I keep coming back even 7 years later! The very best real-world "How to" for an alternator on the planet. His many years of working and solving problems allows him to distill it down to just what we need to know without all the fringe. He just showed us how to test just about everything with just a multimeter. We owe you! Thank you.

Super job! U covered all the bases. One tiny thing I might add is the one way clutch that a lot of new alternators have. A Honda Fit gave me a fit. It was slipping and not charging when heavily loaded. Sitting at idle I had 14 volts. When the fans kicked on, it wouldn't keep up. Once again, great teaching!!

The symbol you pointed out on the Ford diagram is actually a capacitor. It's there to absorb voltage spikes mainly to prevent radio interference and to keep the voltage output steady. This is an excellent video--very informative. Keep up the good work!

Awesome video. Very informative. Extremely helpful. Great explanation of working your way throughout the entire charging cycle to make clear what makes it work. Before I could only say motor spins alternator which charges the battery. I know there are a lot of wiring diagrams out there. At least now, I actually can make sense of one too. Super neat knowing what I've learned right now. I'm in the process of installing a car stereo system with multiple amplifiers and batteries. I've seen other car audio youtubers show all the "where's" to make connections but leave out the "why's" or "how" it works. I just want to learn more now. Thank you so much brother.

Yeah, you are right mentioning operation of charging warming lamp which includes both S terminal and L terminal of the same connector. These terminals which are on the same connector are often overlooked when diagnosing alternator. Relying only on reading voltage at battery terminal is not enough for thorough diagnosing, especially when issues arise during the period of charging warming lamp.

have a 2012 Dodge Journey 3.5L. I get the following codes C212A-17, P0563, P063A. I removed the alternator and had it bench tested at Advance Auto. The test said all the internal components were good (diodes, voltage regulator, windings, brushes and the overall health of the alternator was good Tension on the belt is good and replaced belt as an added measure..I was driving on hwy 75 to sioux city
Iowa. Going 70mph ac on radio on cruize on headlights on. The radio went off.. Abs light and break light came on and then batteries light came on cruise control went off then break light abs light went off but battery light stayed on. I was able turn cruise back on. Turn car off turn back on everthing was back to normal. In your video you talk about to wires that lead to the alternator from the PCM in which you turn the ignition to the on position and using a test light find the active wire. I have two wires running from the PCM to the alternator (Alternator Field Control and the otherAlternator Sensor) By turning the ignition switch to the ON position what one should light up. The test light I have a computer safe test light which will tell me which is ground (green) and the Red for positive. Could you probe these terminals with it disconnected from the alternator and the car running? What other things should I be looking at?

Great videos! Thanks. If the alternator shall charge the battery, it has to deliver at least 13,8 volts. The electromotive force to charge the battery is only present at 13,8 volts or above. Maintaining charge of a fully charged battery can take place at 13,6 volts. I think it is important to emphasize the 13,8 volts as people may think that charging will take place at 13 og 13,6 volts.

All your videos are just superb - 10/10 with your clear, no nonsense explanations!!! I have a Denso alternator (the Land Rover has done 162,000 miles with the original alternator) - just yesterday the dash red battery warning light came on! With the engine running I measured 11.8V across the battery and then 2 seconds later it went up to 12.9V (also heard a slight noise when this change occurred). So suspecting the alternator which I will remove tomorrow. Isn't it likely to be the carbon brushes (brush box) - surely they're probably worn out by now?

Here's a tale of two stories about alternators that I ran across.
The first is my GFs car. We just had the valve cover gaskets replaced after they have been leaking for a few months. I then proceeded to clean off the engine, top and bottom. I used Simple Green and a tire foam cleaner then blew off all the crud with my compressor. Her alternator was putting out 13.5 vdc to 14 vdc but after the cleaning, it stayed at 14.5 vdc.
The second was my old Pathfinder. During the winter, I started the car up and when I turned on the heater blower, it sounded like a supercharger! Then I turned on the headlights and they went super bright then blew! This Pathfinder had a wire from the output of the alternator to the positive clamp on the battery. The continuity from the alternator to the battery was bad at that connection so all the alternator output was going right back into the wiring harness. On a side note, the dealer wanted to change the whole wiring harness in the engine bay. I found an auto electric shop that changed out the positive connector for $20.
