Located on the north of Bruny Island, Killora Bay is an off grid cabin surrounded by untouched bushland and wild grass trees. The vibrant forest landscape embraces the home, allowing the residents to connect with nature and live privately in the delicate environment. The site, with its natural clearing, came with certain restrictions that included a predetermined building zone, which informed the scale of the off grid cabin’s structure.
The restrictions poised a challenge that ended up being integral to the design of the off grid cabin. The architecture needed to be flexible - the home’s small floorplan meant that each building element needed to work hard to achieve a comfortable and versatile space. This included having fold-out beds to work as part of the joinery, allowing rooms to be used for different functions when needed.
The internal spaces were designed with high ceilings and glass windows to bring light and movement into the interior design. Remaining connected with nature, the external greenery frames the interior rooms, with sunlight casting ever-changing shadows indoors. As an off grid cabin, the sliding doors allow the home to embrace the exterior as its own.
The material palette of the home is simple, giving the opportunity for the landscape to speak first. As an off grid cabin, it was important that the materials met bushfire regulations, but also worked in harmony with the surrounding forest landscape. The dark-stained timber cladding contrasts against the white concrete poured within the interior - the concrete has a raw finish and continues to bring the landscape’s earthy palette inward.

the bathroom is amazing. Having a shower under the stars.. incredible
Yes I agree!
Till you see a skin walker looking back at you 😕
The Shack, you have to love that, it suggests that there is not a sense of preciousness here and yet, everything was treated as if it was/is. The modesty of the scale relative to the majesty of the land is so respectful and inspiring. There is no mistake that this is a very special home. Restrained, refined and still cozy. Remarkable.
Thank you for your eloquence in expressing my thoughts.
The timber exterior really blends into the surrounds. Fantastic house.
yeah.. timber and trees tend to blend in 🤗
What I love about the house is it doesn't overpower its environment. It' just...there, humbly blending in and not serving as a distraction. It's just a house... a resting place in a quiet environment.
An exceptionally complimentary use of wood and concrete (which was beautifully poured.)
The video has not yet started but comments flow, thats how nice the house looks from the still image.
I like the idea of Fold up Beds. It's a very good idea being able to use rooms for more than one purpose.
Between Never too small and this channel I’m spoilt for choice of amazing architects when I have the opportunity to build.
Thanks again for taking us on your rides! I rode a BMW for 8 years and traded it in prior to our first of two kids. 5 more years and they’ll be out of high school and it will be time again to get back in the saddle. Your videos bring me back so closely to the memories and reasons why I got a bike. I’ll enjoy these next 5 years without a bike, and hopefully more of your trips, but I’ll be looking forward to riding once again.
THIS is absolutely gorgeous. One of my favorite homes yet.
I'm curious about the off grid features of the cabin, which aren't really described in the film - how is electricity generated, where does the water come from, what happens to waste water, how is hot water heated?
It's a cabin... in a preserved area. Maybe they have RV/camper van type of equipement ?
I don't think it really is off-grid. There are no solar panels etc. Probably clickbait
@@gamm8939 It's misleading, maybe someone don't know what off grid actually means. As in, getting out of the city/suburb is off grid, which many mistakenly believe. Anyways, great little cabin, but looks pricey! All that glass must've cost a fortune.
Mad props to the videographer. Beautiful shots. And the clip where the fire reflection in the glass was perfectly overlayed with the unlit fireplace outside 👏👏
That white concrete is *chef's kiss*
I love tiny houses but this extra space and comfort would be the dream to live in. Gorgeous!
10/10 Must be unbelievably relaxing in there. Stunning. And beautifully shot.
This is ridiculously gorgeous. There are so many elements & themes from this house that I so love.
It seems I'll be back watching this video plenty of times. What a great job she made! Every window of the house seems like a different picture of a peaceful paradise. So beautiful! Big windows, frameless or with the biggest glass possible... just like I'd wanted. Again, such a good taste!
This is gorgeous. The dark wood and white concrete kitchen is dreamy
I like that the tall trees seems to ‘hug’ the shack. It’s definitely a great home to be in to have a respite from the city life.
Until a fire sweeps through and burns the wooden cladding.
Mind bogglingly beautiful-both the “shack” and the building site. I especially love the finish on the white concrete. It gives such a softness and warmth to what could otherwise be a hard, cold surface.
I hear Gillian Anderson when watching this video. It's very soothing to hear about the house and remind me of some of GA work for shows where she is serious like The Fall.
Looks simple yet very detailed and complex . Looks like it was very well planned out . Love it . I would feel like a child going into the trees and nature to play . sense of peace and comfort . The materials used , the colors , the location , the lighting love it .
fantastic house. not too big, healthy, natural home, practical, blends into the environment. especially valuable. one of the best in the world.
There are subtitles to help you understand what the video is about.
This channel is very popular among architecture students in Japan.
Thanks for the informative video.
3:51 WOAH THAT WAS ON THE BEAT
The classiest middle finger to socializing.🔥
i didnt see how the main door could block rain water flow into the house. Thanks for the video. I really love the work of art 👍
Second time in a row I am hearing
The favourite part of the house is *what is outside of it*
This house is eerie to me. Freaks me out. I would prefer a 4 room log cabin /w attic to this.
Amazing design and execution . Great place for living in peace and tranquillity .
Stunning simplicity interweaving with nature. Amazing project!
I really appreciate the cinematography
I like especially the white concrete kitchen island bench- it contrasts very well against the large amount of timber inside and out. Seeing the structure’s footprint from above, I had assumed it was rectangular in form. It sits in it’s landscape lightly.
To the production team: Music is important but should never overpower the narrator/speaker.
It feels like this is something they will never learn 😅
Idk who heard this and thought… “yes, it’s perfect”.
Inspired from Chris Nolan 😄
True.
true. too many high frequencies take away the clarity of the voice
These are my favourite types of houses .. compact and nature oriented and away from everyone
Fantastic home. My favorite feature is the huge skylight over the shower -- like showering outdoors without any of the downsides.
you're one of the best channels i've ever found on youtube, many thanks for the inspiration you've been creating!
Camera movements & editing is top notch
This looks like an absolute dream - when can i move in?
Killora BAE 😍😍😍
Ridiculously gorgeous!
Most awesome "Shack" I've ever seen!
Very excited to see this one - can't wait!!
Lovely design - strange though to love the untouched outdoors and yet build such a decadent "shack"....
Love the road and flora. Home sits well in its environment.
I designed a house very similar to this floor plan. In some of the shots, like this one 4:36 it is identical. Big sliding windows, open kitchen to dining, to living. Amazing. Even the bedroom window and dimensions are practically the same and located in the exact place.
I love the exterior and the shower sky light!
The methodology, activities to build this dwelling is impressive.
Love it!
Especially because you can be inside the house but still feel like you are half outside and living in the nature :D
So true!
@@TheLocalProject what is the square footage of the house?
Stunning in every single way! Reminds me a bit of the VIPP Shelter house
Superb! Elegant simplicity ! Enjoy many wonderful years in your "cabin"
I can only imagine what's it's like living here. That feeling of everything being north of you, and nothing south of you. One probably cherishes the small things much much more. I live in NYC, so anything I want is at my fingertips. Not in a place like this. And I dream of having that kind of life.
Wow, absolutely gorgeous!!
What a delightful house, such fantastic perfect architecture. I have never seen such a beautiful house that blends in with nature. I'm speechless, great work 🙏 Thanks for sharing...
I'm in love with this architect designs
The videographer is amazing. The house is great too. lol.
Beeindruckend! Das wäre sogar eine Alternative zu unserem Leben auf unserem Schiff in der Bretagne.
This is a beautiful Cabin… well done 👍
Beautiful house on a gorgeous location. (BTW She seems to have a Dutch accent?)
beautifully themed and planned
This is a real life version of my fantasy
absolutely love the concrete kitchen island
Thank u for uploading new video...really looking forward always
Looks great. Would be cool to see how it remains off the grid.
Very beautiful house, very nicely done!
Beautiful place. It would amazing as a cottage. I don't think I can live there for an extended time though. I'd get too bored.
Undoubtedly a beautiful project. It does strike me that many of these projects in natural, unspoilt places still have a massive carbon footprint and little mention is made of it. At least this home is small, already a saving of precious materials and their transport, but concrete? One of the least sustainable materials around. And this is the thing, people want what they want, we all do it, style at any cost. In Australia more than most places, transforming how you think about building might make quite a difference…
This is so beautiful! It's so conscious and so close to nature and to what a human need
This channel is such perfection. What a gorgeous video
serious question! the rooms with the fold up beds so the rooms can be used for other things, how often do they get used for other things? and has it been necessary?
Can you explain how a wood clad building would be resilient in a fire? It seems it would be prime kindling for a fire.
Also, relative to the FireWise program in the US, I am not seeing defensible space around the structure. Do the local regs not require such a buffer between the structure and the trees and other fuels?
Tasmania is cool climate with high rainfall so doesn’t have the same need for restrictions and rules that apply in other parts of Australia with regard to bushfires.
@@lexandluke Or, global warming is changing everything. The Amazon rainforest has been on fire for the last few years so I wouldn’t count on a wet environment in Tasmania in the long run.
Beautiful, i would love to know how it is powered and how it approaches the use of water.
.. love it!.. can i come over and cook a meal for us two!?..
Living in Wild forest 🌳 so nice. )
wow this is stunning
gonna be fun when bandits come visits
Stunning home!
최근 본영상중에 최고네요... 저런 집짖고 싶네
i don't think there is a more talented firm/group on the planet. when i grow up. they will be designing my house.
Masterclass in filming/editing on this. Also an amazing home
Everything looks low resolution or soft focus.
This is really a local project!!!!
Wow, just wow!
beautiful
oh. This is the house I wanted.
It's so nice.
It is a concrete part of the natural surroundings. 3 Cheers.
Beautiful!
What a vibe 😍
OMG! Love it!
Absolutely love this home, wonderful video! We’ve just started a similar show in Ireland!
that light fixture is absolutely gorgeous. the way it moves and animates the shadows is memorizing! can anyone tell us who makes it?
I just love it !
Amazing spot
Thank you again
Cinematographer: "Hey God, I'm shooting footage for this cabin, I need sun, rain, some Wind, and if possible a rainbow for the ending"
God: "Say less"
Looks beautiful
I could feel the spiders through the video....welcome to Australia...
Wow this is excacly what I want
Great project
Beautiful
Very beautiful! I would like to see more details on the specs of the home, details on construction and cost of it though.
