I love that the residents of Halloween Town almost certainly have no idea wtf Jack is even talking about when he suddenly yells out the window that "This year, Christmas will be ours!" but they cheer anyway because he's Jack.

The imagery of him taking the lights from the "Christmas tree" while breaking the ornaments to put on an electric chair is such a perfect metaphor for what he is doing.
I also low how Zero tries to clear his thoughts by showing him that he is the Pumpkin King and he totally misses the hint.

This movie use to freak me out as a kid, I'm glad I got over it, because I'd say it's one of my top ten favorites. A true classic, that never should be ruined with a sequel or a remake. Movies like this just needs to be left alone,

5 years since OP commented... Well, we need a sequel, because the other Holiday Towns aren't explored. And Jack's children would make interesting complicated plots.
I can't imagine anyone voicing Jack besides Danny Elfman. Since he also composed the music you can feel he really embodies the music and the character even better because of it.
And still he sing perfectly these songs on concerts, very probably his favorite character

If you compare Jack from Tim Burton’s poem to Jack in the movie it’s clear how much of himself he added to the character. Jack was supposed to be just a “reverse Grinch”; Danny made him into a character who was driven more by boredom and intellectual curiosity. Look at how he tries to solve Christmas like a math equation and uses scientific equipment to study the artifacts. Danny Elfman wanted to be a scientist when he was a kid before he discovered he had musical talent by the way.

The moral of the song is Jack thinks christmas is just like Halloween with small changes... He doesnt understand how to create the sense of joy he experienced and believes that scaring will give the same effect if delivered in a christmas way

I think it more stems from the fact that Jack concludes, the only way to truly understand Christmas is to _try it_ for himself, and he needs to get the other monsters involved.
Jack's intention is that their Christmas be just as jolly and joyful as the original...
But the problem is, the Denizens of Halloween Town only ever know how to be scary. To be otherwise goes against their nature; they put their best and most genuine effort forward, but the end result is, they can't _not be scary._
They try to create toys; the toys come to life and attack people. They try to create hats...from old _dead things._ Instead of stockings, they stuff presents into a Live Anaconda...okay, Nature or not, that one was just _stupid._
They try to create a Christmas Wreathe, it comes to life and attacks. Their idea of a gift is a Shrunken Head - etc, etc.
And Jack is so blinded by the progress they're making, that he doesn't see the fatal flaws in the plan and where it can go wrong. In a lot of ways, it's because of the same thing; Jack is just as hardwired to be scary as all of them, so having a sort of Halloween-Edge to the Holiday, might _improve_ Christmas in a sense.
So in the end; the Denizens of Halloween are trying to replicate something that they can't _possibly_ understand. It would be like trying to employ an industrial license-plate press to make cookies. You might put in the right ingredients, but what you get is plate-shaped cookies covered in grease and oil.
It does give him new ways to scare though.

I honestly feel like I was in jacks situation I would get obsessed with Christmas as strongly and quickly as he did. I mean I'm in the spectrum and getting obsessed with things is one of the characteristics that I have personally so honestly I can really relate to Jack and his reaction to finding something so unique and different to what he's used to.

Might be my favorite song in the whole movie. The way it's framed, the way it builds you get THE EUREKA moment at the same pace he does. Not to mention, its such a perfect reprise to Jack's Lament from earlier, but in a "twisted" way that is so poetic and perfect. He's so relatable here, but also clearly obsessed and goin a little nuts. It's so good.

Probably cause throughout childhood, we’re conditioned to see Halloween related things as scary and bad so we don’t spend that much time trying to get used to it, that’s what happened with me. Luckily, my sister recommended this movie and now I have a deep love for spooky things.
I remember bringing this movie in to school to watch, and there were a couple kids that had to leave the room because they were scared. I went to Catholic school too so the teacher was super concerned for me 😅
@@emmaray6215 So I grew up in New England, and we take Spooktober pretty seriously here. I guess it’s part of our heritage; death and fear are a pretty massive part of life, and it’s probably best to get comfy with those concepts as early as possible. I loved this movie so much, three different relatives bought it for me for Xmas when I was 5. I then went on to reading Edgar Allan Poe at age 8 and Stephen King at 11, so maybe I was just a morbid kid -_-

Honestly, this might be my favorite song of the movie.
This music is not just from a kids movie, this is orchestrated beauty with passionate lyrics that have depth and meaning, that I know I'm not alone when I say the words are applicable to our everyday struggles.

Is it just me, or the slight romanticization of jacks obsession kinda attractive in a way? The way that he was animated is also nice because of how he flows through the frames in a different way than the rest of the charecters. His voice is also really nice, and the fact that he could be so distracted by a simple thing like the concept of Christmas is intriguing. Idk Jack is just a realy well made charecter

Hannah Prewitt Maybe he was an aristocrat/high class guy who died in a fiery field, hence his title and being a scarecrow until Halloween (when he dances in flames and comes out as a skeleton).
An old Irish folk tale from the mid-19th Century tells of Stingy Jack. The story says that Jack was getting chased by some villagers from whom he had stolen, when he met Satan, who claimed it was time for him to die. However, the thief stalled his death by tempting Satan with a chance to bedevil the church-going villagers chasing him. Jack told Satan to turn into a coin with which he would pay for the stolen goods (Satan could take on any shape he wanted); later, when the coin (Satan) disappeared, the Christian villagers would fight over who had stolen it. The Devil agreed to this plan. He turned himself into a silver coin and jumped into Jack's wallet, only to find himself next to a cross Jack had also picked up in the village. Jack had closed the wallet tight, and the cross stripped the Devil of his powers; and so he was trapped.
Jack lets Satan go only after he agrees to never take his soul. Many years later, the thief died, as all living things do. Of course, Jack's life had been too sinful for him to go to heaven; however, Satan had promised not to take his soul, and so he was barred from hell as well. Jack now had nowhere to go. He asked how he would see where to go, as he had no light, and Satan mockingly tossed him an ember from the flames of Hades, that would never burn out. Jack carved out one of his turnips (which were his favorite food), put the ember inside it, and began endlessly wandering the Earth for a resting place. He became known as "Jack of the Lantern", or jack-o'-lantern.

And that's how Jack ended up in Halloweentown... I think. Exhausted from endless and pointless wander, our dear thief begged for mercy and Satan gladly -enslaved him- appointed him as Pumpkin King. Jack got a place to call home (dead forest territory somewhere in-between worlds) and a job for whole eternity. Once a year Jack let ghosts, demons and monsters enter the world of livings, to remind of horrors, that awaits us in the afterlife. And he even managed to turn this event into a great holiday that glorify Satan's realm. After a while, of, course it turned out to be a punishment... (because, Jack was technically trapped in Halloweentown, like Davy Jones on "Flying Dutchman")... but hey, at least Jack escaped hell, amirite?

Jack emotionally understood what Christmas was about, but he just couldn't wrap his mind around it to explain it in terms his Halloween fellows could understand. He just did not have the words for it. Here, it reaches the point where he questions the premise. Maybe, he thinks, it's really just the ornaments and boxes and bells that's making me feel this way. And so he wound up fooling himself.
