Gotten into trees over the last couple months. Have procured 7 trees so far including coast and dawn redwoods, willow trees hemlocks and junipers and a Rocky Mountain pine I grew from seed.
Thanks much Gordon - I kinda showed it in the Dawn redwood video. I need to document the process step by step. Basically you position a seedling with its root system alongside the base of the tree you’re trying to graft to, cut a slit in the main tree trunk, and wedge the seedling in. Then once merged, chop the trunk off the seedling and you have its root system connected to the main tree.
Hi, I have a very similar tree. I think it was a bonsai project abandoned by someone at a nursery as it has & had ( I chopped some) branches criss crossing, inverse taper at the apex, trunk rot at the bottom & missing root nebari! But I feel in love with its potential. After repotting, a lot of watering, & feeding it has responded with loads of back budding & sick looking leaves now look healthy. I hope to follow your progress & it has inspired me to research grafting as I think that could be a great solution for its problems. I have a couple of other healthy reds in early development, could I use cuttings grown on from them for grafts? Thanks for putting out your video 😊
Hi Jill - thanks so much for watching and sounds like a fun project! I would definitely recommend using those young seedlings for grafting - I did the same with a recent repot and they are growing in nicely (root grafts). I can’t recall whether I have another video out there that shows the grafting process well. They are vigorous trees and I’m so glad you are enjoying the process of redesigning! Cheers.
Got 20 coastal red wood seeds being stratified at the moment... got no experience with this species. hope it germinates after the winter (South Africa). Also, hard to find anyone in South Africa growing them... Great Video!
Thanks for watching - yes, I have one coastal redwood that I’ve been growing for 4-5 years. I do plan on a sequoia at some point to see how they can handle our winters. The coastal has to be sheltered from freezing temps which makes it tricky here in Michigan - otherwise I’d have a bunch growing out long term. It’s doing great and should be closer to ‘done’ in a few years as a twin trunk.

Thanks for watching - did your seeds germinate yet? Best of luck with them!
Nice. I'm trying to figure out what to do with some Sequoia seedlings that are a year old.
Grow ‘em out and prune, grow out and prune, repeat!
Nice
Love this, thanks for making it! Do you have any coast redwood or Sequoia going?

How do you winter this beauty
I leave it outside all winter. Protected from wind and mulched with leaves up to the first branch. Never skips a beat!
Thank you
