Did you even remember Final Fantasy XII existing? You would think counting from one to fifteen you would recall there was a twelfth game in the series. There's good reason as to why it fell down a collective memory hole. It starts with doing nothing interesting and playing it as safe as possible, and continues into a bunch of other issues I list in the video. Here are the sins of Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age.

    • @huemins
      @huemins 4 роки тому +1

I didnt get from the video that "The game is bad", he just points out very obvious flaws and tropes. You gotta see and understand things more nuanced. Take my experience for example: I enjoyed playing most of the "game" that is ye olde PS2 FFXII. Altho I enjoyed it, I think he's right about almost everything he said concerning the gameplay. A game could almost always be better and more profoundly designed. And I, as the gamer/consumer, can enjoy something not so profoundly designed, something with flaws or even literal trash by all standards of judgement lol. While I enjoyed the gameplay, I hated the narrative execution. I liked the theme, I liked the setting and overall world design and found those to be compelling. I was intruiged by the cast, by the social roles they represented and the potentially interesting dynamics implicated by that group. Unfortunately, I was utterly disappointed by how little was done, narratively, to make me care about any of those. Sure, I also like the trope that Balthier represents. I like Fran for her accent, they have aestethically pleasant designs and it's nice to have a pair of mixed sex ("interracial") partners without them being framed as a romantic couple? To me, they are still too one sided and not "deep" or complex enough to feel like actual people. So I still couldnt give 2 shits about them dying or not. Honestly, at some point I was only able to (tragically) laugh at how underwhelmed I felt about every cutscene that conveyed emotions that I wasnt prepared to share. So. I like FF XII. It's always been one of my fav games. But I can hate it too. I understand the valid criticism from certain perspectives even when I dont share it (i mostly enjoyed the gambit system). I loved playing FFXII, but I personally would say it's objectively not a great game 😂 decent, yes. Solid, I guess. Enjoyable? Depends on your preferences and priorities. Could have been much better with little effort, which I find always unfortunate :-0

  • @TonicSpirits
    @TonicSpirits 4 роки тому +39

Disclaimer: A lot of my love for FFXII is based on nostalgia and I recognize it has a lot of problems. That said, these are the issues I had with the sins in this video:
7:06 Vayne forcefully removed the Senate after framing them and usurped power. It's possible that Arcadia's leader was chosen democratically prior to Vayne's rise to power.
10:16 It's plausible Vaan never saw viera while growing up in the huge city of Rabanastre. Just because two viera were in the opening cutscene doesn't mean there are a bunch of them running around. And even if Vaan had seen a viera before, they're a very small minority and foreign to urban environments, so it makes sense that Vaan would be curious when seeing Fran up close.
12:27 Gabranth was facing away from Vaan and Balthier's perspective, they wouldn't have been able to see he had the same face as Basch. And the conversation between Gabranth and Basch didn't explicitly make clear that Gabranth faked being Basch and framed him as a traitor.
17:35 This sin is technically valid in Zodiac Age where the devs updated Larsa to use Magicks, but in the original, Larsa never used any.
20:04 I genuinely don't understand this sin. "Wasted all of your Myst bars"? Early-to mid game Espers only take one or two out of the three maximum Myst bars a single party member can have, and Quickenings often consume all Myst bars of every member in your party if you chain them for big damage. And the Espers are extremely powerful for when you unlock them in the game. Yes, the summon is undone if the summoner is knocked out, but... just heal up if the summoner is low on health? And control the Esper (a feature that came with Zodiac Age) to be closer to enemies so it aggroes them, and you can even cast Decoy on most of the Espers to make sure they tank the damage. Its big flashy attack isn't the only reason to use it; it's a dominating presence when on the field too.
21:16 The Death Star fell to a design flaw (at the time the original game was released before Rogue One retconned it). The Leviathan fell to Ghis' hubris, doing something unconventional with a magic rock that overloaded his ship.
25:01 Maybe Fran wouldn't take offense, but that doesn't change that Vaan's question was pretty inane considering he set it up like a serious question. And the rest of them are humes, so their sensibilities still stand to consider directly asking a woman her age to be rude.
27:59 Destroying the Dawn Shard would embolden Ashe to not rely on nethicite. Of course the Occuria would turn Ashe away from that notion to make her more malleable to using nethicite. It's not about the Dawn Shard in particular, it's about nethicite in general.
28:18 Bergan is pretty insane at this point, being drunk on the power of nethicite. So I can buy he'd go on a killing spree and make evil monologues. True the info should be secret for tactical reasons, but Bergan doesn't care, especially since he's talking to people he's planning to kill.
32:46 Why and how would the party intentionally hide themselves? The Occuria did it. Plus they're powerful beings that seemed to transport them into different dimensions. It's not hard to believe they can make themselves and Ashe invisible to the party.
33:29 Putting fate into the hands of man sounds noble on paper, but it's at the expense of Vayne basically ruling the world, all the while scheming and killing. That seems pretty villainous to me.
33:55 They said "with the Sword of Kings," not the Treaty-Blade given to them by the Occuria. Granted, both of those can cut through nethicite to either destroy it or make new shards of it, but the Treaty-Blade was the Occuria's way of manipulating Ashe like "hey use this sweet sword we're gifting you to seize your dream". And she already had the Sword of Kings, so she could destroy nethicite anyways if she wanted. I see it as a symbolic gesture, like King Raithwall got the Sword of Kings, Ashe gets the Treaty-Blade and feels like she's on a divine mission from the gods, so she's more easily seduced into using nethicite.
37:42 This sin completely ignores that just a few minutes earlier, a few Imperial fighters engaged the Strahl to try and stop its approach. Plus the whole army is busy fighting the Resistance, they wouldn't pay much attention to some lone ship flying below the battle.
38:37 Yes, the group is a bigger threat than Gabranth right now. But when you're mad at your insubordinate for slighting you, I can buy that you'd want to kill him on the spot even if he's not the immediate threat.
39:37 They're identical twins, yes, but they also had different upbringings, life experiences, etc. It's possible they can develop different voices as little differences in their lives add up. Dante and Vergil are identical twins (well... not so identical anymore in DMC5, but see above argument and apply it to their physical appearance), but nobody complains about their voices being distinctly different from each other.

Now that im 20yo, i bought the remastered PS4 one and could understand it entirely, i smoked a joint every night and just play for 8 hours, level up, explore everything, do the side quests, easter eggs, etc. Thank you for doing this video years after the game came out, you brought such beautiful memories!

Well from what I remember from years this game had a troubled development since the original director, Yasumi Matsuno, left due to a illness. rumors says he there was a lot of problems with him and the rest of team but this is why its set in Ivalice and why there are so many similar elements in FF XII and Tactics.
I do remember hearing this, that the game was supposed to have airships combat and there is some credence to that considering airships were named after FF summons as the actual summons have completely new names (at least for Final Fantasy main series) and I think the fast travel points were original meant to be the point were you could board the airship but all of that was cut.
None of this is a excuse, its a very flawed game likely because of Yasumi Matsuno departure as well the rumored issues he had with the rest of the team that forced Square to get someone in to just finish the game and since game development is not linear this likely caused a mix-match of areas that were at least well into production and areas that had to be done from scratch with a likely deadlines on their heads, this game once hold the title of longest game in development and this was mid-late PS2 era.

I don't think I'll ever understand what people have to complain about regarding the Gambit system. It literally allows you to customize the AI of your allies to do exactly what you want them to do, when you want them to do. It automatizes the regular actions of the battle system, and encourages you to use a variety of skills, which is something that you usually wouldn't bother with in most RPGs because you wouldn't be arsed to navigate through menus and you'd just end up spamming Attack instead. It's the best middle ground between full manual control (which you can also still do, if you wished to) which ends up being spamming regular attacks, and fully automatized AI (like FF XIII) which will make you rage when they do the wrong action or cast the wrong spell. It allows the player to create the perfect strategy for each situation, which is a fantastic way of making the gameplay much more engaging.
There is no game out there, no other system that allows the player this much control over the ally AI, which is always something that will piss you off in difficult situations because the AI cannot be as smart as a human. The Gambits allow you to take full control and responsibility for the AI's actions. Everyone hates stupid ally AI. Here they give you the tools to build your perfect AI. And you don't like it? You'd rather manually select each action? You'd rather rely on the AI's good will to use the correct attacks for you (which would also feel far less satisfying) ? I don't get it.

There’s a formula which I really like from the lead game designer of Civilization IV, which states that: a player’s total fun = number of meaningful decisions / the amount of time played.
It’s why games like Super Mario Bros., Devil May Cry, and earlier Final Fantasies have such dedicated followings-they require you to constantly make meaningful gameplay decisions over the course of only a few seconds, and based on a huge number of variables.
The problem with FFXII’s gambit system is that it is SO intuitive that it directly interferes with that formula. A decent setup allows you to run MOST of the game on auto-pilot, which takes away the fun because the player is not actually being required to do much of anything.
Now, you might ask: “why would anyone do that? If the gambits are ruining the experience then just don’t use them.”
And that’s a fair point, but the reason why so many people resort to this is because many players-myself included-are JUST NOT INTERESTED in the gameplay; we’re there to enjoy the STORY, and we see the gameplay as banal and little more than an OBSTACLE that we simply need to overcome in order to get to the next story section.
In other words, we take the path of least resistance because we’re here to enjoy the story-we don’t care about the gameplay because MMO-style combat just doesn’t appeal to us (we find it boring to be quite honest). Thus, we turn to the gambits in order to make the gameplay easier so that we can just get to the story sections as quickly and efficiently as possible.
The problem is that there are just TOO MANY enemies in the game. The combat loses all sense of impact because no matter how many enemies you fight, there are still going to be thousands more right around the corner. The levels are just TOO DAMN LONG. I tried playing the game a few months back, and it was one of the most boring gaming experiences I’ve had in a long time for the reasons listed above. I eventually gave up and stopped playing after I had reached the Giruvegan (Great Crystal), because not only was the gameplay repetitive and tedious, but the cutscenes were so sparsely distributed that I’d completely lost interest in the story altogether.
None of this is to say that you are wrong for enjoying the game; all the more power to you. I am simply trying to explain WHY some people, like me, find this game to be so boring.

From some things I've read, Basch was actually supposed to be the main character of the game. However, they decided he was "too old" and thus unmarketable as the main hero. That's really the only reason for Vaan to exist... and Penelo... I think she only exists because Vaan needed some motivation. Though really, the whole thing is really stupid.
By the way, some of the most beloved FF characters are older. Auron from FF X is the perfect example than this. Yeah, Tidus was the main character in that but I don't know anyone who doesn't at least like Auron. You also have most of the Cid incarnations. The idea that older characters aren't "good enough" is stupid.

I'll throw this right out there and see if it's addressed: I played this on the PS4, but I gave up after Mt. Bur-Omisace because it seemed I had to just keep grinding to progress through the hordes of enemies, rather than just travel through at my own pace like I've been able to do in literally every other game I've ever played. I watched the rest on UA-cam. At least the story is good, and I enjoyed the gameplay that I did get to.
You only see Vayne a few times throughout the entire game before you have a final boss fight with him... and you're probably ROOTING for him through most of it until the out-of-left-field genocide attack plan at the end.
19:10 Even funnier, once you get to the end of the next dungeon, the Empire immediately contradicts the "airships can't fly in Jagd". Almost makes you wonder why you have an airship two hours into the game if the sky pirates can't make decent use of it. Seriously, airships are more relevant in a game where the hero is afraid of heights than a game where two of the main characters are sky pirates and the guy you're stuck with as "the" main character wants to be one.
20:24 Actually, he sees Reks' ghost, because the Occuria are hoping to use him as a backup in case Ashe doesn't come up to snuff (I don't know if that was stated in supplementary materials or not; I just got it off of TV Tropes). It's like they think he's a main character or something.
You keep calling it "Dust" Shard. It's "Dusk", as in as opposed to "Dawn".
24:39 Vaan doesn't learn by the time of Dissidia Opera Omnia. In fact, he probably becomes even dumber in this aspect, since at least here he realizes how awkward it is.
Honestly, I'm glad I didn't get to the "chops" part of the game. Or the final dungeon.

I won't call it hate, but I don't LIKE this game. But it comes from my love of FF as a whole. It's not a bad game, but just doesn't measure up as a FF game.
The story is, as Dartigan points out, just Star Wars, but slightly more interesting cause Magic > Force (Being that I hate Sci-fi, too)
The battle system is... Awkward. I DO like Gambits, as being able to code your allies to do things means a lot for someone who loves strategies like myself, but don't have the reflexes to pull them off. Too bad only a couple of fights were actually worth using them properly though...
While I'm on the topic of Gambits, License Board. It's terrible. Just a cheap version of the Sphere Grid. Where the Sphere Grid ultimately gave you complete freedom to make the game as hard or easy as you wanted by how many (If any) of its abilities and stat gains you unlocked, the License Board is something FAR worse. Where the Sphere Grid could be called tedious (I would NOT blame you for that either), the License Board is, instead, boring. You have not only abilities, but ARMOR and WEAPONS locked behind 'licenses', so even if you get a really cool and rare equip, nope, you can't wear that cause you don't have the 'license' for it. I may not always have the patience for the SG, but I most assuredly don't appreciate being slapped in the hand and told I can't use a piece of gear or spell that I've EARNED just because the game says so. (It's a little different than say, ultimate or powerful gear that locked to specific jobs/characters)
The summons are... Underwhelming and pointless. Ultima is the last good one, and Zodiark is literally trash despite being the 'final' one. I HAAAAAAATE Zodiark, and literally stopped playing it because of him. The fight is needlessly long due to instant death mechanics (Because of course it is) and his main attack when you finally do get him he's just as useless as the rest, only he looks stupid too. Sure, he's stronger than most, but still not nearly as strong as a good chain of Quickenings.
The superboss is the third worst in the series. Yizmat isn't interesting. It's just a beast with a literal s!$% ton of HP. Superbosses are supposed to be difficult fights that require a game plan to walk into even if you're max level. Not damage sponges. And I don't even like his design either, the Weapon look actually worked better in 2D with Atma/Ultima weapon from 6. The only superbosses I've seen in the games that's worse is Long Gui (13: It's merely an Adamantiose... that wrecks your face even if you know what you're doing.) and Ozma (9: Literally just a pissed off tie-die rubber ball.).
Ultimately, again, it's not BAD. Just... It has a lot of games before it that were way better. And more unique. And, most importantly, more fun.
