We just returned from visiting CHS area for a week. This is our third time vacationing there. It is one of our top choices to move to when we finally do relocate. Each vacation I spend a day or two driving around to different areas just to get a feel for that area. Folly proper, and recently Mt P are out of our budget. James Island and Johns Island seem to vary widely. I had not researched but I was guessing the school district was not good there. However we do not have children, and given the lower housing cost we felt like John's Island might be the spot for us, but that all hinged on the location on John's Island. We saw some homes off Maybank Hwy which seemed to be "not too bad" to and from. Some of John's Island was just too difficult to drive back and forth from if going to Folly or into downtown or Mt P. I was happy to see more restaurants and breweries going in on James closer to John's. Still I got the feeling John's will always be behind James for home values, and that was from infrastructure and location inconvenience.
Really nice to hear you've found what looks like a great new place for your family. Appreciate your openness discussing your personal decisions like this.
I am researching Johns Island in relation to its origination, I have to say I am surprised that this much is going on, I can't wait to visit. I have never been in any Carolina, I am like Wowed at this concept.
Enjoyed the video. I've lived on Johns Island 10 years. Lived in Charleston 23 years. I love my neighborhood, love my house there. I consider moving due to the lack of planning and insfrastructure for Johns Island. Too many people now. Many more commercial businesses, and too many one lane roads. They have not updated the roads at all. Roads are crowded and packed with cars. It's not like it used to be. Can take 30 minutes, what used to take 5-10 minutes to leave the island. My kids go to school off the island, so that does not matter. My kids live in Dorchester County DD2 Schools. I consider moving for two big reasons: one to be closer to my kids (they are 9 and 11). Will be 12 miles closer to my kids, will take 30 minutes to go see them, instead of 50 minutes. Second, I will be much closer to my work. Instead of 30 minutes to work , it will be under 10 minutes to/from work in North Charleston. I love the water, but will not be much farther from the Beach moving to West ashley.
First…great name! I completely agree. Traffic is getting bad. I loved being there watching all the local businesses come onto the island and start to gain an identity. We still have a ton of friends on Johns and visit often. But being closer to your kids is 1000% a great reason.
I don't disagree with what you've said here. For some they'd rather not live where they shop or don't want to drive through the shopping traffic on the way to the beach. So to get to Kiawah Beachwalker is a much less trafficked road than to Folly. It's great to have both choice though.
Our old neighborhood, I gave the HOA a heads up my parents were visiting in their 25 ft RV for a few days to visit their grandchildren. A week later I got a violation notice in the mail.
Personal preference and price. We like this side of Charleston, most of our friends live over here. While cost is more than Johns, it tends to get even higher in Mt P and on Daniel’s Island.
7 and a half years.😂 I grew up on John's Island (Chisholm Rd.) when a lot of the roads were still dirt, no stores except Limehouse gas station and Ohlandts Red & White. Two drawbridges on and off. That's what made it special. You moved for convenience? So you could golf cart to stores? To be closer to Folly Beach? 😂 Do you know any of Johns Island's great history? A Civil War Battle? Slave uprising , Revolutionary War history? Antebellum Plantations burned by Sherman's March? The farms and agriculture that occupied the majority of acreage as late as the 70's into the 80's? Folly Beach was a hippie and Hells Angels hangout. 😂 Now, Charleston for the second time in history is owned by Yankee Carpetbaggers. My family is still in the Chucktown area, I visit every few years. Sadly, It's a very different place now. 😢
He lives off Fort Johnson Road & there’s a beautiful 3 story antebellum home @ the end of FJR, so my guess is that he is familiar with James islands civil war history.

being from Johns island and going to James Island High, this guy is spot on

I have fallen in love w James Island. There is also a 24 hours pharmacy here, Walgreens on Follly Road.
I was just there the other night!
Another jewel you have is the dollar tree on Folly Rd & Ft Johnson. It’s huge & well stocked. It’s a $5+ store & has refrigerated frozen items.

We used to go to Beachwalker, but it got way too busy with such a small parking lot.
I hate all HOA's so that's a huge factor, we have motorhome visitors when they're doing the travels. Good points about both islands :)
Our old neighborhood, I gave the HOA a heads up my parents were visiting in their 25 ft RV for a few days to visit their grandchildren. A week later I got a violation notice in the mail.
@@TheBillOlson that’s just so insane. Here you are being respectful, it’s your own property annnd it’s not like it’s forever. 🙄🤦🏼♀️
@@jennablorezone8Band9A Right?! Oh well, now we live in an older established neighborhood with no HOA so we can do what we want.
Arent both islands on flood zones so very high home insurance?
Well, everything is in a flood zone. Just depends on your zone as to how high it can be and if it’s required.
@@TheBillOlson oh great no thank you summerville up for us non flood zoners
Actually, Summerville is in a flood zone as well. It’s just that most of it is in Zone X where flood insurance isn’t required.
11/6/22 Viewing; loved it!
Took you long enough to get here and watch! 😂😂
Now with all the building on Main Rd it's gonna get even worse on Johns Is.
I agree. For a lot of people that can work from home it’s not as big of a deal, but if the roads aren’t addressed it’s going to get bad…well, worse.
I grew up on main road played on it lived here for 47 years you would get run over today on main road
It's important to always prioritize safety while walking on or near busy roads.
Don't you know any really good mortgage brokers in the area ?
I do, and I used one of them.
No brainer for convenience
Yes sir! Last night we needed something from the grocery store so the kids and I took the golf cart. Can’t beat that!
What made you choose James Island vs Daniel Island or Mount Pleasant?

Living on the island for 47 years got to tell you I don’t care for change I remember when we got the first stoplight lol traffic is so bad
@@kipperlane5589 They better make Maybank hwy 4 lanes wide from River to Main with all they are building on Maybank!

Sounds like it’s more of a place for 50s 70s people
Why do you say that?
Probably the lamest “fun fact” ever. But we still love you !!
And I love y’all too!
Pls stop waving your hands around. It is so distracting.
I’ll try trying them behind my back for the next video just for you!
@@TheBillOlsonGood!!!
Just kidding! I’m going to wave them around like those flailing things outside of car dealerships!!!
Then I will not be watching.
You will be missed.
