it tends to up your highs.
Boss reverbs always seem to have a metallic sound I just can't get into. Mxr for me!!
Glistening Kabana I
I could not agree more!
They're both very comparable but the MXR has the slight edge.
Boss Rv6 very good!!!
Boss rv6 have more blend range. The rv6 mod and shimer is excelent. Mxr and boss is good reverb pedal for the price.

The MXR actually DOES have stereo ins and outs.
No doubt...MXR is the best!
boss has easy-going feel
mxr is serious and thoughtful
comparing yellow to blue is nonsense
gathering many cheap reverbs is better than having only one expensive one imo
The Boss easily wins imho. But was it because the MXR blend was set too high? Because the effect was ringing out longer.
I like the reverb pedal more
There's too much chorus-like color on mxr. I think the boss is more faithful to the basics
I rented both, the MXR was way nicer, didn't like the lack of a battery compartment i.e. You have to have a power supply. But I still bought it.
Does the mxr have a level knob somewhere? Noticed the boss has o ne, but doesn't look like the mxr has one.
Is there anything downstream?
thanks! the reverb coming out the MXR is stereo :) you have to use y cables to used it as a stereo unit :)
Read about "TRS" cables and inputs.
Dat mxr headroom! Gorgeous!
I understand what you were trying to do but you don't hear the dynamics of either playing only 3 notes
disagree. It's the best way to demo 2 pedals
Great quality clip... cheers. Can I achieve hold/freeze with either of these???

Great video. Exactly how it would test them. With no music store near me, i am dependant on video comparisons. I will be ordering a MXR. Thanks for the post!
MXR is better but the price is really different...

Mxr sounds better to me, something about the Boss that makes the natural guitar sound not sound cohesive with the reverb effect.
Interesting :)
The mxr has a more realistic sound. mxr is better

IMO MXR = Flat & Boss = Bright.

Boss good
I like how mxr pedals burn out my retinas!
Okay but spring to the RV6 is better

IMO they could have used a guitar on this comparison... I mean more than 3 notes!
Mxr is the clear Winner here :)
Mxr has more richer sound :)
Isn't that sort of mean to a Boss pedal?
The Rv-6 is not better, but I like it more, you know.
