Stephen Fry as "Gilbert" was picture perfect casting. Its as though the pages from the comic became alive.
He is a bit less on the portly side here, but I can put that aside since he portrays Gilbert so well otherwise. For that matter, G.K. Chesterton probably wouldn’t have minded being slimmed down some.
To be fair even the original comics were heavy on the "queer" side of things. It was one of the first things that I remember reading having openly and addressed gay, androgynous/agengder/non-binary (Lucifer), trans and gender fluid characters and treated them like actual people and not all encompassing stereotypes or that that was the only facet of their characters that were focused on... It was just a part of the larger being of the persons/beings/anthropomorphic entity.
Yeah, Gaiman was always leaning towards Chatacters that weren't easily defined by things like gender and sexuality. And I think he wanted to explore the problems homosexual young people in particular face a lot. Many of the openly queer Characters were discriminated against a lot more, because the comics where written in the 1990s, where acceptance was still a lot lower.
I very distinctly remember that in 24 hours, the Waitress didnt want to set up Judy because she thought DOnna wasn't good enough for her, she thought she shouldn't lead such a sinful life and in her book she ended up with a nice guy that cured her of her lesbianism. It is never presented as the right and good thing, but as a fact of life for many gay people at the time. I'm glad they changed that up a bit, reflecting the more accpeting ways of 2022.
As someone from Germany who doesn't care about the "American Culture War" in the slightest, I had absolutely no problem with how diverse and queer this show is (and I say this as a straight white man in his 30s). Did I notice it ? Sure, but it didn't bother me because the story and especially the characters were so fascinating and well written. It only bothers me when there's token representation or a preachy message that I'm constantly bashed over the head with - because stories with those elements are usually very poorly written and uninteresting.
@@Nr4747 token representation also tends to be like very bad and stereotypical, so even as a young queer woman, I completely agree with you.
I love it. I don’t know much about trans and LGBT culture, but I have adored this portrayal of it. I LOVE Desire.
this is why its my favorite comic.
Stephen Fry was an absolutely _perfect_ casting for Gilbert.
Always had a smile when he was onscreen
He delivers just a warm and comforting aura whenever he appears on screen.
I thought for sure that Stephen Fry had been in the radio drama adaptation, but I'm not seeing him on any other listing than the live-action.
I’m not generally a massive fan of reaction channels but I love you guys cause you offer both the perspective of someone who’s read the comics and experiencing a beloved familiar story, and someone totally new to the story who gets to experience it for the first time.
I don't know if you've ever seen Jeeves and Wooster (starring him and Hugh Laurie), but he's very much channelling his portrayal of Jeeves.
To be honest, I was a bit confused at first about the fact that the usual whiners didn't seem to have made much of a fuss (or as much as I'd expected based on how they usually act) about this show and the white characters being played by black actors or by the gender-swapped characters, but then I remembered that The Sandman came out in the late 80's and it already included a lot of gay people and stuff like that, so the whiny comics fanboys who complain about this kind of crap I guess have never made up much of its fanbase anyway. Hilariously, the only complaint I've seen is from some guy who basically said, "I've never read the comics, but the fact that some characters like Death are played by a black actress is woke B.S. and takes me out of the story." Dude, you don't know the story. Otherwise, you'd know that Death being "black" isn't relevant at all and, in-story, conceivably people are seeing her as whatever applies to them in any case.
There's a lot of said "criticism" on twitter, it's hilarious XD
Also, if people haven’t met any Black goths, may I suggest they broaden their social circles.
Y’know, or don’t. I wouldn’t want any of my friends to have to deal with them!
If they wanted a comic-accurate Death, she'd have to be covered in chalk-white paint.
@@Rmlohner even then, it still wouldn't be accurate to your character. Since death is a shapeshifter, they all are. She can appear in any form to anyone completely differently.
@@chrisleneil Black Goths are awesome!
The COMIC was 'woke' (stupid expression) for its time. It was amazing and quite gay and the screen adaptation is, so far, wonderful. And I say that as a grumpy, old, straight guy.
I think woke is a stupid expression as well. I mean being woke is basically just being a kind and non judgmental person.
To me only "wokeness" problem that this show had, its the fact that on my country dropped on a thursday at 4am so i woke up to watch a couple of episodes leaving me tired and irritable the next day.
Now jokes asides you are 100% right
also the irony of calling a show essentially about dreams "woke"
Casting an enby person as the gender fluid Desire is amazing. Modernizing the language around Desire is one of the greatest things about the updates.
But yeah, Sandman was always queer af, now they just aren't hiding it at all (if they even were, but some things had to be more subtle for comic censors).
some things are more explicit, like alex Burgesse's relationship to his "long time personal assistant" and the update of desire's pronouns to the current etiquette... but very little of it seems different from the comic. I think a live action show allows for more mannerisms and queer codes to shine through better than a comic.
@@maximeteppe7627 it certainly does allow for more, but again...comic codes were a lot more serious back then (and still are to some extent). It wasn't as obvious in issue 1 that Alex and Paul were together (though there was a lot of talk around that subject) but it was VERY evident in Kindly Ones. But yes, Desire's updated pronouns, considering how clunky the she/he brother-sister stuff was in the comic, is a breath of fresh air.
I haven't seen any NEWLY queer shifts, everything is as it was in the comic other than Bette who was a homophobe and the CEO's husband (but they shifted those characters a LOT), it's just a lot more evident throughout.
@@jamesfoster9613 I'm pretty sure that vertigo and sandman in particular weren't comic code approved. it was a label for kid friendly comics, which sandman definitely isn't.
But for sure, publishers would have been a lot more shy about allowing queer representation back in 89.
It's true that the show is more explicit about it all, but it's pretty amazing how "straight" in the continuity of the comic a lot of it is.
You know it's almost always a disappointment going online to engage in the fandom for certain things, seeing the conversations people are having. I see a lot of folks talk about how the latter half of the show was so boring they fast forwarded through a lot of parts.
But seeing your reaction and rewatching this episode where the second half really begins makes me realize I'm just of a certain age where things hit different. A sister being separated from her brother due to family circumstances then fighting to get him back, a woman still very much dealing with the grief of her lost husband so young in life, a woman who pretty much slept through all of her teenage and adult years skipping strait from childhood to elderly.. man I can really feel those situations.
Without that emotional context if you were to see that as just drama for drama sake sure, it's totally boring. I know the show isn't for everyone but it's good to see a reaction where we just get the material and what is trying to be done and appreciate it for that it is.
Just personally, it's the execution that's not great about the second half. I absolutely love doll's house, but they change rose in a pretty significant way personality wise. And it doesnt help that I dont think the actress is particularly amazing in the role. Lyta's grief also doesn't carry well in this version. Cinematography also takes a dip compared to earlier eps.
My issue is basically that Rose's acting and the boy are so subpar compared to the amazing acting other's do, that it felt like watching a Dr. Who companion episode whereas I'm here for the Doctor.
Just look at their view counts for episodes 1-6 compared to episodes 7-10.
Looks like average was around 25k for 1-6 vs 18, 12, 11 for 7-9 and 10 hasn’t been released yet as of this writing. You might say the older episodes were viewed more since they had more time but I feel it’s definitely tied into the popularity and that’s tied in with the quality. People aren’t just not connecting with the story, they definitely can tell when the quality drops off. And it nosedives imo. Yes i definitely wasn’t ready for the numerous “woke” elements but the story itself also craters - everyone so strangely is “kid glove friendly” with rose and with the the other lady with the husband in her dreams. At one point Rose beats up two bad guys with nothing but a bottle and they are twice her size even when they have a knife and are charging at her. That’s unrealistic. There’s just very little stakes, Dream is a secondary character all of a sudden, and the whole show revolves around cliched tropes. I’m sorry if this is difficult for those who loved this arc to hear but it’s the truth. For example, Arcane was a great “woke” show that was incredible and similarly episodes 1-6 were certainly “woke” but were executed brilliantly. So even in the same show you have brilliant writing and execution.. I honestly felt sad for how poorly the quality drops.
I am glad at least you’re able to appreciate why others didn’t like it though. It’s very rare for people to understand critics.
@@elck3 to be fair, dream becomes a secondary character in at least half the comic.
literally though, the reviews. so fucking funny. the homophobes are so deterred. as they should. they don't deserve quality content. a literal masterpiece.
The best part is that all this stuff is straight (so to speak) from the original comic back in the '90s, before anything "woke" was supposedly happening.
@@Rmlohner
Yep, pretty much straight from the original, except for the race/sex swapping.
Do you think its the older demographic that is homophobic?
Sandman has a huge Fandom of Gen x (50's) so I would think the older generation. Younger conservatives (i feel) will generally dislike the entire industry so its not Sandman specific. I'm curios what everyone else thinks.
@@roserose45 i think it’s just people who don’t know the source material. so more the average person. i don’t think it’s limited to the older demographic.
@@roserose45 Pretty much just young to middle-aged angry conservatives with no familiarity of The Sandman looking for something to get angry about, because that's just what they like doing for some reason.
I always laugh at people who throw "woke" around as a negative epithet. Like, you do realize that's not insulting to me, right? 🤣😂🤣😂
It's doubly ironic when these same people will say "all the sheeple will WAKE UP one day" without realizing the irony.
@@malifex9922 I point that out all the time. Even things such as "social justice warrior". So someone who's a warrior for social justice... is bad? lol
To be fair, the same can be said of the word “alt-right” - it’s not insulting to people from the extreme right as far as I can surmise. The left and right both use these terms as _dog whistles_ for their own respective crowds. They’re each desperately trying to cancel each other’s existence. I wonder when the world actually can come to a mutual understanding and I suspect it’s when common words are used somehow.
@@Saphthings Neil Gaiman himself said any time you hear about "political correctness gone mad," substitute "treating people with respect gone mad" and see if it still makes sense.
@@Saphthings Damn it, you wrote the example I came here to write. :D
This show was so much gayer than I expected going in, and I’ve loved every minute of it!
I just watched Queen’s Gambit a few weeks ago & was absolutely blown away. One of my favorite shows of the last 10 years.
Fun fact! The Corinthian is actually a strictly homosexual man in the comics, as per the words of Gaiman himself. In the comics, The Corinthian’s favorite victims are men since he is made to be a dark reflection of them. He both loves and despises man.
In the show, he is bi/pan, again as stated by Neil Gaiman himself.
Also, The Corinthian is a kind of term used to refer to gay men back then (though I could be wrong, since I struggled to find any sources on this outside of Tv Tropes).
Great reaction!
I don't think the antiwoke brigade realise that the characters in this episode are pretty much represented exactly as they were in the comic. Sandman had gay, straight, bi, trans and everything else people in it back in the 80s and that is why it was so.loved.
I am in fact one of those who believe there's such a thing as forced inclusion and too much needless pandering. That said, this show has none of that. For starters, the comic was pretty "woke" for its time and furthermore, the show never made being gay, bi, trans or enby the point of any of its characters...
Btw, I'm a latino, gay, 34yo man if that even matters
Its been absolutely perplexing to me, the people that began complaining right away when we were getting pre-production announcements, saying the "woke casting" was "ruining" it. I was like...naaaw, clearly NONE of y'all have actually ever read the graphic novel then lol
@@b00jen81 A geeky youtuber in my country (Brazil) said when the show was announced that it would be a total flop, I'm so glad he was wrong, and that I can laugh about it.
@@l.c893 quem foi o idiota?
I still love that the cast played what Sandma character are you. Jenna got Johanna and Tom got Dream.
Everyone was cast perfectly.
You guys honestly bring the excitement and information that other reactors do not give and it is so fun/satisfying to watch your videos! Honestly, I appreciate your *appreciation* for things that others usually don't pick up on. Thanks for the great content!!
Thank you so much that is incredibly kind!
What beautiful parts of Florida are you talking about?? Maybe the view in the rear view mirror?? LOL ;)
It's understandable not to have any idea where it's going from here, this last one was the end of the "Preludes & Nocturnes" collected issues arc and this is the beginning of "The Doll's House," so it's a brand-new arc. This ends up being a "set-up" episode, where they have to lay a lot of groundwork for it.
Yeah, not many shows shift their purpose mid season, but I think they did it really well here
very well said.
@@NerdyNightly
There are 10 collected volumes in the Sandman comic. Basically they'd do an "arc" of about 7-8 individual comic issues, and then start another one. Just in order to keep track of what the hell they were doing.
Season 1 of the show is the first 2 volumes. So if they got greenlit for everything, the most they could put out is 5 seasons, consisting of 2 volumes each.
As someone who recentrly figured out they are trans, this show really helped me! I loved how unapologetically gay it was. so many shows will have one quick peck on the lips between two characters of the same gender and try to claim they are being brave. this show isn't marketed on how 'gay' it is to get queer communities to watch it, it just is what it is and shows real people and relationships.
I loved it when I first read it, back in 1989.
Queer characters just exist. No need to explain why we're there. No need to be straight passing or good role models or gender-confirming or positive or negative. We're just there. The son of a Magus who can't figure out how to let go of the tiger's tail. The entity too fabulous for only one gender. The cool and sexy nightmare. The drag queen landlord. The goths who love spiders. The wounded psychic detective who brings disaster to everyone he knows. The successful playwrite.
We don't have to be in the background for a single scene - though some of the characters were. We have our own stories.
Later on, the comic even adds another fantastic trans character. And while some aspects of how she's portrayed haven't exactly aged well, I'm pretty confident the show will correct that.
@@Rmlohner The horrible TERF character will hit differently.
@@Rmlohner From what I've heard the audio book already corrected some of that story, so a full overhaul of it isn't too unlikely in the show
Exactly! Just let it be natural. It's when they stop the story to point it out, like the show runners want a pat on the head for including such content, that some start complaining about it. And then they are called phobic, when that isn't what they are at all.
"As someone who is in that camp" ... Well played wordplay there. ;)
There are a lot of us queer’s in Florida you’d be very surprised.
Yep - people don’t realize just how very queer our state is: It isn’t a purple state, it is red with several extremely blue parts!
We tend to congregate in those blue bits, but I know a lot of rural queers here, as well.
The real truth is we're everywhere, even where you'd least expect us
As a non-American, i always wonder why is "woke" a bad word or bad thing. It's okay to be a little woke, it shows that you are not ignorant and making an effort to understand others. That being said, the use of "they" for non-binary persons can be a bit confusing for people if English is not their first language because of singular vs plural. So context definitely matters.
Originally, yea thats what it meant, but i think its been weaponized on us just to divide us more
I think woke is sort of considered bad because its been associated with people who insist on inclusivity and acceptance of all backgrounds and walks of life and they defend these things to the death by speaking for the people they believe theyre protecting without ever actually consulting them and taking their actual opinions into account. They do this for validation of their moral superiority. Its also associated with the practice of corporations hiring for diversity and making a big show of acceptance just to look good. Basically, woke symbolizes the people who make a big show out of being inclusive and accepting just for the reputation it gives them.
Yeah... In Portuguese we don't have gender neutral pronouns or articles. Even objects have genders, like chairs are female and couches are male for whatever reason. So when talking about Desire in Portuguese, I refer to them as male.
I’m so happy I found you guys, it’s so rare to have a nice fun energetic reaction channel w ppl I can relate to. And totally agree, this show has some major queer energy and I LOVE IT. One of the main writer is Allan Heinberg, a really good gay writer, and of course we are getting some nice and fun representation.
Have to say you two are my fave reactors on YT, im a huge Sandman fan and loving your insight into it but also just your fun, open-mindedness. never change. Love from new Zealand
Actually I didn't saw the Sandman as forced on genders and races
I haven't read the comics but for me it make sense that some of these immortal beings or long age beings may be bis, gays so on so forth for how long they lived
And unpopular opinion i like the last arc of season 1 of the Sandman it is not boring it just mellow down to strengthen the plot
When I first heard the show was filming, I checked the reported cast. When I saw that Stephen Fry had been cast for Gilbert, I was over the moon. I have read more of G. K. Chesterton's works than almost anyone else I've ever met, and the character of Gilbert (Chesterton's first name) was modeled after the man. The dynamic is utter perfection, as Mr. Fry's portrayal is almost the exact idiosyncratic person I could have asked for. Chesterton himself was quite the character; fat, distractable, a twinkle in his eye, ready (I read once) to write a book on the slightest provocation about anything at all at breakneck speed and with multiple errors.
After Death, Gilbert (or as he's better known in this series, ******** *****) is my favorite person.
Floridian and yeah, we know. And agree.
Also, as a fellow Queer, it is funny hearing all the ‘woke’ complaints.
It doesn’t feel weird or forced because, especially being in the arts *waves vaguely*, we are everywhere. My friends are all over the map when it comes to demographics whether it be age/race/gender/sexuality. It’s just… knowing people from different backgrounds?
Poor Jed, his situation utterly breaks my heart.
I know a woman who (with her husband) fosters one child at a time, along with having two of her own.
The money they get for fostering doesn’t pay enough to do anything for enrichment in the children’s lives; for them it is a labour of love.
Yeah, they can feed, clothe, & get them into a summer camp, but to actually get them into things in which they show interest: specifically into clubs or groups for specialty subjects, taking them to shows, funding day trips out to museums, being able to take the time to do those things? Yeah… that money doesn’t go far. (Anyone talking about defunding library programs is in for a fight from us!)
Since they aren’t independently wealthy, they have to work. Luckily they manage to both have enough flexibility in their schedules to give the time to those kids. They are in their late thirties, and have taken in over 10 foster kids over the years!
That level of commitment blows my mind.
I have another friend who grew up a fosterage, & she never saw a family like that. It was all: basic needs, do what we tell you, and get out at 18 with absolutely nothing. She raised herself.
The foster system truly brings out the best and worst in people.
But back to the reactions!
Stephen Fry’s height always does come as a shock whenever you see him standing next to someone. He is so refined that you forget he is a man-mountain!
Agree that the least believable bit was anyone getting to see a performer of John Cameron Mitchell’s level of talent, & there not be bodies pressed wall to wall! The look reminds me of retro-drag days with the upscale lounge where white, upper middle-class straight couples went out to see performers that had been featured on ‘The Mike Douglas Show’. Just love the atomic feel: very specific. But also somewhat stifling.
God, sweet Unity! They soften what happened to her as much as they can, but yeah. Rape. She was raped. That poor woman lost everything, including her bodily autonomy.
Wonderful reactions, as always! I’m waiting for those ‘moments’ so I can see your faces when realizations hit, and it is worth it every time!
Can’t wait for tomorrow!
I’m so glad you guys are reviewing this with such open minds and hearts 🖤
One of my favorite things about Sandman is that you never know when some tiny detail you probably didn't give a second thought will come back in a huge way. How many people actually predicted during the first volume that Unity would have a central role like this in the second? This also naturally means there's a HUGE replay value.
I’ve watched this show several times and loved finding new parts every time. One thing I recently noticed on Desire’s wall is that there is no representation for Destruction! On the left is the book for Destiny, the ankh for Death, the mask for Dream, the blank space is for the Prodigal (Desire points to the spot while talking to Despair), the mirror for Dream, the box with the hook for Despair, and the colorful moving cloud for Delirium! So either the Prodigal is Destruction or Neil Gaiman is changing the character for next season maybe?
One regret I have about the show is that we didn't get to see more of Stephen Fry as Gilbert, as that was a perfect bit of casting!
Also, he never said "Hoom".
also the original source material was itself pretty "woke" (for the 90s at least) so I don't know why some viewers (especially those that have read the comics) are up in arms with it
I think its because more of the characters aren't straight and its more explicit about it now. Like in the book you never saw john constantine, or the corinthian engage in explciit sexual activity. It was all implied. Also in the 24 hr diner episode there were more gay or rather sexually fluid people than in the comic. It was judy and marsh that were gay in the comic and not any of the others. I think end of day the idiots are gonna be idiots whatever their motivation is. I think it really works in this show and isnt forced or just there for no purpose.
The comics were "woke". But they couldn't be as overt in the late 80's/early 90's. Many things could only be hinted at. Gaiman pushed it as far as he could for the time. I think its a matter of he can do things now that he couldn't back then.
@@jkhristian9603 i agree but i think because so much of it was implication in the book that allowed a good chunk of the readers with a conservative mindset to pretend that those things didnt exist in the book.
@@justarandomveryintelligent8934 That's interesting. I never thought of it that way. But this was the Reagan/Bush era after all.
Been loving your reactions to this fantastic series. Also how am I bi but just now finding out my favorite reactors are both bi too? So happy I’m subscribed.
Also it’s not like added a bunch of “woke” stuff. All the LGBT characters in the show were there in the comic when it was published thirty years ago. (And even if that wasn’t the case, who cares, just thought it was worth pointing out).
Right wing naysayers can stay mad lol.
It isn't about whether they changed the comic, for those channels they know they can farm views and therefore money just by creating the outrage and therefore convincing the people who buy into that it is real. They don't care what the comic was or wasn't cause it's all a grift
@@NerdyNightly Definitely, they are a bunch of hacks and outrage merchants.
Out of all the reaction faces you two have given for this show, 11:40 really hits home. Just a stunned and surprised silence.
That dry "Florida" at the end just killed me...🤣🤣🤣🤣
I was wondering how they were going to portray Despair…. That’s one where pulling the punches a little was the smarter choice
As a huge fan of GK Chesterton, I absolutely adore Stephen Fry's character "Gilbert", dressed the way he is, behaving the way he does, asking Rose if she's read any Chesterton. Clearly Neil Gaiman is a huge Chesterton fan as well.
I’m a big fan of Fritz Leiber, who championed Chesterton quite a bit, so I got a big smile when he asked that.
That hair colour probably wouldn't take that long and could have really simple upkeep - you can combine a variety of fibres into existing locs, some of which can hold colour much better than real hair
And a fun coincidence; Mason Alexander Park (Desire) has played a great Hedwig, there's some of their performances on youtube
Learning you’re both bi makes so much sense in my French Vanilla fantasy. 😗✨
The people who complain about the show being "too woke" should maybe (re)read the comics. The two major changes the show makes is in casting, both people of color and gender swapping in important roles, and making the Corinthian overtly sexual. The Corinthian always (to me) had a subtext of envy (or desire?), and what he gets out of eyes is a metaphor for his desire for real experiences.
As for the lack of a big crowd at Hal's/Dolly's show, I will chalk that up partly to Covid protocols. There are only crowd sequences in the first episode, with the Order and then the party. At the cabaret, we see all the people from the house grouped together, with maybe a table or two in the background. There's also a good story reason for the shows to be not at all full, but I'll wait to comment on that in the next episode's reaction.
About John Cameron Mitchell, he's not the only Hedwig in the show
Mason Alexander Park (Desire) also played the character on stage
"Florida" 😂😂
The actor who plays Corinthian described his character as the patron saint of serial killers lol
Hes not wrong. He did inspire the collectors
The change in introduction of Lyta Hall is... fascinating. I like it for the most part as the comics had her superhero origin and is hard to explain, but I wasn't expecting it at all like this. But I appreciate her and Rose being friends from the start, it adds weight to what comes later.
The actor playing Unity’s lawyer plays Suane’s father in WoT. He is so good in WoT. 🥰
Yo that is so cool!
That's where I know him from!

Just subbed! you should really watch Hannibal, Lucifer, Sherlock, or The Witcher if you haven’t already
I need to rewatch this episode. I was so destracted by how amazing both Desire and Despair are that I forgot to listen to the actual words. lol Also, can we talk about how perfect the idea of Desire and Dispair being twins is?
Yey! More people happy to see JCM in this!
You kind of know you’re in the Sandman when you go “Is she just telling this rando person all sorts of personal details?“ “No, no - that’s her dead husband.” “Oh - well that makes sense, then.” WTF?
Yes! Please do Good Omens! Both book and series were great! And a second season is coming soon!
Oh my God I did not realize they were both bi. Love it!
it's funny that you say it doesn't make sense to limit your attraction to one gender if you're an immortal being, because The Corinthian's actually gay...at least in the comics. that's why his victims are all young men. people keep thinking Netflix made Sandman super queer, but no...that's how the comics always were
I love the diverse casting of the sandman but couldn't they have done something with the overweight white lady? She could have been any other character but they decided to make despair overweight and dirty looking. That's not very inclusive of overweight people is it?
Just to be clear I'm saying that I totally agree with all the changes to the characters however to make despair overweight and dirty is cliche and enforces negative stereotypes. I am insulted by this as an overweight man with an overweight wife and overweight family members. We are not dirty stinky or depressed. I would have been perfectly fine with despair being a skinny white guy or any other race gender but the fact that they kept that character overweight was was just unnecessary. Furthermore I would have been totally fine if desire was an overweight woman or if death wasn't overweight woman overweight people are beautiful so I just want to make that clear in this argument.
It is funny how no one objects to the Florida jokes... because everyone knows they are basically accurate.
End credits art of the next episode is going to freak some people out. 😁
having only read snippets and cliff notes from the comics, when i first saw the gilbert character in this episode i jumped out of my seat as i thought it was the presence aka the creator/god, based on the similar outfit and dastardly dashing moustache
If I was Morpheus, with that twink pale body and immaculate jawline, I would be bi too. I'd be more active than Desire.
I'm from Florida and not mad at you 🤣🤣
Will be back tomorrow!
I mean, the comic was really gay. There's a whole arc dedicated to a trans person being deadnamed. What happens is lgbt are always afraid of being attacked, so they create bubbles of friends and people near them, for safety. So if you find one the people around them are more likely to be like them too.
You also have to realize that dream, or hope, is the biggest on those most down. Dreaming is what brings a person out of despair, and into desire. So the comic or show focused Dream on the people who are most at risk or danger. So it had a lot of chapters dealing with minorities, lower class, and those who are dreaming of a better life.
The white straight christian guy who has a good job and happy family doesn't spend a lot of time "dreaming", they are past desire and into delirium already. They have a goal and get it.
But this comic and show isn't about those high up in delirium, those with desire, despair or even destruction. It's about the people who dream.
Girl.... you are so lucky to have a very hyper and funny GAY husband!!! 😘😘😘
I'm bi but ok
@@NerdyNightly But don't cheat to her!!! I know, you are attracted to guys also.... don't hurt her feelings!!! She's a nice woman and pretty too. 😂😂😂
Unity was oddly cast in my opinion. The actress does a fine job, don't get me wrong, but Morpheus was imprisoned for over 100 years and Unity was 12 when he was first captured. At the very least, I feel like they should've made her up to look older, rather than trying to pass off a woman in her mid-60s as being nearly 120 years old.
No sun and practically no facial movement for 100 years, no wrinkles.
Plus, possibly, supernatural fallout from her whole situation.
in the comics he was captured from 1916 to 1998 i believe. so she is supposed to be in her 90s in the comics. they updated it to modern times. so it makes things confusing. such as John Dee not being older looking despite being born in the 1920s
@@houseofaction Dee had the ruby, and spent a good chunk of his life around Dream's other tools, like his mother. 🤷♂
@@mbpoblet Lack of sun or facial movement certainly wouldn't keep a 120 year old looking 65, I would hardly consider that an explanation.
And maybe supernatural fallout but more than likely it was just an oversight as it's never even addressed in passing. Not that it needs to be, it's not really that important.
Do consider there's a touch of magic about Unity and there were events that put her in more magical situations that could account for her looking 65 still
Desire was originally based on the late Patrick Nagel's art prints from the 70s and 80s, which also inspired the short-lived and missed animated series Moonbeam City.
Yeah, it’s obvious why people on the right might not like this show and feel like it’s super “woke” but let’s not forget that this story came out back at the end of the 80’s and was almost just as diverse as the show is and that was decades before the “woke culture” that the right hates so much. It almost seems like diversity is just a normal part of art and culture and the world we live in… huh… and one more thing… Florida….uh….! Lol 😂 I love plenty about Florida but they make it so easy to dunk on them!
DESPAIR HAD CROCS, WHICH IS A MASTER MOVE. i literally applauded to the screen.
also the casting for desire, FUCKING HELL. the david bowie of it all. they really did hit the jack pot with the whole casting for the series.
except with rose, i dont know why, but every time she speaks, it sounds like a young bad actor "acting," surrounded by a gold standard cast. (also patton oswalt wasnt easy to swallow at first, it was like throwing the greasiest cheese burger at what is a 5 stars restaurant meal assembly) has his moments at times, but yeah, there are british actors with humor in their voices that could have taken the role. patton's voice was like a desperate american trying to take part in an english popular piece.
just a personal opinion. no need to agree or disagree.
19:07 That's what she said
Great reaction video!
Thanks so much!
The funny thing is though is that none of the gayness is really added lol. It's all from the comics, just not as forced into subtlety.
The people bitching because it's woke quite obviously didn't read the book. It was woke when it came out in 1989.
Please do a reaction series to Good Omens! Especially with Season 2 just now out. I don't know if the strike is affecting you all or how, but it would be a fun reaction to see whenever you could!
idk man. straight white male, most people consider me "alt right", one of my favorite shows on netflix. Been a real treat.
the serial killers meeting a "Mike's Drinks n' Burgers." Mike Dringenberg, one of the original artists on the comic.
*A Game of you*
Love your reactions to Sandman. You should get some new bedframes, though.
So glad I found you two! Watching your reaction to the sandman has been a delight. I hope you watch Good Omens and Hannibal.
To be fair I don't think you can misgender desire, if I remember correctly in the comics desire is referred to as he, she, and they at any given time
...Florida.
I burst out laughing when i saw Stephen fry. Like what the hell is he doing in this 😂
One of the joys of having a genuine and full understanding of the original source material has been rebutting statements by the kind of nimrods who babble about wokeness....because so much of the original comics was ahead of its time in the 80s and early 90s...and fascinatingly...almost no one batted an eye about LGBTQ characters or characters that weren't white or were female and central to plot for something other than attractiveness or lewd poses. In short...we weren't racist incel snowflakes primed to whine about everything we encountered. Hell...look up The Invisibles from Vertigo comics in the same era...and look up Lord Fanny. (PS: The Invisibles was something very influential to the then young Wachowski sisters...King Mob and Jack were a precursor to Morpheus and Neo in the Matrix.) Since I was gay and closeted back then, I noticed everything...even the subtle bits...like Paul Burgess and his 'long time companion' in the first comic...because it was still unusual to see positive or at least neutral representation. Sandman earned it accolades as literature that transcended its medium...pushing what could be expected from a comic book. How strange and sad that now the most minute and normal details are considered shocking or pandering or calculated...when they are intended to be a more honest and realistic snapshot of human existence, with all the variety and wonder that such entails.
(PPS: a few years after I came out, I found a job working door, cleaning, waiting tables and bar backing for a drag club here in MI...old fashioned numbers like those still got performed. I do still love a classic drag performance. No offense to the newer performers...but sometimes only those old showtunes seem like they satisfy.)
Just a heads up I'm from Florida it's not as bad as the media makes it look
Girl, your boyfriend is going to a bad place
The expression at 6:08 onward was all of us i think.
In the comic, Lyta is the daughter of Wonder Woman. Having her played by someone that actually looks like Gal Gadot is a nod to the original story.
bi4bi 🎉 💖💜💙 love you both
"He seems a little too queer for Florida." As someone from Florida, I can tell you... you're very wrong 😂 Try visiting Wilton Manors for a fun time, and definitely stop by the New York Grilled Cheese Company while you're there for some of the best greasy food I've ever eaten!
Florida creates community bubbles, so there's the latino areas, gay areas, and etc. The part that feels heavily conservative is that for a long long time the ones with voting power where the older white retirees. But that's changing now from since Obama's time younger people and minorities are voting more and more. It's changing fast, which is why so many there are pushing back with making things "great again". Great for them lol
AS a NY'er? I'd take FL over NY or CA. Nothing like a homeless person chasing you down for money, yelling at you with a long rebar pipe
Though im a stickler for cast to be close as posible to there comic book the casting and show is great. Desire is both and neither gender its literally what you want. Im gay Latino proud have African heritage in my mix but im a stickler for authenticity to the source material and i don’t like gender bending and race swapping Gwendolyn and Kirbby while they did fantastic jobs with the characters can’t say I wish to had seen comic accurate looking actors like Matt Ryan he will alway be the perfect Constantine casting in all sense not for bigotry just for being a stickler. Still love the show and all the performances.
I understand people being weirded out about ""how woke"" this show is, in the sense that even I had a moment when I went "wait is EVERYBODY gay here? What's happening? lol"
What I don't get is why they're mad about it. Yeah everyone is gay, so what? This doesn't make any difference to the story. If this was a show about relationships (like Gossip Girl or something like that), than I agree that we would need to be more realistic when it comes to characters' ethnicities and sexualities. But for a fantasy world, I think having everyone as bissexual is a great touch! I even go as far as to say it made the narrative more interesting, since I could never guess if two characters were gonna have a relationship or not. For example, Dream and Hob. If this was a typical 2007 show, I would never consider that they could like each other romantically, but in this I had no idea if this was the way they were going with it or not. Same happened with the people at the diner.
Lol He said "SEE!!"
Florida. *LMAO* Every time someone or something pops up in the series that I had forgotten it's such a pleasant surprise and seeing Nerdy have that and Claroos put on her wonder and thinking face is a delight.
Great reaction video 😁👍
Thank you 😁
When the tenants in the bread and breakfast were introduced to Rose, I actually thought that they weren't real and that she was dreaming. Ken and Barbie, like seriously?
*sobs in Floridian* We could assign you a guard gator to keep you safe! Jeffery is friendly and only bites a little.
Just discovered you all with your Sandman videos. LOVING THEM! So much fun to watch you both and hear your thoughts and see your reactions. And is it wrong that I love how much Nerdy cried. Awwwww.
Florida has a Great Drag scene in Tampa Orlando and Ft Lauderdat / Miami !!
I don’t think I ever saw them have a serious face they always laughing and smiling 😂😂 even at heartbreaking moments lol
