  • This video shows step-by-step how to replace an alternator in a 2011 Honda Pilot. This video works for almost all Honda’s with a V6 engine as alternator location has stayed the same over the years. There may be a few differences but nothing significant.
    Thanks for watching!

    2012 Honda Pilot Tips:
    I just did this install and used this video as guidance. There were a few things that were slightly different.
    1. The biggest thing is the belt tensioner is a different style. It doesn't have the 19mm hex tab (or maybe mine was broken off). I used a half drive socket wrench with a 14mm socket directly on the upper tensioner pully. It moved fairly easily. To do so, you need to remove a small ground wire bracket that is right in the way, and gently move the AC tubing out of the way.
    2. I didn't need to pull the tensioner off, it was not in the way once the belt was removed. This is likely due to it not having the hex tab shown in the video.
    3. If you really don't want to remove the power steering pump hose, you can get away with taking the reservoir off the bracket, and removing the bracket. You will also need to disconnect the main A/C bracket at the top of the engine near the fuse box. Then you should have enough room to squeeze the alternator between these two devices. However, removing the PS hose would probably give you a little more room.
    4. As mentioned in another comment, if your new alternator has a larger lower bushing than the original, you can use a small hammer to tap the bushing found in the mount on the motor, and it will slide out allowing room for the new one to fit. You shouldn't need to file anything down.
    Cheers and thanks for the video!

      Replaced on a 2012 Pilot also. Agree with the above tips. The belt tensioner system is different than the 2011. Does not need to come off. I found it easier to remove the PS hose from the overflow tank. I drained the fluid into a plastic container. Lost very little onto the engine. I had a problem with the larger lower bushing. I found it very easy to grind it down with a Dremel rotary tool- Worked like a charm. Great video and tips for the 2012 model year.

    Thanks for posting, just changed the alternator in my 2009 Pilot without removing the power steering reservoir or tensioner. Simply removed the belt using the tensioner, and the bracket for the coolant and power steering reservoir, then moved them out of the way without unhooking hoses. Wasn't too bad of a job, and went quick.

    Awesome video. I originally spoke to a auto parts store sales person and he talked me out of replacing this alternator. He suggested I go to a service station to have it done professionally. After watching your video, I decided to take on this project myself. I watched your video one time. I had to watch a small portion a second time. The job took me 3 1/2 hours. And that included driving to pick up the parts. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this. I found the job to be fun.

    THANKS RIX. Very helpful. Just completed the Alternator swap on my 2011 pilot following your steps. A few notes - when I took the old alternator off, I used a digital caliper to measure the size of the piece that takes the bottom bolt on the alternator (that fits in the bracket on the engine block). Once I got the new alternator, I found it was a little bigger (1.78 vs. 1.83). I spent a few minutes filing down this part before putting in the new alternator. It fit perfect after it was filed down. Also, another tip, I used a wrench with a pipe for leverage to relieve tension on the tensioner pulleys. Then I used a small ratchet strap to hold it in place while I removed the belt. This also helped me get enough clearance to remove the alternator without having to remove the tensioner pulley. Thanks again for the great video.

    I also did this job and did NOT need to take the tensioner off. Had a bit of difficulty getting the bottom bolt hole on the new alternator to align (was catching on the due to the black bushing in the left mount hole) but eventually shimmied it and got it to squeeze in. Thanks for the video, RIX.

    You are THE MAN!! No other video said to wiggle the alternator out so we didn't. And then we couldn't get it back in. So we used a break away bar and a hammer to push that bushing I think it's called to move back out so the new alternator would go in. So again thank you!

    I have had intermittent hums/whines with a small degree of smoking over the last two months. Of course the problem went away while taking in for service at two different garages. At both garages I was told I had some minor leaks around some gaskets which I declined since they were very minor. I did end up replacing the serpentine belt and timing belt - they just needed done regardless. I explained to both the hum/whine and smoke from lower front part of engine and that it happened at the same time. Finally, today, my wife says the battery light is on and I have her pull up to my office building and not kill the engine. I also hear the hum and there is smoke coming out yet again. Managed to get it to the closer garage (not my preferred for big jobs), and called the other garage and they suggested the alternator and pulley, and this video seems to confirm as much. Would have been nice to have heard that the first time around instead of it getting to this point. Same information was provided to them except for the addition of the battery light. This video certainly sounds like my whine and the location of the alternator fits with the general location of where I was getting smoke.

    Thanks RIX. I didn't take the belt tensioner off because the tensioner bolt was very difficult to get off. So I took off the plastic window washer fluid tank (two 10 mm bolts and three wire connectors) and the upper alternator connecting bracket (one 12 mm bolt), and the alternator came out fairly easy. I had to replace the alternator twice in 24 hours because the first AutoZone remanufactured replacement (Fed Ex delivered to my home) was faulty (11.5 volt output).. So I had AutoZone test the second replacement alternator (tested twice) BEFORE I spent two hours putting it in the SUV. Limited lifetime replacement. Less than $200, but it took a full day+ to do.

  • @williambaldwin3311
    @williambaldwin3311 2 роки тому +1

    OK so I had a 2013 Honda Pilot. You will NOT find that 19mm torque nut on the tension pulley. You will need to use a 13mm (I believe) on the top pulley with a long handle drive wrench and push back toward the rear, that will allow the belt to just barely come off. I didnt remove the pully. I then removed the bolts to the alternator. NOTE there also is a small bracket you on the PSGR side wall attached the the AC unit you have to remove only 1 10mm small nut. You have to remove that to get your socket wrench on that top pully. after you get the alternator free you have to twist and move it forward AND at the same time use that socket wrench on that pully to move it back so the alternator will come free moving it toward the passenger fender. (IT will be a puzzle to twist and turn and moving AC hose to get it out) - its HEAVY and hard to handle to get it up and out. Now getting the new one in really sucks because getting it back in you have a exact distance between the engine block nut hole and the bracket for the alternator to fit in. Clean and scrap between them a little to make sure no debris and grease those areas as you have to pinch that alternator back in between them and you have to move it millimeters one way or another to squeeze it back in. I had to tap on the alternator a little to get it to start to go. It will take a little bit but once it goes you got it just right. Then you have to align the bottom bolt up and the alternator just right for the bolt to slide through. There is enough room to get a air wrench with a 14mm socket and spin it while moving the alternator to get the bolt to pop through. The rest is back to the video after that and putting that little bracket by the AC sidewall back on.
