If you’ve ever worn lipstick, lip gloss, or chapstick at some point in your life, then you know how difficult eating and drinking can be. Of course some of the application goes onto your food, but where does the rest go? That’s simple: into YOUR mouth. That’s right, you are EATING your lipstick every day. But, it can’t be that bad, right? WRONG. In fact, you may be ingesting more lipstick in your lifetime than you actually realize. So is it 6lbs? 9lbs? 20 lbs? Let’s find out…

i've already surpassed that amount. easily. i challenge matpat to a lipstick eating competition
I'd pay to see that. This is the future of influencer boxing.
Can’t wait for the video, lol
The battle will be legendary
I'm sure you will smear him into the ground in this competition
I would watch that any day of the week
Was showing my older sister the moment where he says “you shouldn’t be ingesting heavy metals on a regular basis” and her response was simply
“I’m low on iron anyway”
Lol
This is gold
but didnt mathew say aluminium n titatium

@@cqrter17 guess I'm being wooshed too cause i don't get it
Hey Mathew, there is a potential problem with your experiment. If any of the lipsticks had solvent in them that would cause your results to indicate more lipstick was consumed than actually was because the solvent evaporates and isn't weighed at the end of the day.
there's multiple problems with this experiment tbh
So you might actually be inhaling more lipstick than you ingest. I wonder if there's any effect on the lungs.
Technically, you might be correct but inhaling solvents in these quantities is almost certainly less problematic than ingesting the solid/paste fraction. Most of the solvent would just blow away and what little you did inhale would be no worse than catching a whiff of nail polish remover in all but the most extreme cases (in which cases I would question the safety of putting such a solvent on your lips).
Another one is that they didn’t control for the individual habits of the wearers by cycling through the lipstick types. Ah well, anything for the views.
plus like the amount lost in transfers to like a cup when drinking also wasn't accounted for
Damn we need a Safiya x Matpat Collab so bad!!
I know that saf and her husband have been on for a segment of one of the Saint Jude charity streams. I totally agree though, it would be so fun to see her on style or food theory
How much lipstick would it take to bury someone alive theory
Never thought I’d see mat pat wearing lipstick just to find out if you eat lipstick

the six to nine pounds of lipstick eaten in a lifetime is actually a myth, lipsticks georg, who lives in a sephora and eats 20000 lipsticks a day is an anomaly and should not have been counted
small correction - lipsticks georg is an outlier, not an anomaly

I was just thinking this exact joke, thanks for making it lmao

Nah MatPat. The real question is, as someone who has perpetually chapped lips and applies lip balm almost every hour, how much lip balm do you eat in a lifetime?!
Same, we’re DONE 😩
Probably about the same, maybe less
Tickle tickle
13:04 im proud of you matt
congrats on eating lipstick 👏🏻👏🏻
Rachel: I'm so excited to work with Team Theorist on this new partnership!
Rachel, 3 months later: What do you mean I have to help test how much lipstick we eat
Hopefully not
I bet it was like that though
Theory Idea: Do certain colors make a person look big, my friend always insists that brown makes her look bigger but everytime she wears brown she looks the same to me, but it would be cool to see if there is any colors that make you look bigger or if black makes a person looks slimmer ( my mom insists this is true, but I don't buy it).
Boosting this forsure 😅
Is black actually slimming? Great video idea!
Do horizontal stripes make you look bigger? Or do vertical? Growing up I was always told horizontal stripes make you look bigger and vertical stripes were slimming, but then as a teenager I saw a picture set that debunked it showing why vertical stripes made you look bigger. I'd love a break down of various colors and patterns to tell if there's any truth to these old addagesm And does the angle of the photo change it? Maybe horizontal stripes are great on a side profile but awful from the front.
Even more, as a redhead, I was always told that I can't wear Red. Is there any truth to that?
my mom always says that black and white makes u slimmer, which is kinda trippy tbh
My grandma once told me that black made me look way older than my age, when I went for baby blue she told me it's a color for adult women and makes me look old (im a teen) so like what do you want granmaaaa
Steph is so effortlessly gorgeous she literally hasn’t aged at all
Can we have a petition is that lipstick matpat have to be in every style Theory episode from now on
PLEASE
YES
Just a point for the experiment: it would have been nice to have a control. Put lipstick on then immediately remove and leave on the cotton pad for the day. That way you could rule out makeup loss through evaporation or other loss methods.
Yes. What came from solvent loss? What came from rubbing off skin cells during removal?
This needed some form of control and definitely needed to consider other variables.
@@thecountrychemist2561 this video is such super fun question to explore but pretty difficult to determine experimentally.
I agree
11:15 Accounting for Stephanie’s moisture, but you didn’t account for the liquid from the liquid lipstick evaporating. Same with Rachel’s lip gloss.
While I agree that this wasn't perfect, it was definitely better than watever the blogs were doing.
they should've applied the same amount they've applied on their lips on the scale and measured how much moisture was being lost
I have know clue what y’all talking about

i love how matpat and his team are doing more live experiments on this channel! its super fun and entertaining! :)
I love the fact that MatPat said "lipstick wearer" and not "woman", like the article said at 4:05. Anyone can eat lipstick, not just the ladies!
I’m so glad! I always feel left out when I eat lipstick even though I’m not a woman. Matpat is so inclusive!!
#matpatisasafespaceforalllipstickeaters
Same! I’m AFAB and don’t wear lipstick and I know lots of other women who don’t not to mention a lot of men who also wear it!
My little cousin used to consume his sister's entire lip balms, that representation is really important. Not all lipstick eaters are women
@@SamuelChvatali used to eat chapstick too XD
but only peach flavour. i had standards.
Matt's second application of the lipstick was a lot cleaner than the first. I'm impressed.
Whenever I was 5 my mom was out on a makeup trip and I had to come with her, she told me to look for lip stick for her and when I got to the section where the lipstick was, I decided to eat a part of one of the sticks and stick it back on the shelf. I found the color my mom wanted. The lip stick tasted like cotton candy and haven’t told anyone else about this since. I feel like it’s pretty important to mention I’m a boy.
cotton candy Mmm
I can only imagine that the next person to see that lipstick was thinking, "What the...?!"
At least you are still alive to tell the tale 😂
This is gold 💀🤌🏻
the thought of actually biting into lipstick is 🤢 how were you not sick ?
This reminded me of when I was younger and a friend told me if you ate your chapstick it'll taste just like the flavor of it (she had cherry chapstick). Turns out my Hershey's Chocolate Chapstick did not taste like chocolate after eating it...
I did this to when I was young.. I had the soda flavored chapsticks and honestly mine low key tasted like Dr Pepper but that might of been a placebo…
💀
@@kaixin3019no, that Dr Pepper one was legit. It definitely tasted like Dr. pepper
Man most of the ones I got were alwayyyys flavored. One of the reasons I got a lip chewing problem now 😅
When I was a kid in the 90's, lip gloss aimed at teens and tweens was sugar flavored. You can bet that stuff was licked off almost as fast as it was applied.

And also congrats on 11 years of marriage to both of you ❤❤
A variable I noticed in this experiment is the type of liquid lipstick used. You used the NYX Soft Matte Lipcream, which in my experience is like a hybrid of a traditional lipstick and liquid. It doesn’t dry down to a complete powder matte and it can transfer. Other liquid lipsticks can dry to almost like a dry shell, where it normally takes a makeup remover or oil to get the product off.
That is sarcasm there at 11:50
Theory idea! What is the best looking and most useful outfit for any apocalypse?
jacket with a bunch of pockets, cargo pants that have the straps that can be pulled up into shorts and nice thick leather boots , maybe even steel cap if you need to do some booting
off the top of my head
i know these aren't like "real" experiments but i think this one needed to account for the amount lost by transfer throughout the day - i bet that would explain a lot of the gloss weight!
Yes this is what I was looking for. Just because it's not on your lips doesn't mean it was eaten! Lipstick/gloss whatever comes off on every glass, straw, and piece of silverware that you put on your lips. With gloss especially it comes off so easily onto those things! To say you ate it all is just untrue.
And evaporation of lip gloss vs lipstick etc
12:44 when you said "i found five dollars. the best ending to any storie" i was reminded of a story about how this guy and his cousin had an inside joke were if they ever told a bad story at the end they would say "and then i found five dollars" his cousin passed away and after the funeral he reached into his pocket and found five dollars. this isnt really important i juts thought I would share becuase why not
3:37 cracked me up for no reason
These theories keep getting wilder and wilder, and I'm all for it 😂

These theories keep getting crazier everytime they post, and I think I love it 😂
Who's been secretly feeding me lipstick every night?
I love that Matt patt is doing this one in particular because HIS COLOR IS Perfect for HIM!! Omg firey passion is the tea
Matt, I know these videos are just for fun but the EWG is a terrible source of information. It is not science-based and has a lot of missinformstion and fearmongering in it. Most preservatives systems in cosmetics have been approved under a strict system with wide safety margins. They take into account user error aa well. You probably don't have to worry about "toxic" or harmful ingredients in your makeup or skincare, unless you're allergic or sensitive to something specific. This isn't the 1940s anymore.
Also, the ingredient list doesn't tell you everything about the safety or effectiveness of a product. It's like a food recipe but without instructions.
IM SO GLAD SOMEONE SAID THIS 🙌🏻
THANK YOU! Not MatPat referencing the EWG as a reliable source… 🤢
@@MaiKayxo I know :( I am so disappointed
Thanks for pointing this out!
I was looking for this comment, it is concerning how miss information gets uploaded without any consequences
Matpat always makes my day better when he posts a video :)
7:45 does the lips' "sizes" matter about the amount of moisture transferred? thin lips should not be equal to plump ones
Style theory idea: which is more attractive on clothing? Horizontal stripes or vertical stripes
Reminds me of safiya and her edible lipstick "confetti" cake. Yes, the "confetti" were lipstick chuncks
now we need just flavored lipstick.. cotton candy is on my mind.
Here is the full clip / ua-cam.com/video/50-KNweAbNY/v-deo.html
Yes
I’m goin with…Cherry flavor.
I know they had that in the early 2000's but it kinda fell out of fashion because kids kept eating it and it was marketed towards kids
Chocolate
8:49 he looks fine ngl
13:38 Rachel's lips are judging me
Do also note that during the tests some of that lipstick could have just been rubbed off accidentally throughout the day as well as eaten so that would change the outcome
🤓
Me watching this despite never having worn lip stick: “interesting”
What I really wanna know about this theroy is, "did matpat go on any public errands during the research for this video?"
0:34 that ONE theater video of matt is coming back to me, jonathans first bite 😭😭😭
Super cool video! Although, how did you account for the amount of lipstick lost on things like glasses throughout the day? Seems tricky to accurately estimate
I can't know what they did for certain, but they only wore it for a few hours (i think they said 5 for the second day) and they could have eaten and drank before and afterwards and tried to avoid anything touching their lips during the test.
I'm more concerned about the amount of weight lost to the liquid evaporating from the liquid lipstick.
I have in fact, never consumed lipstick willingly
Matching the red lip to red jacket is sooo satisfying to my soul
I've beaten the system by not even wearing lip gloss or lipstick
"Give a smooch to the subscribe button"
Loved it
Gotta send this one to Safiya and Tyler with their lipstick cake XD
For some reason, my little brother and I used to read ingredients lists for fun. Does anyone else do this?
ye
When I was a child I used to eat these really tasty lip glosses that came in these fruit-shaped plastic packaging...
I think I wasn't the only one bc afterward they changed the formula of the lipgloss to be flavorless because every kid was eating them like candies x,D so I bet there are like tons of lipstick in my system atm lmao.
I vaguely remember something like this
😩🤢
the sheer absurdity of the lengths these guys go to make these theories is what makes this awesome
Matthew, a request, I need a theory on Haircuts based on shape of the head, because I detest how I come out of the barber because I hate how I look with shorter hair, but it´s difficult to grow it out because it is wavy
I need to know if length of hair matters relative to face shape. I've heard conflicting opinions on that...
@@Just-Schizo Yeaaaah, that's my problem
Seeing MatPat wear lipstick just made my entire week, that's something i didn't think i'd ever see but i'm so happy i did-
Would this technically also count as a food theory episode?
I love how matpat takes one or two sentences and turns them into 16 minute videos
I never seen Matt so beautiful before!
0:53
As someone who owns lipstick, I actually use a mask friendly lipstick, where you would apply it, and within 10 minutes, it stays on your lips and never rubs against anything/ go on anything until you wash it off
Matpat just feels like an actual fun science teacher.
this is exactly why i hated the concept of lipstick and chapstick as a kid
(and yes, my lips WERE dry af)
Hearing that a shaving episode is coming is quite exciting. I hope you guys do a comparison between Shaving cream and shaving gel!
Omg yeah! I always breakout when I use shaving cream, and I don't think it's as effective
1:56
You're asking too much of me here man
I did not change my habits after learning makeup was filthy and disgusting
I am simply aware of it and now choose to consciously suffer.
I really love the way this channel has gone so far. I was afraid that even as a woman I wouldn't actually be that into it because I'm not big into makeup and fast fashion. But I really have found most of the videos to be interesting, if not personally relatable. I also love to see how Mat is tactfully involved. There's no her-der I'm a big man and can't even wear lipsticks for a video without having to "defend" my masculinity type BS. Just Mat explaining well researched thought experiments about consumer products and trends. Keep at it!
It's cute how matpat thought the average age for starting to wear lip stick was 16, try more like 6 or 7. Lots of parents get their little girls toy make up sets that often have real makeup in them.
Not to mention lip gloss is often seen as more innocent or less sexual, so it's the preferred type made for very young girls. Don't even get me started on how much glitter is in them and being ingested by 7 to 12 year olds.
And given the quality of kids makeup sometimes, I'd be more worried about what they'd be ingesting in that than professional makeup
And given the quality of kids makeup sometimes, I'd be more worried about what they'd be ingesting in that than professional makeup
Or lip gloss being a huge alternative for a lot of kids who aren't allowed to where makeup
9:08 you could've just used your smartphones camera btw...super easy lol
Mat's color lipstick was AWESOME.
I love that he opened the lipstick SO MUCH
Hey matpat I know you're busy and all but I was wondering if you could finish the finale for petscop
It's been a couple of years since you said you were going to do it so please can you finish it you don't have to rush we all can wait though.😊😊😊
3:05 the EWG is a bit of a wishy washy source. There's been a lot of backlash against them claiming certain ingredients are bad and other toxicology scientists have spoken out about how they are often overstating the harm of certain ingredients and they have made some questionable statements especially in regards to the use of pesticides or anything that is man-made even if the man made version of something is chemically identical to the natural version
This! 👆🏻
of course we are proud of you matpat ❤️💋 (get it the lipstick lol)
excited for the merch! i want a hoodie. i have been saving up to get some
I'd love to see a video where you do a theory on crocs saying you're wearing them wrong. I love your content, and thank you for the amazing videos.❤
Im also wondering how they accounted for just general moisture evaporation of the lip gloss? Could have been worth having a lip gloss on arm and measuring the difference as a control? I wonder how much of the lip gloss is just liquid
ironically, a couple of weeks ago i specifically tweeted “i wonder how much collective lipstick i’ve accidentally have eaten in my life”
I think it'd be really cool for them to do a theory on Rarity's fashion knowledge. Like how much does she actually know and does it relate to fashion trends in reality
Omg that would be such a cute/fun episode
I can hear it now, "She may be best friends with the embodiment of honesty, but her knowledge of the high class fashion world is all LIES!" Or something dramatic along those lines lol

Mat Pat wearing lipstick is the best thing I’ve ever seen
For older make up products like what my grandmother used i would not be surprised if it was 18-25 pounds. She reapplied large amounts of the lipstick that was the consistency of clay every hour on the hour and it came off on everything.

I love seeing Numberer1 in Team Theorists videos, so fun to see my favourite YTP creator working hard as an editor for my other favourite creators on youtube
It would be so interesting to look into the new trendish of lash growth serums and how they actually work, if they even won’t at all that is.
I may have an idea: How effective are those re-usable cotton rounds at removing makeup when just using water without any makeup remover (which is how most of them are advertised). Because I feel I always need to follow up with say a micellar water because it didn't take everything off 😅
This was really cool to learn about, but what about Chapstick? Would that fall under one of those categories, or would it be completely different because it’s meant to moisturize and soak into your skin?
Loved the little detail of having his cutout have lipstick at the start.
Please do an episode on the best way to clean glasses, cuz I'm sick of always having a streak/smudge left over no matter how much I wash then or what cloth I use
I used to buy “flavored” chapstick just to eat it. It actually tasted like the real thing and so I just kept eating it. 😅
Edit: I obviously don’t do this anymore. I was just a really weird kid and did very stupid things despite the fact that I was actually smarter and more mature than most kids my age growing up.
