So apparently the Ravens are real. Which is insane, but they are extremely intelligent birds. Tom Sturridge said they had 4 different Ravens of different sexes that were super obedient and just landed where they needed to and looked at him every time they needed to. I love Ravens. 🖤
This amazed me so much!
Lucifer knows that they were beat, because to deny hope is also to deny their own hope for Heaven.
Yup, plagued by her longing to go home. It makes Lucifer such a tragic character.
The only response I could think of is Despair, and to invoke one of the other Endless may go against the rules of the contest so Lucifer was stuck. But such a brilliant episode! I can’t wait to see the next reaction! It is indeed “a doozy”
@@joolzian2510 Right!
I guess they can invoke anything and embody it, but they cannot become someone else.
Or else Dream could have just said, “ I am God your Father, your Denier” and Lucifer would have lost instantly.
I also thought Despair would have been a good answer, too; but Despair also embodies hope, so it becomes cyclic because they’re both of the same concept. Hope against despair and vice versa.
@@JTLI90 There’s a fantastic video about the 7 dark gods of the dc universe by The Imaginary Axis. It talks about the Endless and how they are greater even than God because they exist by necessity. It’s more heady and philosophical than it is about the comic characters but wonderfully thought provoking.
It seems to echo Nada's last reply that she would hold onto hope that Dream would forgive her. Or maybe that was just coincidence...
I'm glad they kept that detail from the comics about how different people or beings, depending on their culture, automatically see the Endless as they expect them to look unless they don't know who they are, so Nada saw him as Kai'kul, her god of dreams, and also as a black man because being part of the first civilization to arise in Africa back in the dawn of humanity, she only knew black people.
It was a really nice touch! I hope we get that full backstory, but I feel like they may move it to another place in this adaptation.
@@NerdyNightly It's so important for the fluidity of the characters. I had no doubt Neil would make sure that stayed in, especially since it was so important to him personally. And they did it really well, I felt.
@@NerdyNightly It'd be great if we could get a series made entirely of the smaller, independent stories as a bonus once they're done with this
The actor that played kal'kul did well with the mannerism of dream too,
@@NerdyNightly I imagine we'll get it early next season since that relationship should play a rather significant part in what's to come...
I appreciate that Gwendolyn Christie's Lucifer looks very much like they could be related to Tilda Swinton's Gabriel.
Ooooo that would be an INCREDIBLE cameo
I was just watching Constatine after I watched this and had the same thought
At first i thought it was Tilda in the trailer which would have been awesome; Gwendolyn did a fantastic job though (:
@@jamesmccarthy962 gods I wonder if they talked to Tilda at all about being Lucy.
I'm loving Gwendoline
She did NOT fit the role. Swinton was perfect as Gabriel but Gwen, while huge, just seemed too goofy to play the uber powerful Lucifer Morningstar. They should've gotten the actor who did Desire to do Lucifer. They would've been a better fit. Could've just used simple perception tricks to make them look bigger.
An interesting message I got from the John Dee storyline -- we tend to bring out in people the things we see in them. John sees the bad in people, and (with supernatural help to be fair) brings out the worst in those he stumbles across. Rosemary sees the good in people, and she brought out the best in John.
he still fucked her over, maybe unintentionally, because that demon item will kill anything that harms her even a little. Imagine her dog nipping her or her children playfully slapping her and SPLAT. Also, bit of an easter egg, but the plant Rosemary was said to ward against demons.
I want a Gwendoline Christie, Tom Ellis, Peter Stormare round table talking about playing different iterations of the same character.
Ooooooo that would be INCREDIBLE
They can even make several actors play lucifer. Even in the comics he keeps changing appearance as he looks as he wishes to look (well, technically everything in creation looks as he wishes )
and that actor from supernatural as well
@@ayaehab Lucifer in Supernatural is just another version of the biblical character, while Gwendoline Christie, Tom Ellis and Peter Stormare have all played the exact same version of Lucifer from the comics. If this show gets a few seasons you will see Gwendoline Christie's Lucifer leave hell to open a Bar in LA.
oh that would be so good
I love the fact that Dream won the duel with the words Nada said to him from her cell
bruh I did not catch that, good noticing
Wow I didn't even notice that befor, nice
Also apparently nada means hope in bosnian-serbo-croatian. Whether that was intentional or not, an incredible detail
@@spaceapricot4855 I mean, Nada means "Nothing" in some romance languages, so idk
@@spaceapricot4855 Yep. I'm Bosnian, and when I saw her name mentioned I was like: "'A Hope in Hell'? Well, there she is!" Nada is also a real name here.
I love how they changed Dream’s reply to Lucifer, instead of it being a grand proclamation it’s just said to the Morning Star quietly and it cuts them to the bone. No one dreams of Heaven nor then Lucifer Morningstar and Morpheus knows that.
and denying that would make lucifer an hypocrite. I love this.
I love how Eternal beings fight different, its not just about physical blows its about intelligence and like a chessboard fight
Gwendolyn Christy's mastery of polite, regal menace is amazing.
The "transformation chase", as it is called (also wizard's duel or shapeshifting duel), is an interesting way to show a conflict without the usual superhero movie tropes with exchanging punches in a flashy way. It is also a battle of wits and creativity. Sure, you could immediately go for a trump card answer, but that wouldn't be true to their characters, or even the point of the game itself. It is to one-up each other with intelligence and creativity and ultimately defeat them, dominating them not physically, but also intelectually (and for the cosmic beings they are, this is probably a much better way to win a duel).
i just want to know what would happen if Dream would have said, i am the punishing hand of your father? would he have summoned a giant hand that represented the presence's power and bitch slapped lucifer
@@houseofaction He probably wouldn't be able to do so, because I'm pretty sure that there are angels which are considered "punishing handa of God" (maybe even Lucifer themselves), so same situation as Lucifer not saying that they are Despair. Protocols and rules would get in the way and claiming to be The Presence's agent would be problematic at least, as well as acting outside of Dream's function.
@@houseofaction or it could summon Michael or Gabriel or even The Spectre. Way too problematic and probably beyond Dream's power and jurisdiction
@@nemoisblue I wouldn’t say summoning The Spectre is beyond Dream’s power (definitely jurisdiction though), but in regards to summoning Michael, it’s definitely beyond his power, Michael and Lucifer are in the top 3 along with The Presence.
Probably my favourite part of this series so far! I want more stuff like this, I'm so tired of action scenes.
I was so worried for Rosemary. Im glad they changed the dynamic between her and John, and ultimately their parting of ways.
They really made dream look like he was straight out of a 2000’s emo band and I love it
Got chills while watching Dream and Lucifers scenes, and their dialogues.
I always loved the layers to Dream's last play in the game.
What kills Hope?
Despair.
But Despair is Dream's little sister, so Lucifer can't possibly make THAT play.
I think hope and despair tie more than one beating the other, so making that play is still a loss.
@@NerdyNightly also a good call.
Also, as the Endless define their opposites, Despair personifies Hope as well. So they are at best equal, which would be a tie and a loss for Lucifer. But also, yes, they probably can't invoke Despair as it is its own entity and of the Endless - they can't say "I am Despair" because it already is another being (probably some of the protocols and rules mentioned in the episode).
And Dream took Lucifer by surprise. Last thing the devil would thought in hell was "hope"
And even so, Despair can't really kill Hope as Lucifer themselves was 'hoping' for a win. It's kinda a checkmate there.
David Thewlis just absolutely smashing it out of the park as John Dee. It's hard to pick a favourite performance because everyone is amazing in the series but I think Thewlis might be my fave.
Thewlis is great at playing a likeable bad guy. See also: _Wonder Woman_
20:45 I actually recently went back to the comics, and in that version, it’s mentioned that “failure of nerve, hesitation, being unable to shift into a defensive shape, (and) *lack of imagination*” are ways by which one may lose “The Oldest Game”. If the shows version has the same rules, I imagine opening with anti-life would fall under “lack of imagination”.
Also, worth noting that, like you said, Chrononzon is Dream’s opponent in the comic, and Chrononzon is an idiot. It’s fairly clear from the start in the comic, that Chrononzon is in way over his head, and Dream absolutely has the game won from the start. It’s like a high school chess club kid going up against Gary Kasparov; when Chrononzon becomes Anthrax (the “Butcher Bacterium”) in the comics, Dream basically just goes like “Ah. Okay, he’s pulling that old gambit. I see how he’s playing this now, rookie mistake.”
This episode sells the series for me! Finished it yesterday, 100% this gets a s2.
Gwendolyn needs her Lucifer spinoff. Neil said in an interview that they changed the duel because they wanted her to have more screen time and I super approve.
I saw Mazikeen and I literally bounced and squeed. Like...she's good in Sandman but I fell in love with her in Lucifer. So good, so amazingly good.
In the comic, John Dee has the amulet but it lost it's power when Dream takes the helmet back. That's why Ethel dies. But yes, I really enjoy this adaptation of John Dee in this. He's sympathetic...in a way.
"He just hurt her as much as Jaime Lannister did" I legit gasped and went "what a bitch" lol
Same, I as like "How dare you bring that up" lmao
agreed on the Matthew interruption. it's one of the few weak spots i had with this adaptation, whereas i also agree that most of the changes have been brilliant or i can see why they're necessary. this just feels like an arbitrary "we have to give Matthew something to do to prove why Dream needs him around...so here's a little pep talk at a key moment!". it deflates the tension they'd worked to build up, both by changing the duel to being with Lucifer (and oh, Dream's face when he realizes he's walked into that trap is so delicious!) and having them reflect the physical damage of each attack so that the stakes are more immediate and apparent. and honestly it's not even all that great a pep talk, lol! i thought it would have been a much stronger choice to have him recall what Nada said to him as he was walking away, that she wouldn't give up hope (a line i don't recall from their exchange in the comic, so they even teed themselves up!). then you also get the dichotomy of her being the key to his victory while his pettiness and pride still won't allow him to forgive her, which would serve to heighten certain events to come. alas! i still loved the series as a whole and this episode in particular is among my favorites, and also been loving these reactions and commentaries! so thank you for making them! :)
Aww, I love Matthew and his pep talk.
@@KCohere33 I love Matthew as a character. I love how Patton's playing him. The pep talk in that moment just didn't work for me, alas!
@Brad1980 I mean...he obviously could have if they wrote it differently. The way I described above, for instance. Or the original comic where Matthew hadn't even been introduced yet and Dream won without a pep talk from anyone. Or any other number of ways that would have felt stronger or less out of place. Glad it worked for you, though! 😎
@Brad1980 I took at as the pep talk didn't save him neccissarily but the human perspective and their imagination concerning hope is what trumps eternal darkness.
I honestly thought Mathew ruined the moment. The actor was doing a good job interpretating that scene without words and Mathew came in and just spelt it out for everyone rather than let the audience go through the motion. It made it even worse by the fact he chose to swore.
You guys keep bringing me back to my childhood. I was reading Wheel of Time and Sandman in high school and it's so cool to see them all again. This show is way better than the WoT adaptation, but gives me hope for the future. Apparently good adaptations are possible.
To be fair, it looks like this had 50% more budget than WoT. I'm getting the feeling that a budget just doesn't stretch as far as it used to, and I guess $10 mil per episode isn't close to what's needed for "prestige" TV anymore.
@@bjbilyk The problems with the WoT adaptation weren't really budget-related though, they were storytelling-related - the adaptation part was the issue there and having more to spend wouldn't have fixed that.
The reason why this adaptation is so good is because Neil Gaiman is heavily involved with the creative direction of the show. Rafe for Wheel of Time doesn't qualify as someone who respects the author's source material unfortunately
@@markissleepy I feel like something might have been deleted or edited. I think I was responding directly to a "budget" comment. Yes, the writing has completely missed the mark, but a bigger budget and 2 more episodes would be nice to see if the writing can be elevated as well. If the writing stays the same, might as well not waste any more money on it.
@@markissleepy Yup WoT destroyed the CORE of the book, the dichotomy of Saidin/Saidar. That doomed the story from the start. It is impossible to make a good adaptation when the first thing you do it to kill the CORE concept of the source.
I had the same reaction on the scene with Nada. Seeing her knowing the rest of that story is so much harder than watching and just wondering who she is.
if someone started with antilife I'd just say something like "I am a blooming universe, the spark of life in nothingness, the start of a world." Basically the big bang, right?
Too bad Dream started with the Universe play. You can't go back to your previous play in The Oldest-Game.
So there's the interesting thing. By using Anti-Life (a creation of the Great Darkness), it allowed Dream to use a creation of the Presence: Hope.
Yeah John Dee in the comic is just designed to make your skin crawl, but I really like this sympathetic version
You mentioned "this is how you adapt something," and I could not agree more. This is a master class in how to adapt a comic. This is my favorite comic of all time, and Gaiman is my favorite living author, so I had high expectations for this to say the least. So you can imagine my surprise when it blew me away.
I love "That's now how it happened in comic" zooms on Nerdy's face (as a fan of comicbook myself always crack's me up). I also love a fresh perspective on the show with a sprinkle of almost dry humour from Clarus. Totally my vibe. Yeah I also sometimes don't know If they did a better job in a comic book or in the series. You're a great duo. Subbed and waiting for more, keep up the great work! Greetings from Poland!
Thank you and hello from Canada! 😊
Much appreciated - from one of matthew's animator
NO WAY. You CRUSHED it!
They did such a fantastic job adapting this to the screen. I was kind of surprised to see who Dream actually battled, but when they made that casting announcement, I had a feeling they were going to use Lucifer even more than in the Comcis. I can't wait to see how the second half plays out. And John Dee is such a more compelling character here than in the comics. I think they've changed just enough to keep comic book readers interested, but also make it so people coming in just off of name recognition or the trailer aren't completely lost.
Is it bad that I felt way more tension watching the lady give a guy a ride somewhere than the trip to hell? I mean the trip to hell was interesting, but that car ride was so relatably scary. Also, would have loved to see *one* American who was like "you don't want me to shoot you? Okay, fine," and then puts the gun away.
I love how John Dee is more human and less monstrous it’s great you noticed the show takes lines sometimes word for word from the comic
I'm wondering if Clarus gets why Lucifer refuses to invoke the opposite of hope in the battle. You know being one of his siblings and all 🖖😎👍
It's more than that. Despair wouldn't beat hope, it would only equal it. Despair can make you lose hope, but then you just hope for death instead. Also the Oldest Game can be lost by lack of imagination. And on top of that, Lucifer can't counter hope because they are the most hopeful being in Hell. You can see how much it cuts them when Morpheus mentions dreaming of heaven.
Beyond excited for your reaction to the next 2 episodes. Episode 6 in particular is one of the best episodes of any tv series I've ever watched. I legitimately cried when it ended.
From the moment the "battle/game" started, all I had going thru my head was the Wizard Duel from Disney's Sword & the Stone between Merlin & Mims 😂
I'm both loving how great your reactions and insights are and loving how gorgeous you two are together. Can't wait to see you wrap up this show!
Dream + Lucifer = maximum DRAMA!
The outfits alone!
I just stumbled upon you guys but that man’s reactions tells me HE KNOWS SOMETHING. I can’t wait to find out more! Subscribed! Hahaha
Gaiman has expressed that John sparing Rosemary was a deliberate change, in order to let people who _had_ read the comics know that this would play out differently than they had seen in the books. The 'casting' changes were an early hint to that, but the sparing of Rosemary and the passing on of the amulet to her was the nail in the coffin of "this isn't going to be precisely the way you expect it to be, readers." I'm glad they spared her, I liked that touch. Anyway, I'll catch up with you guys on Episode 6! *cannot bring myself to watch 5*
Loving your vibe reacting to this show, I think I'll stick around and see what else you got.
Gwendoline's voice is such a luxury. I could listen to her read a grocery list.
i like the headcanon i saw somewhere that the loss in this episode cause lucifier to have, y'know, a bit of a moment, where she changed her form to tom ellis, when topside, and opened up a nightclub and that's how the shows can connect.
One of my favorite aspects of The Endless is that what see isn't a static reality. Many cultures a god of death, dreams, war, etc. but they are all a bit the same so the fact that the Endless are everything to everyone and personified differently is awesome. Extra points to Gaiman and the production team for making every version of Dream an absolute babe. God damn!
Y'all are the only ones doing this right. Or at least, you're the best reactors for this.
DO NOT watch the "Lucifer" TV show. Read the comic collection of Lucifer instead, or at least first. It's Sandman-level quality.
Imagine someone pitching the entire Sandman story to a TV executive, and then that executive says, "yeah, but what if we forget all that and just have this Morpheus guy or whatever help a cop solve crimes instead?" It'd be the Sandman showing up on crime scenes helping to explain what happened to some rando every week... instead of what we're getting here.
Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened to Lucifer in his TV show. TV executives did exactly that to it, and it's a shame because Lucifer's spinoff comic was every bit as good and rich and as high-concept as Sandman itself. "Yeah... but what if he helped a cop solve crimes?"
-----
"Hell is other people" - Jean-Paul Sartre, "No Exit." Neil Gaiman took that very literally.
I hear you, the comic is way better, but Tom Ellis' performance is worth watching at least a couple episodes of it. He's a brilliant Lucifer
For me it will Always be Mark Pellegrino who is the best Lucifer. ☺ When it comes to Tv shows and movies.
I always describe the Lucifer TV show as someone taking Homer's Iliad and turning it into Seinfeld/Friends. Oh well, I've given up on adaptations at this point. A good book is enough for me.
@@NerdyNightly Exactly! Tom and the whole cast were amazing and to be honest after season 3 when Netflix picked up the show it was miles better.
@@NerdyNightly Mazikeen from Lucifer show is great as well though her character is not developed as good as she deserved
Nerdy, you hit on a really good point about the Lucifer v. Dream sequence. He DOES know/understand more than Lucifer does. The Endless are explicitly a higher order of being than gods and their adversaries, as depicted in this universe. Gods and Devils are created and sustained by the beliefs of the inhabitants of the Waking World. The Endless are aspects of absolute, universal concepts that exist independently of any being that is subject to them. The gods and devils have a habit of seeing the Endless as just other members of their pantheons (cf. the blurred lines between Apollo/Dream as the father of Orpheus), and that comes to bite Lucifer in the rear end here.
So enjoyed watching your commentary and genuine, emotional reactions to the series - but I have to take a moment and superficially say that, as a fellow redhead, I am needing a makeup tutorial for this look!! FLAWLESS application girl - those cheekbones and highlighter, what?! - and further driving my envy for brown eyes!
So here's a fun fact about Matthew. The character is actually Matthew Cable, husband of Abby Cable, who had a fantastic arc in Alan Moore's Swamp Thing before he died and his spirit became Dream's new Raven.
I really like your end of episode discussions. Most reaction channels just end at the end of the video.
I've watched the entire season twice so far. Possibly my favorite adaptation ever. I was a huge fan of GN. This is a lot like LOTR since the changes they have made have improved the narrative and story for this medium. More even as the season progresses. There are a lot of changes to Dolls House and I agree with all of them.
What's "GN"?
@@Spielkalb-von-Sparta I think he meant NG. Neil Gaiman
@@OhWaker Thanks!
@@Spielkalb-von-Sparta Graphic Novel
@@OhWaker No... GN is graphic novel.
Watching your reaction - when he gave her the amulet, cause you know what happened to her in the comic.
I think Lucifer should have gone with entropy (the heat death of the universe) instead of anti-life.
Anti-life is very much a DC-comics concept, with Darkseids search for the anti-life equation. Entropy also pretty much explains why life is not a viable counter, since entropy is the end of all life and movement.
But Gwendolyn Christie was absolutly perfect in her role.
I think Lucifer only follows his nature in this figth. All his choices were about destruction and death.
I agree, I was actually surprised that they stuck to anti-life
I didn't put this together initially, but people keep referencing the Anti-Life Equation. The funny thing about that is the Anti-Life Equation was created by the Great Darkness to basically end everything. And the one thing that beat the Great Darkness in the beginning? The Presence, who created Hope. Not sure if that was intentional, but it's a very appropriate coincidence if not
I think Anti Life is maybe a reference to the Anti Life equation as a nod to the connection of the DC Universe indirectly where hope makes a lot of sense (as in the comics the counter to the equation is "freedom" in the language of the New Gods just a guess) . As far why they changed John Dee they probably wanted to avoid legal issues and stuff between DC characters and Netflix, as John Dee in the comics was Doctor Destiny.
Nerdy, your reactions through this are just awesome.
There's a (famous, though modern/old) version of the King Arthur story (The Once and Future King? - and later taken by Disney in, The Sword and the Stone) where Merlin and a witch have a shapeshifting battle and she turns into a dragon (and what trumps this?) but Merlin (so not 'historically' accurately, germ theory being a millennium away) turns into a bacterium. Anyway, famous wizard duel.
That battle was spectacular!
I prefer to be the Dungeon Master and not a player in D&D, and as the DM I can say, I am not afraid of players throwing Fireball, I know I can TPK whenever I would like. But I prefer having memorable stories blossom through the game, thus I don't focus on the challenges or combat aspects, but I am more interested in creating dilemma and have emotional investment.
I hear you. Always roleplay before rules
"What could kill hope?"
A lot....a lot of things.
Despair. Loss. Doubt. Fear. Etc
Life
11:22 well now the opponent is your dice that always lands on 1
I’m a comment, algorithm feeding and easy to miss.
The Algorithm gods never miss! Thank you for contributing!
She's probably 6'6" or 6'7" with heels... TOWERING over the other actors.
Also... telling the devil that you will remove dreams of hope... of heaven... As if Lucifer wasn't cast out of heaven because of rebellion, telling the devil she dreams and hopes of heaven... yea, INSTA-humiliation, eternal enemy.
I am a Sandman novice and was torn between reading the comics before watching the show and just jumping into the show. I decided to just jump in. :) You are the second person I have seen that did not like Mathew interrupting the fight. I definitely see the point you are making, but I saw it as Dream is still regaining his strength after being imprisoned for more than a century AND he does not have his helm or ruby....Forgetting how powerful he really is. Mathew was just reminding him. Love you both BTW!
The more I learn about Nada the more I am absolutely sure that most anyone in Nada's shoes would defy Dream.
I love that the fact John Dee admits he is a murderer lol
In the comic, the asylum was Arkham, which is why it was in the middle of a city: Gotham.
I was happy to see the nod to Etrigan, even though he wasn't there. Also happy to see Mazekeen, having also read the Lucifer comics.
13:00 I said the exact thing when I first watched the show 😂😂😂
As someone who hasn't read the comics I don't know how important his raven is to Dream, but I think they put a big focus on Jessamy trying to save him and him being unable to do anything about her death. So when Matthew says Dream would never leave his raven in hell, that has a lot of weight since this time he can actually do something about it. It also shows that despite his powers, he needs help from others, especially such a small creature. It makes him more relatable opposed to him being overly powerful. It's not easy for him to beat Lucifer and he sort of "cheats" them rather than winning with power alone. That makes it "realistic" to me.
I think the bacterium thing is a nod to "The Sword in the Stone". In both the book and the Disney adaptation, Merlin defeats Madame Mim in a shapeshifting duel by becoming a bacterium (in the book, several in quick succession).
This is THE BEST series I have seen in a very very very long time. So intelligent and thought-provoking. This series and especially episode 4 needs to win an Emmy or there is something very very wrong with the world.
The battle between Lucifer and the Sandman has to be THE BEST combat scene I have ever seen in a TV series or movie. I fully expected both of them to start firing lasers at one another; however, what actually happened was SO MUCH BETTER and SO MUCH MORE EPIC.
I have watched numerous NETFLIX series. This is definitely THE BEST OF THE BEST. WOW!!! I honestly cannot adequately do this series justice with words alone. More please.
The second I heard Mathew I screamed “AGENT KENIGGGGG”
Wow, you both have been a blast to watch -- thoughtful, irreverent, and "mildly adorable" -- *almost* as fun as this series! For me, the entire ensemble cast is this episode's "MVP". But *if I had to pick a favorite* , seeing that wince of agony break through Lucifer's pride as the memory and dream of Heaven flash across her face was just incredible to see.
21:00 The analysis of the game of metamorphosis is super interesting
Patton didn't even audition for the role, he was asked to do it by Neil Gaiman, himself. It makes sense as he and Patton are friend.
I personally felt so mucch more tension from the "B plot" with John Dee than I did in the storyline in hell. Part of that came from being a reader first, I knew how it ended in the comics. Also David Thewis was *terrifying* in this role. I didn't think he was the right person to play Ares in Wonder Woman, but he is 100% chilling in this role.
I found the choices interesting. First Lucifer chooses a wolf, he is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Then he chooses a serpent, obvious. Next, he choose bacteria, his temptation of Adam and Eve allows for disease to enter the world. Then, a nova, hellfire. Then anti life where he mentions the beast of judgment, which he is.
very cool analysis!
I wonder if/when they do _Season of Mists_ and Lucifer hands the keys to Hell to Dream and leaves, whether they will transform into Tom Ellis since that series sort of continues from that point for them.
Did they cast that amazing actress in this specific role just so we can giggle at her saying direwolf?
Claroos, you do wonders for that bustierre. It looks wonderful on you!
Not only that.
Was I the only one who wanted him to drop the ultimate trump card on Ms. Morningstar in the battle? Being “I AM JEHOVAH, THE ALMIGHTY GOD OF HEAVEN AND EARTH, THE CREATOR OF HELL, THE WORLD AND THE UNIVERSE, THAT WHICH CREATED ALL. INCLUDING YOU. AND NOW, I UNMAKE YOU”. And the composition of satan would unravel and disintegrate. Then he could take hell for himself. 😂🤣I really thought he was gonna say God, the original OG to beat the Satan in a battle, and at least try to win it all in one fell swoop. 🤷🏼♀️but alas, live to fight another day. 😂
If you enjoyed this game between Dream and Lucifer, you'll enjoy the game of Materialization Shiritori in No Game No Life between Jibril and Sora~
I figured that it is also important for all of the forms one takes in the oldest game to relate to the character and who they are. Lucifer becomes a dire wolf and a snake and a disease and a fiery nova and anti-life. Dream is a mounted hunter, a hawk, a world, a galaxy and hope. Kinda like Merlin's quirky and clever shapes vs Madam Mim's aggressive and cheating in the sword in the stone. In a shapeshifter showdown, you get to see more about the characters and who they are. So you're limited by yourself. Also, you don't want to start off with anti-life because you're revealing too much of yourself to start rather than ad the killing blow.
Something that might've given the challenge more sense of an audience is if they had brought in Azazel and Beelzebub. IIRC, there's a passing narration ballon in the issue about how the ruling structure in Hell had changed since Dream was last there. My understanding now (because I didn't follow DC otherwise when I was reading it during the original run) is that Lucifer getting co-rulers in Hell was part of a major continuity change (Crisis I?), so Gaiman had to adhere to that. For the show, it makes sense to pull away from that where possible.
Lucifer out here throwing shade every time s/he speaks
Ya, the mental chess game between Lucifer and Dream went very meta. I was thinking the same thing -- once they got to "Life" "Anti-Life" -- can they use them again? Were they playing Magic: the Gathering? Also does "Hope" exist if there is no life? It's very similar to if-a-tree-falls-in-the-woods question.
This is where the show really picks up in my opinion. I have my gripes about this episode (although I'm a bit biased due to having read Mike Carey's Lucifer run), but it was still enjoyable. And the next two episodes (especially 6) are my favorite in the entire season.
sandmans lucifer is still a bit on a playful mood, but in mike carreys run he turned to darker lucifer he is known for because amenadiel visited his club and tried to ruin his vacation in sandman presents: lucifer after that he really was hell bent on distancing himself from his father
@@yabadodo8566 I agree. I think the differences are a bit more complicated though. Gaiman's Lucifer still played the role of a monarch, so he was more authoritarian and regal. As for him being darker, I actually think Gaiman's version was more sadistic (considering how he treated Cain), while Carey's version was more aloof, utilitarian, detached and cold.
I would have sucked at this game. I'd escalate way to quickly; "I am a direwolf...." "I am Tiamat - god of dragons". :D
"I am Grog with a natural 20..."

This was a great episode. The next two are my favorites. Then comes a gigantic drop in quality. I feel like the voice of Patton Oswald does not fit well, you can clearly hear him as the actor instead of the character. In the audiobook version Andy Serkins did a MUCH better job.
"he just hurt her as much as Jamie Lannister did"
lmao
I love your t-shirt! Narg smart!
Thank you! It's our merch from our Book Club!
Loving this adaptation!
"what power would hell have if its prisoners weren't able to dream of paradise?"
Matthew the Raven: "Can you even see in that thing?"
Dream of the Endless: "I can."
Me: "Is that a Star Wars reference?"
Ep 4 and 5 were very made and clingy. It make u concentrate and pay attention so u can’t miss anything. The Dialogue in this Series are amazing
It's btw allegedly not an animated raven... there were 3 'raven actors'!
Seeing Nada, pain, sadness.
Tears.
Knowing the pain he put her through, and still leaving her there.
(I know what happens but I'm trying to not spoil for others)
Although I can see why they'd want to give Gwendoline Christie more to do, Lucifer being Morpheus' opponent is about the only change to the comic that I haven't liked. Lucifer always seems so above it all while they were the monarch of hell, it almost feels like they're lowering themselves by being in the challenge. Still, just a minor gripe.
And when it comes to using Life to counter Anti-life, in the comic it states that one of the ways to lose the game is lack of imagination - so 'Life' would be too unimaginative to counter 'Anti-life', and you couldn't just say 'Despair' to counter 'Hope'.
despair would be his sibling and would probably be against the rules.
I'm so glad John didn't kill Rosemary in this version.
You should show her the panel of Martian Manhunter meeting Dream
ok. The game they played a 4d rock, paper, scissors. As one can lead into another. They played this also the sword in the stone when the witch challenged merlin
That's why Anakin don't like sand lol
