    Nice collection. You have lots of land to fill with bonsai. Your garden will be amazing in the future. I can see in years to come you will be building some great display areas.

      Thanks Margaret! It will be a long process, but I’m up for playing the long game. You’re right, next step is building some legitimate display spots! Hoping to show some of that this year. Thanks for watching.

    You’ve got a good thing going on there! Good materials! It’s it’s great to see more bonsai enthusiasts doing videos, I have start doing it myself. I have watched so many and still it’s not enough. A little tip about your dawn redwood, that one you curve. You can apply wood stain/sealer (from Home Depot) in walnut finish. A small can would last years. That would make it darker and look a little old. If you will wait for it, it will take years before it darkens. Ok, thanks for sharing! cheers from LA!

      Do not use a wood stain. Treat all deadwood with lime sulphur, aka jin seal. Available on line. It will grey the wood to make it look old and weathered. I have doing bonsai for about 40 years and do a lot of deadwood on my trees.

    Great platform to promote bonsai in the state. Ever thought of doing local bonsai garden tours? The Grand Rapids club is doing a club members garden tour and may be a good series as well. Keep spreading the good word.

      @@GreatLakesBonsai I'm into larch trees my self. But a lot of native trees here ppl say don't make good bonsai because either there leaf's are to big and don't easily reduce in size or the grow to fast. I would recommend big bonsai trees.

    Is that bonsai jack soil you are using ? if so how are you liking it, i just ordered some. Not much of a selection out here ( Alberta ) Great looking stuff you got. just like yourself i started bonsai about a year ago but have always loved gardening and art. Bonsai is the perfect mix of that. Subbed ( came here from bonsai nut )
    Keep it up brotha!

    • @GreatLakesBonsai
      @GreatLakesBonsai  5 років тому +1

      Matt Eastman yes indeed, Bonsai Jack (conifer mix for my conifers and standard for the rest). I like it but. Expensive so always try to get largest size.
      Keep pressing on! I’d take a look at native species, I’ve been trying to focus on trees that will naturally do well in my area. That includes more scouting for collection. I bet you have some awesome specimens out there. Alberta is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. (Banff & jasper, loveee)

      Great Lakes Bonsai thanks appreciate the info. I'm more worried about the over wintering m I don't have a shed. I have Fukien , ficus and dwarf schefflera since I can keep them alive inside . I really want to start a nice elm and maple. Maybe some type of citrus.

    • @GreatLakesBonsai
      @GreatLakesBonsai  5 років тому

      @@drolsisusej100 Ficus I'd worry about for a garage... my ficus nerofilia and ficus retusa do fine inside over winter with a south/west facing window though. Overwintering for deciduous can work fine with a unheated garage/protect from wind or even mulch and protection outside. I'd do some reading up on ficus indoor care over winter but you should be fine!

    Great lakes bonsai?? I havnt seen one tree remotely even looking like a bonsai.. I seen a lot of you guys having a few stumps and regular trees and putting it in bonsai soil and giving yourselves a name that ends with bonsai like that means anything...
    Like you said it might get interesting in about 10 or 15 years. Good luck and see you in 10 a 15 years!

      Spot on assessment! Definitely geared towards beginners into the hobby, sharing with them on their initial efforts and basic learnings (which is where I am) and what is involved to begin that journey. I'd agree that I don't have one single 'show ready' tree that would be considered a completed bonsai! First mile of a marathon. Appreciate your feedback and thanks for watching!

      @@GreatLakesBonsai well said, I'm sorry I came across a bit strong but I will explain myself because you took the time too awnser. We are both on the same side. "Offcours" I'm also very into bonsai and learning my ass off for a few years and lately like I told you I see a lot of guys "pretending" and spreading bad information (I didn't caught you doing that, just saying) and it started to eat me up inside there for maybe my harsh reaction. What kind of style are you attracted too?

    • @GreatLakesBonsai
      @GreatLakesBonsai  5 років тому +1

      Cairo no prob at all! I get frustrated with people putting sticks in pots and calling them bonsai as well :) I’m hoping to develop some slanting, some informal upright of course, and would love to try a cascade conifer or two. The learning process is going to take many years! How about you?

      @@GreatLakesBonsai I love bonsai that kinda tell a story what they went through. I'm at the point of learning how far I can go bending the trees and try to keep them healthy (does not all ways work out yet haha) but getting there. Soon I'll be starting with a project of putting 3 trees together and bending and twisting them as one 🤞🏽🤞🏽
