    How do I check timing on a yamaha bigbear 350, 4x4. Is that the same procedure? TDC then make sure the cam gear mark is lined with the top mark?
    Thanks!

    I currently made a "novice " mistake while doing a timing chain replacement on my '88 yamaha moto 4 350. I forgot to do the first step of loosening the cam gear before the removal of the flywheel until I needed to go up top.
    well... my inexperience showed through and when I went to loosen the cam gear bolt the cam rotated and when I went to use a pry bar to hold the bottom in place it slipped and again the cam rotated... the same senerio when going to tighten happened... it rotated "clockwise " as well. So now I have goin on is the cam gear now has about a half of a rotation of "free play" meaning no resistance... it spins freely... do I need to take the cam out and reset it to TDC position and insert it back in the head ? I'm lost as to what is going on. This was all done by hand no motor running at all... in fact I still have it apart waiting to see what I need to do to correct the added problem that I've made for myself. Could you do a cam removal video at some point ... I'd also would like to see valve replacement and arms done... seems people skip those areas of interest. I wished I'd of used my head better on this project. .. I could be out ridin right now. But your help would be VERY welcome with my situation. Thanks and I enjoy your videos !

    So I pulled my timing cover off today. Noticed I’m way out of timing. Can I just pull the cam gear and the chain back in place so it will be in timing..?? Or do I have to do something with the valves!? I’m lost lol

    • @BeastlyWarrior228
      @BeastlyWarrior228  5 років тому

      Johnny Alexander yes you can just pull the gear and put it in time. However, it did it for a reason. Check to make sure your chain and guides are in good shape and check that your key isn’t sheared on the flywheel. Usually the problem is a sheared key.

    If you have the crank lind up with the T and cam gear mark lined up with that notch. How do you know its not a 180 deg out and not on the compression stroke

    • @BeastlyWarrior228
      @BeastlyWarrior228  10 років тому +3

      Good question, that's common to think that. However, the cam is what controls what is the compression stroke and what is the exhaust stroke. So you could pull the gear off and rotate the flywheel 360 degrees and it won't change anything. Reason why is the spark signal is picked up by the flywheel, so a spark is sent every 360 degrees of the crank anyway.

    I have trouble with my Kodiak 400 backfiring and doesn't start. did the carb, valves adjustment and all.
    eventually what I found is when I align the TDC line on the sprocket, the flywheel TDC T mark is not there at all. Huge mistake.
    so when I adjusted the valves counting on the flywheel T mark, I was so off that I had a valve gap 25 times larger than it should! crazy.
    Any ideas how to rectify and get the flywheel aligned as the sprocket? I did check the piston position while aligning the sprocket TDC line and indeed it was right at the top, also valves at the top so it is the flywheel that is off and I dont know how to fix it....

    I have a couple questions maybe you can help me with. I need to do this to my 85 Yamaha YTM 225 DXn three wheeler. it looks (from the Clymer manual) like what you're doing here is pretty much the same thing to set my timing. I was riding and she stalled and wouldn't start, I have since cleaned the carb about 6 times, put in new floats, Needle valve and seat and a new air / fuel screw. I put in a new spark plug and a brand new coil. I got a great spark, im getting gas and I got good compression, but it still wont start it "pops" once in awhile... though. Im thinking she jumped timing. so I took off the side plate and I took out the screw in the crank case... when I align up the "T" with the groove in the case, the timing mark on the cam gear is at 9 o'clock instead of 12 o' clock. When I put the cam gear mark to 12 o'clock, the "T" is nowhere to be found. So I need to re do the timing correct? If so, when I take the cam gear off, do I need to loosen or remove the auto chain tensioner? also, I can still buy a new chain and cam gear but I can find any part number or any info on the crank shaft gear. My cam gear looks good still, (to me anyhow) no badly worn teeth, no chips or broken teeth... can the chain be just worn or stretched? it looks good and is still nice and tight though. What about the Crank gear? do i need t replace it too? can I replace it? I cannot find it on any of the parts diagrams as a single piece.. it looks like its comes on the crank assembly which is listed as Obsolete? what do you think? Thanks!!

    • @BeastlyWarrior228
      @BeastlyWarrior228  8 років тому

      You'll always have to remove and reset the tensioner when taking the chain on and off. With the flywheel at t the gear should be at 12 o clock or 6 o clock. If it's at 9 then you have an issue and should check for bent valves as well.

    • @hdrjunkie
      @hdrjunkie 8 років тому

      +Goody's Atv cool thanks! I was looking through the repair manual and it doesn't even mention replacing the crank gear, is it changeable or is that where i have to buy the whole new shaft? I will also check the valves as well. Could this be why it just died though? I was riding, going very slow through a small muddy brook maybe 3 feet wide, no real water just black mud, i was going less than 5 mph and i was almost through it and the trike just shut down, no pop, backfire or sputter... Just shut down like i shut it off!

    • @BeastlyWarrior228
      @BeastlyWarrior228  8 років тому

      +hdrjunkie actually check to see if you have a sheared flywheel key.

    • @hdrjunkie
      @hdrjunkie 8 років тому

      i will check tomorrow... thanks! well when i got home from work today i took the side cover off and removed the auto chain tensioner, i popped off the cam gear which to me looked fine... i then turned the crank until the "T" was lined up with the timing mark, then i turned the cam until the key was pointing at 12 o'clock, reinstalled the gear with the timing mark pointing up at 12 o'clock also. i put everything back together and it still wont start...lol only now, everything feels tight and if i flip the decompression lever up or not, it makes no difference. so tomorrow i'll take it all apart again and see what happened. maybe something is not aligned right. when you align up all the timing marks, the piston should be either at the top of the compression stroke or the top of the exhaust stroke right? does it matter which one?

    • @BeastlyWarrior228
      @BeastlyWarrior228  8 років тому

      +hdrjunkie if you sheared a flywheel key the t won't be your true top dead center and it will throw your ignition timing off as well.

      Adjust the valves. The intake rocker may be to tight. Not allowing the intake valve to close all the way. This would lead to back fire through the carb.

      You have to richen/lessen the gasoline intake from mixture screw in carburetor. You are running too lean/rich (engine is getting too much air compared to gasoline or other way)
      Also clean your air filter and carburetor if mixture change did not help.

      Try getting a jet kit for your carb from Sigma or dynatech, maybe your jets are wrong size, they sell specific jet kit for your model, you can find those kits from Ebay. Also check if your floater is stuck in carb, hit lower carb body with hammer gently few times if you hear any movement and that does not help check the slider needle if there is broken bracket.
