This games biggest problem is that Frey can barely relate to the moral at the end of the game. They spent too much time making her an unlikeable asshole and not enough time driving home the fact that she has nobody. Them just mentioning that she’s an orphan a thousand times wasn’t enough to convince anyone.
That and there was little character development. Frey is an asshole up till the exposition dump and now all of a sudden cuz her mom did in fact love her she's a better person? It's INCREDIBLY shallow.
Does this count as a defence? Forspoken can now be used as a guide for what not to do when making a game, ensuring that all future games have precisely no excuse for being as bad or worse than it.

@@jakespacepiratee3740 My problem with P-3 was more that he was the very definition of Naive meathead. He utterly refused to believe that his boss could be a badguy and was manipulating him even as the evidence piled up. I didn't see Charles as the villain at first because of this. I just saw him as someone who was trying to explain to P-3 that not everything is at is seems and try to apply a little critical thinking to the situation. I strongly disagree, for Forspoken *looks so* plain, "by the numbers," "going through the motions," and like an A.I. wrote it that "cringe" sounds too interesting to describe it with.

I love watching this. Being reminded why I shouldn't play this game because all the main character choices sound so dumb that I would rather play shadow the hedgehog
@@History_PodcastFinalAssignment Narrative choices that mean jack shit and are inconsistent with each other if you decide to switch paths mid playthrough. Also, there's a canonical final route that you get after completing the non canon routes. It always irritates me when a seemingly normal person rises to power on their own merit, then it turns out they were some all-powerful whatever the whole time, so they didn't even really have to try
I’m sure the writers tried making Frey a reluctant protagonist. But she’s not. She’s more of an annoyed protagonist. From how she acts in the story to all her mid-gameplay conversations with Cuff, she doesn’t let the player forget she HATES everything she’s doing. She gets less motivated to fight the Tantas as the game goes on to the point the last one needs to drag her into a trap to keep the story going. In the ending, it doesn’t feel like there’s any character growth. She just thinks she has from the rush of power in becoming the inheritor of all the Tantas. And even after saying that, I really want to see a sequel. I need to know what the developers wanted to follow up this dumpster fire with. There’s a lot of story potential like her contracting Tanta-madness since she bound Cuff to her arm and she starts confronting the darker aspects of herself. Or she deals with the kingdom that made cuff while learning about her dad.
I'm not sure why someone would want to see a sequel to such a dumpster fire as Forspoken. The game is uninspired, the dialogue is absolute cringe and the story is godawful, why would we need a continuation of something that's been proven to be terrible on so many levels? It honestly sounds like these people are having a buyer's remorse effect after realizing they've dropped $60 on a yet another terrible AAA release. I don't even see any potential in any of it's gameplay, combat and world design. Forspoken can be summarized as a third person shooter with magical pellets instead of guns and bullets with a large, barren and pointless world to run around from point A to point B in and shallow game-play mechanics which all in the end when combined result in an awful mess that actively makes you want to stop playing it and go play actual good games instead. Whatever redeemable qualities this game might have had were already realized years and years ago from far better games, so there's no point in trying to push a block figure into a circle hole when that clearly doesn't work out well at all.
@@0uttaS1TE The car crash argument doesn't work when compared with video games, because with car crashes there's always a chance you could probably save someone's life before it's too late if the crash is recent. There's no one to save after a video game has turned out to be terrible, and a failed video game is nothing but that in the end. A tale of disappointment. Forspoken will be forgotten by the time the next year comes around, similar to how everyone has already forgotten about the train wreck that was the awful Saints Row reboot, and a few years before that Balan Wonderworld. Because terrible video games are terrible, and rarely anything else. Especially in these turbulent days of modern gaming.
You know, it's kinda depressing to think about the fact that the guy that wrote this, Gary Whitta, is probably in the Writer's Guild. I guess it should be no surprise that the guy who co-wrote Will Smith's _After Earth_ & _Halo 5: Guardians_ would also turn in this guff. But he clearly has no business in the writing profession.
Actually he explained in a podcast that he was only involved at the start of development, and SE threw out all of his work. So he didn't actually write any of the finished game.
@IESUproductions Yeah, that's kinda what I thought. And for Amy, this definitely feels like a paycheck gig. Sometimes you gotta work on guff to keep the lights on.
To be fair the first story he wrote for the game could of been art & they scrapped it and told him to redo it from the beginning. Just because it didn't match up whatever the Developers were making.
I played this got about an hour maybe 2 hours in and stopped because of how horrible it was gameplay and writing. Then after about 2 days i thought “im gunna play this as if its an ironic comedy.” And it helped me finish the game.
I remember when Hi-Fi Rush came out a certain UA-camr whom I will not name (Cosmonaut Variety Hour) had the audacity to say that Hi-Fi Rush had the same bad dialogue just as Forspoken and ngl that was probably one of the worst takes I've heard from him in since he made that JoJo video
What's funny is, the game was written by one of the supposed best writers in the industry, Amy Hennig who did all the Uncharted games and Legacy of Kain. It's like when you find out Kevin Feige really didn't do anything to help the MCU become successful and it was all secretly James Gunn, the whole time.
32:47 Sin #119 I actually like the idea that, in a fantasy world, using magic has drawbacks. Olas draining herself to death to maintain a fantasy world is interesting, and they could have dealt with that more -- foreshadowing, perhaps. But the main character seems to be able to use magic just as strong, just as often, _without training_, and never even gets a headache. So either the rules are inconsistent (sin) or she's just so instincitively good it feeds into the Mary Sue savior worship (sin). Maybe the fact that glimmers of a good story poking out, only to be painted over with boring tropes and bad writing, is worse than if there'd never been any hope of redemption at all.
I think the devs ran out of time to make an Olas fight and had her die to avoid it. It really sucks because the ads gave the impression Frey was going to fight all the Tantas and the story only has the player fight half of them (the dragon doesn't count). It's like if a Final Fantasy game decided to go into the endgame after you get the fire and water crystals. The expected experience is literally cut in half.
My theory is that Earth Humans Are Special, which is why Frey, a hybrid, is extra special and resists the break because... Magic doesn't work on Earth or something.
He did say that they always borrowed ideas from Star Wars and Frey was like Rey. Most of what you said applies to Rey as well. She literally never was taught to use the Force and could use it incredibly well instinctively unlike ya know someone like Anakin whose father was the Force and he had to learn to use it aside from it augmenting his reflexes passively.
I can't believe they managed to make Chloe from Life is Strange seem likable in comparison. Frey is legitimately one of the most insufferable protagonists I've ever seen, and that's including those from some of the awful self-insert fanfictions I've been talked into reading.
I don’t know what the writers wanted players to like about her. Like Chloe, her defining characteristic is that she’s headstrong. But for that trait to work, the setting needs to be overwhelmingly antagonistic and morally ambiguous to justify it. Neither New York nor the fantasy world have that as Frey always seems to hold more cards then the narrative suggests. As a result, Frey ends up looking too selfish, high-strung, and bitter to find charming.
Life is Strange 2 was better despite the problems at least the story was believable and made you sympathize with almost every character and their situation.
About a year ago, I couldn't wait for this game and became increasingly disappointed and frustrated with each delay. Until the final delay, then it dawned on me, this game was a disaster and I decided not to preorder it after all. When the game came out I heard all the reports about how BAD it was and I believed the reports but never could have imagined it was THIS bad. Holy shit.
I would've added two additional sins at the ending. One, during the "premature ending" sequence, Frey could've gone back to New York for Homer, but simply chose not to, which is very odd considering how hard the game tries to convey how he's the only one in her life. Two, Frey's "letter" to Homer falls flat from the get go when you realize that he *is* alone; sure, it seems he's in the judge's care now, but Frey outright dropped him off at her doorstep, chose not to come back for him and even now is actively choosing not to do anything to bring him with her. That's two potentially emotional messages that fall flat even before they start.
I don't even buy that she cares for her cat, because it was used as a contrived crutch for Frey to earn pity points (and fail) and is never mentioned again until the ending. (Well she does mention Homer several times, but again, as to earn pity points)
I understand the purpose of the Hero's Resolution to become a hero, which is usually done by the first chapter so we can grow to like the character and see them grow as a person but for Forspoken we slog through nearly the whole game in this state. Also not just as a dilemma of her not adjusting to the world or relating to anything , but being nothing but an asshole to everyone since she has a chip on her shoulder and an inferiority complex. Honestly it felt weird she wanted to save anything except her own hide even at the end.
LOL! The end was priceless! Who in their right mind would talk to their cat "telepathically" and expect to send a message to a person. Who was writing this? Was someone sane during the production of this game?
Furthermore, she got ALL the powers of the Tantas............ Why doesn't she just open a fucking portal back home?! That was LITERALLY the most significant power of her mother! Cuff can do it too, and she's apparently "tamed" him now, so why doesn't she just go and get her fucking cat!? Her mother WENT to Earth long enough to meet and then fuck some guy, then she left back to Athia. So it's not like going to Earth means getting cut off from Athia, she can literally jump back and forth AT WILL.
I can only quote a meme about this game: "I killed a studio with my freakin' mind!" I hope the people responsible for writing the dialogue of this game will never get a job ever as a writer.
Youth dialogue actually sounds like this though. It's just when it gets put on full display for how bad it is everyone says its bad writing. No the youth of today just speak very poorly.

Forspoken and Atomic Heart. Two games released in early 2023, were aggressively advertised as truly next-gen, featured unlikable protagonists with talking arm accessories, squandered ideas that could have been awesome, and did the "quit or continue" ending thing.
Consider that Atomic Heart could be forgiven, because russian game industry lives off of cheap ripoffs, which makes AH kind of a breakthrough, while there is absolutely no forgiveness to SquareEnix for releasing *this!*
Literally neither of those things are good. The traversal literally doesn't fucking work, if you wanna see this system functioning correctly, go play Prototype. You'll find yourself not falling constantly because Frey doesn't know how to handle level geometry. And the combat is just shoot the thing to make numbers appear until it's dead over and over with ZERO depth. They didn't even give you really cool magic to spice up the make numbers appear game with. It's just the MOST generic elemental magic they could shit out really fast. It's not even visually impressive. I've seen better looking and more interesting offensive magic in Minecraft mods.
The only "defense" I have for this game is that I like the IDEA of the ending with the protagonist trying to save a construct that was made for war from the rage his masters imbued him with. That the protag would be willing to risk their sanity against said construct's corrupting influence to help him overcome his original purpose and hate. However, ideas are cheap, and the execution was a hot dumpster fire. That is all.
I remember right before the game came out so many people said you were racist and sexist for saying the dialogue in this game will be cringe. After the game came out I heard nothing about that anymore
"Frey isn't affected by the madness" cuz you can't double crazy a chick. She's narcissistic, neurotic, and convinced that she's being wronged. The cuff didn't even have to try to manipulate her, it basically sat around as she did all the work for it. This game is a colossal waste of time, but honestly I dude with cuff. There's not a redeemable character, and it seems like we're watching the last dying whimpers of a world that should have never been written.
I literally forgot this game even existed. This, Atomic Heart, The Calisto Protocol, and so many other $100 million dumpster fires that remain relevant for like a week or two before everyone forgets about them. Only recent game I even remember is Saints Row cause that was my favorite console game franchise prior to launch and it's probably not going to be dethroned as the worst reboot in gaming history for at least another year or two.
@@jakespacepiratee3740 so I guess still not a 100 million dumpster fire. BTW OP, if you're reading this, there is no actual evidence Forspoken cost 100+ million. It was just one of the writers who claimed so, but it is not up to them to know or disclose that amount.
My favorite part of Forespoken was when Frey said "Its Forespokening Time!" and then said something rude to the Cuff for the 1000th time. This game was made, it was programmed, animated, probably not playtested, voiced, and shipped, to become one of the games of all time.
this game feels like a student indie project you find on steam, cosplaying a tripple A game. This game is the definition of early 2000s double A storeshelf filler.
Idk where you got that impression from. To me, it was less "bootstraps" & more "quit thinking you're entitled to other people's shit & you can say & do whatever you want regardless of how it affects others, just because you have a sad backstory." Frey is literally a character who gets nothing but break after break, and she does nothing but treat everyone who gave her those breaks like garbage. Hell, you can make a case that they basically turned Vambrace into a villain because he was coming off more sympathetic than the main character.
What sets Wheatley apart from the other British twist villains is that he was genuinely on your side during the first half and wanted to escape with you. He was just following what he was originally programmed to do... Which was to be an idiot with stupidly bad ideas. When his stupidness was met with a surge of intelligence by being put in as the main computer, it contradicted everything he was initially programmed into being and completely made him go batshit with both literal and figurative corruption. When he was forced out, he went back to his original programming the ‘task’ that he set for himself, which was why he wanted to apologize at the end for going crazy. Portal did amazing with making these robotic aspects seem so natural to the point where seeing the patterns is like finding an easter egg and not just having the robots be your typical ‘beep boop protocol protocol all your base now belong to us’. To think that Forspoken’s protagonist is so bland that robots from a 10+ year old game has more depth, personality, and likability than she does
This was so inspiring! For starters I decided to talk to my ring (as I don't have a cuff); it doesn't respond yet, but I'll see what the future brings.
Y’know what this game’s story kind of reminds me of? The John Carter movie. With several differences of course, but it’s still the same story of ‘MC gets launched into another world after touching magic object and is at first arrested and/or belittled by everyone until they use their fancy powers nobody else has to fix everything and become the savior-leader of a world they barely know’. Except Frey is infinitely more aggravating to listen to than anyone else in that movie
My favorite part about games like this are the people who defend them like their lives depend on it. No my dude you just either have awful taste or are in denial but that is not a good game. Same with fallout 76, starfield, suicide squad, etc etc.
I love that scene upon arriving in the city. The game cuts to black and then opens with Frey in cuffs like "What the hell?", like the character herself just went through a bad time skip. Frey doesn't even know what happened, because there's no explaining how these basic guards managed to apprehend someone that can sling magic while still thinking she's some kinda monster. This is where any decent writer would go, "Yeah. This isn't gonna work." and scrapped that court sequence. Unfortunately, there were no decent writers working on this project, so the scene way forced in without rhyme or reason.
That was the first thing I asked when I saw her restrained after getting her powers. "Wait, why doesn't she just break this piece of wood on her arms? She JUST fought a demon bear, but she can't best WOOD? Was this game written by Shyamalan?"
The character writing in this game I feel can be very telling of what the actual writers think of their audience. If this is what they thought was relatable them then I’m worried about future plans with square’s new CEO and other franchise plans.
@@Jeezes718 It doesn't; they still have their ethics committee, the one that banned Tifa's breasts, and they're still slowly (not that slowly anymore) turning their flagship franchise into a cheap Devil May Cry knock-off. Square-Enix is ruined.

@@Jeezes718 "ruined is a major overstatement." Not even close. "Hack and slash games existed before dmc, calling every game that uses that model a rip off is a bit much." I never did anything of the sort. I never said that about Darksiders, I never said that about Nioh, or many, many other games that fit within that genre. "As much as I love turn-based rpg's they are far too restrictive with what they want to put into ff games nowadays." 'What they want to put into ff games' has already been ruining Final Fantasy. You don't jettison core concepts of your flagship IP, completely rewrite the mechanics of your game, and expect to keep your core audience. "And this is by far not the first game square has made that uses that sort of gameplay and they have been doing fine." They did fine for a few games from a spin-off series. Kingdom Hearts was great, but Kingdom Hearts isn't Final Fantasy, and more importantly, _Final Fantasy isn't Devil May Cry_ , nor should it be made to in any way resemble that or any other hack-and-slash games. The last great Final Fantasy that Square-Enix produced, was Final Fantasy X. Every game after has been a mark of downward progress for the quality of the main franchise as a whole.
Stupid Anon a problem with your argument is that you aren't giving examples. You say 'what they are putting in games is ruining ff', like what? My biggest gripe as of late has been the writing, which has no baring on gameplay. So what is it that's ruining it? Also, what I meant about 'what they want to put into the game' is that as the series continues, graphics improve, and game engines become capable of more and more things gameplay wise, but, as I said turn based gameplay is restrictive, with everything games have been shown to be capable of there is no demand for a gameplay style that literally has everyone waiting their turn and selecting from a menu. The mmo style of 11 and 14 might be a better alternative, but that would reach a limited audience. Your statement that they 'jettison a core concept' fails to take into consideration the harsh truth that gamers being who they are today wouldn't buy a turn based rpg of final fantasy's scale. They made 10 main games and numerous spin off using that particular style. If they continue to do the same thing over and over indefinitely, people will grow tired of the lack of individuality and innovation. Regardless of how Final Fantasy started, Square has to make changes in order to actually sell their product because, at the end of the day, they are still a company. If no one buys their games, they don't make money. If they don't make money, they can't afford to make games. And then, instead of getting something different, you get nothing. In regards to your statement about 'the last great ff game they made' being ffx, I would disagree, ffxiv has been doing quite well, although I imagine your probably one of those people that saysbit doesn't count because it's and mmo, correct? This is not the first ff game to use this system. Just because it does doesn't mean it's becoming Devil may cry, but they still operate noticeably differently. Other ff games that use this sort of gameplay, with the exception of ffxv, have received positive reception from gamers, so your statement of them losing their core players is very much an overexaggeration. The harsh reality is fewer, and fewer games are able to successfully pull off turn based rpg gameplay, and as much as I'd like to see more if for no reason other than nostalgia, that's not happening. But that's the harsh reality. We can either accept it or be mad all the time.
Oof, I knew this game was bad, but I didn't know that even the recap would be a chore to listen to/watch. This isn't even one of those so bad it's kind of good types of games. It's one that you quit at some point and never pick up again. And no, this isn't a jab at you Dartigan. I applaud you for putting this together.
I swear this game has at least one she hulk writer, cus that whole "I did that" scene where she's just actively ignoring it wasnt just her is written the exact same as the she hulk talks with bruce in the lab scene where she's like "so im better than you" and its every bit as bad for all the same reasons
You mean runes on your clothes enhancing your powers? Or runes tattooed on your skin enhancing your powers? Or runes on your weapons enhancing your powers? Or runes in a menu enhancing your powers? Hooooooow is this different from other games again? They literally just give you bonuses to combat too, so it's NOT like it's actually changing anything, just making your numbers bigger. EXACTLY the same as every other game. Is it because they very slightly change a part of her character model, THAT YOU CANNOT SEE?
I enjoyed this game, but mainly because I set the difficulty to easy and turned on auto dodge, so I felt like a magic parkour Dynasty Warriors character the whole time. Eventually the bad dialogue just becomes hilarious and enjoyable in its own way, like a bad B movie. I also genuinely didn't catch the Cuff twist beforehand, but the parentage one was so obviously telegraphed. The Hall of Exposition Dumps was clearly the "Oh no, we forgot to put all this in the game, well here you go, because if we gave any of this earlier the twist would be SUPER OBVIOUS."
atomic heart i actually liked its just was too short if you arnt a lore hunter looking for every scrap of info the main story is only like 7 to 10 hours.
"forespoken is one of those unforgettable adventures" It certainly is unforgettable, in the same way that remembering waking up after a bender covered in blood on the floor of a strange place with a traffic cone on your head next to a severed arm on the floor and only having scattered memories of doing something unspeakable during the previous 36 hours is when you're being led to the electric chair on your execution day.
38:28 is probably the most impressive thing I've heard about this game, only Squeenix could have found a way to fuck up a normal crash. Edit: Oh god, the stupid chat with her cat at the end, AND that she kept the mass murdering demon alive. Ugh, I just can't, what an awful game.
27:47 Not a defense, but i can see the potential of the game's idea of what it could have been if it wasn't made out of the scraps of canceled Final Fantasy games. My ideas are mostly story based, but why not lean into her being an actually shitty person or make it more like she's on the fence. Let her do shitty things in game and cuff softly encourages the actions. He could be written so they he comes across wanting her to 'do the right thing' but quietly encouraging her to go nuts. You also forgot to sin that frey's mom, who can open portals at will, didn't offer to save anyone else. She also tossed her baby with a fair amount of force through that portal. Finally, she had to have an idea of what was waiting for frey in our world as an orphan. Not even accounting for knowledge of our world, being an orphan in magic land likely still sucked shit. Give her to a friend in magic land or drop her in new york as an orphan. Honestly, it's just a question how you would like her raised. With a good friend with notes how to open portals or at the mercy of the system here. I dislike the 'toss the kid and hope for the best' stick Worst is naruto How in the ever loving hell did he go 15 F@CKING YEARS without a single person explaining "Your parents were cool, they loved you." is still mind boggling.
I wish it was Truck-kun that would send her into this other realm, at least we'd have a decent loop gif of seeing her get flatten. Seriously though I legit forgot about this game until I saw the video in my feed.
The Tantas are technically her aunts and they were connected so they sense a fourth family member that they shouldn't. Since she was sent away. They explained that she's immuned to the break because it only targeted toward their people and she is a half breed.
You know the sad thing is that the story of this game actually had a lot of promise, and might have been enjoyably decent if the main character wasn't so damn insufferable. 39:04 I suspect the problem is that you can't technically kill a demon because they're immortal...of course that is also highly subjective depending on the story.
I imagine that because the judge is the one sympathetic judge in America, she allowed the dress code violation in exchange for moving court proceedings on faster. That and as a homeless orphan she lacks formal wear so the winter hat is probably the least of the dress code problems.
3:20 About that. I think the reverse also happened and Star Wars ripped off Square Enix's game, Kingdom Hearts BBS, when making the new trilogy. At least in terms of characters. Kylo Ren is Terra in how he's manipulated by an evil bald man who has clones of himself (Xehnaort/Snoke). They both end up putting on iconic armor and a cape. They even fight their masters when they "fall to darkness", who are BOTH played by Mark Hamill. Rei is Aqua in that she needs to deal with everyone's issues and is generally seen as the most competent. They even fight evil-mirrored reflections of themselves. Aqua did that in KH 0.2 in 2017, Rei did it 2 years later. Even Ventus has a weird correlation with Finn in how they were used as pawns by the bad guys when they were young. And even more so when they both have a rival with a fancy reflective helmet (Vanitas/female Trooper Officer).
You know what?I think Square landed the ultimate vision of a modern eastern media with Forspoken >diversity for the sake of having a diverse cast and thats that >using a overused genre in fiction and somehow missing the whole mark of the genre in question >a MainCharacter with a design able to check as many boxes as possible while having the worst personality any inteligent life-form could ever have >a plot that falls flat on its own face cause thats just not the priority at all when creating the game all she lacked was being invincible and perfect in every single way and thats it,you have the modern-perfect-diverse-hollywood image of a female protagonist
@@aurawolf2221 eh, don’t worry about them. Besides, cancel culture only has power, if you let them have it (although they occasionally get it right, every few years)
I noticed Dartigan's opening narrations get more and more elaborate with each video, and the one in this is the best one yet for setting up how much this game sucks.
Square Enix wanting to create a game that had a protagonist from a modern setting felt off from the beginning, from Frey's dialogue to poor mannerisms that doesn't show signs of a sympathetic character at times. A shame, I was hoping Forspoken to be a good title.
I love the absolute disrespect Dartigan gives this shitty character. She was pretty much crammed down our throats while the devs expected us to praise her for being, what, relatable?
Whats ironic is that nobody who could potentially relate to Frey, for beign homeless, unwanted and unloved, are the exact people who could never play this game, as those homeless people obviously dont have the expensive equipment and computer programs to run this game
@@jakespacepiratee3740 truly, you think you’d try to connect to the people who actually play your game, but I guess that’s why woke games tend to suck. They’re too focused on “diversity and inclusion” that they don’t even realize who they’re making it for.
Another thing odd about this game is the setup. Frey is basically Ella Balinska, and both are 5'11", well-spoken, young women who are an 8 or an 8.5 in looks. So just by genetics alone, they're already luckier than most people. But then you add in their supposed intelligence and people-skills as well, and they're already doing better than 95% of the population. Her race is even irrelevant, considering Frey lives in New York City, and not West Virginia or something. If they wanted us to relate to the protagonist more, they would've made them a 5'8" overweight unattractive white male, aka "the average gamer," because casting Ella Balinska, a literal 6' model with beauty most people can never obtain, as "a down-on-her-luck lower-class protagonist" is as out-of-touch as casting Chris Evans as a stalker-incel who follows a woman to Europe after one date in "Ghosted." If this was the real world, Frey would be making $2 million a month with a safe-for-work OnlyFans and another $1 million a month on Twitch. This game fails even with setting up its protagonist.
Watched this again after playing. There are THREE bodies of water, one to the north in Junoon and the other to the south that you mentioned, and a third to the west on the edge of the map. I liked this game. Turn on auto-evade and the game kinda plays itself, which isn't always a bad thing. I skipped most of the dialogue and it made stuff more tolerable. Spellcrafting was really fun and took me to the endgame, being challenges that alter the gameplay and push you to new strategies or teach you new techniques. The very gameplay focused nature of the title, centered on parkour and combat, with upgrades making tangible differences made the experience rewarding for me. I probably won't play it again, but I don't regret breaking the $20 bill.
She spent the entire game talking about how she’s an orphan while somehow ignoring the part where she literally has no one in her life in New York that actually gives a damn about her. It would’ve made more sense for her to come to this realization in the first 3 chapters and then realize that Tanta Clinta was her mother around that same time. Another thing is Freys age. She acts like a teenager yet is 22 years old and should’ve realized that she has no one left and should skip town years ago
what's worse is that she's the best looking person in the game and she's all alone in New York. by all accounts wanting to go back to a world like that when you're in a magic world with magic powers is retarded
So i'm not a fan of it, but the entire theme of the game is isolation vs community. Athea is all about community because it's literally all they have left. They constantly are involved with and support each other and have done so for the past two decades. Frey is mostly alone, and thinks that's the only way she'll be safe. Even when the judge or people of Athea reach out a hand, she rejects it because when she takes it, she keeps getting hurt (befriend the child, watch her die. Connect with the healer, watch her call Frey selfish and worthless. Gets close to cuff, watch him try to murder her)...which, yeah, she DOES keep getting burned. But the game tries to say that the joy of community is worth the pain, and that isolation is actually way more pain than anything else. Those that shut themselves away or try to handle problems themselves wind up making things worse for them. The tantas hide in their domains but cause the break. Freys mom distances herself from her kid but becomes a dragon. Frey becomes.... Well, Frey, which is just pain as a person. And even the old half-corrupted guy, he doesn't make progress and has his corruption spread because he's by himself. Hell, even cuff himself is an example of this. When he was initially summoned, he tried to do it all himself and got beaten. When he was released, the same thing happened and he got trapped in cuffs. When he then tried to concoct this whole plan with Frey, same thing. He constantly is by himself and doesn't ever try to reach out to anyone, even his other demons. And he fails, ultimately (according to the game anyways. He reduced a country's population to about 50 and the size of a small town. I'd say he won). Everything about the dialog, the actions of all the characters, and even the setting itself, is this theme on repeat. It's everything, basically. Even the fact that Freys mom is the only one to fend off the corruption for so long, is literally because she was the LAST one to completely be alone. Everything comes down to that. Intentional isolation vs actually building a community and family to live WITH and not AROUND ... it's just done in an asinine way.
Another great video, but one minor complaint: you need better editing on your subtitles. Half the time when I look down at the text, there are pretty glaring spelling mistakes, it's not something I would usually mention but I had to once I saw "metal" misspelled as "mettle". Great stuff as always regardless!
this recent trend of not allowing attractive characters in game needs to go,like for real the main character looks like shes never bathed in her life and the rest of the ppl are busted. we play games for fantasy, not for mediocrity lol
I think using an Alice in Wonderland reference in an isekai should be a sin. Especially because Lewis Carrol wrote it as a treatise against non-euclidian maths and not as escapism for the socially afflicted.
This wouldn't be the first time I've seen a game suffer a "crash" whole still being playable, actually. I used to play RWBY GE (yes, I know, you don't need to say anything) and sometimes in a level transition, a crash message would appear, saying the game crashed and needed to restart, yet you could still play the game as long as you didn't interact with the crash message. It does take a special something for a game to crash, yet not crash at the same time.

This games biggest problem is that Frey can barely relate to the moral at the end of the game. They spent too much time making her an unlikeable asshole and not enough time driving home the fact that she has nobody. Them just mentioning that she’s an orphan a thousand times wasn’t enough to convince anyone.

The Company that made Forespoken shut down, and along with being a laughing stock to the general public…no sequel.
@@jakespacepiratee3740 That sucks. There is DLC coming out for it though. A trailer dropped a while ago.
@@superplayerex2431 When you see a car crash, don't you want to take a peek at the aftermath?
@@0uttaS1TE The car crash argument doesn't work when compared with video games, because with car crashes there's always a chance you could probably save someone's life before it's too late if the crash is recent. Forspoken will be forgotten by the time the next year comes around, similar to how everyone has already forgotten about the train wreck that was the awful Saints Row reboot, and a few years before that Balan Wonderworld.
It's really not that bad.
The writing in general (not the dialog) IS quite awful, but the dialog is honestly fine
Life is Strange's climax was the easiest decision in the game because of how annoying Chloe is throughout the game.
Consider that both Life is Strange and Forespoken were published by SquareEnix. I wonder what is their criteria for who to fund/publish?
I must be the only one who liked chloe... (since its a game and I wanted the Prescotts to feckin die, I chose you-know-what option).
They say the first story for the Game was bad that they had to scrap it only to deliver this.
I can only quote a meme about this game:

Forspoken and Atomic Heart.
Two games released in early 2023, were aggressively advertised as truly next-gen, featured unlikable protagonists with talking arm accessories, squandered ideas that could have been awesome, and did the "quit or continue" ending thing.
Consider that Atomic Heart could be forgiven, because russian game industry lives off of cheap ripoffs, which makes AH kind of a breakthrough, while there is absolutely no forgiveness to SquareEnix for releasing *this!*
The combat and traversal are pretty good, but everything else, from world-size to the writing, needed to be cut by 90%.
The only thing I need to say is "Take the F money lady!"
“Gotta find Homer first!”
Even the Cat agrees.

What sets Wheatley apart from the other British twist villains is that he was genuinely on your side during the first half and wanted to escape with you. When he was forced out, he went back to his original programming the ‘task’ that he set for himself, which was why he wanted to apologize at the end for going crazy.

To think that Forspoken’s protagonist is so bland that robots from a 10+ year old game has more depth, personality, and likability than she does
This was so inspiring! For starters I decided to talk to my ring (as I don't have a cuff); it doesn't respond yet, but I'll see what the future brings.
The talking bracelet can't hold a candle to Grimoire Weiss.
The problem is they messed up Weiss in the translation, they totally changed his personality.
Malignant Miasma? Oh you mean New York Smog
Honestly, getting community service for your third strike is kind of harsh in New York. You normally don't get that till your 12th arrest.
Except Frey is infinitely more aggravating to listen to than anyone else in that movie
and plus, that movie is actually good.
i laughed so hard when you mentioned, that you've played many games with a teen protag, but fey was the only believable one, but she's 21.
Well, square liquidated the team that made this game shortly after it released if that tells you anything.
@@Jeezes718 It doesn't; they still have their ethics committee, the one that banned Tifa's breasts, and they're still slowly (not that slowly anymore) turning their flagship franchise into a cheap Devil May Cry knock-off. Square-Enix is ruined.
@@StupidAnon-gn8ih ruined is a major overstatement.
Hack and slash games existed before dmc, calling every game that uses that model a rip off is a bit much.
As much as I love turn-based rpg's they are far too restrictive with what they want to put into ff games nowadays. And this is by far not the first game square has made that uses that sort of gameplay and they have been doing fine.
@@Jeezes718 "ruined is a major overstatement."
Not even close.
"Hack and slash games existed before dmc, calling every game that uses that model a rip off is a bit much."
I never did anything of the sort. I never said that about Darksiders, I never said that about Nioh, or many, many other games that fit within that genre.
"As much as I love turn-based rpg's they are far too restrictive with what they want to put into ff games nowadays."
'What they want to put into ff games' has already been ruining Final Fantasy. You don't jettison core concepts of your flagship IP, completely rewrite the mechanics of your game, and expect to keep your core audience.
"And this is by far not the first game square has made that uses that sort of gameplay and they have been doing fine."
They did fine for a few games from a spin-off series.
I've always been impressed with the effort put into the intro titles
The father not being around is the best social commentary joke you could make here...
The fact that you mentioned a Paracite Eve remake. You trully know the good stuff.
Please make it possible. That game was a underrated masterpiece
Feels like games are getting even worse lately, coinciding with the price hike from $60 to $70 and higher for games that are not worth it.
I swear this game has at least one she hulk writer, cus that whole "I did that" scene where she's just actively ignoring it wasnt just her is written the exact same as the she hulk talks with bruce in the lab scene where she's like "so im better than you" and its every bit as bad for all the same reasons
Honestly I loved the idea of runes on your fingernails enhancing your Powers just because it's different from the same stuff every other game does
You mean runes on your clothes enhancing your powers?
Or runes tattooed on your skin enhancing your powers?
Or runes on your weapons enhancing your powers?
Or runes in a menu enhancing your powers?
Hooooooow is this different from other games again? They literally just give you bonuses to combat too, so it's NOT like it's actually changing anything, just making your numbers bigger. EXACTLY the same as every other game.
Is it because they very slightly change a part of her character model, THAT YOU CANNOT SEE?
I always knew this game was bad, but wow😂😂 my expectations have been decimated and brought to a whole new depth
Truly one of the games of all time. I honestly forgot about this game and Atomic Heart until Dartigan uploaded these videos.
atomic heart i actually liked its just was too short if you arnt a lore hunter looking for every scrap of info the main story is only like 7 to 10 hours.
Love your videos, Dartigan. Keep doing great job!
I can’t believe you managed to squeeze it all into a 40 minute video.
"forespoken is one of those unforgettable adventures"
It certainly is unforgettable, in the same way that remembering waking up after a bender covered in blood on the floor of a strange place with a traffic cone on your head next to a severed arm on the floor and only having scattered memories of doing something unspeakable during the previous 36 hours is when you're being led to the electric chair on your execution day.
Almost feels like TVTropes should rename their "Gainax Ending" trope to "Forspoken Ending".
"Bon Appetit, Bitch." That just took me out. lmaoooooo
Square should thank Sweet Baby Stink for helping close one of their studios.
I like the actress she 100% suffers from getting bad roles.
I dislike the 'toss the kid and hope for the best' stick
Worst is naruto
How in the ever loving hell did he go 15 F@CKING YEARS without a single person explaining "Your parents were cool, they loved you." is still mind boggling.
I wish it was Truck-kun that would send her into this other realm, at least we'd have a decent loop gif of seeing her get flatten.
Seriously though I legit forgot about this game until I saw the video in my feed.
You know your mom loves ya when they open a portal to new york city. "Kick the baby :DD"
And why is Frey allowed to wear that winter hat in the courtroom?
I imagine that because the judge is the one sympathetic judge in America, she allowed the dress code violation in exchange for moving court proceedings on faster. That and as a homeless orphan she lacks formal wear so the winter hat is probably the least of the dress code problems.
7:53 also the thugs were kind enough to write the notes invertedly, otherwise frey wouldn't be able to read it.
My argument of defense for this game:
The cats are pretty cool.
I mean, if i was homeless and in new york and i had a bag full of money i'd also use the money to get out of new york instead of building a life there
About dang time, I've been waiting for this video ever since he mentioned sinning it in his atomic heart video.
Don't you fucking dare to compare Aqua to Rey.
@@Pikashades Just wait until it's revealed Aqua is MoM's granddaughter.
Xehanort wasn't voiced by Mark Hamill. Xehanort was voiced by Leonard Nimoy, (may he rest in peace).

You know what?I think Square landed the ultimate vision of a modern eastern media with Forspoken
>diversity for the sake of having a diverse cast and thats that
>using a overused genre in fiction and somehow missing the whole mark of the genre in question
>a MainCharacter with a design able to check as many boxes as possible while having the worst personality any inteligent life-form could ever have
>a plot that falls flat on its own face cause thats just not the priority at all when creating the game
all she lacked was being invincible and perfect in every single way and thats it,you have the modern-perfect-diverse-hollywood image of a female protagonist
This game was basically "You should feel bad for this main character because... female" it's also so funny to me just how much Square is failing.

The real problem of this movie is that someone put a game in the middle of it
Square Enix wanting to create a game that had a protagonist from a modern setting felt off from the beginning, from Frey's dialogue to poor mannerisms that doesn't show signs of a sympathetic character at times. A shame, I was hoping Forspoken to be a good title.
I feel happy everytime you post a video. You truly make my/our day
I love the absolute disrespect Dartigan gives this shitty character.

The bar is set so low they somehow tripped over it
5/10 at best, definitely no where near an 8/10.
You're scripts are great man and they've only gotten more crisp with time.
At least the characters of final fantasy 16 at their ages.
what's worse is that she's the best looking person in the game and she's all alone in New York. by all accounts wanting to go back to a world like that when you're in a magic world with magic powers is retarded
This game single handedly made me want to experience real life more than the actual game

"Screw children and cats... I'm in a bad mood" lmfaoo
Intentional isolation vs actually building a community and family to live WITH and not AROUND
... it's just done in an asinine way.
Oh hell yeah! I was looking forward to you sinning this game.
Thank you for taking this game apart, Darts. But one little nit to pick.
29:57 "But thou must" came from Dragon Quest, not Final Fantasy.
The game is about teaching Homer the cat that he cannot give up on hope.
